Ken asks…
How to make myself visibile in the Internet Marketing age?
Hey I want to dive into the internet marketing field. I know about blogs and what they are? But i dont know how to write good ones to get recognized. I mean what should i start blogging about? I mean should i stick to a particular area of interest or diversify myself. And also i need some few other tips about increasing my web presence. I know you people will be answering me for the the same reason. Please guide me to some valuable resource

Jere answers:
1. Have a website, either a free blog or your own domain
2. Post at least twice a week in your blog targeted towards one business, whatever it may be. This allows your “website” to be updated regularly which is beneficial in Search Engine Optimization.
3. Most newbies tend to eagerly create a new blog and stop it after 2 months due to lack of sales. The key is consistency and laser targeted goal. Example: Promote only one affiliate product and post anything and everything around the same topic.
4. Simple ways to increase web presence would be to leave comments on other related blogs, having a social network in Facebook or post videos in YouTube which show your website address.

Your Questions About The Real Biz

Thomas asks…
How do I depreciate a business acquisition?
I purchased a business in 2006 that owns real estate. I have some good will and some equipment. Do I have to use 39 years for the building ? Does it make any difference that the building has already been in use for 10 years ?
I was thinking – if the biz purchase is 1m
150k land – no depreciation
600k is building – 39 years ?
50k is equipment – 5 years
200k is good will – 15 years ?
Can I break down the 600k and depreciate part of it faster ?
Does the fact that the owner depreciated it for 10 years already make any difference to me ?
Your help is appreciated

Jere answers:
For income tax purposes, you are required to use 39 years for the building. Age and prior depreciation makes no difference. Some of the equipment may not qualify for 5 year depreciation. You may need to use 7 years. You can take first yr Sec 179 write off on some of the equipment. You really need to see a local CPA for more advice. With a business purchase of this size, you will have other issues as well.

Linda asks…
Can you tell me what the most honest and best home-based biz?
There are so many scams, that it is hard to know in which direction to go.
I would like a way to earn money from home, but I want a fair compensation and a company of integrity.

Jere answers:
I am sure you have gotten a lot of responses, but let me share a quick story. I joined a home business in March. I thought it was a great concept and thought for sure everyone would want it, I knew they all would need it. In making my “pitch” I was missing something. I did not get the business and its real purpose. Now, I could go on and tell you we are traded on the New York Stock Exchange and that some states need a license, so we are legit, but when I heard the founder of this company talk, it made me realize, I was with a company, where the founder was actually in it to help people. All people. His story is incredible and when he spoke, it was right to me. If you do want to find a business where the founder believes in it and truly wants us to be successful and help thousands of people, I will share the information with you!

Lizzie asks…
Anybody out there know of any legit work from home opportunities?
Hi
I have been wanting to quit my crappy *** job for a long time, i have been searching for work from home business’s now for over 3 years. There seems to be so much crap out there its not funny. So i thought i would ask, if any real people out there have experienced a work from home biz op where you can make real money.
Real experiences preferable.

If you are interested to work from home with cell phones, check out;
http://work-from-home-training.blogspot.com/
Here you can get the best training course how to work from home with cell phones and make a realistic $3000 a month;

Mary asks…
Do any users know of home biz opps, that are business verified or rated with the BBB ?
Hello I’m getting a list together, trying to narrow the field down for other users. Because of all the scams on the internet.

Jere answers:
Fraid not. Ask someone in authority in real life

Your Questions About Business Online Services

Ken asks…
is Yext power listings an effective way to get your business found online?
Yext power listings has been sending me emails, it does appear accurate on where i am listed online and where i am not. it is pretty expensive though. is it effective for getting business online and is it worth the money?

Jere answers:
I haven’t heard of Yext. If you do a search for Yext reviews though it looks like this company might not be very good.
In my experience, it seems like some of the larger SEO and web design companies are in the business of selling products without caring if they actually are providing a good service.
If you are looking to get your company noticed online, I’d love to chat. Check out my website and see if you’d like to work with me. My prices are fair and I personally see to it that my clients are getting relevant traffic.

George asks…
Is there an online printing service that creates custome purchase orders?
Prior to my employment, my company had our Purchase Orders made up with our Company name and logo on it. They were perforated at the top and had a white copy along with a carbon yellow and pink copy. Is there a business online that anyone can recommend that I could get something similar made up?
Vista Prints does alot of marketing material, for the Purchase Orders I would need a company that creates material for buisness to use internaly

Jere answers:
Try something called vista print. They do a lot of custom printing and its cheap.

Robert asks…
How to set up a site/blog where others can post without them needing to sign up or log in?
We want to set up a website in memorial of someone that allows others to contribute memories and add photos without needing to sign up or log in – we expect contributors to be older generations and the less techy business involved the better (like wordpress and other blogs which get a bit tricky).
We wish to create our own site and not use a free memorial online service – unless anyone knows of a particularly good/customisable one? Many thanks.

Jere answers:
I would advice WordPress.
Watch the video’s on my site which will show you how to accomplish this.
If you have any questions let me know by the contact form and I’ll be glad to help!

Mandy asks…
How much does ut cost to get a trademark for my business and how can i do this FAST?
I have a new business online and I want to trademark my business name along with the sister Company names I have . HOW can do this cheapest way and fast? I need 3 trademarks, thanks so much!!

Jere answers:
You can have a trademark simply by using the name in business with a TM. This common law trademark affords you some protection. To register your trademark (allowing you to use the ® symbol), you have to file with the USPTO and pay $275 or $325 per class of goods/services the trademark will be used for. See the site below for more info.

Steven asks…
What do I need to do to start an online business?
I want to start an online business providing document services and printing needs to small businesses. I know who I want to host my website (Yahoo! Small Business works the best for me and is affordable) and I can make a website. What I need to know is 1) is this an area that is profitable online and 2) what are some of the first steps I should take so that I can start earning money almost immediately wothout having to spend tons of money first. Other tips are welcome!
What can I do to attract potential customers to my website while spending little money. I’m on an extremely tight budget and cannot afford much at all after all the bills are paid. While I may not be able to earn money immediately, what can I do to begin earning money as soon as practical?

Jere answers:
You seem to have thought out your online business. What strikes me though is your statement “earning almost immediately.”
Sure, you can achieve that — IF AND ONLY IF you have pre-marketed your site. It means that your target market is aware that your site will be launching so they are ready to go there and order as soon as you have launched.
One of the realities of the Web is that there is no truth to what they say “If you build it they will come.” They won’t; unless you are extremely proactive in your marketing. But to expect people flocking to your site as soon as you launch if you did no prior marketing is nothing but foolish hope. It just doesn’t happen that way. For one, it takes time for search engines to pick up your site; and it even takes a longer time for your site to be in the top 10 of your keywords.
One article that I found very useful is “7 Steps to Successful Web Site Development” http://www.powerhomebiz.com/vol142/website.htm as it takes to you all the decision steps that you need to take when starting an online business. Like any other business, startup period is full of “should I do this” or “should I do that” questions. The article is useful because it helps you think through every step of the way – from why do you want a website to who is your audience to how will you create your website to how you will market your new website.
Here are the steps you need to take when creating your online business:
STEP 1: Set Your Goals – Why do you want a web site? What is the size of the online market? What are the goals for your website?
STEP 2: Develop Your Web Site Strategy – Who is your website target audience? What typically appeals to your target audience? How are the other websites (your competition) reaching out to this target audience? How will you measure your performance?
STEP 3: Set-Up Implementation Plans – What name will you give to your site? How do you envision the design of your web site? How will you create your website? How will you create your content? How will you maintain your website?
STEP 4: Start the Ball Rolling – Do you have a logo? For e-retailers, do you have the critical components needed to run an e-commerce site? How are you going to host your site?
STEP 5: Create and Launch Your Web Site – Have you uploaded your site with your chosen web host provider? Are the scripts and application you need for your website functioning well? Have you tested your website?
STEP 6: Promote Your Web Site and Measure Its Results – Do you have a plan in place to market your website? Do you regularly review your traffic logs and web site performance tracker? How are you going to get sites to link to you? Do you know the search engine keywords that you rank well? If your site is not visible in the search engine results pages for its keywords, what strategies do you intend to do?
STEP 7: Maintain Your Website and Grow Your Web Business – Continue to find ways to grow your web business. How do you intend to continue your education on web development?
Here are some shoestring marketing ideas that can help you get the visitors you need at the least cost possible:
1. Create the best content you can with the best products you can possibly offer. Your content is your best advertisement – if visitors love your content, then they will go back and spread the word to others.
2. Make it easy for users to recommend your site. Viral marketing is very important — and easy to tap on the Web. But give your users the tools. Get a Recommend this Site script from websites such as cgiscripts.com and similar directories of scripts. Some even go as far as giving incentives to those who recommend the site to their friends. If only 10 people go to your site, but these 10 people invite 10 more – that’s additional traffic that you get for FREE!
3. Rank well in the search engines (organic search results, not the pay per click). SEs can be a big source of traffic. The key is to create the best content in your niche. If you have good content, other websites will gladly link to you and offer your site as a resource to their audience. Check the on-page factors and be sure to get linked from authority sites in your topic area.
If you are going to read only one piece on search engine optimization, I suggest you read Brett Tabke of WebmasterWorld.com’s “Successful Site in 12 Months with Google Alone: 26 steps to 15k a day.” http://www.webmasterworld.com/forum3/2010.htm
4. Send out press releases. While outfits charge as much as $650 per release, there are free press release submission places on the Web. Press releases allow you to (a) attract media attention; (b) get more back links to your website without sending each website an email request; and (c) get more visibility especially if your press release gets in Google News or Yahoo News. My website (see my profile) accepts free press release submission (no strings attached!)
5. Submit articles. Write articles and submit them to websites accepting author submissions. You get exposure for your business; establishes you as an authority in your field, and allows you to get backlinks for your website. If 50 websites publish your article and it contains a link back to your website, then you easily get 50 links from a single article. The more links you have, the greater your chances for increasing your search engine rankings.
6. Improve your conversion. Getting visitors is one thing; getting them to buy your products is a whole different story. Read the article “10 Ways to Convert Visitors to Buyers” http://www.powerhomebiz.com/072005/conversion.htm for tips on how to improve your conversion rates.

Your Questions About Internet Business Models

Sandy asks…
Explain why Internet Service Providers see technologies such as the BBC iPlayer as a threat to their existing?
Explain why Internet Service Providers see technologies such as the BBC iPlayer as a threat to their existing business model.

Jere answers:
Why would they >you still need the internet

Ruth asks…
How do the companies advertising free credit reports make money?
What is their business model? They advertise a lot on the Internet and TV, they must be profitable.

Jere answers:
Ever notice the FreeCreditReport.com commercials always end with “offer applies with enrollment in Triple Advantage” ??
Triple Advantage is a service where they charge $10/month to your credit card… And in return, you get your report from the 3 bureaus each month. I’ll go out on a limb and assume there’s some ridiculous fee for cancelling the service.
The only FREE site is AnnualCreditReport.com (or you can go to each bureau’s site individually). It’s run by one of the bureaus, and allows you to get your credit report from each of the bureaus absolutely free once per year (as mandated by the government).

Daniel asks…
What was the service that bought physical cds then rented the tracks on them over the internet?
There was a service maybe 5 years ago that had the business model of buying a bunch of cds, then renting the tracks on them so that for each renter of the cd track online, they had a physical CD in their vault. I think it failed, but I can’t remember the name of the service.

Jere answers:
I know one that is actually called music renter

Donald asks…
What changes do you want to see in the music industry?
In your opinion as a consumer/music lover/ musician/ whatever you may be, what changes do you want to see in the industry, whether simple or drastic? I’m looking at creating a new business model on an old structure that is outdated and running into problems with the internet. I want to find ways to use to internet to benefit the industry instead of trying to control the internet. But beyond that what ideas do you have that can better this industry?

Jere answers:
Big music companies could stop trying to ruin the internet and lobbing to change laws that will make a 1984 style world possible.
I wish to have them stop trying to make me believe that I am a fan of some Canadian kid with a bad haircut
They could consider maybe making music that isn’t crap.
I think the internet has done a great deal to improve the music industry giving us global access to performers but it does make us more likely to buy from Jonathon Coulton than Metalica
some things the evil RIAA has done were not bad like licencing youtube videos instead of pulling them

Lizzie asks…
How do I promote my business?
I am starting an internet modeling studio and need to find my own models. I don’t really have any start up money. What are some ways I can recruit models? Thanks.

Your Questions About Email Marketing Reviews

Sandy asks…
How does affiliate marketing work, and how do people make money from it?
Could somebody please explain how does affiliate marketing work, and how do people make money from it.
P.S: I need only answers no links to join some groups and thereby asking to pay certain amount to proceed. Thanks.

