Your Questions About Email Marketing Reviews

Sandra asks…

What have you done to my email?

The new changes have SERIOUS bugs!!! And work erratically doing things like deletions and moves! Also the sync/targeting point of the mouse on the action buttons is WAY off causing most of this!!!
DO YOU EVEN HAVE CREDIBLE CODER VALIDATION REVIEW PRIOR TO LIVE PRODUCT POSTING? I’m appalled at your guile.
Arthur – What a politically contrived answer devised for your own gain, and pulled from your archive at that. Like what we do or bug off? How does that support Yahoo as a positive contributing member?

Jere answers:

Sounds like you’re in the market for a new email provider. I’m told that Inbox.com looks and works like Yahoo Classic. If you don’t like that one there are a dozen more you can try. You’re bound to like one more than you like the new Yahoo mail.

Top 13 Free Email Services – http://email.about.com/od/freeemailreviews/tp/free_email.htm

Once you’ve selected a new email provider you’ll need to move all your emails, contacts, and other data. The following article may be of assistance.

Transferring emails or data between accounts – http://help.yahoo.com/kb/index?page=content&id=SLN2681&actp=search&viewlocale=en_US&searchid=1373616197655&locale=en_US&y=PROD_MAIL_ML

If you have a lot of emails to move you could use a service like YippieMove – http://www.yippiemove.com/ – to transfer your emails from one account to another.

Once you’ve done that the only thing left to do is to close your Yahoo account.

Closing your Yahoo! Account – http://help.yahoo.com/kb/index?page=content&id=SLN2044&actp=search&viewlocale=en_US&searchid=1371525855712&locale=en_US&y=PROD_MAIL_ML

We’ll leave the light on in case you need to find your way back.

If you’re not interested in switching email providers then the articles below may help you find the piece of mind that you’re missing.

The following article let you change how you see Yahoo mail.

Changing your email viewing options – http://help.yahoo.com/kb/index?page=content&id=SLN8414&actp=search&viewlocale=en_US&searchid=1371529675016&locale=en_US&y=PROD_MAIL_ML

Fixing common problems in Yahoo! Mail – http://help.yahoo.com/kb/index?locale=en_US&y=PROD_MAIL_ML&page=content&id=SLN3223

I’m running the new full version of Yahoo mail on an 8 year old laptop running Windows XP SP 3 with 2 gig of memory. The tips in the article above were most helpful. I installed the latest versions of Java and Adobe Flash Player and installed the latest version of Firefox, Chrome, and Safari for Windows to see which on works best on my laptop. It runs almost as fast as Yahoo Classic and I’ve had no issues yet.

If the new full-featured version of Yahoo mail isn’t for you, you should check out Yahoo Basic. Your email is displayed in page view (25 emails per page) and you have the standard First page, Next page, Previous page, and Last page controls.

Learn more about Yahoo Basic – http://help.yahoo.com/kb/index?page=content&id=SLN5171&actp=search&viewlocale=en_US&searchid=1371527333887&locale=en_US&y=PROD_MAIL_ML

Switching between basic and full-featured Yahoo! Mail – http://help.yahoo.com/kb/index?page=content&id=SLN15090&actp=search&viewlocale=en_US&searchid=1371527333887&locale=en_US&y=PROD_MAIL_ML

If Yahoo Basic doesn’t suit you, you could upgrade to Yahoo Mail Plus and use one of the many email programs to download your email directly to your computer, thereby avoiding the new format entirely.

What is Yahoo! Mail Plus and how much does it cost? – http://help.yahoo.com/kb/index?page=content&id=SLN3421&actp=search&viewlocale=en_US&searchid=1371632428602&locale=en_US&y=PROD_MAIL_ML

Using an email program to read Yahoo! Mail – http://help.yahoo.com/kb/index?page=content&id=SLN15404&actp=search&viewlocale=en_US&searchid=1376167674749&locale=en_US&y=PROD_MAIL_ML

Steven asks…

Email marketing- Looking for follow up email ideas?

I’m always looking for good wording, and this time for a follow up email to a prospect that had received a detailed email from me about my product and the pricing detailed, and didn’t reply.

All ideas would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

Jere answers:

The best idea so far that I have on this will depend on the price of your product. Obviously if its a high price, high value, high ticket item then it may make sense to actually schedule a physical meeting or an online meeting with software such as go to webinar or go to meeting for example. And then go over your proposal live with your customer. If at all possible in your case, this will be the best possible scenario. What I found over the years is people have all sorts of different reasons why they dont email back and why they dont call back. You can never know what type of objections they might have before you call them. This method doesnt cost that much extra but allows you to close much more deals than when you actually email them. So to recap do not send them proposal, schedule a meeting to review the proposal instead. When you review the proposal, show it to them and give it to them as well.

Nancy asks…

For market analysis I need to target market description include statistics indicating size of the relevant market and my expected share of the target market after 1 year? I need to use data from a secondary research to provide a vivid description of my target market? ..not sure how I can interview other people because this product does not exist so who would they know how they feel about it?? I am lost and it is due Thursday, I emailed my teacher yet still no answer .

Susan asks…

Why Won’t My Android Market Open?

Okay, so, its been more than 5 months and I’ve still not been able to solve this problem. I have a Samsung Galaxy 551, and the android market in it, just won’t open up! :/ I’ve even tried downloadong the latest version, but it still won’t open. Every time I try to open it, a blank page appears which says loading. After waiting for an absurd amount of time it say “Retry”. What the hell am I supposed to do??!! Please help!

Jere answers:

Go to https://market.android.com/ and sign in with your email address and see if that works….many use the website more than the App as it gives you a better selection and the reviews are far better. You are able to choose the reviews with the star you’re looking for….also it remembers all the phones you ahve with the account lastly if it does not allow you the access then Market Android is letting you know that it no longer supports your system…..meaning time to update your OS

Maria asks…

I just poseted a review on motorcycle superstore.com?

And I wasn’t happy with the helmet I recieved so I wrote a bad review and about 3 hours later it was gone! So they deleted it? They only keep good reviews?

Jere answers:

Yes, they deleted your bad reviews because of their online marketing. You can complaint to them through email and phone. So don’t try to give them a bad review they will delete them always.

Your Questions About Internet Business Solutions

Susan asks…

How to share Internet cable connection — 10 points for detailed solution?

I have one cable connection and i want to use the internet in two computers in my home. i do not want to use wireless setup. If i buy a switch and connect the incoming cable in that switch and then join two computers to that switch, will this setup works?? or can you recommend other tested setup. please mention what type of hardware and cable type is required for this purpose.

Jere answers:

Depending on wht the modem style is there are 2 types

residentral- which has a single connection type (arris or motorole surfboard) which will reqire a router type to connedct to the moem

or business classs(with an additional 4 port switch built in (smc broadband modems) that can connect up to 4 computers at the same time …

Now depending on the modem you have you now must decide how you are going to do this the one port only works with the router because you ip range is based on 1 computer i’ll speak on i p range in a moment

and the businerss class is based on the ip range of four or more computers (usually 6 at the most ) for the i p range for business

now i p range meand hopw many computers your modem is designed to work off of because they need ip addresses for the network to use

..i am a network technician let me tell you what i designed and why
i have a building with a businewss class modem ( refer to defs above for understanding) that meqans 4 computers are running… But if u have 20 then you need to expand the network so i took a crossover cable and a 24 port switch and added it to one of the ports now i can now support 20 computers .. For the entire building… Goodluck

Internet business?

If I start up my own selling business, how do you collect the money for the Items that you sell. By cheque? Credit card? etc. What is the best way to work it.

Jere answers:

If you’re going to sell on the Internet and have your own website, it is better to give your customers as many options as possible — credit card, Paypal, check, money order, etc. However, priority should be made in making sure that you can accept credit card payments.

To be able to accept credit cards, you need to have a merchant account, payment processing gateway, SSL certificate for encryption of orders and a shopping cart. The leading payment processing gateway, Verisign Payflow services (now Paypal Merchant) https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_payflow-gateway-pricing-outside costs as much as $59.95 per month for maximum of 1,000 transactions plus set up fee of $249.

The SSL digital certificate to ensure secured transaction can set you back anywhere from $199 for two years with Thawte or $695 for two years with Verisign.

You can opt to skip a payment processing gateway and process your orders manually. You need a merchant account plus a credit card payment processing terminal. Verifone Omni 3750, for example, costs anywhere from $398 to $650. Note though that this is a very inefficient way to process payments and will only work if you get very few sales per day. Plus order processing is not instantaneous (you may not be in your computer when the order arrives).

The easiest way, though not the cheapest way, would be to use all-in-one payment solutions. Paypal has a Website Payments Pro https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_wp-pro-overview-outside which combines merchant account plus gateway for $20 a month plus processing fee per transaction

William asks…

Poll: Internet Business?

Would you be interested in an internet business that:

1. That allowed you to work from home on your computer.

2. Raised money for non-profit organizations.

3. Created a steady stream of income for you.

4. Does not require you to cold contact anyone that you do not know.

Jere answers:

Sounds like we are like minded. The only way to do a business online is on the computer. Creating a business that is a solution to others needs will provide a steady income. Why should anyone do cold contacting when you can use the Internet for positioning. Many people are searching the web for solutions each day. Does your business provide a solution to the searches? Then you can be well positioned. Is there any other way to do a Internet business?

BEST WISHES!

Your Questions About Doing Business Online Government

Charles asks…

What does it mean when you are a fiscal conservative and a social liberal?

I used to say I was a Liberal but I am actually not sure. I understand about being socially liberal because I am but I don’t really understand the part of being fiscally conservative. I took a politics quiz online and I got matched closest with Ron Paul and then Joe Richardson, followed by Hillary Clinton. Ron Paul is conservative and the two others are liberals. I am a little confused. Thanks!

Jere answers:

Ron Paul is certainly a conservative libertarian.

Being a liberal, I assume you prefer the government stay out of our business and allow us to put what we want into our own bodies.

Fiscal conservatism is an ideology which adheres to financial responsibility.

Ron Paul, while not an advocate of abortion, gay marriage, etc….he believes it shouldn’t be up to the government to determine one’s behavior so long as it is not infringing on your neighbor’s safety or their rights.

Being both socially liberal and fiscally conservative leads one to be categorized as a libertarian…..Welcome to the club!!!

Lizzie asks…

What is Legal Oversight or Regulatory Compliance?

I have do a business plan project for my Computer class. My business is a computer repair company. I have searched online trying to figure out what the legal oversight or regulatory compliance would be, but I can’t find anything. Can someone help me with this part of my assignment or even a site that would give me info on this question? Much appreciated.

Jere answers:

1. Regulatory Compliance:

-In general, compliance means conforming to a rule, such as a specification, policy, standard or law. Regulatory compliance describes the goal that corporations or public agencies aspire to achieve in their efforts to ensure that personnel are aware of and take steps to comply with relevant laws and regulations.

Michael asks…

Does the US government have any right to regulate online gambling?

There is currently a bill which would, in effect make it impossible to play poker online. I think it’s none of their business, what do you thinK?

Jere answers:

The short answer is yes, the government does indeed have the right to make gambling online illegal. In fact, it is already illegal technically. The reason the House is considering H.R. 4777 is because it’s been indicated that the present law might be construed as out of date and not pertaining to the Internet in a court of law.

We may not like it, but they do have the right. If you don’t like the way an elected official is performing, make sure you don’t vote for him or her in the future. Also encourage others to do the same. We get the government we deserve.

Like anything else with the federal government, money is an issue. If online gambling could be regulated and taxed with certainty, it would stand a good chance of being legal.

Donald asks…

What do i need to start up an online business?

I want to start up an online business, but what do i need in the sense of registering to the government? or copyright? etc…

Also if i have just started selling what taxes will i have deducted?

Thanks

Here is a pretty decent help list for setting up an online business:

Hope that helps you.

Linda asks…

Does government support business, or does business support government…think about it?

Jere answers:

Democrat government hates non-union private sector business.

Without non-union private sector taxes big government would not be big government.

So if you work for the government “You didn’t build that” American Tax Payers Built That.

Your Questions About Direct Marketing

Joseph asks…

what is the best easiest platform to start a web business?

I have several products services and information types I would like to bring to market. I have experience in direct marketing and direct sales and wish only to transform my sales abilities to a web based [platform with minimal risk and less investment? Share your secrets with me please?

Jere answers:

Depends what route you want to take.

If you want to handle the business side of it yourself you can have your own website built.
It would be best to find a programmer who will build you something on a cms called wordpress or joomla (you may or may not have heard of it).
They are “content management systems” and basically they set up the website and you can manage the website through the CMS. These are expensive, but a LOT cheaper than building a website from scratch because there is no need for complex code to allow you to update it, anyone can learn how to use joomla or wordpress. CMS systems also have plugins for you to sell products and service and usually accept payment through credit card, they process the payments and invoices and etc.

For example, out of highschool I wrote/produced music for singers. I wanted to take it to the web so I had a designer make me a website where I could sell my music, he created it on a cms system all I had to do was login to the back end and upload my music- set a price. It looked like a professional complex site from the front but simple from the back. Depending on how much capabilities you want/how many pages/ and how much you want to sell, This could cost anywhere from 600-5,000. Again, investment out to get money in. Having a website is great because it builds your brand but it costs a lot.

You can ALSO sell products and services through a 3rd party. This is anything like EBAY, there’s a ton of 3rd party sites out there to use. There are advantages and disadvantages. The advantage is they already have somewhat of a customer base and do a bit of the marketing for you. For example I couldn’t sell my ipad by creating a website for it, but I could sell it on EBAY because ebay already has a brand and does marketing, the customers are there already. Another example, I have a friend who teached web design, didn’t want to start a website so he created a course on a website called UDEMY.COM and made 4 grand in one night when they featured his course. Just try googling “sell my products online” or “Teach a course online” etc. Again, generally 3rd parties take a cut of your action and you’re furthering their business by making them money and bringing customers.

I’d have to know more of your situation to make a more accurate suggestion but that’s my take on your question. If you need more info message me.

Ruth asks…

What are the production processes for the following advertising methods?

A step-by-step list would be excellent for the following and you would get the 10 points!

-Print Advertising?
-TV Advertising?
-Radio Advertising?
Direct Marketing?
-Online Advertising?
This is not for an assignment, it’s for personal knowledge and usage.

