Hi. I had the same decision to make when I was starting my online business so I know what problems you are facing.

At first I used paypal, but then my sales were increasing very quickly and I knew I needed to switch to a merchant account/payment gateway setup to handle the larger volume.

I came across this website, http://www.electronictransferservice.com and they really helped me learn a lot. There’s plenty of information on their pages and I discovered so much about how all this works with processing credit cards. Their FAQ section is definitely worth a look.

I’m not recommending you sign up with them in anyway, but I did contact them and was able to get all my questions about merchant credit card processing answered from a real live person. That was pretty cool.

I eventually went with a different company, but at least I was armed with much more knowledge than when I first started.

I’m thankful to say that my business and sales have been doing well and making the switch was, to me, a good choice. You’ll have to determine for yourself if and when you will make the switch.

One thing though, if your volume of sales is not enough to cover the costs of processing fees, then I would go with paypal and just wait till it does.

Here are your steps:

Firstly, know what you are. If you do all of the things you mentioned above, then you are an IT Consultancy, and those are the services you provide. Your company description is IT Consultancy; your job description is IT Consultant, and your business cards should say the same. If you start reading off a list of services, then people will just switch off. Let people ask if you can solve a particular problem, don’t just read the list (because by the sound of things, you are willing to solve any IT problem).

Secondly, get a website. You’re in IT, so if you don’t have a website you will not be credible (and you will not be found). Use wordpress and find a clean, professional template to use. WordPress is faster than coding your own, a better use of your time, and it will look better (you are an IT consultant, not a designer).

Thirdly, create landing pages. These are pages that people go to whenever they arrive from an advert. You will want one for every single service that you say you provide. Landing pages should include prices, a description of that particular service, a testimonial, and the call to action. Your call to action needs to be: “Click Here For a Quote”. This will open a page that enables the person to input their contact details so you can call back.

Fourthly, use google adwords. Search for a free coupon (you should be able to get £30 free). Create adverts for every one of the services that you say you provide, and send those to their landing page (unless you want to waste all your money, do not send those to the homepage). All your marketing budget should be driven into google adwords for now. Chances are, it will be the most effective platform for your company. Ask yourself what you would do if you encountered a problem with a household appliance; thats right, you would google it. This goes without saying, but use adwords to target the London area.

Fifthly, get business cards. Each time you provide a service for someone, give them your business card; each time you tell someone about what you do, give them your business card. While there is no way to guarantee that you are dealing with a legit site, there are “red flags” to look for in a fake sites.

1) Payment options, do they include Western Union, moneygram, paypal and bank transfer? Some scam sites will accept credit cards but most prefer those 4 options which are anonymous for the scammer to pick up the cash and disappear.

Western Union and moneygram do not verify anything on the form the sender fills out, not the name, not the street address, not the country, not even the gender of the receiver, it all means absolutely nothing. The clerk will not bother to check ID and will simply hand off your cash to whomever walks in the door with the MTCN# and question/answer. Neither company will tell the sender who picked up the cash, at what store location or even in what country your money walked out the door. Neither company has any kind of refund policy, money sent is money gone forever.

Paypal can only get your money back if there is money left in the scammer’s paypal-linked bank account. Scammers know this and will immediately withdrawal your money and disappear. No money in the scammer’s paypal-linked bank account means absolutely no possibility of refund for you.

2) Contact options, is it a free email address such as gmail, hotmail or yahoo? Is it a chat box? Scam sites will rarely list a phone number or street address.

Scammers love to create free email addresses and rarely will use a paid server. Email is easy to ignore and block and free email addresses are easy to open and close completely anonymously. Chat requests are easy to block via ip address.

3) Shipping options, do you actually get to choose the option at check out? Fake sites will frequently say “free shipping” and “tracking numbers emailed” but, if they ship anything at all, will use the post office, cheap, slow and no account number needed.

Fake sites will frequently show icons for UPS, FedEx, DHL and TNT but then at check out will “ship” via EMS, the Chinese post office. If they send a “tracking number” good luck getting it to work on the EMS website. You will need even more luck trying to contact EMS when your tracking stops and your “package” is lost somewhere.

4) The icons at the bottom of the page, are they just copy/pasted pictures or links to actual sites?

Fake sites will often have icons for Verisign, McAfee, Paypal and other companies at the bottom of the home page. Those should be live links to that company’s website. Fake sites can’t risk linking to real sites so they just use badly copied pictures instead.

Whenever suspicious or just plain curious, google everything, website addresses, names used, companies mentioned, phone numbers given, all email addresses, even partial sentences from the emails as you might be unpleasantly surprised at what you find already posted online. You can also post/ask here and every scam-warner-anti-fraud-busting site you can find before taking a chance and losing money to a scammer.