Jere answers:
There are various types of affiliate marketing “techniques” to make money, but the most common way is to join a company’s affiliate program and start getting people to go to their website through link you may have on either a basic website, blog, or social media site etc… The links that you provide for people click on to go to an affiliate company’s site tell the affiliate vendor’s what web site sent them the customer and will track how much commission the affiliate marketer will get (which usually based on sales) and will send payment to the affiliate who directed the customer to them.
Many affiliates who are profitable at this business will use their websites to harvest emails “legitimately” first. They do this by providing good content on their sites that readers are interested in. They then will ask for an email address to which they might send a free e-book, have a newsletter to subscribe too, or perhaps have a very educational video that can be watched. Many good marketers will then send good legitimate content to their potential customers that is useful to them, then “soft sell” sell them a product that will give them a commission for sending their buyer to the seller’s site.
The Super Basic Steps of Affiliate marketing in 5 steps:
1. Put up a website
2. Sign up for an affiliate program that you feel has products that you have the ability to promote well
3. Add the affiliate links that are provided from the affiliate program you signed up with to your website.
4. Continuously work to Optimize your site to be found in the major search engines and get visitors
5. Find more products and keep promoting and building your site
Affiliate marketing is a REAL business. If you take it seriously and work hard at it, I honestly feel anyone can succeed. It’s hard work, but well worth it. I heard that 99% who attempt internet business of people never make any money, and it’s mostly because they quit too soon.
There are many books you can get at local libraries that can get you educated on the subject. I recommend watching YouTube videos by lisa3876, my wife says she was the easiest for her to understand the concepts and really excited her to try and get started.
By the way, when doing your research, be warned that affiliate marketing “educational” websites are usually trying to sell you something and can be VERY persuasive. Try not to buy anything if you can help it unless you are 100% ready to proceed and the seller has a minimum of a 30 day return policy so you have ample time to really review it. I’ve spent thousands on my education to build my affiliate business and can tell you that if you work at it consistently, it can be done.
Good luck!

Nancy asks…
What jobs are there in the marketing field?
I am considering studying marketing. Which jobs are there in the field? I have no clue about anything marketing related. Also, what do I need to study in college? Do I need to go to grad school?

Jere answers:
There are so many to choose from but honestly…
Try out Internet Marketing. There are some great products out there that can help you when it comes to marketing over the internet, you can probably find a few on my review site. But please make sure to do your research before just hoping into any random Internet marketing program.
I have made a pretty decent amount of money in the internet marketing business and it’s all with hardly any effort. Of course, I do put effort towards my home-business but… I have enough free time to get out and still ride my motorcycle and spend with friends everyday.
Also to be honest… I finished high school with good grades but did not further myself by even going to college.
I really hope I helped you out and if you have any questions you can email me, my name is Jeremiah Justin Lewis and i’ve listed a link to my review website to help you out 🙂

Thomas asks…

Charles asks…
Where are some good places for an author to market their book?
As a new author, I am finding that my sales are hardly making me the breadmaker. I fault this to the lack of marketing I have undertaken, but I cannot find any good places (websites, book groups) that would be useful to submit my horror book for advertising. I’ve heard people say that there are good “free” places out there, but they’re hard to find. Anybody have any ideas?

Jere answers:
T888,
Your sales wouldn’t make you a breadmaker or breadwinner either way if you don’t have a best seller. Most authors only make about 2.50 to 4.50 per book sold. The money comes in when you have a NY Times Best Seller and a million seller. Do the math in that case.
It sounds to me like you went with a vanity publisher. (I don’t mean any offense if it’s either true or not). This is a big problem with them. I self-published my novel and it’s been on Amazon, B&N, and other websites for sale. I also did a lot of footwork and advertising in magazines and websites. It cost me over $4,000 alone just for that. But, my book also got into bookstores throughout the country.
Check with Blood Moon Rising,
http://www.bloodmoonrisingmagazine.com/
Direct your letter (in email form to) AL Vermette. Mention that an author you happen to know had a story No Laughing Matter in issue #23 and also had his novel advertised on the back page. Spook Rock.
Ask what it would cost to advertise you work. Be aware that the magazine will critique your work (review it) in other words.
I wish you a world of luck. Al will probably know who you’re talking about. Make sure your letter is nice and neat. And be sure to use Dear Mr. Not Dear Al. LOL
I wish you a world of luck in your writing.

Your Questions About Doing Business Online China

Laura asks…
Should MNC managers learn how to deal with China’s unethical practices or they try to change those practices?
It is true that China is growing exponentially, but can they keep growing that fast. As far as I know China is still a communist country and there is some risk involve in doing business with China. We know that their government is not too worry about the environment and certain practices.

Jere answers:
MNC managers need to learn how to do business successfully in China without compromising their own codes of ethical conduct and social responsibility. Yahoo was recently in the news because it controversially revealed the identity of a Chinese Yahoo user to the Chinese government, and that user was subsequently arrested and jailed for expressing views online that the government didn’t like. Yahoo’s CEO (who is of Taiwanese decent) was in the hot seat at a congressional hearing taking heat from US congressmen and the family of the jailed “dissident”. He apologized, but the guy is still in the gulag.
Google, which is supposed to “do no evil” is also struggling with the censorship issue in China. It is easy for these companies to argue that they have to “play by China’s rules” when they cooperate with the Chinese government in ways that would be completely illegal and cause a media frenzy here in the US. There are no such things, by US standards, as privacy rights and free speech in China, so internet companies are bound to struggle with these issues as they try to make money in China.
But even business and industry in the broad sense is clearly profiting from China’s lower standards, especially where the environment is concerned. Most environmentally destructive manufacturing has moved to China. Despite the howling from US politicians, nobody really wants that manufacturing to come back and poison OUR environment, and corporations wouldn’t be competitive if they had to build in the costs of environmentally-friendly manufacturing into their products.
MNC managers alone cannot change China’s “unethical practices”. There has to be a combination of factors, from governmental pressure to the work of NGOs to MNC activity, but ultimately the most important factor will be the Chinese people themselves. As their standards of living rise and their basic necessities are provided for, they will begin to demand things like a cleaner environment and better labor rights and protections. These will cause the cost of China-made goods to rise even more, and manufacturing will move to the next cheap labor, low environmental/ethical standard nation (Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, Sudan, North Korea – there are plenty of options for the future).
MNCs will hopefully be able to take their lessons learned in China with them when they make the inevitable move.

Mandy asks…
Is blog advertising an effective way to promote your company in China?
I am doing research to see different options for online marketing in China. Blog advertising was an option, but is it worth the money? How many people read ad blogs in China?

Jere answers:
It’s actually quite pointless to bother with blogs – mostly because any url with the word ‘blog’ in it is blocked by the chinese firewall.
You need to also consider how you will be selling the product and in what currency. Chinese typically do not ever use credit cards. Online purchases are done through online banking.
In terms of currency, a product offered at a price considered cheap in american dollars will likely be out of the range of most in China, who in general only make about 400-500 USD a month at a good job.
Depending on what you are selling, and the impact you want to make here, Be sure also to research the business stylings of the chinese. As a rule, the best way to get ahead is to build a better portfolio of people you know. THe chinese strive for harmony in all dealings and will prefer to do business with a person/company that brings something to the table in social relations. If your company is out to make money to benefit itself only you might have a hard time breaking into the market here, where a family owned business that knows everyone who is anyone would beat you out.
Consider starting out on www.taobao.com the chinese ebay, but be warned, you will likely need to pad your feedback for anyone to even remotely take you seriously. I’ve seen many coworkers immediately dismiss anyone without a 100% positive feedback and thousands of customers to back up the numbers.

Carol asks…
Starting a business with no debt, no assets, no money and no credit score?
I want to open a clothing store that specializes in certain sportswear but I need financing. Most likely through a small business loan since I hear it’s impossible to get a govt. grant. I’m 22 years old, I’ve never had a credit card so I suppose I don’t have a credit score. I’m not in debt or have any student loans or anything. I don’t own anything either (a place, car, jewelry, etc.). My current part-time job doesn’t pay well enough to be able to save a good amount of money.
So is it impossible for me to get a small business loan to start-up a business? I estimate that I need about 15 to 20k to cover the cost of products, supplies, payroll for me and 2 other employees, insurance/security and rent for a few months.
If not, I may have to consider making the business an online store instead of a brick-and-mortar store. But I would really prefer for it to be a brick-and-mortar store because I think my store’s specialization would be more effective than it would be online.

Jere answers:
I suggest go online first if you have no capital whatsoever. Can you imagine the headache you will have at the end of the month when the lease payment is already due and you’ve got nothing to pay? Or your employees?
Without money, start small and grow slowly
You can get a business loan only if you have collateral, assets, investment in your own business, and strong management experience in running the business. Without these, your chances of getting a loan is nil.
So with grants. Unless your business falls under the technology transfer or research types of businesses, no grants for you.

My husband and I are starting our own brick paving crew, we only have 2 employees, and I need to figure out how I will go about doing the payroll……. Can anyone suggest a program and / or system that covers these things
*Payroll processing
*Employee Tax Calculations & withioldings

Jere answers:
Yes, I would only suggest one program for it’s ease of use, and flexibility. The best overall program out there is Quickbooks.

John asks…
Canadians: Question about federal and Quebec tax return. No T4 or RL-1 due to closed-down business.?
I have a bit of a conundrum. My employer for 2009 has gone completely AWOL – i.e. they no longer exist, and their phone numbers have all been disconnected. Vanished clean. I am trying to find a way to submit my federal AND provincial (Quebec) tax returns, despite the fact that my T4 and RL-1 slips have not been – and will not be – submitted. It seems the payroll person has gone AWOL as well.
To add to this, I committed the huge blunder of getting rid of my pay stubs, which would have provided me with some crucial income tax information. The only thing I have to go on is my ROE, which only shows my gross earnings.
CRA have informed me that I can submit what little information I have, and also suggested that I could use their Online Payroll Deductions Calculator (https://apps.cra-arc.gc.ca/ebci/rhpd…o?lang=English) to estimate my income tax deductions.
Revenue Quebec, on the other hand, have completely stonewalled me, saying there is nothing they can do unless I have my RL-1 or final pay stub.
All this to say: I know I made a huge mistake by discarding my pay stubs, but is there any other solution for this mess?
Any help would be hugely appreciated. Thanks.

Jere answers:
Revenue Quebec doesn’t have an Online calculator… But they do have on that you can download… It’s called WinRAS (WINdows Retenue À la Source). Maybe they (RevQC) will accept a rough estimate in the same way with a written letter explaining the situation.

Donna asks…
I need to track my time for my own use. What timesheet program do you recommend?
I only need to track my time for own benefit, so I can look at where I spend my time, and how to better spend it. Its for my own use, not for payroll or contractors. I own a small business and I want to improve my productivity.
I prefer to use Quickbooks Pro for this since I already have that program. Can you post instructions on how to access the Timesheet option in Quickbooks Pro?
Or I’d like an online timesheet: a fast, easy timesheet website that integrates into all my other productivity tools, including gmail, highrise, and plaxo. What do you recommend? Thanks!

Jere answers:
I would create an Excel spreadsheet to use, but I would use Excel for everything if I could get away with it! 🙂

Your Questions About Direct Marketing News

Robert asks…
What are the procedures involved in share market?
What are the procedures involved in share market?
What are the basic things about share markets?
What are the day to day actions involved in share market?

Jere answers:
Well first, you’re going to need stockbroking account, either online or direct.
You have to research which stock your going to buy and you can buy books on that for example William J O’Niels books or Peter Lynch’s books. I would not jump in straight away, do your research on which shares to purchase.
Their are different markets in the stock market that contains different stocks, The New York exchange, Nasdaq, ftse etc. Nasdaq mostly consists of small to med cap companies,
After you select your stock, you purchase the quantity you want at a buy price. You go to the stockbroker at place the order and now you are the proud owner of a stock.
You can never predict exactly how the market is going to go, it can vary because of news and company reports, don’t be silly and go and predict it because you will lose money, your playing with luck. Do research on the stock you want, the market is their for you to determine is it the right time to buy the stock. At the moment in europe, the market went down because of the Greek debt crisis but yesterday it recovered and also today. Suply and demand is a key issue in the market. Its commom sense but the more buying there is, the more the market goes up.

Carol asks…
I need some marketing ideas for small business on internet, is there any way inexpensive and effective?
I want to promote my small business on FACEBOOK, anyone have any ideas or suggestions in how to promote this business, besides the news papers /magazines.