Jere answers:

I’m not doing you assignment for you.I could help to clarify , but I’m not helping you to be lazy. Forget about Labour Day weekend!

Robert asks…

How do I find a Go-getter dynamic lady to head our operations in Mumbai?

I have been looking for a dynamic lady to head our Mumbai operations for almost two years. I am not succeeding. Does anybody know a good search agency in Mumbai that can help me in this objective? The person I am looking need to be smart and could be from direct marketing, public relations, modelling and acting background. Age between 25-35 years

Jere answers:

Check Banks -There are lots of relationship Managers around in the age group you mentioned and quite dynamic with a go getter attitude too.

Donna asks…

What’s an example of a sports sponsorship? That uses the 7 promotional tools?

Example of a sports sponsorship using the 7 promo tools: advertising, direct marketing , social media, brand/entertainment, sales promo, sales and public relations?
This is for my sports marketing class!

Jere answers:

Choose a sport you are interested in or knowledgable about and focus on that – just look for examples and use those for your insights – or you could try the sports or marketing press and see if they have some suitable articles

Nancy asks…

What would happen if the Car industry stopped all it’s advertising?

I’m assumin that there sales would dip slightly – but they’d save millions. And why do they rely so much on “image” advertising, and so little on direct marketing techniques?
Thank’s for answering my question with a question!

Jere answers:

They advertise because it BRINGS them millions.
If advertising is wasting money, they would have stopped long time ago, and the advertising industry would not exist.

Your Questions About Business Online Services

David asks…

what online services do most small businesses need?

Jere answers:

It really depends on what the business will be doing. Most small businesses around 10 employees do fine with business-class cable. This is about the same as a residential connection, but with better support, designed for businesses. This will allow all employees internet access, and as long as all the employees aren’t spending all day on the phone at the same time, a higher-speed cable connection will support VOIP as well.

Keep in mind that a $60/month cable connection provides around 6-8 Mbps, whereas a $250/month T1 is only 1.5Mbps. As long as you can live with an occasional service interruption of an hour or so, I would reccommend regular cable.

Michael asks…

How to start an online merchant business? What’s the prcess, Can Someone help?

I always wanted to start a business that I can run and manage from home, but I have nothing done it before, what lincense do I need? and how to go about obtaining them? Is there any business owner that can help me out?

Jere answers:

Steps to starting an Online Business
So you have a product or service and you wish to sell these products or services online. Consider the steps you will need to start an online business. So assuming the you have done your due diligence as far as knowing whether or not your product or service will sell and have priced your product accordingly you will need to do several things.

1. Incorporate your company

2. Build a web site
Register your domain name
Purchase a web hosting account

3. Get a merchant account to accept credit cards online

4. Build an online marketing plan
Open a Google Adwords account
Open a Yahoo! Search Marketing Account
Consider search engine optimization (depending on your industry)

Incorporate your company
You will need to incorporate your company and there are some extremely affordable ways to do so. You may not think you will need to incorporate but it makes things such as accounting, getting a merchant account and limiting liability much easier. You can incorporate and have all your letters within a couple weeks time and for less than $500 so be sure to shop around online for the right company to do your incorporation. One of the main reasons you should incorporate is to get a merchant account so that you can accept credit card payments online. Most merchant companies deposit and withdraw money from your bank account and they like to see a proper business bank account so in order to expedite your approval process get incorporated.

Build a web site
Of course, what’s an online business without a website. There are essentially three steps to building a website. You will need a domain name, a web hosting account and a web design with developed functionality. Register a domain name and set the name servers to those of the web hosting company you choose. You will need to ask the web hosting company what name servers to set your domain name to. There are hundreds of domain name registrars, I would strongly recommend going with an ICANN Accredited Registrar rather than an authorized reseller. Some domain name registrars are more affordable than others. There is no difference in the actual product you are buying as domain registrations are all the same therefore we recommend the more affordable options such as GoDaddy or Enom. Both of these companies have telephone support which is very important. When choosing a web hosting company you should find a web hosting company that offers a package that will accommodate your web development. If you need a SSL certificate to go along with your merchant account to accept credit cards you will need to find a hosting account that will allow for this. If your developers build your site in Php and MySQL you will need a web hosting account with MySQL. Talk with your developers and ask them what type of technologies you will need built into the web hosting account. Once again, do your research and ask other webmasters who they recommend. If you have a development team you work with then you will need to portray what you are trying to accomplish so that the team can build the right applications and implement the right design. If you don’t have a development or design team you work with try eLance which is a free lance marketplace.

Get a merchant account to accept credit cards online
Definitely do your research when choosing a company to set up your merchant account. Ask the merchant account company for some testimonials and if you can find a webmaster forum and ask what company the majority of the webmasters use. Different companies offer different monthly rates and discount rates. Some companies do a great job of locking you into a lengthy term agreement with a hefty cancellation fee. I have heard of merchant account companies seizing funds for different reasons. I don’t know about you but if I sold $10,000 in goods one month and my merchant account company decided they would only release $2000 I would reconsider the partner. Be sure to Google merchant account feedback and more importantly ask other webmasters who they use and what they think. Build an online marketing plan
So you have a web site showcasing your products or services and customers can purchase these products or services online. The next step is to get people to your web site. This is the most important part of running an online business. You can have the greatest prices on the greatest products with the coolest design but if nobody can find it then your sales are likely going to suffer. There is essentially two ways to get visitors to your web site. You can pay per click, per lead, per sale or per impression on another web site or search engine or you can get free traffic from the indexed results in a major search engine. Of course everyone wants the free traffic therefore this option is quite competitive. You can set up an account free of charge with Google Adwords and Yahoo! Search Marketing. For those of you not familiar with Adwords or Search Marketing these are the sponsored results on the top of the search results on Google and Yahoo. This is an instant way to get to the top of the search results for any web site. You pay per click and according to the amount you agree to spend for a particular keyword will depend on how high your listing will show. Be careful, start out very slow as you can burn through a ton of money very quickly as Google and Yahoo tend do get some traffic volumes. If your industry is unique and not terribly saturated such as Web Hosting then you may be able to consider search engine optimization. You will need to do your own research on search engine optimization as good seo information is hard to come by. Try some of the different forums that discuss some techniques and you should be able to get some decent information.

So that’s it, you should be well on your way to becoming a millionaire. Realistically, there are dozens of additional factors that go into starting a successful online business but this should give you a good start. You will learn as you go and don’t be afraid to ask questions and read everything you can.

Lizzie asks…

online business ideas?

I am interested in starting an online business and am wondering what type of thing you would like to find more of online? (example- things for infants and children, jewelry, anything…) ideas would be very helpful.

Jere answers:

If you really want to work online, I suggest you start your own business your best bet is partner up with a company that direct sales a product. That’s what we did. You can create a web site, or have the company set up a web site for you to sale the products and services. Or collaborate with different companies. After you’ve set it up, you’ll have to generate traffic to your site as means of either advertisement (which you’ll have to spend a lot of money doing) or the more effective way is word of mouth and referals, which are free and more effective. Partner up with a company that gives you monthly earnings from services that you put people on either by in person, phone or from your web site. What I mean is for instance, my husband partnered up with a telecommunications service provider and all the cellular phone companies. Someone purchase a cell phone from our web site, or a land line or Internet service or whatever, the product it’self your able to provide at a whole sale cost as a distributer through the providers. When someone gets on the services, the company pays you a percentage of that person’s billing every single month, month after month for the referal from you by word of mouth or by your web site.
If you’d like to see an example of what I’m talking about, your more then welcome to take a look at my web site at www.tiffanyvague.acnrep.com Take a look at the products and services there, tour the company etc and to give you an idea of how you should have each of the companies and make extra money off the effort that you provided to these companies.
Once you decide on a product or products and services, you need to start driving “traffic” to your web site. A lot of work but well worth the effort when your income starts going and rapidly increases. The most effective way I’ve found is simply word of mouth and referrals. We’ve had our business for over six years and this has been the most effective way. Loyal customers bring in more customers by the way you treat them, the quality of the items you have and the timely matter of the service you provide.
Get a product and or service that’s high in demand. If you create your own web site, make sure it’s professional looking and not cheesy like a lot of web sites look out there. I’m not a web master, so I had the company do mine for me.
If your interested in this industry and would like to learn more about it, and how to’s and what not, the person you should contact is Tiffany. You can e-mail her at kaiden4@aol.com
She can answer any questions you may have.

Good Luck

Ken asks…

Online design service?

Does anyone know or heard about online design service? If so, where can I find it? Is it expensive? Thanks.

Jere answers:

What kind of online design service are you looking for? If you are looking for design ideas try www.getdecorating.com. If you are looking for a site to make floor plans, try www.plan3D.com.

Are you looking to start your own decorating business or are you looking for an actual designer/decorator to work on your project?

The expense depends on exactly what type of design service you need.

Your Questions About Business Online Payroll

Steven asks…

Does anybody have any ideas for me on starting a fire extinguisher business?

Looking to start a fire extinguisher business and or safety business any tips on starting this and any ideas on area’s of interests

Jere answers:

1

Check with the local building code inspector and fire marshal to get exact requirements for businesses, apartment buildings, and single-family rental properties regarding fire extinguishers. They will be different in various states. This way you will know who is required to have them and you can plan on keeping the largest amount on hand of the most common one.

2

Meet with an accountant to have him set up your bookkeeping system. He will be able to tell you what is tax deductible, how to pay your estimated federal income taxes, how to set up a payroll and how to collect and pay state tax, if any apply. Go over a budget with him so you know what percentage of your capital you should use for each part of the business, such as inventory, office supplies, advertising and utilities.

3

Download a money management program to track expenses and inventory and pay bills. Most programs also have customizable invoices that you can use for your business. Set up the program according to your accountant’s suggestions. Then download a calender for the following year. This way, you can easily determine when the fire extinguishers need to be updated or charged for your customers.

4

Set up a filing cabinet to keep all of your paperwork. You will need a drawer for customers, another for receipts and expenditures, and another for keeping track of utilities and other bills. This will make doing your taxes much easier come tax time. Plus having all your paperwork is advantageous if you should get audited by the IRS.

5

Market yourself by getting business cards out to everyone you know. Leave them in offices where people may wait and post them on bulletin boards wherever you find one. Leave a pile in the local Real Estate offices. Join local groups and organizations like the Kiwanis Club. Advertise in the local paper and on Craigslist.org. Send brochures to apartment building owners and business owners throughout your area. Be creative, like asking the local school if you can come into the classes to show children how to use a fire extinguisher, and then let them take home a packet with your brochure and business card in it.

6

Set up a website and have a designated email address and phone number on it that is just for your business. Try to get an 800 number that is catchy like 1 800 get fire, or see fire. Do the same with the website address. The easier your name is to remember, the more customers you will have. Make sure you get listed in the Yellow Pages, in your phone book, and online too

Ken asks…

What FREE small business accounting program would be best, untill I can afford Quickbooks?

My husband formed a partnership. A subcontracting timber falling business. Until I can afford QuickBooks in a few weeks, what would be the best accounting software that I could download off the net for FREE?? Thanks So much!

Jere answers:

Why don’t you just wait until you can get QuickBooks? Why do you need one right now?

Have you looked into the QuickBooks Simple Start program? If you don’t have inventory or payroll this is the cheaper way to go.

You can download a trial version here http://quickbooks.intuit.com/product/about_quickbooks/trials.jhtml

Or you might consider the online version. You will see it available at the above link also.

If you decide to get QuickBooks in a few weeks you can just wait and enter all the info then.

Good luck!

John asks…

How can I start a restaurant with bad credit?

I have a great idea for a small simple restaurant but I have terrible credit. What are some ways that I can get something going? I’ve been in the restaurant business for years, so I don’t need a lecture about going negative for the first five years and how hard it will be and how I will be broke at the end of it all. As respectfully as I can plead, please answer the question directly and save your warnings about the cruel world of business. Thank you in advance for your time and consideration.

Jere answers:

You need a detailed financial plan
write down what everything costs. Everything.
Write down what your dinners will cost
You need an accountant to finalize it after you give him a very detailed an accurate statement.
You will not get any serious help unless you have a real financial plan, period.
For
your bank
landlord
financing for equipment
etc…

Unless you have the cash up front, or a family or friend will back you.
You have an uphill battle.
The landlord, to start with, wont want to rent to someone with bad credit.
Your score needs to be at least 750 and above.
And your report should be clean even with a high credit rating.
Even if you have good references.
The fact that the bad credit will show the landlord you have a history that you don’t pay your bills, Hence, you wont pay the monthly rent. But you can still try.
You need a place to start your business.

If you own a home with equity in it, you can either refinance and get the equity out, or get a line of credit, or second mortgage. But it is unlikely with bad credit.

They do not have grants for small businesses
They DO however have small business loans you can apply for, ( this is a great way to go!!!)
Go online for Small Business Loan, government. For info Google it.
Make sure you get the REAL gov. Site.

And again to get the government to help you, which they would love to because right now they want as many small businesses out there to hire all those unemployed people, you again need to show through your history you are reliable to pay it back.

Also, 90 percent of all businesses fail the ** first year because they don’t have enough money to support the business for the first year. ( until the business starts to make money)
Meaning on top of rent, 2 months security rent, money for supplies, equipment, contractors, ( Plumbing, electricians whatever you need for start up)

You need money secured in the bank for ** Future – rent, payroll, electric, water, supplies, loans etc…

One of the things I learned when starting my business was…
NOT ONE person I knew thought I could do it. I was 27.
But I KNEW I could do it.
I worked my ass off and did it. And surprised everyone.
I didn’t let anything or anyone take me down.

You may have to wait, but do not ever think you cant do it.
Stick to your dream.

Good Luck

Ps
I hope I didn’t lecture you. Because I wasn’t trying to.
I just know what is like to have haters.
I just wanted to tell some things you may not have thought about.

Linda asks…

What is the best business/payroll software?

I’ve been doing a little research and I just want to know opinions on what works the best to manage money and bills for a small business – also payroll for up to 5 employees.

Jere answers:

I agree with anyone who mentioned QuickBooks as an accounting solution. I may be a little biased since I used to work at Intuit, makers of QuickBooks, but I believe it is the gold standard for small business accounting solutions. They have taken complex accounting terms like “debit and credit” out and replaced them with simple to understand terms like “pay my bills.”