There are scam busting sites with online lists of the names scammers use, their email addresses, stock copy/paste emails, paid-for-in-cash cell phone numbers, stolen pictures and fake websites they use. You could start your search at one of those sites.

As a second choice i would look at .biz or.us before looking at .net

think of google. When people think of ggogle, they think of where to go to search. They don’t think of it as the search engine by the company named google. To them google is what will get you resultd you’re looking for. Pop culture doesn’t say let’s “yahoo” this or “ask” that. They just google. That’s why google has now been introduced in the oxford english dictionary as a stand alone english word meaning engine search…the same goes for .com…. People automatically think of dot com first and not the others. Dot net has an unplesant strange ring to it..like a wanna be that will never be.

You would be surprised (or maybe not) at how many young people say almost the exact same things in the same way. As a matter of fact, all you have to do is a search here on YahooAnswers and you will find tons of questions just like this and tons of answers as well.

Sometimes I’m torn between telling people who ask these questions to start by getting some training and telling them to just go get a head shot and go to some casting website and start submitting. But reason wins over me and I have to tell you that if you really want to be an actor, you should first put your big rush to do it to the side and slow down. Build your base first. The competition is fierce and if you don’t prepare yourself really well, you will become just another statistic of the many who WANTED TO, but never made it.
I even created a new video on my site on the exact same topic: The reasons why most aspiring actors never make it.

You might have heard in school when you talked about Abraham Lincoln, that he is the author of a famous quote. He said, “If I had three hours to chop down a tree, I would use the first hour to sharpen the axe.”

If you don’t sharpen your axe first, there will inevitably be a time when you will have to stop chopping and sharpen it, so you might as well do it now.

What does that mean? Get some acting training. Find a good school and a good teacher to help you learn how to act. Start taking drama classes in school and doing school plays. Just do some things that will help you to learn how to act.

While you are doing that, try and understand what it really means to be an actor, what actors do…really while they are trying to get work, how little money most actors make, why actors struggle to make ends meet and how successful actors are able to continuously get work. You need to learn business skills, networking skills, communication skills and a lot more.

When you decide to become an actor, you are making a decision to run your own business. Now I know you are young, but if you can start to grasp these concepts now, you will position yourself ahead of your competition. You might need some help on that last one about business, but if you talk to successful actors, you will learn what I mean. For example, you need to be good at making contacts with the right people. There are ways to do that and ways not to do it.

On the other hand if all you ever aspire to is to work background work or be an extra on Disney or something like that, then don’t worry too much about all that stuff I just said and just go and try and get extra work. That’s fairly easy to get considering that the majority of all acting work is background work and smaller roles anyway.

But you have to know that if you really want to make a big splash as an actor, sooner or later you will need some real experience and some real good training, because that’s what the really good actors have and if you want to compete with them, you will need it too. Extra work is great in my opinion at the very beginning just to start and see how things are on set and how real actors prepare and perform and to see how set directions are given, but it will not make your career and if you do it too much, some say that it will damage your chances of having a real career. Some industry professionals discourage it for those who really want to pursue a serious acting career.

The thing is, you can do both if you want. You can go to school, take acting classes and still work as an extra or even try to do some community theatre while you are learning the craft.

It could be anything from £400 – £2,000 or more. I think it is Data Monitor or Brad on line some the larger companies charge by use so they sell you a disc or a computor download and you are allowed to use the list a given amount of times and then you have to re negotiate terms for additional use.

I would think a marketing company that’s optimistic about your product / idea would be able to direct you to venture capitalists, or other potential investors. If $700 is all it takes, you might want to hit up your friends and family for small donations.

Be sure to check out the legitimacy of the company that you’ve found; you don’t want to be conned out of any money with empty promises!

Ive worked customer service for a long time now and i know that absolutly the best place to get the information is to call on their toll free line if they have one and ask all the questions that you have. They should either be able to get you the exact info, or direct you to a website that has the info. I also know that several corporations make their info available on their website in some sort of “investors” page that lists things you would want to know before buying their stock, or if you have already bought their stock.

I went back to school last year with the intention of making a total career change and looked at TONS of online colleges. One of my requirements was that it be reasonably priced (as opposed to the $9 billion/credit that the U of Phoenix charges!); I also wanted a school that offered an entirely online education, was fully accredited, and didn’t require a lot of bizarre classes.