Jere answers:
“If you are going to promote your business here are some suggestion that are common and everyone using since last 4/5 decades these are :-
(1) Press Releases (2)Trade Shows (3)E-mail (4)Advertising (5)Direct Mail (6)Yellow Pages
ETC.but above of these one is most important and effective method i gonna tell you that’s “”INTERNET MARKETING THROUGH FACEBOOK”” facebook is tremendous and vast social network where million of net user give attendance every moment that is the single place where you may promote your small business on large scale you may share your product or business with hundreds of people according to your search. It need only a right decision to work..facebook require a only profile to join groups, friends, then you have to Establish a home page for your business is relatively inexpensive and can reach many people. Use newsgroups that focus on areas similar to your line of business to draw attention to the site. Always include a phone number or email address so that interested visitors can contact you. If you are a retailer, consider putting photographs of your products online, even if you’re not ready to let people to order your wares over the Internet. You may use different way to promote and market the business that’s very easy and powerful..you may hire any reliable company who works for internet marketing some time back during net surfing my eyes caught a name that magicsolv.com i read about ’em carefully everything was regarding to business promotion. In my opinion you must try out hope u will get some fruitful i hope so..best of luck.”

William asks…
Why do stock prices fluctuate after the market closes?
Once the stock market closes, some stocks continue to gain or lose, sometimes more drastically than during the trading day. Their quote shows “afterhours”. What is this? I heard analysts talking about electronic trading. What is that?

Jere answers:
In the US market hours are from 9:30 a.m. To 4:00 p.m. Eastern time. However, the electronic market which represents the aggregation of all ECNs (like ARCA, Instinet, Brut, etc) continue are generally open for trading from 8:00 a.m. Eastern time to 8:00 p.m. Eastern time. The time between 8:00 a.m. And 9:30 a.m is called “pre-market hours” and the time between 4:00 p.m. And 8:00 p.m. Is called “after-market hours”.
Because companies are releasing news almost 24 hours/day these days, their stock price reacts to these news releases whenever they become available. Also, the world does not go to sleep at 4 p.m. Eastern time and stocks in general are reacting to all kinds of news being released on a 24 hour basis.
Individuals can participate in these after-hours market activity by having their trading accounts with brokerage companies which offer their customer access to their accounts via Direct Market Access systems. These systems are considered to be electronic trading systems and can be run on your computer at home utilizing high speed internet access like DSL, Cable or fibre-optics.
If you would like to get more information on Direct Market Access systems or open an electronic trading account I would suggest you speak to the guys I use. They can be contacted at:
http://rematatrading.com/contactus.aspx
They have been very professional and helpful to me.
Good luck.

Chris asks…
what is the best marketing for tuxedo buisness in the us ?
i just added the tuxedo buisness to my retail stores and i want know how to target tuxedo customers …is it online ads or goofle search engines..local news paper..i reaaly dont know ..ant tips?!!

Jere answers:
The best way to target tuxedo customers is to target events where most tuxedos are worn. Proms and Weddings would be my primary targets.
For weddings, do in-store merchandising tradeouts with bridal dress shops (they advertise instore for you, you do the same for them). Advertise in the new bride sections of newspapers. Make sure you have a booth at wedding and bridal consumer trade shows.
For Proms, sponsor high school events. Send direct mail in neighborhoods close to your store. Also, hold a “formal” fashion show with other dress retailers targeting high school kids.
For both, send news releases to newspapers and television stations on the latest designer styles.
And yes, don’t forget the yellow pages.
Hope this helps.

Laura asks…
How is the stock market affected by currency exchange/unemployment/interest rates?
How do currency exchange rates, unemployment numbers, and interest rates affect the stock market?
It seems these are often in the news and how prices move on the anticipation of them.

Jere answers:
This is an interesting question, and I shall try and answer it in simple fashion.
In todays time and age, movements in currency exchange rates signify movement of money from one geographical location to another as far as holding that currency is concerned. As far as the stock markets are concerned, it would be the FIIs (or foreign institutional investors) who would need to buy and sell various currencies to be able to buy or sell stocks at and through the local stock exchanges. For instance, if an FII decides that it wants to take a position in the Indian Stock Market, then it would exchange its US Dollars for Indian Rupees to be able to do so; this would cause an increase of the Rupee rate and a countervailing reduction in the Dollar rate in that regard. Now, if this FII were to decide to move from India to the USA as far as its stock holding is concerned; then it would be selling the Rupee to buy the Dollar, which would have the effect of reducing the Rupee and increasing the value of the Dollar. Currency rate fluctuations may be considered by some to be a lead indicator of what the big investors may be planning to do as far as their stock market investments are concerned.
Unemployment and interest rates similarly would have a direct bearing on the performance of the stock market. If both the unemployment rate and interest rate were to be high, then it would be a bearish scenario which would be facing the stock market of the geographical location under study; and vice versa.
It may be prudent to also keep the events occuring in the commodities exchange in perspective; which may also have a similar effect on the stock market you may have under study.
Sincerely,
Akash

Your Questions About How To Do Business Online Tips

Charles asks…
I want to break into the online market, with custom made clothes..?
Is there any info about building a profitable small business online? Or tips from people who have made it. I would eventually love to create custom designed clothing for people. Any info would be great!

Jere answers:
You can set up an easy beginner store easily enough through Yahoo or eBay. The real trick to selling online is getting traffic. That is a business skill of it’s own, and one I’m learning myself. It’s all about ranking in Google search (and to a lesser extent Yahoo). Check the “Catagories” at my friend Lynn’s blog site for tons of great info on how to do this. She pushes a lot of paid products there, too (as you’d expect), but the amount of free info is amazing. You can start a web business for almost nothing if you look around.

Jenny asks…
How do you start your own website? How do you charge online?
how do ou do your business online? The website, legal, and charging the money

I’m trying to get a part time job.. i just bought my own laptop so i’m able to run a business online… anybody have any tips or know any ways to make money online?

Jere answers:
The best way to make money online without spending a penny is through get paid to programs(get paid to read email ,get paid to do surveys etc) A lot of them are scams . But in my blog I have listed the most legitimate and trusted programs . You can contact me for any other question.

Mary asks…
Where can I find tips for online marketing strategies?
Books, magazines, websites or any other source that can help me learn how to effectively market my business online.

Jere answers:
The most effective way to advertise on the Internet is to first set up a website and publish its domain name on major search directories such as Google.com, Yahoo.com [at http://www.google.com/addurl/?… And MSN.com since 85% of Internet shoppers rely on these search directories to provide them with goods and services. In a sense, these search directories are a very large Internet Yellow Pages.
Nevertheless, should your website or opening webpage fail to contain “generic” keywords, then anyone using such “generic” queries will not be able to discover your website. Your domain name [URL] of your website, in a sense, will be invisible, undiscoverable.
You may want to consider some simple algorithms which, when observed and committed in designing of a website with placement of various critical metatags that can surely achieve a high search engine presence and increase Internet traffic to your website. These metatag strategies work well with published webpages at Google and Yahoo.
Design: Should you create an extensive Flash-based website, make sure to fill-in the property entries such as the Title, Description and Keywords. Failing to do so, leaves no hard HTML or ALT resource that can be readily indexed by search robots. Also consider the Internet audience and their incoming setup. For example, if they are on analog/dialup, Flash webpages take too long to load up and therefore analog users will likely lose interest and discontinue entering the Flash site. On the other hand, anyone on hi-speed DSL lines, will welcome Flash pages which load quickly. So before designing a pure Flash websitge, ask the simple question, “Who’s my end user – is he on dialup or DSL?” And if you had to choose between these two users for maximum marketability, then select analog users since 80% of most resident users are still analog Internet subscribers and pure HTML designed webpages is best for them.
A non-Flash-based website which relies on hard text, is far easier to be indexed by search robots. Limit the use of stylized text saved as .gifs since as a graphic, they are not indexable by search robots.
Avoid use of frames since any number of search robots are unable to properly classify textual material.
Placement of Metatags:
A ranking or search order does take place with Google and Yahoo and it begins with the “Title” metag which should consist of no more than 65 characters separated by commas. The “Title” should describe in generic terms, the goods and services, followed by a location from which the resource is located, i.e., city, state. The placement of a domain name which is not generic within the “Title” is not appropriate, unless your domain name is a major recognizable brand name.
The second metatag is the “Description” which is usually 25-30 words to form a complete sentence which best describes one’s goods and services.
And the very last category – “Keywords” are also somewhat limited to 15-16 words which can be plural and compound in nature. Again, avoid multiple entries which could be mistaken as “spamdexed entries” which is defined as the loading, and submission of repetitive words into a particular metatag category. “Spamdexing” when discovered on a webpage and reported to Google’s spamreport.com can result in the elimination of your website from their search directory.
Here’s an example of a very highly-placed website on Yahoo.com: Begin with the search query “pizza downtown los angeles.” It will bring up some 1.4 million+ websites as results. Check out where “Pizza Next Door” is ranked. It’s in the Top Five! Again, Pizza Next Door’s high web presence was achieved by proper web design and placement of relevant metatags according to Yahoo’s publication guidelines.
Good luck!

Ken asks…
How to buy a domain and what are criteria that one should check?
I want to buy a domain to start my business online. I want to know what to check before buying a domain.

Jere answers:
One of the simplest ways to do this is by going to www.godaddy.com and doing a domain search.
You will be able to check as many domain names as you like. Some quick tips are that dot com’s are preferred and you should try and keep the domain as short as possible.
Once you find the domain you want you can purchase it right from GoDaddy and they host it there. This is only the first step, you still need an affiliate website to promote or one of your own for the domain you chose to point to.
There are other services out there such as hostgator as you become more advanced and find yourself buying a lot of domains.

Linda asks…
How much For this whole Package ? Graphic designers Please Help me!!!!!!!?
Hi guy im not experienced graphic designer but i do Logo designs and all, but not like this time
one of my client ask me how much for total package for following items to design
anyone tell me current market price(for following items) please………
Logo Refinement: Print Version, Online/Web Version
Stationery:Letterhead, Continuation sheet, Business Cards,DL Envelope, C4 Envelope, C5 Envelope, Fax, Memo, label, Email Signature,
Marketing:Brochure (A4 nos.4),Folder,Leaflet(2pp DL),CD Label, Powerpoint Template(Standard Size),Rate card(A5/A4)
Office:Invoice,LPO,Quote
Media Kit:Folder/Brochure/with CD and rate card

Jere answers:
That “package” is called a “Corporate Identity.”
Depending on the company, this work can cost from tens of thousands of dollars to hundreds of thousands.
I don’t know you. I don’t know your work or experience and I certainly don’t know the client.
I wouldn’t start the work for less than ten grand, but this price level may not be appropriate for you or your client. For example, if you have never done a “package” of this extent before and if you client is just some local small business trying to get started. But if this is some huge multinational corporate giant and you have the experience and chops (skills), even if you have never done a complet corporate identity before, they should expect to pay a LOT more. (general rule of thumb: The greater your impact your work has, the more people it is intended to reach, the higher the cost should be to do the work)
Figure out what your “hourly rate” is worth. Then, for this project, estimate how long it will take to do the work. Then DOUBLE it. It ALWAYS takes longer than you think it will. Trust me. The bigger the project, the more that can go wrong. Figure that, even if you only have to DO the logo one time, (in a vector graphic so it can be scaled up or down to any size) you STILL have to place it in the layouts for EACH of those documents and applications. It takes TIME to properly layout a business card. It takes time to place a logo and address and typeset an envelope, letterhead and all those other pieces of paper. It takes TIME to convert the logo and sig to a web version. It takes TIME to layout a brochure an burn a master CD.
And, with all this going on, the client is going to want approval steps, make changes and you’ll have a certain amount of rework to do, based on his changes and to fix some of your own mistakes.
Especially in freelance graphic design, time really DOES equal money. Give yourself a generous time estimate and then, like I said, double it. THAT is how much you quote your client and how you structure your contract. (you BETTER get this down in writing, along with a firm deadline and payment structure, over yours and the client’s signature) That way, if the client makes any MAJOR changes, you renegotiate the contract. (wouldn’t you HATE to be 90% done and then the clients wants to change the logo?)
Most of my contracts are written as an hourly rate with my time estimate. Since I double my estimated time, I almost ALWAYS come in on time and under budget. That way, I often give the client the pleasant surprise of an invoice much lower than the price he expected and I still get paid for every hour I work. Everybody’s happy.

Your Questions About Business Online Games

Sandra asks…
What steps should I take to starting an Online Business selling Computer Gaming Hardware?
Hi, I’m 18 and I REALLY want to own my own online business selling Gaming Hardware. I’m just confused about how I actually would go about making a profit. Please some list some 1 2 3 steps for me!
Thank you A LOT!

Jere answers:
Presumably you’d need a lot of money to get it started, as most computer hardware items are really expensive. Then, you’d need to find a way to get discounted prices or something to make money on sales (marking up item prices won’t let you succeed). That, or you can try selling pre-assembled machines at a slight markup, say 20% over the cost of the individual items. Try doing some research, check Google, AMD, nVidia, Intel, etc. Hopefully you can find some better information than this out there. Also, try posting this in a business-related section. Good luck!