On the other hand I would strongly encourage you to use caution in selecting Intuit as a payroll provider. They’ll try to dazzle you with their “seemless integration” between QuickBooks and their payroll service, but what they won’t tell you is that it’s very fragile and error prone. Not to mention you still do most of the work – enter employees, enter hours/salary, print paychecks, print reports, make payroll deposits, file tax returns, etc. It’s a far cry from a fully outsourced payroll service. Intuit also has a fully outsourced payroll service, but they recently announced they are selling it to ADP, so again use caution before selecting Intuit.

My favorite choice for fully outsourced payroll (where you call it in and checks arrive the next day) would be Paychex and for online payroll (where you generally have to enter payroll info and print the checks but the service handles everything else) is either Sure Payroll or Pay Cycle.

P.S. I don’t work for any of these companies, but I do run the site mentioned below.

Mary asks…

What is online processing and processing?

I am a BCA (Bachelor of computer application)student please give a answer with examples.
What is online processing and processing?

Jere answers:

Batch processing is used when there is a lot of transactions affecting a high percentage of master file records and the the response needed is not immediate, usually until the end of the week or month. A good example of this in a large, national business, would be payroll processing, where nearly every master file record will be affected. The data is collected over a period of time, then input and verified by clerks (verified means input by someone else and then both inputs are compared by computer) and processed centrally.

The transactions are entered in batches by keyboard and stored in transaction files. These batches consist of thirty or so records which are given a batch control ID. The batches are then run through a validation process and to make sure the batches balance a computed total is compared with a manually produced total. This helps to ensure that all data is entered without error or omission. The actual updating of master files only takes place after verification and validation are complete. This means batch processing is often run overnight, unattended. A new master file is produced as a result of a batch processing run. The original master file is kept along with a previous version.

After processing the output is produced, and is usually printed media such as payslips or invoices, although this is changing with the advent of the web.

There is really no such thing as real-time. The best you will get is a few milliseconds from input to response. However such fast systems are used in critical systems that control aircraft or the manufacture of sensitive or dangerous compounds.

Online processing means users directly enter information online (usually, online, in this case, means online to a central processor, rather than its modern connotation of the Internet, but it could mean both!), it is validated and updated directly onto the master file. No new file is created in this case. Therefore, there is near immediate input process, and output. Imagine a cash dispenser transaction or booking a holiday at a travel agents or over the Internet. Compared with batch processing the number of transactions will be few.

Online comes in many different flavours such as centralised, distributed, time-share etc and the choice of architecture will depend on cost, speed needed, number of users, number of transactions and time needed for a response.

Your Questions About Internet Marketing Association

Robert asks…

What North American city currently without a major league team will be the next to have such a team?

For purposes of this question, major leagues consist of Major League Baseball, National Football League, National Basketball Association, National Hockey League, and Major League Soccer. Also for purposes of this question, cities in a metropolitan area with a major league team do not count as they essentually have one already.

I know that this is generally speculation, but I am interested in is hearing opinions on what city or cities you would pick and why. Thanks in advance.

Jere answers:

Las Vegas

There has always been a line between sports and gambling, but with the advent of the Internet, and Indian casinos, it is starting to break down. The argument that a city where gambling is legal could corrupt a professional sports team no longer is a strong, since you can place a sports bet from almost anywhere now. In fact, I think the NBA is planning to hold an All Star game in Vegas. It’s the largest television market without a professional sports team, which means there is a lot of money to be made there. It will have a team within 10 years, possibly 5.

Michael asks…

What is a good home based business for a disabled person with speech problem to get into?

I am looking for something that I can do over the Internet, part or full time and something that I can do by myself. I have about 75% use of my right hand……..

Jere answers:

Kish,
There’s a troll that is bashing Network Marketing/MLM right now.

I work with a woman who is severely disabled because of Multiple Sclerosis for 25 years of her life. She lies on her matress in her bedroom at home.

I work with her every day with our Network Marketing business over the phone and she is very thankful for it. I am very thankful I know Donna as well.

Thank God for Network Marketing.

Let me list criteria to look for before joining a friend or family member or a stranger who is offering a Network Marketing opportunity.

Criteria used to evaluate the various companies are:

Is the company stable?

To determine whether or not a company was stable, I looked at the following:

Has the company been in business for at least 5 years?
Where does the company do business?
Does the company have a good reputation? (Check with the B.B.B.)
Is the company a member of the Direct Sellers Association?
Is the company publicly traded?
Does the company do at least 100 million in annual sales?
In my research, I discovered that the vast majority of home-based businesses are bankrupt within five years.

Generally speaking, the more countries a company does business in, the more stable they will be. It is a good indication if the company operates in the United States, Canada and at least one other country.

I also found that reputable companies were members of the DSA (Direct Sellers Association). Members of the DSA are held to strict ethical guidelines that would protect me and the consumer.

If a company is publicly traded, they are required by law to disclose all financial statements to the public. This information can be obtained by visiting the S.E.C.

Is the product unique?

Having a unique product or service was important to me because if the product was not unique, I would be forced to compete against other companies on price and convenience. By having a unique product, my customers would have no alternative other than to buy from me.

Is the product consumable?

This was my next question. Even if the product I am selling is unique but is not consumable, I would constantly have to find new customers. In other words, I would be unemployed until my next sale. With a consumable product, customers would continue to buy my products and I would continue to earn a residual income without having to find new customers.

Is there a demand for the product?

Having a unique and consumable product wouldn’t mean a thing if there wasn’t a demand for it. This is why I looked for a company that had a product that would be in high demand. In looking at market trends, I discovered that the 1 BILLION “Baby Boomers” are creating the largest trends in the world. As a result, I wanted to find a company that was marketing products that would appeal to this group of people.

Is there product validation?

I did not want to risk my reputation by selling a product that amounted to little more than “snake oil”, so it was important for me to know that the product was scientifically validated before I could feel comfortable selling or recommending it.

Are you ready?

If you would like me to help you to find the right home-based business, I would be glad to assist you.

Richard asks…

Where is the best place to skydive in Kansas?

Looking at the internet search results, one would think that there are 10 to 20 skydiving centers in Kansas. How many real DZs are there, and which is the best?

Jere answers:

There are three skydiving schools in Kansas, Air Capital Drop Zone, Skydive Kansas, and Skydive K-State. What you see in a search are these three, and a bunch of “virtual DZs”. These web site only DZs are really just a boiler room operation in Atlanta which spams the internet with in excess of 1000 dummy web sites. Their ploy is to trick you into calling them, then selling you a gift certificate for well in excess of what you would pay if you called any drop zone directly. You generally will not know that you can not use this gift certificate within the state of Kansas, closest business who will take these overpriced certificates is in Missouri.

As for which DZ in Kansas is best, all three are good safety conscious businesses with well trained instructors. I just happen to own Air Capital Drop Zone, located 10 miles SE of Wichita. We will actually refer people to one of the other two DZs when they call if we learn that they would have to drive by one of them to get to Wichita. That attitude of cooperation, and customer first is typical of all three of us, and Kansas in general.
Martin
Air Capital Drop Zone

Consumers Beware of a National Gift Certificate SCAM!

In the recent months many websites have popped up offering skydiving gift certificates and attempting to book reservations for skydiving.

They appear to be representing a skydiving center in your local area and make claims that they have the highest skydiving safety record, use the best equipment, have been serving the local area for a long time, offer the least expensive skydive, and have the closest jumping location to metropolitan areas.

However, these websites are actually nothing more than a middle man or skydiving reservation agency which costs you money. Be leary of their many misrepresentations!

To help you determine if a website represents an actual skydiving center:

*

Does the website provide a business address for the drop zone?
*

Does the website include specific information about their jumpmasters or the name of their Chief Instructor?
*

Does the website include specific information about their facilities such as which airport, lounges or type of runways?
*

The only regulatory agency for sport skydiving in the USA is the United States Parachute Association (USPA). The USPA is a membership organization that maintains and regulates a Group Member listing of drop zones which abide by the association’s Basic Safety Regulations.

Still not sure if they are legitimate, call the 800 number and ask where they are located. If they cannot answer immediately without asking where you are calling from, then you have reached the middle man!

You might be asking “why not go through one of these agencies?”
1.

Deceptive business practices: They employ a templated website which offers the same facts and pictures across the country, but claim to represent a local drop zone.
2.

Location and distance: The agent will only book you with a participating skydiving center, sometimes several states away!
3.

Bogus fees: Airport Fee, Homeland Security Fee, Poor Weather / Re-Schedule Fee are all tacked on after you have already paid over the internet and arrive for your appointment. You may initially only pay $165 over the internet. However after you arrive and add up the fees, your bill can quickly exceed $250 for the jump alone. The Homeland Security Fee is especially troublesome, since it preys on our fears of terrorism and your belief that you are contributing to National Security.
4.

Low budget operations: Usually, the skydiving center in the area who is participating with these booking agencies is so small and low budget that they are unable to market for themselves. And if they can’t afford marketing, how can they afford good instructors, quality gear, or have properly maintained aircraft?

Making a skydive is an experience you will remember and cherish for life. It is important that this experience be performed by a competent, professional center associated with the United States Parachute Association. Choosing to make a reservation with an agency which makes claims of, but has no control over, safety, instructors and equipment quality is literally throwing caution to the wind. Do your research before you jump. Your safety and enjoyment depend on it.

Any good places to advertise my home based business online?

I am looking for places to advertise online for free or inexpensive. Any ideas would be much appreciated. Thanks!

🙂
I sell personal developement products. Prospective customers will contact me via my web site. I then call them up and try to make a sale.

Jere answers:

There are a lot of free ads web pages, however, after so many days you will have to advance to premium level and that is what costs. Keep seacrhing. There’s a website called promonet.com. It’s new but it is growing. To me the best way to advertise is keep answering questions and post your website. Believe it or not people are curious.

Your Questions About Direct Marketing Solutions

Richard asks…

What is your opinion about laboratory grown meat?

Is it a possible eventual solution to the factory
farm situation? Would you feed your companion
animal cat or dog food made from non-slaughtered
lab-meat. Would you encourage non-vegetarian
people to switch to this type of flesh in an attempt
to end factory farming?
Matt, please educate me on how
you think it may be ethically
problematic. I haven’t heard anything
about that yet.
Reva P. please read the question a little more carefuly. I’m talking about
synthethic flesh that is not an animal.
I’m a vegan and animal rights activist
I would never insult other veg’ans.
Nor would I suggest eating anything
that is really an animal.
Cristy I understand your concern and
I share it. However it leads us to the complex issue of which is the greater
evil. Since only 1% of animal deaths
that occur are due to testing I think it
may be worth the sacrifice in order
to save the multitudes of farm animals
that are slaughtered. I also think that
this testing you are referring to would
be temporary. It becomes a question
of whether a minimal amount of attrition
is worth saving billions of lives.

G.G. I agree. I wouldn’t touch it with a
ten foot pole but just think of a world
in which replicant flesh has made
murder unnecessary.

Jere answers:

As a vegetarian I personally would have nothing to do with it!

Did you know that work is already being done on this kind of thing? I’m not gonna dig up links but I know companies have ramped up the same kind of tissue culturing techniques used for things like burn victim skin grafts! What’s slowed major commercial exploitation is that they can’t get the texture they want.

I actually would consider this a viable method to replace not just factory farms but all direct animal exploitation (with all the cruelty that entails). Yes, when this stuff actually hits the market I would encourage meat eaters to use the stuff instead of ‘natural’ animal flesh. This will be (along with the veggie analogs) the advance that encourages folks to stop killing animals for food! I could see a future where folks would be upset about eating meat from ‘real’ animals. Wasn’t there a Star Trek or such that had someone upset about about eating real dead animal instead of replicated flesh?

That’s the real promise of this kind of technology!

Edit:

The first two answerer’s aren’t considering that with tissue culture you would KNOW that the product didn’t contain excess hormones or contaminants. Would you rather eat a slab of dead cow that could be full of prions, viruses, bacteria, anti-biotics, hormones etc. Or a lab tested and certified beeph steak? Think about it!

Edit:

In my usual style of making a long answer longer…

Quorn is NOT genetically modified! It’s a natural soil fungus that’s grown in a manner similar to yeast. I’m not a big fan of Quorn but that bit of mis-information needs correcting.

No animals need be killed for this stuff at all! It just takes ONE small tissue sample to start a culture with. When that tissue culture is large enough you divide it to start many new cultures. Think of something like a sourdough starter where a small piece is always saved to make the next batch of sourdough. A plant based analogy would be Geraniums. They don’t normally set viable seed so every single plant you see for sale was actually started from a tissue culture!! The ‘quicker’ readers will realize we’re talking *real* cloning here. I’m glad Toph caught the potential environmental benefits of the stuff! I hoped someone would. Beebs might be interested to know that cow mammary glands have gotten this treatment and so have fish. You still wouldn’t be a vegetarian but you could have your raw cow milk and fish without harming animals. Here’s a *real* eye-opener, human mammary glands could get this treatment to produce MASS quantities of human milk! All it takes is one healthy female volunteer willing to get jabbed with a biopsy needle. Interesting concept huh? No more babies getting fed cow milk or formula! Sorry perverts, no giant breasts involved here, just a thin layer of gland tissue grown on a substrate that constantly expresses milk.

All this (and more) is *possible* right now. For us veggies I’ve seen tissue cultures of lettuce and bell pepper. That’ll hush some meaty trolls that scream about us killing plants!
What’s stopping troubleshooting and more development is money; not just money to ramp up production but also money interests freaking about their own pocketbooks. The meat/dairy industry is (rightly) worried about the potential as is anyone involved in agriculture. There were some folks that ‘pooped’ themselves when they found out some of this stuff has already been eaten by humans (lab researchers).
I’ve been following this “sci-fi” technology for years since (as some know) I’m opposed to *all* killing and this is a step in the right direction. What I *really* want is the ability to convert raw energy directly into food! (one of the ramifications of E=Mc squared)

Maria asks…

what is the process of leather belt manufacturing?

I want to know about process of leather belt( clothing) manufacturing beginning from tanning of leather to the marketing. If anyone know any topic covering this , please let me know about that.

Jere answers:

I ll help u to know the process of Leather Manufacturing, a part of ur question….
In order to obtain diversified end products from a simple animal skin, rawhide is subjected to 13 major processes in our factory. Depending on customers’ requirements, these processes are even further subdivided into numerous stages.