I picked Indiana Business College…and it was a really good choice. It’s a “real” school that has an online division. They charge somewhere in the neighborhood of $200/credit, although many of their classes are five-credit classes as opposed to the usual three or four. My experience with their financial aid department was unbelievably positive; one thing I remember from going to college the first time around was how many hoops you had to jump through to get your financial questions answered – or do anything else. And I have to say, not only is the financial aid analyst assigned to me extremely nice and helpful, so is everyone else I’ve contacted. They were great about transferring credits, and they reply to my emails about administrative stuff very quickly and helpfully. They charge (I think) $90 per class in fees, and those are the only fees I ever see. I also can email the offices for the master book list so I can shop for books on Amazon or eBay and get them much cheaper than I could shopping at the bookstore. You’re required to have a computer with XP and office 2007 (I got grandfathered in on the 2003 requirement, and so far they haven’t made me upgrade) along with an internet connection. They’re pretty firm about missing homework or tests due to technical issues, so it’d be a good idea to have a backup plan in case your internet connection goes on the blink.

Two of the big reasons I chose this school that I haven’t already mentioned are their tuition freeze and their test-out policies. If I remain in school continuously, my tuition never increases. Find me another college that can say that! And if there are classes that I feel are redundant (because of life experience or whatever) I can test out of them. I’ve done it for three classes already (and passed all three) and plan a couple more. They charge $30, you have to find your own proctor, and if you get a 90 or better on the test you get full credit.

They’re very flexible. They’re up-front about prerequisites and once you’re in your classes, you’ve got a week to complete that week’s assignments or tests. As long as you have your work done and turned in by midnight on Sunday for that week, it’s up to you when school is “in session.” They have discussion boards for class participation and so far my instructors have been very good about answering questions. But the time I spend on school is totally up to me – I can take a test at 4 a.m. If I really wanted to (not likely, but…) and if I grasp a certain unit quickly I can breeze right through it rather than having to sit in a classroom, bored. And I don’t actually have to go anywhere.

I think the one big thing that made up my mind for me was how much time they spent before I even officially applied answering all of my questions and helping me decide if the school was a good fit. I wish I could have done something like this the first time around. I finished school, but I really disliked it. And all of the things I disliked have turned into positives. So if you have the self-discipline to handle online classes, go for it!

3) Printing only the required fields any time
4) Portability of files

To safeguard your files from being damaged in an accident, you can keep a regular backup of all your data. You can take the backup on a hard disk/CD/DVD or a tape. The frequency of backup will depend on the criticality of your data. In general, people take daily backups.
Also, you ca buy some space online where you can keep the backup if you dont want to write the discs.

You can encrypt your data before you transmit it to an online storage company. They should be using a secure connection between you and them anyway – but this would add another level of protection.

Their systems should be set up as a RAID – array type storage, so that even if a drive should fail, the redundancy of the system keeps your data intact.

Their environment should be temperature/humidity controlled guarded with alarms for such and fire/water. Their enviornment should be safer than what a small business would normally provide.

Local backups on tape drives are nice, but many times, it’s found out that the backup(s) really didn’t work, so you carry a blank tape home, thinking you’re protected from data loss, and really you’re not.

Depending on your data volume and pricing of storage space, it’d probably make sense to do it. I’d check out their facilities first, if at all possible. Get the specs in writing – how it’s set up, how you are protected, what protection features do they have on their environment, etc.

Yes, it is possible to outsource your company’s file server. The fastest way to do so is to rent a fully managed dedicated server from an online company that specializes in offering such service. They can get you up and running within a few days.

Here are some must-have features to shop for:

1) At least 100Mbps bandwidth
2) Redundant or mirrored hard drives
3) Fully managed service
4) Off-server backup storage

The pros being that a fully managed firm takes care of patching and maintaining your server so you don’t have to hire personnel to do this job. Also, you don’t have to worry about the logistics involved in keeping a server cool and racked up in the office. The cons being there’s a monthly service fee involved when renting a dedicated server online.

You stand a better chance in getting a low-cost loan from SBA rather than finding a grant to help start your business.

There is only a scammer trying to steal your hard-earned money and maybe your freedom.

The next email will be from another of the scammer’s fake names and free email addresses pretending to be the “assistant” and will demand you accept packages purchased with stolen credit cards, hi-jacked paypal accounts and spoofed bank transfers, at YOUR home address. Then you are suppose to use a stolen UPS/FedEx billing account number to send the electronics, clothing and jewelry overseas. When the websites, credit card/paypal/bank account owners and UPS/FedEx discover the fraud, you get the real life job of paying back ALL of them. Then the local law enforcement comes knocking asking why are you fencing stolen merchandise for someone you never met, don’t know their real life name and have no idea in what country they really live.

If you have responded to a scammer, you are on his ‘potential sucker’ list, he will try again to separate you from your cash. He will send you more emails from his other free email addresses using another of his fake names with all kinds of stories of being the perfect buyer, great jobs, lottery winnings, millions in the bank and desperate, lonely, sexy singles. He will sell your email address to all his scamming buddies who will also send you dozens of fake emails all with the exact same goal, you sending them your cash via Western Union or moneygram.