Richard asks…

Your Questions About Doing Business Online Taxes

James asks…
How do I go around applying for taxes when I create my small online business?
I’m sure I definitely have to and I don’t want to get in trouble with the law. How do I go around doing this? Thank you.

Jere answers:
The IRS and your state websites are good places. You can also try your local SBDC (Small Business Development Council) website. They will hook you up with a councilor that can help you with details specific to your locality.

Sharon asks…
Which taxes do i apply to my online business?
I have an online business, I live in Georgia. And the guy that designed it tells me that I can’t apply taxes to purchases made by customers outside of Georgia. I don’t think it’s true, it doesn’t make any sense to me. I want have GA taxes applied to all purchases. Am i wrong?
my business doesn’t have an actual location! most of my customers are out of GA.

Jere answers:
All the previous answers are correct. However, here is a move now going through the Federal government to allow each state to collect sales taxes on internet purchases. Right now, you only charge sales tax to residents who live in a state where you have a physical business presence.
If the law goes through, that will change. Most likely, you’ll be paying each state sales tax in relation to the residence of the customer. Customer lives in PA, you’ll have to pay PA sales tax for that customer’s purchase. Customer lives in CA, you’ll have to pay CA for that customer’s purchase.
Creates a real nightmare for online businesses which is why a lot of small business organizations are fighting against it.
Tony

Betty asks…
I want to start a show business online in California do I need a business license or do I need to pay taxes? ?
How can I get one b4 I invest on the shoes?

Jere answers:
What kind of show? For most businesses you do need a license. Check out The Small business administration and ask questions there. I work with a company from home and we do not need a license and that is because we are independent contractors WITH THE COMPANY. We work for ourself, but we do not need a license. So, because you are starting your own business outside of a company I would think so.

David asks…
Taxes or Registration of Online Business in PA?
I live in Pennsylvania and want to start a business online I have already sold on eBay and other sites that are like it but now I wanted to open my own site and sell through it. What I will be selling is Party Packs like everything you need for a party in a box. I will be buying some things wholesale and other things I will be making.
My questions are if I need to charge tax and if so how to go about doing that? Do I need some kind of Business licensee? I tried looking this stuff up but I go so many different answers like that you don’t need to do anything unless you make over $10,000 a year or that you don’t need to pay sales tax at all since the business is completely online. So now I am so confused on what I am suppose to do.
This will be just a small business that I will do on the side and sell to people in the USA and Canada.
If someone could please give me some answers a to my question it would be great.

Jere answers:
1. You must charge PA sales tax to residents of Pennsylvania and anyone who purchases (picks up) goods you sell inside the boundaries of the state.
If you are mailing goods to an address outside of the state you do not have to charge PA sales tax. (In theory the recipient of the goods is supposed to pay a use tax to the state they live in — but that is not your concern.)
You must contact the office of the secretary of state in Harrisburg and obtain a license which will entitle you to collect sales tax on behalf of the state and to conduct a business in the state.
Depending on the laws in the township you will be doing business in you may be required to obtain some kind of license. (Just ask at the township building.)
You do not have to pay sales tax on purchases YOU make in Pennsylvania providing that the goods being purchases are either being used as component parts of what you sell or are being resold by you. (You may be required to show or send in a copy of your license to prove you are legitimate.)
You do not have to pay sales tax on goods you purchase out of state and have shipped or mailed to you in Pennsylvania.
If you personally pick up goods in another state you probably will have to pay their local sales tax.

Mark asks…
What happens if i dont charge taxes on my online-home business?
… i live in California.
i’m only sixteen, but my mom helps me run the business.
we sell handcrafted jewelry, skirts, and totebags that we handcraft at home.
do i legally have to charge taxes?
what happens if i dont?
im planning to take orders through paypal
thanks.

Jere answers:
Yes you’re legally required to get a sales tax license from CA, collect the tax and remit it to CA.
If you don’t, when you get caught, you’ll have to pay the sales tax out of your own pocket that you should have collected, plus interest and penalties. Don’t go there.

Your Questions About The Real Biz

Laura asks…
for a registered office and registered agent can be a house?
I am starting a business and am not planning on setting up a real office. To start a business in the state of Michigan you need to put down a registered office address and a registered agent. can that just be my house address and myself since i wont have an actual office? (I’m planning on incorporating as domestic profit

Jere answers:
Proprietorships do not need agents, only corporations do.
What biz do you wish to start? IT “Might” be better to skip the municipal paperwork
for now, and just “open shop” and sell your services……….and when you are
pocketing $2k a mo, then get your license and tell them that you are opening that day.
Can advise further

Susan asks…
Do you have to have a legal issue to change your name or can someone do so if they just want to?
If I felt in danger but not entirely sure how to explain why or the reason seemed ridiculous to others, would I be able to request a name change? Can people do this without a REAL legal issue? I’d like to be able to hide from a previous boyfriend/spouse who was extremely abusive. Would I be able to change my first and last names, even my middle name? How would one go about doing this and how much would it cost?

Jere answers:
There are many reasons why people change their names, including your reason. The Social Security Administration can also provide you with a new ss number if you provide them with evidence showing that you are being harassed or abused or your life is in danger.
The court costs vary from state to state. You can change your entire name or just part of it. You can find the forms for name changes at http://www.legalformsbank.biz/namechange.asp .

Mary asks…

Sandy asks…
Are there really any jobs (and I mean legal ones!) that you can do from home and using the computer?
Jobs that don’t require you to buy something from another company. Jobs that may require you to interview with a company first, but no scams, real honest pay for using your computer from home?

Jere answers:
Job-search-tips.awardspace.biz – I used this site. You can compare such online job offers here.

Robert asks…
How do I get links to my website?
I have a homebase biz which is a one stop shop. How do I get links to my website. www.5linx.net/christian so that people can take advantage of what I have to offer by starting their own one stop shop or shopping at the website.

Jere answers:
To advertise your site you could get Yahoo ads, Google ads or dannysdirect.co.uk. They cost 10p(20c) per click apart from Danny’s Direct which costs $125 per quarter this targets UK buyers. To have a entire page on dannysdirect.co.uk it will cost $1000 per quarter but you’ll get 1000s of visitors maybe more as they advertise.
Google and Yahoo are the giants in this but they charge more $0.20 per click can easily turn into a few hundred dollars real fast as there are millions of users!
By the way on your homepage you spelt global wrong ‘Welcome to Christian’s Gobal Enterprise’

Your Questions About Direct Marketing Companies

William asks…
What does a financial services marketing company actually do?
What does a financial services marketing company actually do?
If you worked for one, like sales or operations, what would the work entail? Anybody know?

Jere answers:
A financial services marketing company seeks out prospects for financial services. That could be done through direct mail, researching public records and telephone solicitations. They then sell the “leads” that are developed to providers (sellers) of financial services.

Michael asks…
Starting a new division what should payouts be?
I have been asked to start a new divinsion of an online direct marketing company. Although this is a high profile positions the base salary is way under what someone would normaly get at an exisitng company. Essentialy building the database up and re-marketing this data. I have been offered 10 percent net revenue of this division, but I have to cover all costs with this 10 percent. .
If this division does 5 million in revenue, the division gets $500K to cover Salaries/Commissions, Technology, Misc.
I feel this is not a great deal? Am I wrong here?

Jere answers:
You are not wrong.

Linda asks…
I need a marketing company to provide me with mailing lists – any recommendations?
I want to use a marketing company to provide mailing lists of a people who be interested in a product / service i have created. Can anybody recommend any marketing companies – i want to do my marketing by post.
Thanks in advance for all your help 🙂

Jere answers:
If you’re in the UK, check out the Direct Marketing Association and use a company that’s registered with them. They also have an annual show usually in Earls Court or Olympia, which is worth going to for shopping around and meeting some of the companies that provide lists.

Sandy asks…
Has Anyone Heard Of The Efusjon Energy Club?
I have a friend trying to get me to join this club. He makes it seem like the best thing since sliced bread. Is it a traditional direct marketing company or how is it different?

Jere answers:
Hey True,
I’ve been researching this company for a few weeks now and all I can come up with is good stuff. It’s a relatively new product with new flavors still coming out. It’s an all natural energy drink. What sets this company apart from any other energy drink company out there is their marketing. They have an unusual comp plan than will make it easier for more people to make money and they are going to be teaming up with Facebook. So, as far as I can tell: good product, good comp plan, excellent endorsement by Facebook. Sounds like a winner to me. It will be key to get on a winning team though. For more info:

Ruth asks…
Who has experience with network marketing and taxes?
I received a 1099 from my network marketing company for commissions and overrides. I also received a statement from them called Taxable Income REcap that shows how much I spent on Purchasing Products. You buy products at wholesale and sell them at retail. The difference is your income or “right now” money. This money is not easily tracked because they can’t tell how much you sold at full cost, how much you sold at discounts and how much you kept for personal use or as gifts to further your business. Do I need to somehow claim this on my taxes as income or should I just claim what was noted on my 1099? There is also a box on my 1099-MISC form that is checked that says “Payer made direct sales of $5000 or more of consumer products to a buyer (recipient) for resale.” Does this relate to me or is this the company just saying that I bought more than $5000 worth of stuff to sell as I see fit? Anyone have any experience with this on their federal taxes?

Jere answers:
You will need to fill out a schedule c. That is where you report the cost of goods sold, the income you made and how much product you have left. I would claim the income on my 1099 and anymore that you might have from this business. All a 1099 is what they(the co.) has pd you. They do not know what you spent or made elsewhere. You can look up instructions for a schedule c on IRS.gov. Type schedule c in the key words box.

Your Questions About How To Do Business Cards Online

Helen asks…
Where is a good place to get business cards made?
I know there are plenty of places to get business cards made online and many for really affordable prices — but I wanted to see what you all recommended and why. Thanks!

Jere answers:
I use Vista Print for all of my business needs. They always offer free products, you just pay for shipping. I have always had a great experience with the company. Check them out
http://www.vistaprint.com/frf?frf=117047566194

Sandra asks…
Where to order business name cards of my own?
I’d like to make business name cards. I find lots of websites where I can design my business cards online and order. Has anybody tried ordering business card online? Are they trustworthy?
Yeah I already went to ask at Kinko’s but the procedure seemed kinda complicated like they have too many kinds of designs, colors and papers to choose from. Designing and ordering online seems much easier.

Jere answers:
Yes, there are sites that will do that, but if the cost is significantly less than a local print shop, chances are there will be advertising on the back of the card. Check it out carefully … Nothing says “cheap” more than passing out a card that has advertising for someone else on it.

David asks…
Where is a good place to get plain, classy business cards online or in person?
Everywhere I look online, it’s all about full color or two color business cards. I don’t want anything gaudy or flashy like that. I want a classy business card, on heavy, off-white paper, with raised lettering. Something like the boys over at Pierce & Pierce (American Psycho reference) would be drooling over. Where can I go to get something like that?

Jere answers:
You may want to look into an online company called Nebs. They do raised print business cards. Or, you may have to try a local print shop.

Sharon asks…
Will defalting on a business credit card effect your persoanal credit rating?
You do have to give your personal SS# as well as a Federal ID # when you sign up for certain business credit cards online. Does the credit rating effect your personal credit rating or the business credit rating or both?

Jere answers:
It depends on whether the card is completely tied to the business. Most business credit card contracts have some small print where the owner of the company signs personal resposibility if the card is defaulted on. The payments themselves are not reflected on your personal credit rating however if you default it could hit your personal rating. Check your original contract to see if they had a personal clause.

Lizzie asks…
Where can I buy a small quantity of business cards online?
I am looking to have high-quality business cards made up (e.g. embossed), but only want a small quantity (max 50-100), as I may have to have them changed soon. Where can I order these online?

Jere answers:
Vista print has the best
I bought 1000 for under 50 dollars.

Your Questions About Internet Marketing Forum

William asks…
How to identify a problem to create a product on the internet?
Ive been threading forums to identify various problems for internet marketing opportunity.Anyways of speeding up the process instead of wandering for hours in search of a viable problem that I can provide a solution to?

Jere answers:
It is a very important question: The Market Research.
Most people start a product before knowing their targeted market problems.
I’ll be looking for questions, problems, wants, needs and topics that
show a lot of activity.
To find people’s problems, here are the main resources you should use:
– Search Engines
– Forums
– Newsgroups
Identify the problems that people have in your niche, then create a product.
You must search for questions like:
* How do I ____
* Where can I ____
* Why the heck cant I ____?
Once you find an answer, you can start brainstorming a product creation idea.
I would suggest you to create an info product (Audi, video or Ebook).

Ken asks…
How to get more member for my new forum?
I have started a new forum at http://www.ALEZAC.com
This forum is a Marketplace for:
Buying
Selling
Trading
Exchange
Auction
Freebies
for Internet Marketing Products.
Now, a small problem, how to get the words out to get more people to register!