1)Soaking

As the initial process of leather manufacturing, salted rawhide from North America is rinsed with water to remove salt and dirt and also to replace moisture lost in the curing process to soften the hide tissue.
(Required time: 1 day)

2)Dividing

The hide is then cut down the length of the backbone into two sides to improve the working efficiency of the subsequent processing.
(Required time: half a day)

3)Unhairing and Liming

Next, the hide is immersed in the lime solution to easily remove hair and to resolve unwanted fat and furthermore to open-up the collagen fiber. Liming promotes the penetration of chemical agents into the hide tissue. Drum liming and paddle liming are usualbut Tochigi Leather employs pit liming.
(Required time: 5 to 6 days)

4)Fleshing

This is an operation to remove fat from the flesh side of the hide using a fleshing machine.
(Required time: 1 day)

5)Deliming and Bating

Deliming neutralizes the hide and bating gives it a smoother grain to facilitate subsequent tanning process.
(Required time: 1 day)

6)Pit tanning

Dipped in a pit filled with vegetable tannin solution for about three weeks, the hide is tanned to become ?“leather”? Which is immune to decay.
(Required time: 20 to 30 days)

7)Fatliquoring

After the tanning, excess moisture is squeezed out of the leather. Then natural based grease is applied onto the leather in a drum to add flexibility and durability.
(Required time: half a day)

8)Setting Out

The leather is smoothened, first, by a setting machine then carefully by hand.
(Required time: 1 day)

9)Drying

The leather is dried in a well-ventilated indoors, avoiding direct sunlight to become case leather.
(Required time: 10 to 15 days)

10)Splitting

Splitting adjusts the thickness of the case leather depending on the use for bags, belts, etc.
(Required time: 1 day)

11)Dyeing, Retanning, and Fatliquoring

Then dyeing, retanning and fatliquoring follow to add color and texture to the leather using optimum dyestuff and chemical agents according to each end product.
(Required time: 1 day)

12)Setting Out and Drying

The leather is set out and dried once again to smooth its grain. This process also requires the sensitive selection of method with respect to the end products.
(Required time: 5 to 10 days)

13)Finishing

Finally the leather surface is treated with pigments and top coats to condition its softness, color, gloss, and touch; a process which calls for personal sensitivity and good taste with creative capabilities. This process may also include ironing to further adjust its softness and gloss, or embossing to impress a design to give character to the end products.
(Required time: 10 to 15 days)
From this Leather, the Belts r made and sold in Markets….

Jenny asks…

Who else thinks that the takeover of HBOS smells a bit fishy ?

Lloyds are no white knight solution – why should they get the group without any other institutions getting a look in ? This is a stitch up.

Jere answers:

It stinks higher than month old fish market rejects.

The only reason HBoS was available at that price was because of the glut of shares dumped on the stockmarket by twitchy brokers who then proceeded to sell them for less than they were worth resulting in the share price (which was on a steady downward trend and had been for a year) dropping like a stone over less than two days. This effectively devalued the company and made it unstable. LloydsTSB have just picked up what will in the future be considered an utter bargain.

As I pointed out in a question a couple of days ago, HBoS is a behemoth compared to LloydsTSB. Under normal circumstances, Llyods would have been more likely to be an aquisition of HBoS, not the other way around. Although a takeover of that scale in normal conditions would have been blocked under monopolies rules which have been suspended under national security rules, mainly because the collapse of HBoS would have wrecked the country’s economy.

I find the whole thing dubious in the extreme. The only reason it was not a direct government bail out was because they had thrown billions at Northern Rock and didn’t have the money available to do it again when a real banking giant needed help.
Given that they were in that position, the government has done what was probably the only thing available to do and that was to broker a deal with another bank.

I can only hope our other national bank has not similarly compromised it’s own position.

Just a though. Now that Bank of Scotland is no longer exactly a Scottish bank, what happens to their right to print banknotes? Although it should be said that, as LlyodsTSB were formed when TSB took over as senior partner with Llyods, their registered office is actually in Edinburgh and not London, as everyone seems to assume.

Mark asks…

What does this bail out means for student loans?

I’m a high school senior and will need loans to go to college. What does the recent economic news mean for the student loan market?

Jere answers:

Actually, this particular bail out means nothing to the educational loan niche of the lending market – there will be pressure now, from some quarters, for the fed to take more aggressive action in the student lending domain.

What’s more important is the legislation that Congress rushed into law in May of this year – now that was an educational lending bail out, that mostly went unnoticed at the time.

Under the May legislation, which has already taken effect, the Education Department is now eligible to buy a large percentage of student loans from the lenders. As the system has traditionally worked, the lenders make the loans, but then turn them around, package them up into securities, and sell them to investors – which, in turn, generates new money for the banks to make more students loans with.

As you probably know if you’ve been keeping track of the news, those kinds of asset based securities have fallen out of favor with investors, who have seen way too many packages of similar mortgage-based loans go bad, so the educational lenders were getting stuck with loans they never had any intention of carrying on their books. That’s why so many lenders abandoned the student loan market – there was no one to sell their loans to.

With the Department of Education now able to buy large quantities of these loans, the mass exodus from the educational lending market has slowed. Of course, CampusDoor was a Lehman Brothers company, so there goes another lender…

By the way, the same May law also authorizes the Department of Education to make more direct loans – but they remain a lender of “last resort”.

Either way – the May legislation was a necessary move to resuscitate the student loan business, and so far, at least, things seem to be holding together. Today’s news should not have much of a direct effect on the educational lending market.

Trust me on this – the government needs to find a way to keep the money flowing so that our young people can afford to obtain an education – whatever the eventual terms of the solution, there will be money available for you when it’s time to attend college.

I hope that helped – good luck to you!

Your Questions About Business Online Degree Programs

Ruth asks…

thoughts on asford university good place to go do an online physiology degree or not thoughts?

I am looking at online program at Ashford university. I have herd mixed things about going there. I like they way it sounds but do they do what they say. do you know of any good sites to look at university reviews.

Jere answers:

See college reviews at RipOffReport.com. Employers often automatically reject job applicants listing any for-profit school or any online degree. Ashford is a commercially operated business, thus it’s considered less credible. I’ve even heard some recruiters call it “trashford”. It should also be noted that a degree in physiology should require lab work that must be done in person, not on the internet.
As a general guideline you should also avoid any online degree programs. Here’s why….. There have been widespread reports of students cheating in online programs by hiring an impostor to take the courses. As a result ANY online degree is considered somewhat bogus, even if from a legit school. Obviously it is far easier for a student to cheat in an online program versus a monitored classroom. It has been said that the “distance learning” student only learns to be distant from any decent learning!
A far better solution would be to attend college in person. No online program can be as good as the learning experience and personal interaction of the classroom. Attend college in person-You’ll be glad you did!

Maria asks…

how i find students wishing to learn economics business studies online?

Carol asks…

What can I do with a bachelors degree in business administration?

I currently work as an architectural drafter with an associates degree in drafting and design. I am interested in a bachelors in business online. Is this a good way to go if I want to get into construction management? Would an empoyer value a business degree for construction management since I have related experience?

Jere answers:

Yes, a bachelor’s degree will be an asset to you and a future employer. However, don’t get it from a strictly online school though. These will be for-profit schools and they usually overcharge. It is better if you can get your degree from a state school. The degree you earn from a state school will be no different than a degree earned by an on-campus student.
Here are some schools for you that have online programs. Most of the following are state schools.

When you choose a school, make sure it is at least regionally accredited. You can check accreditation at http://ope.ed.gov/accreditation/search.asp You can learn more about accreditation at http://www.ed.gov/admins/finaid/accred/index.html

There are a couple of forums online with members who have obtained their degrees online. Some have gone pretty far with their online degrees. The forums are free to join but you can read the forum without joining. You just won’t be able to post. Http://forums.degreeinfo.com and http://www.instantcertonline.com/forums

Good luck,

Mark asks…

Where is the best place to get a degree online that businesses will accept as a degree?

I’m a working mother and I can’t quit my job to go to college but I want to further my education so I can get a better paying job. I need to know where the best place is to get an online degree that businesses will accept as a degree. PLEASE HELP.

Jere answers:

Congratulations on thinking about furthering your education, you won’t regret it.

The state universities and community colleges will be the best and least expensive way to further your education online. Usually degrees obtained online from state universities and colleges will be no different than a degree granted to a student sitting in class.

Stay away from the for-profits because of high cost. Some will be reasonable, but most, like University of Phoenix, overcharge.

If you are just starting your college education or have less than 60 semester credit hours, try your local community college first. They may have an online AA degree program. If they don’t, try other community colleges in your state.

Once you have an AA degree, you can enroll in an online bachelor’s degree completion program at one of the state universities. Many state universities now have online degrees. The following are some websites to get you started.

http://www.peru.edu/offuttafb/degreeprograms/onlinelearning.htm
http://outreach.uwyo.edu/ocp/
http://www.distance.msstate.edu/
http://www.distancelearning.ufl.edu/degrees.aspx
http://www.apu.apus.edu/index.htm
http://www.online.uillinois.edu/
http://www.depts.ttu.edu/ode/CollegeOverview.asp

Finally, when you choose a school, make sure it is at least regionally accredited. You can check accreditation at http://ope.ed.gov/accreditation/Search.asp

Good luck

Donna asks…

Getting a Business Bachelors that is NOT AACSB accredited?

I just completed my associates, and was already accepted to 1/3 schools I applied to (waiting on the other two). It is an online program, at Troy University (AL). The online business degree here is pretty well reviewed by students, but I just found out it is not AACSB accredited. I know it might hurt my chances of getting a job…but how badly? Could I apply for an MBA in the future at a school that IS AACSB accredited and be accepted?

Any advice would help, thank you!

Jere answers:

Although Troy is not AACSB accredited, it is an AACSB member. It could be working toward accreditation. I doubt you would have a problem getting into an MBA program after earning a degree from Troy. However, MBA programs accept students with a bachelor’s degree in any undergraduate field. They prefer students who do not have a business major because they give you the business training but they cannot provide the broad background that managers should have. The best majors are in the sciences, engineering, or math, but other majors are also suitable. Any field of endeavor can use good management. The reason for avoiding a business undergraduate degree is that it results in too much duplication with the MBA and leaves you with a narrow focus. On the other hand, companies hiring MBA graduates are looking for those who earned the MBA but can also communicate with the people that they have to manage as they advance in their jobs.

MBA programs prefer students with 2-4 years work experience after the first degree. Some accept students right out of college if they have good grades and a high GMAT score. Some MBA programs are designed specifically for new college graduates without work experience. But in those programs you don’t get the benefit of learning from other students who have work experience. A lot of valuable learning takes place through class interaction. Also when you graduate your job offers will be about the same as a business undergraduate gets because you have no work experience, and you’ve been two years out of your undergraduate field so it’s hard to get work in that area.

Sandra asks…

What do I need to start an online dating service business?

I don’t have a website , yet, where do I build a free website? where do I go from there?
Thanks!

Jere answers:

You can’t have a free webside for an online dating service business.

First of all, like any business, you need to make your 5-year business plan. Look for the SBA (Small Business Administration) in the federal part of your white pages in your phone book, call them and take a short few hour course to learn how to start a business. Your 5-year business plan would probably take you 3 months to prepare it.

I would suggest you first go thru the process of someone else’s dating service before you do it yourself so you can see how it’s run. Then you’d need to figure out from your 5-year business plan how much money you’d need and then get a business loan. From that you can hire someone to put together your extensive website. Then you will have to start advertising (and need money for that as well). You’d have to remember that you can’t spend the money that people give you for 3-6 months because there might be chargebacks, bad credit cards, people doing fraud, etc. If you spend that money you will go under quickly. But basically you’d be in business not only to make money but to make matches. And you will have to have standards, policies, an attorney who will write those for you, and an accountant.

Daniel asks…

How can you start an online business like this?

I was talking with a friend the other night and he mention to me that I should start my own business online.I have been through a couple private detective courses and have this great ability to find missing people like long lost loved ones.I helped my friend find his own father and have found friend’s missing relatives and absent fathers and mothers.I would like to start a business online where I offer to find peoples long lost loved ones.I realize there are sites online that let people do this but most of the time people won’t pay the 30 dollars or more to do so or are simply too lazy to look.I would like to start a website to help people find their lost loved ones for a small small fee,as I already have the software and knowledge to search. How can I start a site like this?

Jere answers:

Like any other online business, these are the general steps that you need to take :

1. Plan your website
Since you offer a service for locating people, fill you website with content about topics related to this. For example,
– why people need to locate relatives, long lost friends (for medical reasons etc)
– interesting cases in the news
– personal testimonials

2. Think about your webhosting options.

You basically have 2 options :
– Free webhosting / blog. These are free but come with limitations. Just Google “Free Web Host” or “Free blogs” to find one that suits your needs.
– Paid webhosting. If you’re serious about this business, then paid hosting should be your choice. When you consider the possible long term returns of your business, paid web is the way to go.

3. Find a domain name

You can find a unique domain name here : http://www.register.com
Your domain name should preferable contain keywords that are used to look for people for example : www.findpeople.com or www.locatefriends.com. Whether you’ve decided on free or paid webhosting, your domain name will play a crucial part in how people find your site.

4. Find a payment processor

Decide how you want to receive payment. There are a number of ways to receive online payments :

– Paypal (http://www.paypal.com)
– Credit cards (http://www.2checkout.com)
– Other online payment systems (eg stormpay, worldpay)

Most will charge you and annual fee for the service. They will teach you how to incorporate the payment links into your website.

5. Set up your website

If you have some website design skills, then you could do this yourself. If not, you can ask a friend or pay someone to do it. It’s always better to keep things simple. Avoid flashy widgets and plugins. They only complicate your website and make it difficult to maintain.

6. Refine your content

The structure of your website is important. You want your content to channel or focus people’s attention on locating someone by using your service. This would most likely be an enquiry form or contact form.

7. Submit your website to search engines.

When you’re site is ready, submit them to Google, Yahoo!, Ask, MSN and any other major search engine you can find. It’s best to avoid using third party submission services for this because this is a crucial step in your online business set up. Do this yourself and work through the submission process carefully.