Do you know how to check the header of a received email? If not, you could google for information. Being able to read the header to determine the geographic location an email originated from will help you weed out the most obvious scams and scammers. Then delete and block that scammer. Don’t bother to tell him that you know he is a scammer, it isn’t worth your effort. He has one job in life, convincing victims to send him their hard-earned cash.

Whenever suspicious or just plain curious, google everything, website addresses, names used, companies mentioned, phone numbers given, all email addresses, even partial sentences from the emails as you might be unpleasantly surprised at what you find already posted online. You can also post/ask here and every scam-warner-anti-fraud-busting site you can find before taking a chance and losing money to a scammer.

6 “Rules to follow” to avoid most fake jobs:
1) Job asks you to use your personal bank/paypal account and/or open a new one.
2) Job asks you to print/mail/cash a check or money order.
3) Job asks you to use Western Union or moneygram in any capacity.
4) Job asks you to accept packages and re-ship them on to anyone.
5) Job asks you to pay visas, travel fees via Western Union or moneygram.
6) Job asks you to sign up for a credit reporting or identity verification site.

Avoiding all jobs that mention any of the above listed ‘red flags’ and you will miss nearly all fake jobs. Only scammers ask you to do any of the above. No. Exceptions. Ever. For any reason.

If you google “fake re-shipping job”, “fraud money mule scam”, or something similar you will find hundreds of posts from victims and near victims of this type of scam.

Wasting a scammer’s time legally and safely is called “scambaiting”. If you google that word, you will find sites where you can read scambaits, post up the emails and email addresses of scammers, post up a fake website, read up on how to alert a hosting company that they are hosting a fake website, ask questions and learn all about the hobby of scambaiting.

It never ceases to amaze how Americans give answers to questions posted on the UK site convinced that they know the answer.

Frankly, however well intentioned, they know nothing about the UK market.

The demolish and rebuild cost is usually condsiderably lower than the value of the property. Why ? Because in the UK houses are the cheap bit…..it’s the LAND that is expensive, and your land doesn’t burn down. For example take two similar houses, one in central London and the other out in the sticks, property values will be very very different …but rebuild values will be almost the same. As an example my own house is valued at around £450,000…. But the rebuild costs are only about £125,000.

Most (not all) UK buildings insurance covers any home upto a rebuild value of £ 250,000, it would be unusual for a house to have a rebuild cost over that and you start getting into specialist stuff where internet shopping may not be appropriate.

For us mere mortals and indeed 95% of the UK population though, buying through the internet is a cheap and effecient way of buying your house and contents cover.

The answers you see above saying ‘see an agent’ are almost certainly posted by American ‘agents’ who

a) make their living selling insurance so don’t want anyone using the internet and
b) don’t understand the UK insurance market.

As others have pointed out, there are no laws specifically prohibiting this, but no one will enter into any contracts with minors unless there is an adult guardian/officer who will accept the responsibility.

You see, minors are not legally bound to a contract because they are considered to lack the ability to fully understand the consequences. I know, most adults don’t fully understand the consequences, either, but the law magically makes you an adult at 18.

So, depending on the industry (and subsequent liabilities) you may want to form a separate legal organization (LLC or corporation) with an adult as Director on the Board of Directors. This makes the adult an officer who can sign contracts on behalf of the company.

I work in the optical industry and I say to patients to buy, if you can find it, Ciba Vision’s “AO Sept”. It uses an effervescent (fizzes while disinfecting and cleans your lenses) solution. It is in a blue/ purple colored box (larger size). Try to find it in a drugstore. Check the pharmacy section. Or go to Wal-mart, Sam’s club or any CVS and Walgreen’s. This is the best on the market. Use this AS DIRECTED. Then go back to the optometrist office for a free sample of this. Get free samples of re-wetting drops for dry eyes (for the summer/winter season).

You can call the company (shareholder services) ask them for their Transfer agent (name, address & the direct departmental phone number),

Call the transfer agent (it probably is a bank), give e them the name of the company, the number of shares you have (had), and your social security number.

Tell them you need a replacement certificate since the original is lost.

I looked on crutchfield.com, and they sell little boxes by a company called PAC ADAPTER that interface between your steering wheel audio controls and select aftermarket car stereos.

A lot of aftermarket stereos come with wireless remotes. The PAC SWI-X wires into your steering wheel controls, and commands the stereo through the wireless remote. Check compatibility with the stereo you’re interested in. Also, this solution can have problems when there is direct sunlight on the face of your stereo.