Jere answers:
Well posting this question my attract people haha. I would say word to mouth is the best thing though. If someone joins and likes it, they will tell people they know.

Sandra asks…
Promoting a Business Opp – Internet Marketing?
I have a business opportunity that I need to promote and get people to join. Where would you and how would you suggest I promote this particular thing?
Its not an MLM, its no cost, etc…but its best to be 18+ so its hard to post on forums without getting a kid to message me.
Any suggestions…or if there are any gurus out there, any systems you use?

Jere answers:
Make a list of sites that attract would-be entrepreneurs and those looking to make money from home. Search for keywords such as “home business” or “business opportunities” or “business ideas” — then make a list of those sites. My site for example attracts a lot of bizopp advertisers because my site attracts the type of customers they want
Then check with Adwords and other pay per click marketing. Be careful though as it can get expensive.
Check print publications such as Entrepreneur Magazine, as they always have bizopp ads because they reach the type of customers you want.

Donna asks…
What are some good websites or softwares that would help with internet marketing?
I’m getting my feet wet in internet marketing and there’s so much information that I’m feeling overwhelmed! Which sites or software do you use to help you? Are there any advice you can give me?

Jere answers:
There’s an excellent marketing forum called the Warrior Forum (warriorforum.com). It’s free and it’s a gold mine of information and helpful people.

Susan asks…
Where can i find internet marketing affiliates?
Im going to be releasing an internet marketing product that teaches real estate investing.
Im trying to find more affiliates, and websites for joint ventures.
Anyone know a good place to find these?
thanks!

Your Questions About Business Online Services Group

George asks…
What is the best way of finding new prospects for a software company selling service management software?
I am selling service management software to office equipment dealers and it is much easier when they phone in and ask for it. We have a good website and plenty of existing customers. When I cold call companies they either say they have installed something recently, or it is not the right timing for them to look. Any advise?

Jere answers:
It’s always easier to sell to a pre-warmed customer, that is, someone who’s ready to buy. Prospecting is much harder. However, there are one or two things that can make it easier.
Referrals from existing customers are good. Ask who they know who’d also benefit from what you provide. One of the best times to ask is when they’ve just taken delivery of their software. Always ask for 3 referrals. That way you should get at least one.
Go to business networking events and build relationships with your fellow networkers. Tell them about the sort of companies you’d like to be put in touch with and ask who they have in their network that fulfils those criteria. You can also join online networking groups like Linked In and Ecademy.
When you’re cold calling and they say that it’s not the right timing, ask when they’re likely to be thinking about doing something about it. Make a note to call them back and make sure you follow up. Even when people say they’re going to buy something in the next 6 months, they often haven’t done anything within a year. By being in regular contact, your company will be the one that they think of when they’re ready.
Does your website capture people’s names and e-mail? Offer them a free report in exchange for their details. That way you build a database of potential customers. You can send them further e-mails and follow those up with telephone calls. Your free report should be something that gives them useful information. Avoid making it a plug for what you do.
Good luck!

Sandra asks…
How does self-employed tax work when you have multiple income sources?
For example, would one mentally segregate their different “incomes” in to different groups, or as far as taxes go all income is reported as one source?
Say I make money from six different means, such as, for example:
1.Taking online surveys.
2.Selling scrap metals.
3.Selling EBook online.
4.Offering babysitting services, pet sitting, etc.
5.Selling items on Ebay, Amazon, Craigslist, etc.
6.Entering competitions, or possibly doing temp/on-call jobs, etc.
If I had those theoretical income sources listed prior, and made above the minimum required taxable income I should report it the same all together, or would the process differ?
Thanks.

Jere answers:
Some should be a separate schedule C such as peform sitting services OK.
Online sales surveys etc.should be another schedule C.
Scrap metal sales might need to be a separate schedule C depending on how big of business operation it would be OK.
Or just choose to combine them all on one schedule C and call it what ever you would choose to at that time in your life OK.
Miscellaneous income from all sources of income from my daily written receipt book and all of my 1099s combimed and added together for this tax year OK.
That should take care of all of them RIGHT.
Only one schedule SE would be required to report the NET PROFIT from all of the different types of your buisness operations and determine the total amount on your self employment taxes social security taxes for the tax year during the tax filing season for that pupose and time in your life.
Hope that you find the above enclosed information useful. 05/04/2013

William asks…
What is needed to use multilevel as a sales tool?
At my company we have several products as well as services that would fit perfectly with the multilevel networking sales processes.
1.- How much should we give to every person for every product that he/she sells?
2.- What are the advantages/disadvantages with this kind of process?
3.- For every product sold, every person within the networking how much money or percentage of the fee shall receive?
I have plenty of questions and so little space to write them on, i’m very interested in putting this into my company, I’m not looking to acquire products from an existent networking company.
Thanks,

Jere answers:
How effective this will be depends a great deal on the nature of the product or service. I’ve been in several “plans” and my dad was in Amway, always having meetings. I’ve still got a firm belief that there are GREAT benefits to this type of structure and that it is not necessarily a “scheme”. For example, isn’t it better to reward distributors instead of giving millions of dollars to advertising companies? I’d rather see the “underdog” rewarded for loyalty to a brand or product, than billions going to the next thing about to interrupt my favorite TV program.
The key, and the greatest potential flaw, is that the distributors/affiliates have proper training, especially in what sales techniques to avoid. For example, a potential downfall to an online business would be your website becoming a well-known source of SPAM as money-hungry affiates start promoting the product in all the most inappropriate, off-topic places.
This is true in the real world too. How many people have gone to Amway or Tupperware parties just to support their friend, and then avoid future contact because you know it will end in some sort of sales pitch? Word of mouth is great, but not if it turns distributors into some sort of social paria. I’ve actually seen Amway leaders telling new distributors that if their friend isn’t interested in a better life through their business opportunity, then they shouldn’t waste time with that friend anymore. Sounds more like a cult than a business to me.
So on to some actual TIPS…
Make sure that, after all the commissions and multi-level rewards, you still have a product that, at the stated retail price, is something viable that a consumer would buy even if they were not interested in “joining the business”. Because this is one area where many MLM plans have a bad reputation.
Then there’s the promise of income. People join because they see this neat structure where they tell 5 friends and THEY tell five friends and they tell THEIR five friends, then wow! That’s 5 x 5 x 5 or 125 customers already! When THEY tell 5 friends that makes 625. Pretty soon if you go down deep enough in the structure you’re getting commissions on millions of sales.
There is only one problem with that economic model… Pretty soon you will run out of people, because (thankfully) we don’t breed that fast.
One solution to this, which I plan on implementing in an affiliate system (I’m a web programmer) is a way to turn the structure on it’s head. Have release dates for new products, and when a new product comes out, the LAST people to join are given the FIRST opportunity to sign on to the new product. In effect, each product has it’s own unique MLM plan attached. I’m not sure how workable this will be, but the complexity should not be too much to handle when the whole thing is computer-automated.
So to sum up (for now), it seems that the ideal product for this would be one that had an extremely low production and distribution cost (downloadable online software or web access for example), something that could generate REPEAT as opposed to ONE-TIME sales, and that could still be sold at a competitive, even bargain, price, such that closing a sale would be almost a no-brainer.
I’d love to expand on this already somewhat-lengthy answer with anyone who has an interest. See my Yahoo Group, MLM Strategies…

Jenny asks…

What are the some of the best innovation companies and/or consulting groups?
Ideo is probably the most famous innovation company – it helps client organizations develop innovative new product ideas. Fahrenheit 212 is a consulting group that analyzed trends and market opportunities, and develops new products. Ideas to Go is a firm that holds brainstorming sessions to identity innovative new business ideas. What are some other famous, successful, popular, or interesting firms the help companies develop innovative ideas, products, or processes?

Jere answers:
The consulting companies noted in other responder answers aren’t necessarily innovative, but they do help companies market and strategize products and service offerings. In terms of “revolutionizing” an industry or how a product is brought to market, the following entities come to mind:
Applied Minds (Glendale, CA)
A think tank and innovention company, noted for their speech scrambler product (Babble), an online search and collaborative system (Metaweb), and other innovations.

Your Questions About Internet Business Phone Service

Daniel asks…
How can I add my phone number to the phone book?
I have a business phone and fax number registered in the Seattle area. It is not registered as an unlisted number. But every time a phone book comes out, my number(s) never show up. Is there a way to have Dex or Yellow Book add my number? I don’t want in advertisement or anything. Just a listing like everyone else. I feel that I am losing customers this way.

Jere answers:
It might have to with who you use for phone service. I suggest you get a small ad in the yellow pages. You design it once and can renew forever. Plus people will be able to find you on the Internet yellowpages aswell.

Mark asks…
How should I get 1800# which works in overseas? is it possible to get 1800# on any mobile phone?
I’m in export / import business having office overseas. Most of the time I want to receive direct calls from my customers to whom I can give immediate response as such Is there anyway I can get 1800# USA phone # whose ring directly goes to other overseas country? Like most of Indian Call Centre at Banglor India are using this facility? I want to get an economical 1800 # land line or mobile # so that anytime my customers / client may keep in direct touch with me for some significant issues.
Which mobil / land line phone service provider gives the most economical rates for international calls to INDIA, BANGLADEH, PAKISTAN, does anyone has some info about a New York based company called 9278 communication apparently i’ve heard they’re good in providing international calling cards / international calling plans. Anyway thanks for your search? Also can any one help me about ROUTING, OR VOIP (internet based interational calling plans i.e. NET2PHONE? how this plann work? sound & quality wise

Jere answers:
At&t has a 800 number plan. I have heard it works for overseas customers too. But you could check it out at www.at&tplans.com

Donna asks…
Why are contract commitments so common in the cell phone industry?
The major wireless providers have always been really attached to requiring contracts for non-prepaid services. This is in contract to other telecommunications industries such as landline phone service, internet, and television services where strict contract requirements are not nearly as prevalent. Why is this?

Jere answers:
So they can ensure a customer for the time agreed to, and they create consequences for stopping the contract. Even homeowners/property managers will do that with leases. It’s for business security I suppose. Like, If AT&T had a bunch of towers in a certain area down, month to month individuals would be more likely to bail and find a carrier that has better service, that contracted customers, who will likely wait the problem out.

Maria asks…
What is the best phone service option for a small business?
We are a small business at this present time, but will expand. We want to have call forwarding, music on hold, and just basically be able to not miss a call even if two lines are being used.

Jere answers:
Currently, the best way to do that is to use a VoIP phone service like packet8 or Phonepower. But, you need a decent internet connection for that, and you need to make sure you hook the phones into the router ahead of the computers, so that they get access to the bandwidth they need first.
If you don’t have access to high speed internet service, then you are going to want to buy into a service like eVoice, that lets you manage your office through virtual numbers. They are currently offering a free 6 month trial.
I currently run my office with multiple MagicJack accounts that have tollf ree numbers ringing to them. It’s dirt cheap, and the service is great.

John asks…
How do I connect my cigular internet to my notebook?
I have cingual phone service and I’d like to connect the internet service to my note book , I know that there is a connection card a GT max but it won’t fit into my labtop. Is there another card. or can I conect with a wifi or a bluetooth device.

Jere answers:
Cingular has at least 3 different types of cellular modem cards:
http://business.cingular.com/businesscenter/solutions/wireless-laptop/modem-cards.jsp
I think two of them are regular PCMCIA cards (for somewhat older laptops) and the last is the new PCI-Express type. (I think it’s called an ExpressCard.)

Your Questions About Internet Marketing Company

Donald asks…
Best Company To Outsource Internet Marketing & SEO In Brisbane?
I am looking to outsource all of the Internet Marketing and SEO for my small business in Brisbane. I want to employee a company that is results driven but doesn’t over charge. I would also like a company that has proven results. I want to rank well in all the search engines and have my customers find me with ease.
Thanks!

Jere answers:
Every site owner wants SEO, and it’s a pretty complex topic that site owners don’t understand, so I think a lot of SEO specialists overcharge (because they can get away with it). Check out MadBeeTech SEO at http://seo.madbeetech.com/. They’ve got some of the lowest priced packages that I’ve seen. Check out their home page for a good explanation of SEO in general.

Charles asks…
I have an interview tomorrow at a Real estate internet marketing company, Z57, what should i expect?
What kind of questions would they ask?
Any great ideas..

Jere answers:
Expect that you will be asked questions about real estate and be sure to read news and articles about the trends in the market as well.

Joseph asks…
I am looking to buy an internet marketing company?

Jere answers:
Good for u

Sandy asks…
Why you need a webhosting company with Internet Marketing expertise?
This is not for an SEO article. I am expecting an apt answer plus the marketing techniques the webhosters need to have. Thanks very much.
I think that’s it. The best marketing a webhosting service could give webmasters is the best services you listed. I suppose we should look at it that way, as best marketing becomes redundant if the server is down. Thanks for the answer.