8. Start to build traffic

You won’t immediately rank high in the search results. So what you want to do it start to build traffic. There are limitless ways to build traffic to your site :

– advertise online (eg. Google Adwords, Linkworth, Adbrite etc)
– advertise offline (eg. Newspapers, magazines, business cards, flyers, leaflets, posters etc)
– Social networking sites (eg Friendster, myspace, etc)
– article marketing. Write useful articles about locating people and submit to major article marketing sites :

http://www.ezinearticles.com
http://www.goarticles.com

– Participate in online forums that discuss topics related to your business. Leave comments and your URL. Remember to comment only if you have something positive or constructive to contribute to the discussiion.

Rinse and repeat steps 6 and 8.

Some final words :

– Building and online business is never really a plug and play thing like most people want you to believe. It’s going to take time, a lot of learning, persistence and hard work.

– Learn SEO and online marketing techniques. Sad to say that most online businesses are run on a one-man-operation concept. Unless you can pay someone to do Search Engine Optimization and marketing for you, they job lies with you.

– DON’T use black hat techniques. Black hat techniques include keyword stuffing, invisible keywords, email spamming etc. You’ve worked hard to build your online business. Don’t kill it overnight with these techniques.

Hope that helps.

Andrew

Jenny asks…

the advantages to businesses selling and providing services online?

Jere answers:

I believe that it is fundamental that businesses sell online or provide services online. If you are not online, others similar to your business will be online, generating sales or providing services. You would be missing out on a potentially very large market.
If say you were a local Business looking to generate leads. You have no online presence. You use the traditional offline techniques. You will generate leads, but not as many as you could do being online. However, many people search the Web for their enquiries these days and the list is increasing every second. Around the corner a similar Business has a good local ranking online. They will receive the enquiries from a Web Site that may have been set up a year ago with little maintenance required, generating leads or sales.
The advantage is more sales, more profit, providing you create quality content to your customers.

Your Questions About Internet Business Ideas

Helen asks…

how can i protect my business idea ?

if i had a new internet business idea , is there any way to protect it ? in another word , can i prevent anyone from stealing my idea , im going to launch my website very soon but im affraid of competetors. how can i register my idea ? and if its possible , for how long could it be hold to me before a competotor steps in ?

Jere answers:

From what I understand the only thing you can protect is the company name, company logos or the company product if manufactured by yourself, or if your selling more of an information product or something similar you would of had to be the one to come up with it. In general if its is not your product then no there is no way to protect it. There is not many things out there that have not been covered already on the interenet.

Lisa asks…

Does any entrepreneur have any really good business ideas?

Does any entrepreneur have any really good business ideas because i want to become a business man. I have read books like Peter Jones but not really a help, please help if you have the mind of a tycoon!

Jere answers:

One of the best types of businesses to do is a home based business. You have the same income opportunity as a traditional business without all the over head expenses. Just about everything that you use in your home on a daily bases becomes a tax write off. Things such as your telephone, cell phone, Internet, electricity, gas and even down to car expenses. Huge income opportunity with less expendures which basically mean more profit!
Look into the telecommunications industry, travel, or anything that is in high demand and will always be used everywhere.
I provided my source below with over half a dozen different industries to take a look at.

George asks…

I want to start an internet on line business?

I want to spend up to 2000 dollars on an on line internet business. I know how to do things like set up a WordPress site and buying domain names, I’m willing to work hard, and I’m not expecting to earn too much money – just a regular income of 1000 dollars a month would suffice. All I need is an idea from someone who knows what he/she is talking about.

Thanks

Jere answers:

That said, how does one go about starting a business online?
There are five general types of internet businesses that you can start.
A portal site or a portal that sells digital products.
A content web site that is monetized with advertising.
An e-commerce business that sells a digital product.
An e-commerce business that ships tangibles to people.

Ken asks…

How many businesses can you run under a company?

I have a number of business ideas going in a few different directions but all of them will be internet businesses. If I self-corporate, can I have start these businesses under just one company?

Alsod, is it legal to retain profits for a company for a number of years. If it is, are there any requirements to justify it or otherwise?

Thanks for your comments!

Jere answers:

The laws vary with the state, in my state of North Carolina, you may specify the type of business in your Articles of Incorporation as “Any Lawful Business”, and therefore not be limited. You will however have to make all other requirements. So you can do many different “Business types” businesses under one corporation. But you should go to the web site for the Secretary of State in your state, and see what the laws of your state require.

As for retaining profits, that is a tax issue, and it depends on may IRS considerations that you need to speak with a tax expert. I incorporated and requested S-Corp status from the IRS, for no federal income tax, but what you do and how you make money and how much profit you may retain for corporate growth may affect that. Again, talk to a tax expert.

You mentioned self-incorporate. I think you should not be using that concept. When you incorporate, you are creating a business entity that is separate from yourself. You are not self-incorporating, you are creating a corporation under the laws of the state. You need to keep the corporation separate from your personal finances.

Susan asks…

How does one go about getting on the blasted internet?

I’ve heard a lot about this internet business but I’ve no idea what to do.
Should I buy one of those computer things that everybody talks about these days?
As a child I had one of those ghastly Sinclair Spectrums that the riff raff used to have. Mummy still has it in the basement. Should I get it out and try to get on the internet with it? Will it be easy to set up?

Thank you ever so much for your advice.

Your Questions About Doing Business Online Government

Richard asks…

Do i need a business license to sell homemade crafts online?

If I make tutu’s or other crafts and sell them online or at a consignment shop do I need a business license or permit?

Jere answers:

That depends on how far the government goes in trying to collect sales taxes!!

I would get an etsy account for handmade items. Not expensive for an etsy shop. Http://www.etsy.com and etsy is only for us handmade wizards to sell our labors of love.

At a consignment shop, you generally don’t need any business license or much more than a tax number that you can pay your taxes through, both state and federal.

Mandy asks…

How do I find a grant for an individual?

I am a recently divorced single Mom in my late 30’s and am returning to college to obtain a quality education and raise my daughter better. Does anyone know of any foundations or organizations that donate funds to individuals whom are in my current situation? I will need approximately $50,000 to pay for my school expenses, rent, groceries, gas, phone, and life’s incidentals. I am desperate for help, as I feel God is leading me in this direction, and I must answer His call.
Thank you all so much, Sherry

Jere answers:

Both government and private foundation grants do not give away free money for the sake of giving away money. There are no grants for paying bills, no grants for paying off credit cards, no grants for getting out of debt and no grants for simply fattening your wallet.

Grants are free, but it means OBLIGATION. You will be obligated to do as the grant sets out to do. Grants have objectives, and your purpose must fit the objective of the grant.

For one, you have to write the grant application and the grant application is not a simple document – you have to explain how your purpose for applying for the grant fits well with the objectives set out by the grant.

There is a stringent review process through a committee. You will compete with other applicants for the grant money, and this grant review committee will evaluate the merits of each proposal. Only those that they feel exemplifies the objective of the grant will be approved.

You can go to the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) http://www.cfda.gov and Grants.gov http://www.grants.gov – these are two sites created by the federal government to provide transparency and information on grants. Browse through the listings and see if you can find any grant that would support your purposes.

Even if you buy books on “how to get grants” or list that supposedly has information on grants — all of them are mere rehash of what CFDA has, albeit packaged differently.

Note though that these grants generally support non-profit organizations, intermediary lending institutions, and state and local governments — very rarely for individuals. Most of the federal grants are given to specific target groups with specific requirements (e.g. Minority business owners involved in transportation related contracts emanating from DOT – Grant#20.905 Disadvantaged Business Enterprises Short Term Lending Program. Individuals especially for personal purposes are not eligible for federal grants.

Grants are also often given to non profit groups or organizations involved in training or other similar activities (grant 59.043 Women’s Business Ownership Assistance that are given to those who will create women’s business center that will train women entrepreneurs

For private grants, you may want to check the Foundation Center’s Foundation Grants for Individuals Online http://gtionline.fdncenter.org . It’s a subscription based website ($9.95 per month) but their opening blurb only says that the database is ideal for “students, artists, academic researchers, libraries and financial aid offices.” Entrepreneurs are apparently not one of them, so I take it they also don’t have listings of private foundations who give grants to would-be entrepreneurs.

George asks…

Has the US Mail become so irrelevant to you that you don’t bother checking the mail every day?

It is for me, I check it every 2-3 days. Do all of my business online, don’t even get statements anymore. It’s 90% garbage with the occasional relevant piece.

BQ: Since the USPS isn’t doing anywhere near the volume it used to, why aren’t masses of unionized postal workers getting laid off and dozens upon dozens of facilities being closed? We keep hearing about how the USPS needs to reorganize, yet nothing of substance happens.

Jere answers:

What a wasteful jobs program.

You’d think Environ-Mentals would raise a bigger stink about the complete waste of paper being moved. However, they’re government union loving Dems, so they remain silent.

Jenny asks…

How do I start a sole proprietorship?

I want to start a business selling t-shirts online. I’m located in the state of Minnesota. What steps must I take before I sell product online (dba, EIN #, etc).

*I do not plan to hire any employees at the start.

Jere answers:

If you plan to incorporate then you need to register with the federal, state and city government. If you plan to run the business as a sole proprietor then all you need is a business license from your local city government and possibly a sales and use tax account with the Dept of Revenue in your state if you add tax to your product.

Steps for getting started:
First and foremost write up a business plan.
1. Forming the business either through incorporating or as a sole proprietor. If you plan to incorporate then you need to get with your states Secretary of State to do this. Get with your local city government to get a business license as a sole proprietor and use your SSN as your tax ID#.
2. Find your SIC and NAICS code you will need either one or both for your business formation with the government entities.
3. Getting an EIN if required
4. Setting up a Franchise and Excise Tax and Sales and Use Tax account with the Dept of Revenue in the state you are in. You need to determine if you need one or both of these accounts. Just call the Dept of Revenue in your state and they are usually pretty helpful in answering all your questions.
5. Set up a business bank account or bank account with a DBA attached to it.
6. Set up a merchant and or paypal account.
7. Build a website and get a domain name and hosting.
8. Get inventory.
9. Figure out how you plan to ship product. This all comes down to how you plan to handle inventory. Some people have their own and some get involved with companies that have the product and you sell it and they drop ship the product for you. This saves on you having to carry the product yourself and having unsold inventory in your possession.
10. Marketing your website. Just because you publish a website doesn’t mean it’s visible to the search engines and the public at large so you need to submit the site to the 3 top search engines at the least and start marketing the site.

This is a basic order and some of these may overlap each other during the process but I hope this helps out. I’ve been through the routine and had to figure it all out myself. Just ask a lot of questions with the people you are dealing with to get things in order.

Good Luck

Daniel asks…

How do you apply for a scholarship to a university?

I understand that some have specific criteria, but do you mail them the prerequisites, or do you get an interview?

Jere answers:

If you are still a high school student, once school resumes after the Summer break, meet with a HS counselor & ask about scholarships & how to apply. There may be some offered by local organizations just for students graduating from your HS. Also learn the ins & outs of all kinds of college/university financial aid. Learn about the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid – http://www.fafsa.ed.gov ) which you will need to complete & submit to be considered for any US government student aid.

Also, learn about how to choose schools that will meet your academic & career goals and fit your budget.

Once you have a list of colleges/universities* that interest you, those schools may have scholarship/grant funds for just their own students. Staff members of the colleges/universities may need the info from your completed FAFSA or may need a completed CSS Profile (from the College Board – https://profileonline.collegeboard.com/prf/index.jsp ) to determine if you will be awarded any scholarships/grants. Look for info about them on the school’s Financial Aid web pages.

*By colleges/universities I mean: local taxing district funded community colleges, state government funded colleges & universities, & private/independent non-profit colleges/universities (not to be confused with for-profit/career/proprietary colleges, which 1st & foremost are businesses with the main focus of earning profits for their shareholders.)

Online databases I recommend for searching for scholarships for which you may qualify & want to apply:

Scholarship Search from the well-respected College Board:
* https://bigfuture.collegeboard.org/scholarship-search
Click on the Start button.
If you choose to register (free – registration is not required) to return later & modify your search strategy, feel secure you will not receive spam emails. Don’t select too many defining terms in your search strategy, which may result in a poor scholarship search result.

CollegeNet Mach25 Scholarship Search database:
* http://www.collegenet.com/mach25/app
No registration required. If you use the Profile Search option, don’t include a large number of Misc. Identifiers or you may have an unsuccessful search result. The Keyword Search is the easiest. Scholarships specific to particular colleges/universities are included in the Mach25 database.

MyCollegeOptions.org Scholarship Search
* https://www.mycollegeoptions.org/scholarship-advanced-search.aspx?HighlightMatchPattern=scholarship-search|scholarship-advanced|scholarshipsearch
This web site only requires registration for using the Advanced version for searching for scholarships. It has a very good Privacy Policy, indicating that registrant information will be kept private. Scholarships specific to particular colleges/universities will be included in the search results.

With the results of the scholarship search databases you will have to look at each scholarship option in the results & the info on the scholarship granting organization web pages to determine if you qualify to apply.

When you do find a scholarship for which you want to apply, make sure you meet the scholarship requirements, be sure to follow the application rules to the letter; use perfect spelling, grammar & punctuation; & submit your application before the deadline.

Many other students will be applying for the same scholarships & only a few or maybe just 1 will be awarded. Please do not pin all your hopes of higher education financing on being awarded enough scholarship/grant funds to cover all your college expenses.

I hope you have been saving any gift money & earnings – as much as possible for a number of years.

Carol asks…

What Search Engine Optimization strategy would work best for my blog about jokes and funny videos?

I read several web articles on online video marketing. Is it recommended that I avail of Search Engine Optimization services? Because I really want my site to reach a wider audience. I’ve got funny, unique videos uploaded everyday. Which Internet marketing services would best work for my SEO needs?

http://www.cybertegic.com/

Jere answers:

You can take the following approach.
1. Make sure your site is well optimized including title, meta tags, the content and the internal linking between your content is relevant e.g. A page having a joke about animals can also have a section called related jokes and related videos which are linked to with good anchor text containing your target keywords..
2. As jokes and funny videos tend to be shared across various mediums, you can build a good link aquisition strategy by providing updates through email, bookmarking, sharing across social media and promoting through directories, joke sites, feeds, etc. Try and get relevant links to target pages with your target anchor text
3. You can build a network with other jokers 🙂 so you get traffic from them and share their jokes as well, some kind of a platform for collaboration.