Direct wire-in adapters that don’t use the IR remote are available for some aftermarket stereos:
• PAC SWI-PS – for some Pioneer and Sony stereos
• PAC SWI-JACK – for some Alpine, Clarion, JVC, and Kenwood stereos

In home based businesses, depending on which one you get involved in, it usually takes about 2 to 4 weeks to start making an average income. (about the same time frame as your first payroll period) Then as you keep working your business, 4 to 6 weeks to increase that income, and 3 to 6 months to be self sufficient. That is only if you put the time and effort into it. If you just say “I started a business” and don’t put any time or the effort needed in your business, then you won’t make an income.
Most people have full time jobs and run their business on the side. When their business reaches the income level they desire, they put their normal jobs down and continue with their business growing. Other’s dive into it head first and tackle it and get it going faster. Either way, you have the same opportunity to make a sufficient amount of income.
I don’t know what you enjoy doing, hobbies, interests etc, so I’m not sure which home based business to refer you over to.

You will need to have a BN. You can open one online, and can obtain the information for deductions online as well. Unless you’re willing to allow the person to have tremendous freedom, it wouldn’t meet the criteria for them to be a self employed/contract person; they’d be your employee, like the other poster sugested. CRA also puts on small business seminars aimed at instructing you on Payroll deductions. They are free.

For information on employee/self employed:
As a self-employed person (as you know) there is some degree of risk of loss. You have a space dedicated to child care, you advertise to get my clients, you could lose money if no-one signed up. You will likely want control over your relationship with this assistant (you’ll decide their hours of work, you’ll provide their work location, you’ll provide all the toys, food, etc, for the chilldren, all of the clients will be yours, and not theirs, they won’t be allowed to hire a replacement to show up in their stead, etc).

You won’t need a permit because there is no regulation in the clothing industry. Permits typically only apply if you are selling guns, alcohol, investment services, farming, bank products, etc. Clothing is pretty harmless though so you are good.

You will need to file taxes though. Also since you are selling merchandise you will have to pay state sales tax. For information on this look up your state and local sales tax rates.

Essentially all you need to do is start selling your product. Keep track of how much revenue you earn (how much gross money you get from each sale) and then subtract your expenses such as:

Cost of Goods Sold (the cost of the clothing when you bought it)
Wage expenses (if you have employees)
Operating expenses
Sales taxes due
etc

At the end of the year either you or an accountant that you hire are going to have to take all of these piles of receipts that you kept and logs of revenues and expenses that you kept and will create an income statement.

From there you will be able to calculate the taxes that you owe the government so that you can pay them. Yipee!! 🙂

You might consider taking a crash course in accounting 101, buying a book, or just call an accountant. It is better to start off on the right foot. The most annoying thing about owning a business is keeping track of your records. However this is critical because you will need to pay taxes, and if you ever plan to expand your business, these well kept records will help you to get loans, attract investors, and manage your ever increasingly complicated business.

I called the Printing company that I always use http://www.printfirm.com and they told me that if I had a good scanner that would scan the image at @ 900 dpi, then shrink it down to 350 dpi it would be close. They said it would never be as good as the digital file but it would be close. My suggestion is to give it a try and don’t be afraid to play around with the colors when you scan so that you get what your looking for. If you want you can give the guys at print firm a call. Third. What are your resources – to sustain you. Do you have an income while you are getting started. I started a business once and I had little cash to start but I was able to work it part time for 18 months while I worked full time. I was able to reinvest any earnings back into my business.
The internet cafe is an interesting idea but the cafe or the food I think is what will draw people in.

Making money online can be a real challenge, and I can tell from your question that you have probably looked at a lot of the hype that is out there. You are right to believe that most of it is hype. Many internet marketers put more effort into their sales page than they do into the product itself.

Working at home requires a certain type of disciple that most don’t realize until they have gotten into it. I think that most people who do not do well on the Internet have this problem. We are programmed to ‘go to work’ and anything outside of that just doesn’t register in our brain to get us ‘working’ the way we need to to make money online to the point of making a living.

So its important to get into a program that has a ‘complete’ structure from A – Z and has a relatively low risk proposition. Most programs today are duplicates of duplicates of duplicates because the programs themselves teach people to just duplicate their program to sell to others.

The Internet marketing gurus of the world have so many followers that it makes it almost impossible to follow their programs… Most of them are outdated, overpriced, and oversold because to be frank, it is only what they are doing that makes the most success. Yes, training systems. Those who cannot do, teach, and that is the life of the typical Internet Marketer these days. All the ebooks and programs they have flooded the net with are their true source of success, not the information in the product you buy.

I have been a part of many many programs over the years and have had experience with every sector and some of the so called gurus. I can tell you that there is one program that stands out from the rest that only recently was introduced. The beauty of this program is that it is dummy proof and does not rely on you investing a ton of time on thing that may or may not turn out results. Thus, the risk factor is really low. The program is called The Big Fat Rich Loser Network (you can see it at http://www.bigfatrichlosernetwork.com ) and their unusual method to getting rich is one of the most original and refreshing programs I have seen in a long time.