Jere answers:
Why you need a webhosting company with Internet Marketing expertise
You don’t! You need a webhosting company that is legit, not offshore, fast speed, reliable service, limited downage, 24/7 support. These are requirements, asking a webhost about Internet Marketing is like going to the dentist to have your blood taken….If you could elaborate a bit more on this vauge question, I would be happy to tell you more.

Chris asks…
Where do I find reliable Internet marketing people in Kolkata?
I have a small business and a website now i want to market it through Internet. I have read little about SEO and PPC. I spoke to a few companies but they are charging beyond my capacity. Also i am not sure of their service. Can anyone suggest some good SEO consultant or affordable internet marketing company in India ( preferaly kolkata) ?

Jere answers:
It is always difficult to find SEO for really small businesses because good SEO companies are very costly – the SEO consultants are no lesser. You can definitely find a lot of people claiming themselves as “SEO Experts” and would probably be ready to work for peanuts but in most cases these people would do more harm to your site than any good.
I worked with a guy in Kolkata who taught me some good SEO stuff, you can try contacting him. He is a professional SEO consultant and works for various big companies but do provide some free tips if you would request. Also his blog is well rated among SEO consultants in India and has good stuff that might be helpful. Check his blog http://seo-kolkata.blogspot.com and request for some tips or you can try to hire him ( not sure of affordability though) that might be of help.

Your Questions About How To Do Business Online In India

George asks…
what are the legal formalities required to start an online business?
i wanted to start online business in india that is selling pearl and gold ornaments. plzzzz can anyone help me with legal requirements to start a business

Jere answers:
I think the best thing to do is to consult a lawyer dealing in cyber business. To my knowledge there is no legal formalities to be done just to get started. I say this because when you start selling something on the net you will have to get a platform for yourself, i.e. Either through a blog or through some auction sites like ebay. So you will be registering your information about yourself there. However it would always be good to register a firm / company to protect yourself from unnecessary hassles later on.

Sandy asks…
What kinds of online business are available in India?
I live in India & i want to know what possible kinds of online business‘s are available in India?

Jere answers:
Online business is tough all over the world..
Best to study your own country and market and see what people could do online ..

Please tell me if i would require any legal permit or government license to start my online clothes business in Chandigarh, India?

Hi
Yes, you need a license.
Why, cause when you ship the product to the customer you will have to mention the name. You can’t always send with a personal name. You have to have a business name, to have a business name you need to register.
You can start with a proprietor registration.

Please give me tips all kinds of activity requred to increase trafic to my website. Cost free marketing tips will be more resonable for me.

Jere answers:
Cost free are always the best….
Here’s a few ideas:
1)Write articles and submit them to article directories
2)Learn SEO (online and offline)
3)Exchange links with other people in your same niche
4)Start building a list and email them regularly
5)Write a free report and make it rebrandable
6)Create a myspace profile and join as many groups as possible and start adding friends then you can post bulletins, and make comments on high profile myspace sites (actors, bands, etc)….
7)Pick one of these and do it until you see results or you’ll see minimul results all the way around
8)Use PLR articles in your niche, or other niches and inadverently [sic] add your links within either articles or blog posts (make it make sense)
That should keep you busy and I should charge you for all that actually……
Enjoy!

Michael asks…
How does the golden triangle/divine ratio work in terms of web design?
i’m reading about email marketing and how the email should have good web design principles and include the most important information in the “golden triangle” which is supposedly the upper left triangle area. I’m trying to find an example but all i find are the golden triangle rules for photography (is it the same thing?) and of course the golden ratio in terms of website design.

Jere answers:
Who is your web audience?
Before you create a single web site design THINK about your audience. Who will come to this site? Once there, what do you want them to achieve. Why will their life be better because they found your great web site? There are some important general truths any web designer must recognize such as:
No one has any time any more.
Simple is better than complex.
Everything you do influences your visitors (EVERYTHING).
Occam’s Razor can’t be used too much (when in doubt cut again).
You have seconds to capture attention possibly for a lifetime or five seconds.
Prework is important. Think about beautiful things you like and who will be visiting your site.

Your Questions About The Real Biz

Mandy asks…
Is it worth it to spend extra money and buy the Epiphone Les Paul Plus Top or just the plain top?
Should i spend almost 100 dollars extra and buy the Epiphone Les Paul Standard Plus Top or should i just get the Epiphone Les Paul Standard Plain top. As far as i know they are both same sound quality but the plus top looks a bit nicer. Please dont say neither or say get a gibson because i dont have enough money. I want real answers please.

Jere answers:
I really like the flame top. That’s just my personal preference. Some of the cheaper Epi Les Pauls don’t have an arched top. Also the cheaper models have low end pickups. I’d probably spend the extra money because it sounds like that’s what you want.
Here’s a site that has a bunch of Les Pauls new and used: http://www.meanstreak.biz

Joseph asks…
What’s best way to raise money to start a small Wrestling business?IDEAS?
I want to start my own real small wrestling business.this is nothing that i am trying to get
rich doing . it’s just something that i love to do.I work a job at a fast food place.
there noway i could get the money i need form working my job dose anyone have any Ideas
of anyway i might may be able to raise some money?

Jere answers:
A; there is no such thing as a wresting biz; I think you mean wresting school And there are
2 types of wresting [from an old expert of the Greek type], GREEK and TV –which
have nothing to do with each other.
B; if you wish to just have people wrestle in a building, you have to figure out if you can
draw –ticket paying viewers. IF you can afford to pay rent or buy a building and
you have no desire to earn any profit, no problem. BUT few people try to open a TV type
wresting school cause it is both fake and fixed. It is pure entertainment…….and not
every wrestler makes it beyond 1 or 2 matches……..
I can guide you but i need more data

Helen asks…
How can I make money without a real job?

What are some real life problems involving radians?
It’s an assignment for school. We need to come up with real life applications/problems involving radians. My teacher said that there are tons of examples but I can’t find any. Thanks for your help.

Jere answers:
The radian is the standard unit of angular measure, used in many areas of mathematics. An angle’s measurement in radians is numerically equal to the length of a corresponding arc of a unit circle. The unit was formerly an SI supplementary unit, but this category was abolished in 1995 and the radian is now considered an SI derived unit. The SI unit of solid angle measurement is the steradian. Where can I find a hibachi grill?

We’re from jersey. I’m originally from Philly and I know plenty of places around that area, but I don’t want to waste our time driving all the way there. Are they any places around Atlantic City that are like this? My idea of REAL hibachi?
Please and Thank You.

Your Questions About Direct Marketing Strategies

Robert asks…
Can you Pleeease critique my Cover Letter?.. Please…I need a job?
I am in search of a career in Public Relations or Client Service and maintenace…. Is this cover letter going to get me that job…. also if anyone live in the NYC or North Jersey area and can assist with getting me a job… Wow… I would greatly appreciate… here it is
I’m writing to express interest and apply for the XXXXXX position. After reviewing the requirements and qualifications, I’m confident that I can exceed company expectations as an employee.
My previous coursework at Fairleigh Dickinson University and vast experience in the retail industry has given me a tremendous foundation for the marketing and client relations fields. Through signage/marketing campaigns, market research, and client and employee resolution I have found reacting to client needs and wants appropriately is key when successfully executed. I’m also familiar with fulfilling sales goals and target objectives through my retail management and telephone marketing experience. Direct interaction with consumers and clients has equipped me to quickly and effectively resolve client issues and complaints. In addition, I’ve been fortunate to have had the experience of representing several of some of the most successful companies by means of field promotional marketing. These new innovative marketing strategies put me in direct contact with clients in order to promote new products and services as well as inform and sell potential clients. These crucial areas are where I have attained much knowledge in consumer/client habits as well as employer expectations. My quick and creative thinking, critical decision making and multi-tasking capabilities are just a few skills that clients and employers alike have come to appreciate. I’m a firm believer in accountability, strong work ethics, and client satisfaction.

Thank you for your time and consideration.
Derick Robinson

Jere answers:
It is professional and covers most things. It is a bit “formal”. Like you used a Resume Service to guide you.
If this doesn’t work, try a more personal cover letter that sounds just like a real letter that you would write to a friend … To remind them of your qualifications if they were opening a business..

Maria asks…
B2B Marketing Project – I really don’t know where to start?
I am in a general marketing class and I have to do a B2B Marketing Project. Here is what the professor gave us:
The Task
An international power transformer manufacturing company is interested in entering the American market. The company is conducting a preliminary market survey for Power Distribution Transformers in the U.S. market. As a marketing manager, you have been given the responsibility to conduct the study using secondary sources. Based on your analysis the company will decide its next strategy. The company expects you to provide the following information. You must provide enough information in each section so that company can formulate its strategy. Each section must be reported separately. This is a typical B2B marketing project.
1.Demand and Market: Estimate the demand for power distribution transformers in the U.S. A starting point of this analysis could be to determine the NAICS product or industry category code (is NAICS 33531 too broad?) and then search for information on the web and other sources. Describe target market for power distribution transformers and estimate its size (number and money value) and growth. It is possible that you may be able to get a directory/list of the buying companies with addresses and contact information. If you get such information provide it in the Appendix.
2.Market Segmentation: The study may call for a segmentation of the market. Describe how you would segment the market. Define the characteristics of each segment. Possible bases for segmentation may be as follows: type of institution (e.g., residential, retail or industrial market), voltage, value, price, type of transformers (e.g., dry vs. liquid/oil), and usage. Explain how segmentation may help your company in strategy formulation. Be as specific as possible. Your segmentation may call for a possible positioning strategy for different types of transformers. If applicable suggest a positioning strategy.
3.Competition: The industry requires high level of investment because of the value and the size of the product. Competition may be oligopolistic in nature, i.e., only a few companies dominate the market. With globalization, it is changing and the industry is becoming perfectly competitive. Be as detailed as possible in explaining competition.
4.Marketing Mix: Determine the marketing mix for the company. Explain each of the four Ps. Discuss product design and attribute, pricing, promotion and distribution. If needed, suggest separate marketing mix for each segment identified. Your positioning strategy may require separate marketing mix for each segment. Since this is a B2B project the characteristics and the delivery of the mix could be different from the consumer market.
5.Marketing Environment: Explain how the environment affects the marketing of the product. Specifically, identify those forces and factors that may directly affect the demand or the marketing of the product. Consider economic, demographic, technological, legal/political and social/cultural factors affecting the industry. Discuss how each of them affects the market.
I have NO idea where to start, what to do, anything. PLEASE, if someone could help direct me in the right direction I would be grateful.

Jere answers:
Seems pretty straightforward…I recommend googling each segment and learning what they mean..then just provide examples…its seems like they want you to create a focus test group..possibly surveys etc..but you must segment them..into pricing…or type..and then ofcourse demographic…email me if you need more help.

Charles asks…
i need a tagline for my event&wedding business?

Mark asks…
How effective is the “Green” marketing strategy?
I am thinking about opening up a “Green” laundromat and am wondering how effective this will be as marketing strategy. I would use energy saving machines and possibly some kind of water recycling system. Do you think people would be interested?

Jere answers:
I would say that’s a great idea – especiallly if you’re in a college town – where lots of laundry customers will be college-aged kids (who are also the demo who’d be drawn to “green” thing)
I would make sure your marketing directly hits to that demo – and don’t fall into the trap many other companies do with their advertising: trying to hit on lots of topics (ex: low price, good location, great service, etc).
Keep your marketing focused on your “green” aspect – and find creative ways of doing it. Plus, direct your marketing to places your demo audience will see it – student newspapers, flyers on campus, etc.

Sandy asks…
What is the difference between Marketing strategy and Promotional Strategy?
I get confused with Marketing and Promotional Strategies, are they the same? or different?

Jere answers:
Hi there,
When planning your Marketing strategy you have to decide on a combination of strategies considering Product, Price, Place, Promotion and direct marketing issues.
When planning your Promotional Strategy you concentrate only in promotional issues i.e. How to introduce and position your product in the minds of your potential customers via Advertising, Sales Promotions, Personal Selling and by creating Publicity.

Ruth asks…
Is it a good idea of doing a business online like on ebay and amazon?
hey, I am thinking of buying a stock of shirts or different sizes and shirts from some cheap country and then import it to USA and then sell it on ebay or amazon. How good is this idea? and do you think that I can do a good business online?
Thanks.

Jere answers:
I think that would probably be called wholesaling and a lot of people already do that. You would have to do a lot to get people to know more about your business and sell it at an affordable price for the mass consumers. You should probably get others to help out with your business too. Make sure your merchandise is good quality and not cheap and defective, otherwise that will only hurt you.

At the risk of sounding flippant, it sounds like you have an internet business IDEA, not a PLAN. If you had a business plan, it would include the actions steps to implement your idea. If you look in my answer Source, you will see the program I used to get a complete A-Z internet marketing education and start one of my online businesses in just one month while working in my spare time.
Good luck!