Betty asks…

Is it illegal to sell a list of contact information for businesses that I’ve created for my own reference?

I’ve created a list of businesses that I was going to use to market my services. The list includes the names of the businesses, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses and web addresses. I realized that this directory might be very useful to other companies looking to market to similar clients and I’m considering expanding it and selling it. Would selling this list of my own creation violate any Federal or Provincial laws in Canada?

Jere answers:

From what you write, this isn’t confidential information, anybody could get it off the internet so there is no problem in selling it to anyone who would be willing to buy it.

Maria asks…

How much are these companies charging for a daily mass email?

I have a friend that wants me to do mass emails and gave me a price I think, is too small.

Steven asks…

Where can I find the best source to learn e-mail marketing from?

There are thousands and thousands of email marketing eBooks out there. But which one could possibly provide you with the best content?

Jere answers:

Best Practices
Although email and online marketing are still in their infancy, marketers, through trial and error, have developed a significant body of knowledge about it. From that they have distilled the so-called best email practices, which are rules and techniques for achieving the best results and ROI from email campaigns.

There are literally dozens of Email Best Practices, covering most major aspects of email marketing. For example, there are practices to:

•Protect your valuable reputation as a sender (authentication and reputation practices)
•Maximize your delivery success (deliverability practices)
•Build and maintain a successful online relationship with your customers (permission and relevance practices).

Jenny asks…

what are the PLUS POINTS of email marketing?

and i need few reason to present in my presentation that Email Marketing is most powerful and faster than seo because?

Jere answers:

Hi there

SEO is basically a process to bring more visitors to your site via search engines. Email marketing is a way to do so by contacting the prospects directly. That in itself gives you the advantage. The major advantages of email marketing

1. The number of email users is steadily on the increase. Http://www.radicati.com/wp/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/email-stats-report-exec-summary.pdf So emails give you the opportunity to reach a large portion of your audience.

2. It is also looked upon as the most formal and authentic form of business communication despite the fact that social networks and instant messaging are around.

3. You do not thrust the information on a person. You give them the option of subscription/unsubscription. So it is with the recipient’s permission that you are sending them messages. If they are no longer interested they will unsubscribe.

4. Email is one medium that will be here longer. So it is a reliable means of communication

5. SEO is a long term process. You will see results only after a long time. But with email marketing feedback is sooner than that, direct and personal.

6. You need an SEO analyst to do the process. But with just a little practice, you can send out email shots yourself.

These are some plus points I could think of quickly. Will add to this later if required. Cheers!

Your Questions About Business Online Courses

Chris asks…

How well do businesses accept Online educations?

I was looking into taking some online courses. In comparison to traditional college credits how do Online courses and degrees stack up. Also if you know any good online schools please give your recommendations.

Jere answers:

According to the Chronicle of Higher Education, “Employers Often Distrust Online Degrees” an article that notes, “Silvia Guzman, regional human-resources manager for ProTec Building Services, likens online degrees to diploma mills or institutions that advertise on career Web sites promising to help you earn a degree in a year. . .She mentioned several universities that raise red flags for her when she sees them on résumés, including Capella University, an accredited for-profit online institution . . .”

You will find many negative comments and criticisms of Capella University, a for-profit on-line school, on the Capella Facts web site – http://www.capellafacts.org/capella_university_reviews.html

Richard asks…

What option should I take for an online university/college?

I want to receive my bachelor’s in business online. I’ve checked out several online universities and colleges. Some schools tuition includes your books and materials. And some schools offer different prices for different courses i.e., general courses or according to the level of the class. I want to attend a school that includes books and materials in the tuition but, the cost per credit from other schools are lower and I have to buy my books. What should I do? And what are other schools that offer financial aid and books and material are included in the tuition?

Jere answers:

Most schools that include books in the cost of tuition are more expensive (for obvious reasons). I think you will probably save more in the long-run by attending a school with reasonable tuition and buying your books used, or buying the eBook version (which is usually half of the cost of a new book).

I attended Columbia College and majored in Business. Their tuition is $210 per credit hour, which is about what I would be paying at the local college in my area. Books were about $65 per course when I purchased used or eBooks (which was most of the time). So, that is about $275 per course including tuition and books.

I did a review of this school on my blog if you have time to check it out: http://www.online-school-reviews.net/index.php/columbia-college-online-missouri/

Maria asks…

What jobs are available for a person with an associates of arts in business degree?

I just enrolled in online courses for my associates of arts in business, and need to know what my job opportunities will be? I need to know if I can use that degree to enter into RN school. Or if I have to be an LPN first? Please help me!!!

Jere answers:

You will need a Bachelors degree to become a RN. You can have an Associated degree and apply for a four year Bachelors degree as a transfer student.

A good article is blow on how to become an RN./

Laura asks…

What are the disadvantages of taking courses online?

I’m planning to take online courses to earn a bachelor degree since I’m oversees for a family situation. What are the disadvantages I should consider? apart from the fact that It’s nothing like a traditional campus and thus, it can cause an isolation.

Thank you.
After the college, I’m thinking of medical school.
I’m an autodidact 🙂

Jere answers:

Some disadvantages to online classes are:

1. The lack of face-to-face interaction can be difficult if you like personalized attention from your teachers. In addition, an online course does not provide the social aspects of a traditional classroom.

2. There is no set time and place when your class will meet, so you will have to take responsibility for your learning, and be self-disciplined and motivated enough to work on your assignments on your own.

3. If you are a procrastinator or you always need an extra push to complete assignments, you may have difficulty making time for your online classes.

4. You must possess a minimum level of computer knowledge in order to function successfully in an online environment.

5. Online courses will also require you to learn new skills, such as navigating within the features of your course.

6. Because there is no verbal discussion, you must be comfortable with and have time to focus on writing. Most communication is written.

7. Online courses are often MORE work than campus-based courses. (The online classes I took freshman and sophmore year had so much busy work, I only took in class courses the last 2 years of undergrad)

8. You can feel isolated when questions and technical issues come up.

You mentioned you want to go to medical school. If you want to go to medical school, you should be thinking about majoring in biology or a related pre-med field, which will require labs. Labs can not be done online. Trust me, I was a biology major.

Common medical school prerequisistes are:
General Chemistry with lab: 2 semesters
Organic Chemistry with lab: 2 semesters
General Physics with lab: 2 semesters
General Biology with lab: 2 semesters
English: 2 semesters
Calculus:

Notice that the sciences all have labs. There will be many more sciences that you will need to take.

Also, admission committees look at the school you attended and consider this when they analyze your GPA. Having a 4.0 from an online program may not be weighed higher than another with a 3.0.

I am not discouraging earning your bachelors online at all. I am just warning you that medical school may not be very fond of all your courses being online. You can have some. They do not really care if you take online courses in non-science courses. If you are good at math, you can even take that online. Just realize that medical schools are very tough to get into. You need every advantage of the classroom that you can get to earn your professor’s respect. This will help you get an excellent recommendation. Also, if you did extremely well in the class, you could conduct research with the professor and/or become a TA. Medical schools love that. During your interview, they may even ask you about research you have conducted.

Labs are to be in a laboratory. I had at leat 10-12 labs as a biology major. They consisted of experiments, research, disections, and observations that simply can not be performed online. Even if you can, it will not be the same as hands on.

If you want an online earned degree, I would recommend looking into another future path that would be able to accomodate your degree, such as psychology or even business. However, if you are passionate about going to medical school, talk to your advisor about your situation. He/she may be able to have to dean authorize you to take some science classes at a local college where you will be and have the credits transferred. If you are coming back within 4 years, wait to take the science classes when you get back. Take all the humanities, social sciences, englishes, etc. Online.

Basically, if you just want to take online courses to satisfy social sciences, humanities, english, etc., that is absolutely fine! The only classes that require you to be in class are science classes. The material cannot be taught online. Wait until organic chem if you don’t believe me.

Hope this advice helps! Good luck 🙂

Carol asks…

What should I look for when choosing a Pet Groomer school / course?

I want to earn a Pet Grooming Diploma. I have looked at a few schools, but some look like scams. There seems to be some great ones in Ontario but that’s too far away. Does it really matter where I get certified from? Will it make a difference when getting a job or starting a business? Or should I be careful where I spend 2000$ for the diploma????? What about online courses? Any groomers out there?

Jere answers:

$2,000 isn’t too bad for school. I spent $4,500 and that was 15 years ago.
Someone else said that if you haven’t worked in the grooming feild before, you should do that first. Probably a good idea. I was a bather at a very busy salon for 4 years before I decided to go to school. Alot of people think that being a groomer, all we do is play with dogs all day…I wish that were true.

In a way, yes it will matter where you get your training from. You need to learn correct breed standards and proper handeling from a GOOD groomer.
You have a few options…

Find a groomer who is willing to train you…this may be harder than it sounds. Alot of groomers are too busy working to have the time to show you everything. That is why schools are a good way to go. The instructors are there to teach you and have the time to do it. The place I was a bather at started to train me to groom. The groomer just did not have the time, and I only learned a few things.

Petsmart/Petco..personally, I myself would not hire someone fresh out of their training. Then again, once you go to their training, you have to sign a contract with them for at least a year. Their course is 4 weeks and then you train under their grooming manager..great if the groom mgr is a decent groomer, but I have seen alot of them who should not be grooming dogs themselves, let alone training others.
But, they do pay you while you are training.

Online courses…I have mixed feelings about those…to me, grooming is a hands on learning experience…unless you have all the different breeds available to you to learn on…an online course is just a bunch of words in a book.

Personally..I would go to an accreditied school. I went to one and I think it was a good decision. Alot of groomers will call the schools when they are looking for help. The school may be able to help you find a job right after completion.

start up business loan?

I have been driving for 7 years otr and local. I have a chance to buy the route that I have been running for the past 3years at 150k.Its a dedicated run that is guaranteed 24/7 but I have no money to buy it and my credit is not to good to get a normal loan.Someone please help I’m tried of living pay check to pay check this is my ticket to financial freedom. How do I go about getting my credit repaired quickly or getting a loan without having good credit please help asap!!

Jere answers:

A true business credit card is a line of credit that is taken in the name of the business, under the business’ credit. Activity, whether good or bad, is reflected on your business’ credit report through D&B and other financial institutions, and the liability for any debts incurred and bills owed is with the business. However, some companies out there offer “business” credit cards which they require a person guarantee for. These institutions will often ask for a personal guarantee, and will almost always ask for a social security number from the person applying for the card. If this is the case, the credit card is not a business credit card, but is simply a personal credit card which is used for the business. The business is not liable for bills and debts – you are. When applying for a credit card for your business, watch out for areas asking for your SSN (and not your TaxID or EIN) and be wary of any credit card that asks for a personal guarantee. By ensuring that your credit card is in the name of your business, you can help to build your business’ credit, while avoiding creating problems with your own.

Many companies offer a list of credit cards that are issued under the business name only. Those lists typically run $300-$900, depending on the quality of the information inquiring. I would suggest starting your search online via google or yahoo. Search for “strong business credit” (just like that in quotes) to find services that sell the information.

Good luck,

Small Business?

I have two talents-Cooking Vegetarian Indian food and making of beautiful hand crafted greeting cards. How can I develop these two things and develop one of these art in to a small business in Canada as I am not finding any job there. Can sombody help me ?

Jere answers:

Consider small-party event planning. Specialize on parties of 20 or less. Look online for vegetarian groups and organizations in the area. Market your services. Plan parties from the invites to the menu and you’re in business. The only outside help you’ll need, is one person to help you set up and serve on the day of the party.

Good luck!

William asks…

How do I to start a internet business?

Is there a legit way to make money online?

Jere answers:

Starting and operating an Internet business is surprisingly similar to operating any other business. Good business practices, like building the confidence of customers through truthful advertising, providing products and services at a fair price, and developing long-term business relationships, are as applicable to Internet businesses as they are to any other businesses.

Having said that, there are some important differences related to Internet businesses.

* Low Start-up Costs – When you decide to start a business online, you can do so with as little as a few hundred dollars and a good idea. However, don’t be misled into believing that the Internet is an arena for instant riches with little or no effort. Nothing could be further from the truth. Like any business, it takes creativity, planning, money and hard work to be successful.
* Multiple Skill Requirements – Suddenly it’s not enough to simply have a good product or service. To use the Internet effectively, you now need to have or be able to acquire skills in graphic design, web server technology, programming, and a brand new marketing medium, not to mention skills needed in multi-lingual translations, international accounting and legal issues. Fortunately, it is not necessary that you have all this knowledge yourself. With the right combination of strategic partners and associates, all of these skills are easily found, if you know where to look. That’s where we come in! We can get you in touch with all the professionals you need to accomplish your task.
* Endless Marketing Possibilities – The opportunities and ease of fostering strategic alliances to bolster marketing efforts is unsurpassed on the Internet. The reason we see so many cooperative relationships between companies online is that doing so has become so simple and so profitable. The advertising industry has found itself with many more possibilities as well as significantly more competition.
* Easily Traceable Results – Another byproduct of business on the internet is that tracking potential customers as a group and visitor preferences is an ordinary part of business on the Internet. See Promotion for more on this topic!
* International Audience – Even if you do not think of your business as an international business, you must recognize that your visitors are likely to be from all over the world. You should consider whether or not you are prepared for international shipping and other transactions with countries other than your own. You should also strongly consider having your website translated onto languages other than English. The percentage of non-US businesses on the Internet has risen dramatically in just the past year! Starting an online business
* Professional Look – If you are a Web Professional who is planning and designing web pages for others, we have a secret to share with you. It’s called the “Proposal Kit”. What it’s done for our company is help us look more professional, charge higher fees and get paid for all of our work. It’s the best investment we have made since we started our business!

Ruth asks…

What will be the impact in online business when WiMax comes.?

WiMax is a Wireless Internet connection something like Wi-Fi(Wireless LAN). But WiMax comes with more range (50Km)and more speed.
for more details visit:
http://www.lightreading.com/document.asp?doc_id=65348&print=true

Jere answers:

It depends upon the bucks the service providers ask for. Since many people do not have laptops or PDA’s, WiMax will be a niche market..for awhile. Eventually services like audio/video streaming and VoIP will spearhead the growth of WiMax (and other wireless technologies) making information truly accessible anywhere.