My first question is this — did you go to business school for an MBA, or for your undergrad? And did you go to one of the Magic 8 schools, assuming you are from the US (Harvard, Sloan, Chicago GSB, Stanford, Kelloggs, Wharton, Columbia, Stern)?

Good investment banks (like the ones you mentioned) usually pick from a select few B-schools that they frequent, usually from the MBA programs. Sometimes, they go for schools not necessarily because they are the best but because of proximity (which is why a lot of Wall Street firms and banks interview from smaller NY schools, compared to much better schools elsewhere, say, the mid-west).

Outside of that, it is very hard for you to get in unless you have some contacts within the banks, or have an excellent track record to prove your skills.

Usually, the best way to break into the industry from the outside is to get an internship at the place of your choice, prove yourself, and use that as leverage to get a full time job. However, since you are graduating in a month, that is no longer an option.

The other thing for you to do is to write the CFA exams — even if you are not from the preferred list of schools, additional qualifications (such as CFA) usually go a long way.

What I would recommend, of course, is to take a job at a relatively smaller financial institution in the area (e.g. A hedge fund or PE firm) and work your way up to one of the bigger i-banks. I’ve a friend who worked at DE Shaw, went to school for computational finance and is currently employed at UBS.

I would also recommend talking to your school (since you are interested in finance, I’d recommend talking to the finance profs) and asking them if they have any contacts. A lot of finance profs have usually spent a good deal of time in the industry and tend to have contacts there.

Unless you are married to the idea of staying in the US, you could also try applying to i-banks elsewhere in the world — usually, they are quite happy to hire an English speaking westerner in another region (e.g. China). It might be easier to break in, and would give you a good step up in the right direction.

Then, there is networking. Go to the Vault forums and ask questions, find people and talk to them. If you are in the NY area, find a local bar that i-bankers frequent, post a message on Craigslist etc.

Finally, go ahead and apply — as long as you are well prepared and know your stuff, you may just strike gold. Besides, even if it doesn’t work out, it does not rule out you applying again, at a later time.

As far as the actual application goes, you could go ahead and apply online, but I’d also recommend talking to the i-banks themselves. Call them up, tell them that you are interested, ask questions, ask if you can meet with them, be very frank and open about what you want to do etc. So, unless you’re calling Schwarzman or Blankfein, most banks are usually quite amicable in this regard.

At the end of the day, initiative and perseverance are what’s needed. Of course, a penchant for working 100 hour weeks doesn’t hurt, either! 🙂 So, good luck!

I like to ‘script’ my response and to modify it for the agency: e.g. If someone had a very good proposal but it didn’t quite fit, I talk about the other pitch had that made me select them (experience in working with a company in our industry or…); if it was an agency with a bad idea or a proposal that didn’t follow our ‘brief’ at all, then I often will say that.

But to get to the nitty-gritty………………..:

There are no secrets………..just common sense + hard work!

Be honest and accurate in your descriptions – One-sentence descriptions are for lazy sellers. One paragraph should be sufficient for most items. My general guideline is the more expensive (read higher priced) an item, the more you should ‘talk it up.’ It won’t be time wasted. Use lots of adjectives in your descriptions. Adjectives make prose and your items come alive. Without them, prose is dull and your items less appealing. Just add a little ‘sizzle’ and even have a little fun with it. In short, make your descriptions stand out above the crowd.

Be professional – use good English with no spelling errors – AVOID ALL CAPS TEXT

PICTURES:

Including one picture is a MUST, more pictures for higher priced items. Make sure your pictures are clear. There are far too many pictures on ebay that are dark. If prospective buyers can’t see your items clearly, your items, more than likely, will not fetch the closing prices they deserve. To remove darkness, use any photo editor to add some brightness and a wee bit of contrast.

Eliminate clutter. Prospective bidders don’t want to know what kind of cereal you eat or what kind of kitchen table or bedspread you have. Use a SOLID backdrop when taking your pictures as you want to focus all of the attention on your item. In short, the one and only thing you want in your picture is the item being sold. A SOLID white or light blue backdrop is best. However, there are certainly items that won’t show well on a light backdrop. In these cases, use a darker backdrop. And for gosh sake, don’t even think of using a plaid blanket as a backdrop for your pictures as I once saw on ebay. You should also crop the photos in your photo editor. Good pictures can add 5% to 10% to final closing prices.

GOOD DESCRIPTIONS + GOOD PICTURES = GOOD PRESENTATION. This is what you should strive for.