Sharon asks…
How do you write a business plan for a startup?
I wrote a business plan but I’m somewhat unsure whether it confirms to the accepted standards to go in front of a VC or a SBA-approved bank. Could you please show me how to write a business plan through a website, or give me some pointers from personal experience? Thank you in advance.

Jere answers:
According to the book “The ABC’s of Writing Winning Business Plans: How to Prepare a Business Plan That Others Will Want to Read — and Invest In” http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0446694150/powerhomebizguid by Garrett Sutton, below are some tips to make a winning business plan that can get funding:
– Money follows management. Investors look first at the people involved in the company. If you are just starting out and don’t have relevant experience, investors expect to see that you have an experienced team of advisors and employees helping you in the business.
– Make sure you “sell” the one reason your business will become profitable.
– State clearly the strategies you will employ to get the word out about your business. Your business plan must show how you will leverage the Internet, public relations, viral marketing, and other strategies to attract customers.
– Present realistic estimates of the time, energy and costs of building a successful business. Do not underestimate or overestimate revenues. While investors know your numbers are simply guesses, they want to see that your numbers are within the “range of reality.” Be careful of your financial statements: this is one area where you can easily lose credibility if presented poorly.
– Benchmark similar companies to show that you’ve done your homework and researched the market.
– Your Executive Summary is your calling card. If it is not a winner, investors may not even read your entire plan. Emphasize your own as well as your team’s track record in the Executive Summary.
– Before sending your business plan to lenders and investors, send it out first to a few in order to get feedback. You’d want to correct your plan if someone tells you that you’re way off mark, rather than have a potential investor tell it to you and lose the chance to get the funding you need.

Charles asks…
How to write an effective business plan. How to perform market research on local marinas?
I am writing a business plan to open a new marina. I have been to S.C.O.R.E. and I am having a difficult time with market research and what the expectations of a business plan really are.

Jere answers:
As a computer business consultant, I have had the privilege of helping quite a few online companies go through the business plan phase of start up. I recommend this software package from Palo Alto as it does a great job for a do it yourself-er. It has 500 templates to choose from.
They even have state and county wide market research on marinas in your area. Http://www.paloalto.com/market_research/?affiliate=sequimpc
I am making the assumption that if you are going to put out the money to open a marina, $300 is within your budget.
TOP TEN DO’S
1. Prepare a complete business plan for any business you are considering.
2. Use the business plan templates furnished in each session.
3. Complete sections of your business plan as you proceed through the course.
4. Research (use search engines) to find business plans that are available on the Internet.
5. Package your business plan in an attractive kit as a selling tool.
6. Submit your business plan to experts in your intended business for their advice.
7. Spell out your strategies on how you intend to handle adversities.
8. Spell out the strengths and weaknesses of your management team.
9. Include a monthly one-year cash flow projection.
10. Freely and frequently modify your business plans to account for changing conditions.
TOP TEN DON’TS
1. Be optimistic (on the high side) in estimating future sales.
2. Be optimistic (on the low side) in estimating future costs.
3. Disregard or discount weaknesses in your plan. Spell them out.
4. Stress long-term projections. Better to focus on projections for your first year.
5. Depend entirely on the uniqueness of your business or the success of an invention.
6. Project yourself as someone you’re not. Be brutally realistic.
7. Be everything to everybody. Highly focused specialists usually do best.
8. Proceed without adequate financial and accounting know-how.
9. Base your business plan on a wonderful concept. Test it first.
10. Skip the step of preparing a business plan before starting.

Linda asks…
Do you know where I can find a sample ambulance company business plan?
The reason I’m asking is because I’ve been looking for one and haven’t found one yet. If I make an ambulance company business plan, do you think it will sell over the internet or on ebay at only $50 as an example to help other paramedics or emt’s thinking about opening one?

Jere answers:
It’s easy. Ffind a bunch of trial lawers that can drive fast. Tell them they get 10 bucks for every person they pick up and drive to the hospital. Watch the money roll in!
Seriously, here is a site that has free business plans you can look at to get an idea.

Your Questions About Business Online Services Group

Maria asks…
What is the best way to build a professional website?
I am useless at that stuff but can’t afford to pay someone to do it for me. What would make it easier for me to do? It is for my business so would need to be a 10-page website and look professional.

Jere answers:
——————————————————————————–
Unfortunately the first stap of overthinking your website is often missed. A domain-name is very important but if you want a good service you first need to know what technical demands you’ve got. And to know your technical demands, you have to consider your site thoroughly.
A site idea is how you want your site to be. Consider the groups you target (make a short demographic description including computer skills) for each group. Ask yourself what they want from your site. Next ask yourself what you want from your site: entertain, get them to go to a shop and buy your book or even have an online bookshop. This is very important for how your site is going to be, so take enough time to consider all this.
Once you know how you want your site to be, you start thinking about content. Shortly write the main pages down in keywords: home, about us, downloads etc.
Having an insight in your content it’s time to make up your navigation. Always think of how navigation would be the most logical to you. Ask some friends to check it. They can tell you what is unclear and could be better.
So, you’ve got your idea and content based on your goals and target groups. Here comes te designing process. No need to call a designer yet, just go to globally designing it yourself: how would you like to be your site, from a graphical view. Should the site be a graveyard with the gravestones as navigation or do you prefer a very mysterious site. It depends on your product and information. Check some sites of other companies to get an idea and discuss your own idea’s again with friends (preferebly those who share your interest) as a focus-group. A creative site stays in the mind, so be creative without losing your goals.
Afer you’ve done all this, it is time to find a designer. You’ve prepared yourself, so you can tell him what you want. Ask him/her for an opinion of your thoughts. Maybe your designer comes up with some points you didn’t think about. On base of what you want you designer can tell you what technical demands there are for your site. Most designers can also tell you where you should register or offer hosting themselves.
It’s time for the designer to design and for you to write the actual texts (or if you’re very lucky that’s up to a copywriter). Biggest hint here: people read poorly on the internet. Write down what you want to tell and make a summarized text out of this. No complicated grammar constructions; try to keep the number of words down to 7 per sentence and use as less sentences as possible (be reasonable here though). Note that this is a general pointer. An article from a magazine is something very different ofcourse.
Some other general pointers:
* Don’t go online to hasty. If you do, you’ll encounter big problems or your site needs rebuilds every 2 months.
* Nothing as irritating as an ‘under construction’ message.
* Look into the future: how do you expect your site to grow.
* Forbid your designer to use flash. It’s fancy, but not everyone has got it. Only use it if it’s /really/ needed for your site.
* Make sure your site is readable to everyone.
* Don’t forget to tell search engines where to find you
* Update your site on a regular base and make sure never to have got really outdated information on your site.
Luckily my answer to your second question is shorter: there’s no need to get your designer to update your site, you can do this yourself if you learn some basic html-codes. I would suggest you ask your designer to make a combination mysql/php-site for you, which is easy maintainable. For big changes on your site a designer is needed though.

Mandy asks…
Are Government grants available for disabled person to start a taxi service?
I live in a small town that doesn’t have a taxi service. I would like to start one. I receive SSDI benefits for a disability. Are there government grants available, and where should I start looking? I would rather not pay for such information through the many services Google provides.

Jere answers:
The Government has created a portal to help individuals who need benefits because of life events. Visit http://www.govbenefits.gov
Use the drop down button
DO YOU NEED BENEFITS BECAUSE OF A LIFE EVENT?
Choose the life situation best applicable to you and then see if you qualify for the available government assistance.
It is hard to find grants to start a business. Unlike the myths that some perpetuate, federal government and even private foundations hardly give grant money for a for-profit business. And yes, grants mean PAPERWORK – lots and lots of it, that is why a cottage industry of grant writers was born.
Nonetheless, you can go to the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) http://www.cfda.gov and Grants.gov http://www.grants.gov – these are two sites created by the federal government to provide transparency and information on grants. Browse through the listings and see if you can find any grant that would support a for-profit venture.
Even if you buy books on “how to get grants” or list that supposedly has information on grants — all of them are mere rehash of what CFDA has, albeit packaged differently. But still the info is the same – hardly any grants for starting a for profit business.
Even SBA does NOT give out grants. From the SBA website http://www.sba.gov/expanding/grants.html…
“The U.S. Small Business Administration does not offer grants to start or expand small businesses, although it does offer a wide variety of loan programs. (See http://www.sba.gov/financing for more information) While SBA does offer some grant programs, these are generally designed to expand and enhance organizations that provide small business management, technical, or financial assistance. These grants generally support non-profit organizations, intermediary lending institutions, and state and local governments.”
Most of the federal grants are given to specific target groups with specific requirements (e.g. Minority business owners involved in transportation related contracts emanating from DOT – Grant#20.905 Disadvantaged Business Enterprises Short Term Lending Program
Grants are also often given to non profit groups or organizations involved in training or other similar activities (grant 59.043 Women’s Business Ownership Assistance that are given to those who will create women’s business center that will train women entrepreneurs
For private grants, you may want to check the Foundation Center’s Foundation Grants for Individuals Online. It’s a subscription based website ($9.95 per month) but their opening blurb only says that the database is ideal for “students, artists, academic researchers, libraries and financial aid offices.” Entrepreneurs are apparently not one of them, so I take it they also don’t have listings of private foundations who give grants to would-be entrepreneurs.

Where can I buy merchandise for a small business?
I would like to open up a small clothing store in the Chicago area and need to know where I can merchandise for my business? Where can I get started?

Jere answers:
Check out
http://www.digital-women.com
Rebecca’s site is chock full of information – including an amazing resource book filled with wholesaling resources – where you can find just about everything under the sun to buy at wholesale and then sell retail.
Also, don’t forget to check with your local business licensing department, to find out if there is a special license or other regulations you’ll need to follow – and they can give you solid advice about how to get started.
Check out your local Chamber of Commerce – not only can they be a great asset for getting started and getting the word out, but they can probably point you in the right direction of other sources.
If you have more questions, the SBA is a great resource – and you can even get answers to your questions from the website, find samples of business plans and much, much more. ( http://www.sba.gov )
Need the advice of an experienced clothing store exec? Check out SCORE – you can find an expert who was in your line of work, and they’ll answer your questions and help you for free. ( http://www.score.org )
MicroMentor is another great resource that offers free mentors to small business people. ( http://www.micromentor.com )
Check out the resources available at your local library – especially in the reference section. You’ll find trade and special industry magazines, catalogs and much, much more.
Your local Small Business Development Center, Women’s Small Business Development Center or local Economic Development Office can offer advice, information, resources, training and much more.
The U.S. Goverment Federal Trade Commission does much more than protect consumers from fraud. Check out their Website.
Join online and offline industry or networking groups in your field. They can provide valuable advice, information and share insider’s tips for your success – plus it helps not to feel like you’re alone!
Your local Job Service or Workforce Development office can provide information about demographics, plus answer all your questions about hiring employees, taxes and insurance you’ll have to pay.
Talk to an insurance agent who specializes in your type of business. They are often “in the know” and can be a fountain of great information.
Good luck!

Charles asks…
How to send emails to many people at once?
Hello,
I have a business and want to send emails to my clients. It would be over 1000 emails per day.
Can it be done using Yahoo Mail?
If not, I need to know any software or online service which will allow me to do so. Also, I would prefer a free service but if there isn’t any, a paid one but a cheap one would work.
Thank you.

Jere answers:
You can only send to a maximum of 100 addresses at a time and no more than 50 to the same domain IE: @yahoo.com…. This is to prevent SPAMMERS from overdoing it… This includes any CATEGORY you formulate to make it easier sending to multiple addresses. If more than one CATEGORY the total of BOTH cannot exceed the restrictions.
If you want to hide all addresses from one another put 100 in the BCC line and put NOTHING in the TO line … Recipients will see UNDISCLOSED RECIPIENT in the TO line which does not effect anything…
You will know when you have reached your limit when you receive notification from Yahoo advising you have reached your limit…When this happens you may have to wait a half hour or so before you can continue sending messages with many email addresses…Normally, after receiving this notification you can still send emails with messages containing only a few email addresses..
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
I obtained this comment from the internet. You can obtain many suggestions by entering HOW TO SEND EMAILS TO MANY PEOPLE in your web browser.
Without knowing more about your specific situation, my general recommendation would be to get your 1,200 people to join a Yahoo group. They have to join, but once they’re on, then a) you won’t be accused of spamming, and b) you’ll know that they actually want to get whatever it is you’re sending.
If you absolutely cannot ask them to take action to “sign up” for your email, then you should check with your ISP for mailing solutions, or look for mailing list providers that don’t require double opt in. You do run the risk of being labeled a spammer, though, if you go this route.
Or, of course, you could send a lot of individual emails, by hand.
Though you’ll still run the risk of being called a spammer.

How can I get a free grant to start a business or buy a house?