The biggest impact will be determined by who takes advantage of a expanding group of mobile users. Some services like GPS direction software will move off of dedicated hardware, back on to servers (Google maps) accessible through a web browser. New services will pop up, creating opportunities that never existed before.

The biggest question will be what platform the wireless Internet will best be served on. Mobile phones? PDAs? Laptops? “Embedded” devices? Something new? Should be fun to find out.

Your Questions About Internet Business Plan

Mandy asks…

Is fooling people the only way to succeed in internet business opportunities?

I have been told that if there are people who earn money by internet bussines opportunities, it is because they are good at fooling people.
So, are all those internet business opportunities a scam? What’s your opinion?

Jere answers:

DO YOU HAVE A GOAL

Lion in Sahara has a goal, what that my be is not always that obvious , well one day he my want to have nice fresh meal, next day perhaps a drink of some clean water, the day after maybe a little sleep his next goal my be find a mate. Can you see the point in lion’s life he has a set of goals first to catch a prey, secondly kill the unfortunate catch and the last goal be happy with full belly. The lion has no choice in the matter the goal setting is in its genes without the goal in his make up there would be no success or even life for lion.

Humans have progressed beyond hunting for food in bush, or Sahara. But in food hutting there is a goal would you agree. So the in periods gone by the goals were somewhat simplistic, but never the less it has it massage for modern counterparts. Human progress from simply hunting and food gathering was accomplished not without a desire to survive and of course have easier and more prosperous life.

The human progress in education, technology, medical discoveries, engineering or travel to space has it’s seeds planted, to be firstly having vision and a goal without it anything would never happen.

What is a goal?
Goal is an objective, a purpose, aim, point or endeavor. The goal has to be set in understandable and achievable time. Action taken to bring the dream into being is part of system in thinking and process. The goal has first be established and acted upon. Without goals millions of people wonder through life without even realizing that they don’t have any goals to aspire to and still wonder why an earth they are poor. Food is one of many essential mineral or a fuel of life’s goal setting is important on equal terms.

Individual need to focus on where they want to be in five years time that in it self will stimulate goal setting as it is possible their situation will improve in five years time. A psychological barrier needs to be overcome with possible gain in future. There isn’t any point looking back to our past pains, because that is something we all want to escape especially if that past has not brought us any success.

Like any large corporation needs to have a plan and plan ahead, by setting up objectives or a goal. Those large corporations plan well ahead with their objectives, fro 5, 10, 15 years. They visualize the future in clear precise manner.

You are as individual need to think plan like large corporations, visualize your future where would you like to be in next five or ten years.
Set clear answer in all your departments work or business, home department, social department.

1)Work & business Department 5 years from now
What income do you desire in ten years?
What level of responsibility do you look for?
What prestige does seek from your work or business?

2)Home Department 5 years from now
What level of standard do you aspire to?
What kind of residence do you want to provide for yourself and your family?
What kind and where will be your next vacation?
What level of income will you give away to charity?

3)Social department 5 years from now
What kind of friends do you desire to have?
What social groups do want to join with?
What community position do you look to hold?
What worthwhile cause do you want to be champion of?

Al of us has a dream some are bigger then others, of what we really want to do. But few of us actually capitulate to a dream or desire instead to surrender to dreams we instead murder it here are the reason whey the dream is put into waste been.

1)Self deprecation many people say I want to represent my country in football but say I don’t like to train or like the coach.
2)Security – I am secured where I am which jus about trashes your goal.
3)Competition – the field is already so overcrowded.
4)Parental Dictation – You have heard hundreds of people say to young people I want to become a plumber but the parents say they would like their children to do this.
5)Family responsibility – The attitude well I have the family now and I can’t change now.

It is quite amazing the more successful a person is the easier it is for them to work on regular basis for more then 40 hours per week. The successful person has the energy fueled by the goal. The bigger the goal in the eyes, the more they see, and more energy one has. The point is this; the energy increase, multiplies when goal is set and work toward the goal. It is quite amazing the goal entrenched deep in your mind you will receive to energy to drive toward your accomplishment.

What not to do in 30 days improvements guide.
What not to do?
1)Putting things off till tomorrow
2)Negative language
3)Watching television for more then 60 minutes per day.
4)Gossip

Obtain those habits.
1)Examine your appearance each and every morning.
2)Plan your day’s work a day before.
3)Complement people on every opportunity.

Increase value in your work place
1)Do a better jog for your employer

Chris asks…

How does an internet connection work?

I’m doing a business project and basically my product is a wifi bracelet. You’ll have an internet connection wherever you go. I have the business plan and everything, but I don’t know how that would work. Like, with my modem, I can only connect to my internet until I’m a certain distance away. So I’m assuming the connection is attached to the modem. How would I manage that with a bracelet?

Jere answers:

That bracelet is impossible. However something similar is! You could have it connect to a 3g or 4g network, and have people pay a cell phone carrier for a plan. Then im assuming that the bracelet would create a wifi hotspot for your other devices? If so, well there already is something that does that, but it wouldn’t fit on a bracelet, well it might if you trim it down allot. Well the 3g network would be the only way to have this truly useful

Steven asks…

What are the 10 things I should know before starting an online business?

I’m planning to launch an international travel web site. Business plan, coding, designing etc have been done.. I see abnormalities around the internet world.. where some not so useful web sites rule and some very informative ones are invisible. Can we discuss what are most important things I need to know before I launch my intl travel web siite?

Jere answers:

The most important thing to know is marketing.

The reason that “some not so useful web sites rule and some very informative ones are invisible.” is because of great marketing, or a lack of it.

To make your online business succeed, you need to know about marketing. Read and learn everything you can about it.

Donna asks…

Does anyone know what kind of equipment is needed for the startup of a sandwich and coffee shop?

I would welcome any links to free resources on the internet, sample business plans, equipment cost, etc.

Jere answers:

May I suggest sandwich makings, a coffee pot, some coffee cups, coffee of course and a cash register for starters. Having some customers with cash in your pocket would be a big plus.

John asks…

What do I need to start my home based business?

I want to start a home-based internet business and have a very good business plan, but what do I need to get started? Do I need a tax ID? Anything else legally I need to have?

Jere answers:

Yes you need a federal tax ID and you also may want to look into zoning laws in your area. You many want to incorporate also into an LLC or S corp.

Your Questions About Direct Marketing Companies

Maria asks…

How do we encourage agents to sell our children’s toys?

How do we recruit agents to sell our wooden toys?
We have a children’s toy catalogue coming out soon and need agents across the UK to sell our beautiful hand-picked toys. Obviously – there are lots of other direct marketing companies out there selling in a similar way. We would like to know what would encourage you to join our team! http://www.tishtashtoys.com…

Jere answers:

Give them an incentive hun! Party planners, Mums at home, etc would love the chance of doing something like this, and you would probably find word gets round much quicker this way. How about putting up a notice in your local job centre, supermarket, doctors surgery, sell the agents job on ebay for £0.99 and ask them not to bid et al, and if this brings nothing, you can place an ad in Thursdays Daily Mail. Marketing is expensive, but there are other ways, it just takes effort and resoucefullness. Good Luck

George asks…

What is the best direct selling company?

I am looking to become a direct sales consultant to earn some extra money. I am looking for one that doesn’t have a large start up cost and will have good income potential. I have never done direct sales and am just looking for some ideas and suggestions.

Jere answers:

Direct selling is the marketing and selling of products directly to consumers away from a fixed retail location. Peddling is the oldest form of direct selling. Modern direct selling includes sales made through the party plan, one-on-one demonstrations, and other personal contact arrangements as well as internet sales. A textbook definition is: “The direct personal presentation, demonstration, and sale of products and services to consumers, usually in their homes or at their jobs.

Jenny asks…

What is the best way to launch a National Sales Team for my small company?

Hello,

I have a small Nutraceutical company with large growth. I would like to launch a National campaign seeking retail sales reps and direct distributors who market to retailers. I have great margins and I even have a corporate discount program that markets to large businesses. What is the best way to unfold this?

Jere answers:

Two of the best guides to developing a new sales force are these short articles here: http://www.doityourself.com/stry/ara_howtohireawinnin and here: http://www.nationalsalescenter.com/2009/04/how-to-hire-great-sales-reps/

Two key elements they mention that I find most valuable are:

1. Seriously consider getting a recruiting service to help you, especially when you need talent in cities where you don’t live. They may also be able to offer advice on competitive salary and compensation needs.

2. Ask your top customers or distributors who are the salesmen they most admire or are impressed with. Then contact them to know if they’d be willing to work for you or, if not, whom they may know that would be as good as they are.

Best of luck!

Helen asks…

Do you actively donate to any charities?

I am posting this question out of curiousity…and browsing to see what charity my money may go to this coming year. I actually work at a tele-marketing company that calls prospects and alum’s of certain colleges, and non-profits and we go on the search for pledges. So, just wondering how many people actually donate and what you donate to.

Jere answers:

I donate to Save the Children and find it really rewarding. You’re able to pick both the region of the world where your child lives, as well as the gender. You’re then assigned a child and given basic information such as where they live, their age, favorite activities, and their immediate family they live with, as well as a photograph. You also receive extensive information about the country and specific region where your child lives so you can better understand the living conditions you are faced with. You’re strongly encouraged to start a correspondence with your child, who will respond with letters and possibly pictures they’ve drawn. These letters back and forth are something so valued by your child, I often feel they are more important than the financial donation that accompanies it all.

It costs $28 per month, and you have the option of direct withdrawal from your bank account; this was pretty helpful for me, as it’s one less bill I have to worry about and I know my money will make it to Rosa and her village every month. The donations do not go directly to your child, but rather to the community to support schools and projects such as setting up farming and providing clean water. You receive information about the specific work Save the Children is doing where your child lives, and how much of a difference your donation alone can make. 92% of your money goes directly to your child’s village, which is very high compared to many similar charities.

I personally enjoy really being able to see what my donation is doing, as opposed to donating to a cause in general. I don’t wonder where exactly my money’s ending up each month, I know that I’m helping ensure Rosa can go to school full time by funding programs to make school available based around the times she and most other girls have to perform their daily chores. This along with funding more school supplies and teachers will help the 40% of children in her village who currently cannot attend school at all. I love to see her drawings hanging up in my kitchen alongside those that my siblings and when we were younger, and i’m always so happy to get an envelope in the mail with a mozambique postmark.

Anyway, as you can see I’m really passionate about this, and I haven’t really been big on donating to charities in the past, I’ve really only ever donated my time. If you’re looking to make a financial donation Save the Children is a great way to also get involved in the cause you’re supporting.

Robert asks…

Am I allowed to use another brands logo in an marketing piece for my own company?

I am making a direct mail marketing package to advertise my business, and I want to use another brands logo on the cover of it. I won’t be insulting or putting down the name of the other brand, I will just be using it to help illustrate the point of the direct mailer.

Does anyone know if I am allowed to do this without getting permission from them, or is it breaking copyright laws?

I am in South Africa, so British/European laws are similar to ours here, not really US laws.

Any info is appreciated, thanks

Jere answers:

The logo is most likely trademarked and you’ll run afoul of The Trade Marks Act if you use it without permission. Suggest you check to see if it is trademarked and if so, obtain permission to use. Otherwise, you’ll potentially find yourself a lot poorer after you’re sued.

Your Questions About The Real Biz

Jenny asks…

Does anyone know about the google Biz-kit?

I see ads for the google biz-kit and hear testimonials about how people are making a ton of money doing nothing more than posting ads on google. Has anyone tried it? What’s involved in getting started? What do you do? This is a job and like any job, I need more info before I jump in. I need more info from a REAL person who’s tried this not some ad saying they’ve made a ton of money.

Jere answers:

Google Biz Kit is a scam product, not a real job.

Google Biz Kit is a membership (costs 69.90 a month).

Google does not pay anyone to simply “post links”.
Google does not pay anyone every week.
Google does not “give you links to post”.
This is not a job “with Google” – Google has nothing to do with the Biz Kit.
This product is sold by a third party company.

Many customers have had their credit cards charged multiple times for the $1.95 shipping and handling charge as well as the monthly recurring rate.

Others have been charged for things they did not order, such as credit services or grant information.

Google Biz Kit is a rip off. Don’t buy it.

Betty asks…

Is fanmail.biz legitimate?

THIS IS NOT A QUESTION.
I am standing up for a board I CARE ABOUT.
PLEASE understand this IS LEGITIMATE!
This is not a home address site, this is a FAN MAIL site. I know it works… I’ve tried it. Please note all the “adults” on here that are supposed to be over 13 are under 13… so dont listen to there answers.
this is for ONLY fanmail and fanmail is forwarded to them. All addresses are real…. and do not be fooled by the “adults” answer “its fake”
just because it ends in .biz doesnt mean its a scam!!!! I will answer any questions

Jere answers:

‘m a Trainee Moderator on there! Of course it’s legitimate. I love fanmail.biz! I have gotten 20+ autographs from there and been collecting since April 25, 2008. I love fanmail.biz, it’s amazing! It’s not a scam either, it can’t be- it doesn’t sell! It lets you write to people you enjoy.

My username is missmaexox, look for me on there!

Helen asks…

Real online Jobs?

Is there any real online jobs where I don’t have to pay and anyone including people with mental handycaps can run, or I could do it for them or even help them to do it?

Jere answers:

Hello, you might be interested in the site below, it is 100% free! There is a short video demonstration! Good luck
http://www.mypowermall.com/biz/home/11087

Chris asks…

Are these Ugg Boots Real?

Im thinking of buying these, but only if they are real?

http://www.ukbootsale.biz/

if they are fake. where can i get cheap real ones?
i will only pay about £120

Jere answers:

Classic short uggs for £61.99, Lmfaoo fake!
Uggs are never that cheap + they barely go on sale.
Whould the seller be so stupid to get ripped off? I dont think soo…
Yes, the pic is a real pair of uggs, but they could always take it off another website and posting it on another website.
The company wants you to think that you are buying real uggs, but then they will send youu fake uggs.
This happened to my friend, and she couldnt return them.
Fake uggs look slighty different.
The colour is way lighter
The fur is fake and barely has any fur
The best place to get real uggs is the offical uggs website. Uggs sold there are half the prices from stores, so i would suggest buying from there.

Gud luck <3

Daniel asks…

Are there real work at home jobs?