COMMUNICATION:

GOOD Communication is a must – Always notify buyers when you mail their items. It is not only a courtesy you would want and expect as a buyer but it is also both good customer service and good business practice. After all, you are the ‘President & CEO’ of your ‘company’ running your business but using ebay as your selling medium. In short, conduct your business so that it reflects well on you as a person. Treat everyone as a human being, not a living being and this includes people who have inquiries about your items, not just your buyers. Prospective buyers making these inquiries could ultimately be the winning bidders and possible repeat customers.

TIPS TO MAXIMIZE PROFITS:

Do not limit your auctions to one country. SELL WORLDWIDE. The reason is elementary. You now have access to the largest market ebay has to offer. Limiting your auctions to only one country also limits your potential profits. A basic business tenet is, ‘the greater the potential market, the greater the potential to maximize profits.’ But do note in your listing that PayPal is the only form of payment you will accept from overseas bidders/buyers. Through experience, you will learn that there are certain problem countries. Italy seems to be one of them. Mail sent to buyers in Italy very often ‘mysteriously disappears.’ If this is the case, just note in your listing you sell to all countries EXCEPT (name(s) here).

However, if you decide to limit sales to only one country, such as the USA, never say NO when you receive an email asking if you would ship to Taiwan, Germany, Australia or wherever. The reason is that you have a ‘FISH ON THE HOOK!’ This person will bid! When he or she does, this may force a previous bidder to enter another, higher bid or force later, first time bidders to come in with higher bids. So always say YES to these emails if you want to maximize your profits. But do say that PayPal is the only form of payment you will accept from these overseas bidders

Avoid selling ‘nickel and dime’ items. People who list and sell a steady stream of items that close for $5 or less are wasting their time. Less expensive, similar items ($5 or less) are best sold as a group to save time. If you have a large number of these cheaper, similar items, divide them up into sub lots of three, four or five.

More expensive (higher priced), similar items are best sold individually to maximize profits. There are ebay ‘vultures’ who just love to swoop down on similarly grouped items in one listing. When they win these auctions, they turn around and sell the items individually and, in most cases, get one and a half to 2 times and sometimes three times what they paid for them on an average item basis. I know this works. When I had more time (read unemployed), I was one of these ‘vultures.’ This is one of those situations where the parts are worth more than the whole. However, do be cautious if you venture into this arena. You have to know your merchandise. Stay in those areas you are familiar with. You can’t jump in blindly to any and every auction that has grouped items.

If you can buy a large lot of similar merchandise for $100 to $300 and turn it around for $150 to $900, it works out very nicely, indeed! Most buyers of these large lots will be vultures as well so you could be ‘butting bids.’ Keep in mind that the higher the closing price at ebay, the less your profit on the turnaround. It’s not an exact science and it does take a little experience to really know what you’re doing but you can’t be afraid to go out on a limb. That’s where the fruit is. When I see an auction of grouped items it tells me loud and clear that the seller is far more interested in getting rid of their stuff the quickest, easiest way possible and ‘be done with it’ rather than in making a decent profit or profit at all.

Lastly, keep in mind that experience is the best teacher. Start off slowly listing only two or three items and see how that goes for you. Once you get your feet wet and gain confidence, start listing more items on a weekly basis. First off, you have to have your home ready to sell…..Make sure everything is s p i c and span….Try to remove any personal items, and even remove furniture if it looks too cluttered…..Make sure the front of the house is trimmed and cleaned up….If possible plant some flowers to make it inviting…..The key is to declutter and remove items which make the home look cramped…..You want to make the home look as spacious as possible….

About marketing, you need to place an ad in the paper, and have an open house…..If someone comes in and makes an offer, make sure they have there financing in place, otherwise they may tie up your house waiting for financing….Once they make the offer, take it to your attorney and have him look it over, he will also guide you on the disclosure form, termite report, survey report, and other documents you will need to sell it….My attorney charged me $275 for his fee and it was money will spent! If the buyer doesn’t know how to ‘make an offer’ you write up the contract with your attorney’s help and present it to the buyer….

I am very conservative and I am also in the real estate biz so I’ll tell you the truth about it. It is not about bad decisions it really was about the loans here is why.

Never in history had I seen property values sky rocket like they did pre 2005. It was remarkable! So the banks had very very little risk. It became a supply and demand to get the loans done as the risk was so low (due to propertys going up and up so high).

So what happened is buyers shopped around for good rates and the competition was fierce. The best rates won out and you saw folks getting in for zero down and I mean z e r o.

Now…all this would be great and nothing bad would have happened as the chances of a r.e. Market slow down and crash was practically non existent.

But then….the worst possible scenario happened.

The real estate market took a complete reversal and it sent shockwaves of panic through the market.

On top of that you have more bad luck..the rates started going up and if you look at how fast real estate had gone up before the problem is that it had gone up MUCH FASTER than the incomes of the borrowers.