Your Questions About Doing Business Online China

George asks…
Business UK! Selling products online…?
I want to start up a business that imports products from china and sells them online. I have already found a supplier and I am going to sell around 6 items on the site (max of 10). Instead of having a lot of products im decided to stick to a small amount of affordable everyday items to be sold to a mass market. I will have an online shop and open an ebay shop too.
Could I do this business as a sole trader?
What laws effect this business?
Are there any laws or anything i should know about from importing goods from china to sell?

Jere answers:
Hello Cliff
You can run your business as a sole trader, which makes you personally liable for everything that happens in your company. It may be worth thinking about setting up a limited company. It doesn’t cost a lot – under £100 – and gives you more protection.
As Grandad Jim says, you need to notify HMRC within 3 months of setting up.
Think carefully about the terms and conditions of your supplier in China. What’s the minimum quantity they supply – usually it’s a container load? How and when do you have to pay them – this affects your cashflow? What happens if there’s any faulty merchandise? What’s the order lead time? If you’re running low on stocks, how quickly can you restock?
Business Link is definitely worth talking to. They have a lot of free information on imports and exports and usually have an advisor who specialises in it. The UK Trade and Investment people are helpful, too.
Good luck!
Rosemary

Betty asks…
Greeting Cards from China?
I am buying a range of handmade cards and greeting cards from UK and USA companies. I am thinking of buying also from China using alibaba.com What do you think the unit prices from China for handmade cards will be and do you think I can make a successful business online in the industry?

Jere answers:
It can be ranged from US$0.5 – $0.50 dending to the quality and quanity. Wholesale bulk are much cheaper. Do some research first by checking out some companies locally or from China. Ebay or Amazon are good places for research as well.
Hope this helps.

John asks…
In a home business what (licenses) do I need to receive products from a china prtnr. ship them from my home?
I am starting a doll selling business that will be handled online. I have my first round of product ready to be shipped to me from my Chinese and Korean partners but I need a tax ID and some other things. What do I need and how do I go about this?
THANK YOU!

Jere answers:
You also need import/export licence ,marketing licence and foreign beneficiary application form.
Your national Internal Affairs or Consumer Advice Office should be able to help.
Try also www.customerled.com

Mary asks…
Do you know any country that doesn’t charge importation taxes?
I want to open a warehouse for an online business and import products from China, but the importation taxes in my country are too expensive.
Any idea where can I set up a new branch?

Jere answers:
Any goods that remain in your country will be subject to any duties and taxes. Goods that are just transshipped should not be dutiable IF you have a bonded Customs warehouse. Check with your Customs office to see how to set that up. That would generally be cheaper than setting one up in a different country.

Mandy asks…
What To Sell Online and School?
i need money. im 16 years old and i need lots of cash. i already applied for a couple of places that accept people under 16. the one that i have the most hope for is best buy but i dont think that anyone is going to call me.
so i need to find another way
i got to start my own small business online and maybe at school
what can i sell on ebay or craigslist (preferably ebay) that i can sell in large quantities and make money on it. how would i get this product??
i was thinking maybe import some crap from china and sell it on ebay along with the millions of people that do that already. IDK any ideas on what to sell? also could i sell this at school??
please dont say homemade bracelets or sell gum at school. i need a real business, import, export, profit = LARGE AMOUNT OF CASH
something that can make me like $100 a week which is what a weekend job at best buy would do for me

Jere answers:
The easiest way to do this is to simply buy and sell goods that people are selling on ebay, kijiji, craigslist, etc and try to sell them yourself. You just need to do some research and become good at valuing items, so you know when you’ve found a bargain. You can even specialise in a particular type of product – especially products where you already have a hobby or interest.
The other thing you can do is buy whole lots of goods at local (in-real-life) Surplus Auctions – a lot of companies and most municipal governments sell off whole batches of things; e.g. 10 LCD Monitors. You then sell them off individually at a profit.
Good luck

Your Questions About Email Marketing Software

Paul asks…
email marketing software?
I need an email marketing software package that will do its thing i.e. set up a list of emails and what emails to send but actually send them through through outlook 07
i need it sent through outlook becase i have an access database set up that imports replies from the emails sent through out look directly in to the database
this access database is then uploaded to an sql database
so i need what i said above or a email marketing program than can export all replies to an excel sheet or something that i can then upload to sql
helpp

Jere answers:
Actually, you can import or export Excel spreadsheets with most of the major autoresponder companies such as Aweber, Get Response of Email Aces. One problem though is that with Aweber or Get Response you cannot start sending mail to these people unless they re-optin and accept receiving mail from you once again. So if you are a marketer it can be somewhat of a hindrance after already building a list of subscribers else where. But the good news is that Email Aces allows you to import without those repercussions.
You might also check out a company called GoldMail. I’m sure you would find it in a search. It’s a very professional business Email service that could help set you apart from most other companies. Hope that helps.

Carol asks…
Are there any free email marketing software websites?

Jere answers:
I’m not exactly sure what you are looking for.
A web-based system that I use is called Vertical Response. It’s not free, but it is very affordable. Vertical Response is a very robust program that allows you to create, distribute, and track the response rates of e-mail campaigns.
Another nice thing about the program, is that it allows you to maintain the look and feel of your current advertising and/or company brand image rather easily.
Vertical Response charges a modest amount per month, plus a set amount for each 100 (I believe) e-mail messages you distribute.
If you are serious about adopting a reliable, robust, easy-to-use program for e-mail marketing, Vertical Response has my highest endorsement.
And, no, I do not work for the company.

John asks…
What is the easiest software for e-mail marketing?
Hi can anybody help me what is the easiest email marketing software to use has anybody got any idea,

Jere answers:
Campaign Monitor is great – easy to use, great analytics and you only pay when you send e-mail out ($5 + $0.01c per e-mail).

Steven asks…
Where do I register my mail id to start e-mail marketing worldwide?
I’d like to start email marketing for my software product. I want to do it legal and hence I want to register my mail ID with the regulatory authority so that I wont be levied any penalty in future. Kindly help me….

Jere answers:
There is no e-mail registry that makes spamming (or marketing) legal.

Chris asks…
What kind of design software should I get for work?
I need something to help me design professional & creative looking emails for our Email Marketing. Along with postcards, flyer’s, posters I might need to design for work.

Jere answers:
The same stuff everyone else uses for that type of stuff.
Office Suite (OpenOffice or MS Office) – Emails

Your Questions About Direct Marketing News

Jenny asks…
Seeking All Disgruntled Altig International / A.I.L. Employees?
A reporter named Kathy Tomlinson, with CTV National News, is looking for information from any Canadians who have experience with the above multi-level marketing (MLM) company. She is looking for people with direct experience working for this company, who are willing to be interviewed on camera about their experience.
I’ve agreed to speak with Kathy regarding my experience as a Hiring Manager with this MLM company. It would also help her story to hear the agent’s perspective. If your personal experience resembles the experiences posted on the threads “American Income Life Is A Scam” and “American Income Life is a Fraud” on www.scam.com, or the reports on www.ripoffreport.com, then don’t be afraid to come forward. You aren’t doing anything wrong. In fact, you’ll be helping a lot of people by making the public aware of this company’s MLM tactics.
Kathy is nearing her deadline, so please respond to her as soon as possible. She can be reached at 416-313-2486 or at whistleblower@ctv.ca

Jere answers:
No responses here.
Either people are really scared of this firm.
Or, they are so ashamed of their mistake, that they don’t want to have anything to do with this company.
Or, they are not a bogus firm after all.

William asks…
Help with Financial Calculation?
Hi,
I am in need of a “calculator” or set of calculator that helps me make a decision on my personal situation. Here is brief:
I am planning to refinance my house. Trying to decide 15 year mortgage vs 30 years. I have already completed about 4 years of mortgage.
Now here is dilemma:
If I do it for 15 years I save about 160K in additional interest payment. So that is a good news. However, it sets me up with 800$ per month extra in payment. Now, IF I go for 30 years ( which frees up 800$s ) — and if I consistently invest in stock/funds etc and assuming ( 6% on average return, 8% is too aggressive!! , OR I want to see various returns % ) and at the same time I save in taxes for additional 15 years. Which is better 160K I saved OR 30 year option.
Also, consider that after 15 years I would have freed up the whole mortgage payment so I could very well invest those money for additional 15 years. But then tax benefit for last 15 year would go away. Also, I might need to factor in inflation as well.
Any calculators on the market OR any direct help from the community would help me determine this ? I am just trying to do various What-IF scenarios to make up a decision.
Thanks
— Jignesh.

Jere answers:

“Calif. Slams PacifiCare for alleged claims violations
Posted On: Jan. 29, 2008
By Gloria Gonzalez
SACRAMENTO, Calif.—California regulators have assessed a record $3.5 million fine and are seeking up to $1.3 billion in penalties against a UnitedHealth Group Inc. Unit for allegedly violating state regulations governing claims payments.
California Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner has launched an enforcement action against UnitedHealth’s PacifiCare unit in response to market conduct examinations that identified 130,000 alleged violations in the company’s handling of claims and provider data.
Each violation has a statutory penalty up to $5,000 for a nonwillful violation and up to $10,000 for a willful violation—meaning that if all the violations are shown to be willful, the penalty could be as high as $1.3 billion.
The California Department of Managed Health Care assessed a $3.5 million fine, which it said is a state record, and outlined steps PacifiCare must take to correct the claims payment problems, including an independent monitor to oversee changes and additional staff.

PacifiCare is accused of numerous violations, including: wrongful denial of covered claims, incorrect payment of claims, lost documents including certificates of creditable coverage and medical records, failure to timely acknowledge receipt of claims, multiple requests for documentation that was previously provided, failure to address all issues and respond timely to member appeals and provider disputes, and failure to manage provider network contracts and resolve provider disputes.
The two regulatory organizations launched a joint investigation last year after receiving hundreds of consumer and provider complaints about claims payment problems by PacifiCare, particularly after its December 2005 acquisition by Minnetonka, Minn.-based UnitedHealth.
In a statement, UnitedHealthcare said the issues were largely administrative- and provider-related and that most have no direct effect on PacifiCare members. The company also attributed some of the issues to a provider network transition that had to be completed six months earlier than anticipated due to the acquisition.
In addition, the company said it has largely resolved processing errors involving point-of-service claims, which were the primary focus on the DMHC examination, and is making good progress on ensuring the timely and accurate resolution of provider disputes.
The company also said it has resolved the majority of the claims payment issues identified by the California Department of Insurance and made systemic changes to help avoid them in the future. It also said it has hired additional staff, including a newly appointed vp of transactions oversight, to oversee its performance.
Meanwhile, the CDI is considering similar broad reviews of other health insurers, although a spokesman declined to identify any insurers. ”

Maria asks…
What are some marketing methods for promoting my nonfiction book?
My book is nonfiction and is probably considered a “how to” book. I need to come up with promotion and marketing ideas…things I’ll do to get the book “out there” when it is published. I have come up with a few obvious ones: facebook, myspace, twitter, personal e-mails, word-of-mouth, and some local appearances. What else is there that is relatively inexpensive? Any suggestions are welcome. Thank you!

Jere answers:
You sound self funded so this will be kind of hard for you.
First you need to analyze your demographic. I don’t know what your book is other than it’s non-fiction and maybe a DIY so it’s hard to help you figure out who to try to sell it to. From there it is easier to figure out your outlets. Lets just say your book is about how to be a better runner. You would probably want to search free demographics online, there are some mediocre sites but you will get a general idea of where to target locally for advertising.
Facebook has a very dynamic advertising system but like all online advertising it is pay by click which can get costly.
Locally, I would recommend placing an ad in you news paper, possibly direct mail (more people read them than you think), and maybe a radio ad since those are relatively cheap and 2 of the 3 deal with print which is obviously a trait of your target market.
I would then suggest trying to get someone (i.e. Newspaper columnist) to review you book and write about it.
Also, you can talk to you local book store owners about advertising, selling through them, and maybe having a book reading or some kind of promotion in the store.
Good Luck!

What are some ways to market / gain new customers in steam cleaning?
I will be starting a steam cleaning business. The business will be a “green” business. I am interested on ideas that others will have to market the idea of steam cleaning. I will be targeting businesses, offices, restaurants etc. I will also be doing graffiti removal and gum removal. Any ideas on how to market/ advertise would be much appreciated! As well as ideas on how to push my company into the doors of a business that already has a cleaning company.

Join professional trade organizations, chambers of commerce, BBB, etc.
Build a website and update it frequently.
Market your services online with pay-per-click campaigns.
Use social media, facebook, twitter, etc.
Create a referral program and let your previous/existing customers sell your services and send you leads.
Direct mail still works, buy a targeted list of potential customers and send out a postcard mailer.
Cold call.
Go door to door handing out fliers and business cards.
Use news releases.
Provide free demonstrations.
Use before/after photos of your work in your advertising.