So you had property bought at HIGH prices with High loans and borrowers not earning more to keep up then you had the 1-2 punch where values shot downward.

Now the owners couldn’t refinance and if they had some lates FOR SURE nobody would touch them with a10 foot pole.

So you now have upside houses where what is owed on it is more than what it is worth.

So the next step is people tried to take more loans out, second loans if you will with what, if any equity they had. Some milked the houses for all they were worth and walked away.

So in my opinion if folks knew the market was going to change like that so fast they wouldn’t have bought and gotten those loans BUT, and this is the big but….The borrowers and the banks went on what they were actually SEEING in the market place.

And in fact, throughout history, real estate has mostly gone up steadily and quickly during some years. During the Reagan administration for example they shot up fast and didn’t come down. During the Clinton administration, although they didn’t shoot up fast the prices did go up throughout the Clinton years.

Then in the Bush administration it actually went up higher than ever per %.

New home building also increased higher than ever…so now we have a glut of inventory on the market with scared bankers and now even in New York they are starting to sue some of the mortgage bankers which further causes fear in the market.

I cannot for a moment imagine that all those folks made poor decisions. I have met these folks and they are as sane as you and I. They looked at the market..they bought real estate that was going upward…they bought based on sound facts.

Nothing like this has ever happened in the real estate market at least in our lifetimes. So nobody would have predicted it.

To make a point some of the wisest Investors (you know the names) bought real estate only to see it plummet in value. Even they, yes…even the geniuses of finance can’t predict the future. Yes even Warren Buffet lost money in the real estate he had just bought.

Truth is…Nothing is gauranteed ever and life is full of risks. In my opinion what has happened is a natural and normal thing.

Capitalism is not based on things being fair. Nobody says it is. But communism is failing miserably. Socialism fails miserably…because by making things fair they take away from the productive and give to the unproductive.

With all its flaws it is still the best system in the world.

You don’t even need a university degree at all to be a Financial Advisor, let alone an MBA. (Also hard to do an MBA if you don’t have a BBA…can’t do a Masters of Physics unless you ..y’know, took Physics)

Most Financial Advisor firms are hiring constantly, they usually do get you to train with them first at no pay and then send you out on your own.

It’s a totally commision based business, and you train and work for them initially for free, so they’ll pretty much hire anyone who doesn’t seem like a total waste of time.

After that you’ve got to develop your own business, they’ll give you a start on how, but its really up to you. Prepare for the idea of working a few years before building enough clients to make a profit.

The companies usually have active recruiters looking for a sales force, call the company you’re interested in and ask them about it. You could also visit any job fair, I garauntee there will be no less than 5 Advisor companies present recruiting Agents.

I don’t think it’s a very good job, the vast majority do quit with losses in the first 2 years, but those who do become successful can make some money, but it’s very work intensive and hours and inital investment are large.

‘Breaking into the field’ is kind of like saying you’d like to ‘Break into door to door vacuum sales’..Just go tell them you want to, and unless you’re retarded, you’re in…in some cases, even if you are.

PS though, Do NOT work for WFG. They’ll bind your hands with crazy compliance. Work for something with a big enough name that it can help you market yourself, Primerica, Investor’s Group…something more like that.

I have to assume advertising is by far the largest overall revenue source, certain paid services that once worked became unprofitable when someone else started offering it for free, some niches like dating may make more from memberships and sticky subscriptions, but again the biggest? Dating site Plenty of Fish is advertising based.

You have to offer a very exclusive valuable service to get people to subscribe to it. Some internet guru money making courses costing thousands may be the most artificially high priced service I have seen, the promise of multiplying your investment is easier to sell than spiritual harmony.

That is both a great question and a very difficult one to answer. It varies so much based on the TYPE of website you have and ultimately who is the target audience.

As a general rule, it requires a significant amount of traffic to generate money from advertising. People are being bombarded more and more with ads online and therefore have started to ignore them at a much higher level than before.

Now that said, if your website content and therefore your traffic is for a highly sought after demographic and the CPC (cost-per-click) rates are quite good, then even if you don’t’ have a ton of traffic but you have a sought after niche, then the chances of making money are there. Although it may not be a dramatic amount.

To summarize on the advertising side, unless your site is hugely popular, don’t expect to make a bunch.

Now taking the same factors into account, e.g. Targeted content and demographic, if you are providing quality service, content etc then from a revenue standpoint making money on a recurring basis is much more likely. If you have a price point for your subscription of under $10 per month, then you have an 85% chance that if you convert them into a subscriber ONCE then you will keep them for at least a year.

I know this is long but to summarize, it used to be advertising, now it’s subscriptions UNLESS you have amazing amounts of traffic.