Every time I search for work at home jobs, I see a lot of ads for biz ops. Are there reall work at home jobs with pay and benefits?

Jere answers:

You are right to be frustrated. Sometimes paid information or biz ops can be pretty deceptive, and made to look like real job postings. However, there are actually some large companies that do hire telecommuters for a variety of positions. Most of these positions do require some sort of experience or skill. I.e customer service, technical, etc.

A real position will have requirements like experience, skills, equipment, and it will probably require a resume or application. It will probably NOT require any upfront fee.

The website http://www.homeworkerforum.com has some real job listings, and some great ways to spot scams.

Your Questions About Internet Marketing Degree

Maria asks…

What do I need to create an educational online market place?

How Can I start an Internet service that hosts ,market, and sell online courses for students/clients and instructors.
It will not be an “accredited school and will not offer degrees or degree programs. It will be strictly virtual classrooms ,
Experts at something can come on the site and register and teach others what they know for a small fee. What type of software or hosting program will I need to accomplish something like this. I will like the students to log in and find all of their such as their lesson plan, they can update their preferences and so on.

Jere answers:

Take a look at what the Virtual Homeschool Group is doing. The website is at http://www.virtualhomeschoolgroup.com/.

They are using Moodle as their LMS (learner management system). You can access information about how to get Moodle for your own site at http://moodle.org/. The Visrtual Homeschool Group also uses live, online classrooms from Elluminate. You can try out Elluminate’s free 3-seater classroom by signing up for it at http://www.elluminate.com/vroom/. Live, online training for both of these platforms is available at the VHSG too. I hisghly recommend joining the VHSG Ning social group. It was just set up this week so not many members are yet on, but it is an easy place to start getting to know the people that know and ask your questions. You can access the VHSG Ning group by clicking on the link on the right sidebar on the VHSG homepage. It is a friendly group, you will learn a lot there.

Carol asks…

What kind of job opportunities would I get with a degree in marketing?

I am planning on majoring in marketing and I just want to know what kind of jobs are out their? Are their any international jobs as well? Thanks!

Jere answers:

Well I am an internet marketer, it’s pretty simple. Just get into the internet marketing field by using a program like niche blitzkrieg or something along those lines. It’s not to difficult to start up your own internet business where you can make money online.

Ruth asks…

How to start a marketing and advertising business?

I want to know more about marketing and advertising business, so thats why I ask this Question!

Jere answers:

?????????????????

35 yrs in adv

Go to a good college, get your marketing degree and start there. Or go to work for an agency.
You can research about how agencies work on the internet.
How old are you?

???????????????????????

Sandra asks…

Do you have to be innovative for a marketing degree?

I want to learn more about marketing and perhaps even go on to specialise in marketing. What I’m wondering is is innovation a key quality for this kind of degree? Do you have to create a new brand or anything within the course? also, what jobs are available after a degree in business and marketing?

Jere answers:

Innovation is the creation of better or more effective products, processes, services, technologies, or ideas that are accepted by markets, governments, and society. Innovation refers to the use of a new idea or method therefore it involves marketing. For example using a new idea of advertising to get people to buy the new product. Therefore marketing involves some innovation.

Communications, strategy planning and research are also essential steps in marketing any brand or service. This leaves a number of career paths open for an individual with a college degree in marketing.

Research
Most marketing strategies are based on concrete research and analysis of historical results. Available career paths are market research or analyst. Many companies outsource some or all their analysts from other companies that supply research data.

Sales
A marketing degree is solid preparation for a job in sales or other sales-support functions such as category management, trade (or field) marketing, or positions that plan or execute promotions and events.

Marketing
Marketing managers’ job responsibilities vary depending on the industry (brand/product marketing, Internet marketing, nonprofit marketing). Other positions available are creative positions w/ advertising, media agency, public relations or communications.

Compensation
Any supporting role (research, analysis, category management, public relations) tends to have a lower salary than a marketing manager or sales manager position. Salary for a sales position most often relies in large or small part on bonuses/ commissions.

Expert Insight
Marketing manager positions in large companies will seek out those with a marketing degree and past experience. To get the experience, consider volunteer work with nonprofit agencies, internships or lower-paid analyst positions.

Donald asks…

What kind of degree do i need to be a professional fashion photographer?

I need to know what kind of degree i should be working towards in order to get the highest pay of fashion photography.

Jere answers:

You do not need to go to formal school to become a photographer but you have to learn it from somewhere be it from a class room environment or from you reading and doing things on your own. Some people require the hands-on of a teacher to gain knowledge and others can understand by just reading a book so choose which would be better for you.

Depending how good you are at shooting and marketing your images will depend on your income. You can starve one year and be feasting the next.

1. You should learn the technical aspects of photography and your camera (composition, shutter speed, rules of thirds, depth of field etc), once you understand these you will be able to create better images.

2. Shoot in “M” (manual mode) because you will have more control over your camera and not the other way around. When you are in one of the “Auto” modes the camera will just read the highlights and shadow areas and try to get you a picture. The camera is not smart enough to know what you are shooting.

3. You can start reading all kinds of books on this subject and get information from the internet. This includes web based classes, manufactures web sites to personal blogs.

4. Buy the best professional DSLR camera that you can afford this also includes good lenses. Take out your camera and manual sit down and go over all the buttons and knobs etc.. This is the best way for you to learn what your camera can do.

5. Start shooting with your camera to get practice and from what you are learning from reading and doing you will get better. Practice does make perfect. Take notes while shooting and then look at your photos on the computer find the best one from that set and see what you did to get the shot and why you like it more than the others.

6. You can get yourself a job as a photographers assistant (be it payed or free) and learn from that person.

7. A good portfolio (website) will speak for itself. Just make your portfolio fit to the people you are presenting it to. Example: If showing to a bride for a wedding, remove landscapes and corporate images they just want to see wedding images only and your style. If you have a website do the same and tailor it towards your clientele and leave the “fluff” images out.

Hope this helps,
Kevin

Thinking of opening a car sales business online so need a name please ?

Starting a car sales business online so need help with a catchy name please ? Thanks

Jere answers:

You at the moment do not to be so formal. Simply test the market with local various buy and sell sites on Facebook, Gumtree and Ebay to see how it goes. If it goes well then you can then link back to your own website etc. If you look at these sites you will see how competitive this market is,

Once you advertise and sell that first car you have to register as self employed with the Inland Revenue as well.

What laws are there behind online and phone solicitation?

I was hoping someone might be able to direct me to a website, or possibily give me some info for soliciting for a family business online and over the phone? In the US, what are the legal restrictions? Are there any states with special circumstances? Thank you.

Jere answers:

E-mail marketing requires that you do not violate the provisions of the “Can Spam Act.”
http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/business/ecommerce/bus61.shtm

Telephone solicitation requires that you honor the federal do-not-call registry.

Sandy asks…

Opening a small business online what address do i use?

Hi, im going to open a small business online(for now myspace and then ill go get a actual domain) for the handmade things i make and i dont know what address to use to ship things out and for people to bill me from. If i use my home address then people know where i live which is not what i want. Please help, Thanks 😀

Jere answers:

You should be able to use a P.O. Box for your business along with your email address as contact information.

For shipping a physical product, your actual street address isn’t necessary to be posted online. As far as being billed by your vendors; your street address doesn’t have to be shown online and if for some reason it must be, I’m sure your vendor will use a secure HTTPS:
URL.

Check the legal requirements in your state to be on the safe side.

Your Questions About Doing Business Online World

Mary asks…

How do I become a translator or interpreter for a living?

Do I need formal certification? How do I go about finding clients to translate for or companies to work for? If you are experienced as a translator or interpreter, I would appreciate you sharing your experiences and the working conditions, such as a typical day. Thank you.

Jere answers:

If you are serious about becoming a translator, you must be able to fulfil the following criteria, at the very least.

Translator Prerequisites

Your standard of education must be very high; with very few exceptions, a degree is essential, though not necessarily in languages – it is a positive advantage to have qualifications or experience in another subject. Postgraduate training in translation is useful. You must be able to write your own mother tongue impeccably in a style and register appropriate to the subject and have a flair for research on technical subjects.

It goes without saying, that you should have a thorough grasp of the languages in your language combination, you must also be familiar with the culture and customs of the country. The only way to do this is by surrounding yourself with the language, i.e: by living/studying in the country where the language is spoken. German is spoken in 5 countries: Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Luxembourg. There is no substitute for first-hand experience of living in a foreign culture, and as an Irishman living in Berlin, Germany, I can only recommend this course of action.

It is best to have a specific field that you specialise in, be it literature, technical, medical, legal.

Have invested in a minimum of equipment and software – At a minimum you should have a computer and appropriate word-processing software; fax machine and internet connection; suitable dictionaries, preferably online dictionaries like LEO, which return results at the touch of button, saving you an enormous amount of time searching through printed dictionaries. A telephone; answering machine (and, optionally, a dictating machine); increasingly, today’s translators are also using translation memory software and other translation tools. In an office translation environment, the use of the Computer-Aided Translation (CAT)-tool Trados has become the standard. CAT-tools like Trados or Déjà vu can cost quite a handful. If funds do not allow, seriously think about taking out a loan to cover start-up expenses. The investment will pay off.

While it is not the industry standard, Wordfast also offers a very resourceful alternative as it has the functionality of Trados and Déjà vu, but doesn’t cost you a penny. Donations, however, are welcome.

Produce a well-typed, well-presented curriculum vitae, briefly describing your education, qualifications and the languages from which you translate (source language/s). For Germany, you should usually include a picture of yourself beside your name and address and choose a tabular layout.

A translator translates from a source language into a target language. You should translate only into your mother tongue (target language). Make sure you mention any other degrees you may have or relevant work experience. Say how you produce your work (word-processing software) and whether you can communicate by email or fax.

Never shy away from asking a friend who works in business or in the language world to take a critical look at your CV before sending it out. It is, after all, your career we’re talking about! In fact, if they can help you even more, all the better.

If sitting at home all the time does not appeal to you, then you should not rule out the possibility of working as a freelance translator with a 9-5 office job. I myself worked in an office where the majority of translators were freelancers.

An online translation forum is a great way of getting your foot in the door. Sign up for e-zines and newsletters.

You should send your CV and a short covering letter to possible places of employment: Not just translation companies though, try local exporting/importing firms of whose products/business you have special subject knowledge. If you are a student, there are plenty of companies out there looking to take on apprentices with a view to later full-time employment.

A-Z Checklist for Translating

Business-like is a word you should not forget! As long as you have an answer to my a-z of questions, and tick them off when you’ve an answer for each one, then you should be ok.

Pre-Translation – You should know…

A) Who is the translation for – this can be helpful when determining the register of your translation.

B) Is there a contact for queries? Make sure you have records of the contact person’s details: name, email, telephone&remember business-like as always. Always keep records.

C) Find out if the language has to be translated into a particular variant. UK English or US English?

D) Are there particular terms that the translation should include for consistency?

E) If working under contract for a translation company, do they have a style guide that you should follow: i.e: Rules for translating dates etc.

F) Are text areas, embedded in tables and images, to be translated as well? If so, knowledge of graphic editing programs is of an advantage.

G) Are you required to use a specific word processing software for the translation?

H) Are you required to use a specific Computer-Aided Translation (CAT)-tool for the translation e.g. Trados, Déjà Vu?

I) Is there a translation memory available for the translation?

Double-Checking

j) Before delivering: has the translation been double-checked for accuracy, consistency, spelling, font styles the same?

K) Does the text sound as if it was translated? If in doubt get someone who doesn’t speak the source language to have a quick read through your translation.

Delivery

l) Where is the translation to be delivered? To the customer’s address, Internet address?

M) When is the translation deadline?

N) How is the translation to be delivered? By fax, email, post?

O) Do copies of material sent have to be returned?

Charging and Extra Charges

p) How will the translation be charged? Time, per word, per sentence?

Q) Will there be an additional charge for irregular difficulties?

R) Will there be an additional charge for research? Specialist terminology?

S) Must the translated text be proofread?

T) Will VAT be applicable?

Payment

u) How and when is payment to be made?

V) When is payment to be made?

W) What method of payment is to be used? Bank transfer, cheque?

Liability and Compensation

x) Is the translation to remain confidential?

Y) Does your indemnity insurance, and you will need indemnity insurance, cover all possibilities?

Z) Is the early termination of a job subject to compensation?

And that’s it! If you can answer these questions then you’re one step closer to becoming a professional.

Richard asks…

Does anybody know about online businesses-?

Jere answers:

Welcome To The World Wide Web!!

Online business requires basics like domain name for your website and then hosting it. Even websites are easy to be built, and you need n’t require to know the technical part behind it.

Visit http://www.domain-name-register-store.com/ and get support.

How to Set Up an Online Store

There’s so much to consider when setting up an online store that it can seem downright overwhelming to a would-be ecommerce entrepreneur. From the little details to the bigger ones, you as the owner are responsible for all of it – and practically every last decision point could be treated in an article of its own. Think of this, then, as an overview of the process.

Before you even take the first step of going into business online, you need to ask some of the same questions you’d ask when going into any business. Do you have something to market? That is, can you give your customers something they want, for which they’ll pay you enough money for you to turn a profit? It doesn’t have to be a specific product; it can be a service, or it can even be a combination of the two. One entrepreneur I know writes and maintains custom software for small businesses, blurring the line between a product and a service.

Once you’ve decided what kind of online business you’re getting into, you need to choose a domain name. This is fairly important, since it will be your company’s online identity. Think of Amazon, for example. The point is, all of your customers will remember your URL, so you want to choose one that will stick in their heads, and give a favorable impression. If you’d like to read more about choosing a domain name, there are a number of articles on the subject, including one here on Web Hosters.

So, you know what you’re going to offer for sale, and you’ve chosen your domain name. What’s the next step? You want to register your domain name, and you want to put together a website that will encourage your customers to trust you and buy

Get started at http://www.domain-name-register-store.com/

Good luck!
Vera Chandler.

Paul asks…

Registering Online Business?

I am thinking of starting an online business where I would be selling service (in for form of consultation). The whole process would be online. Do I need to register the business and if so where? Because when you are online you are selling the service all over the world.

Jere answers:

Don’t do it! You can’t make money online at all!

Sandy asks…

how does online shopping impact the world?

please help!! need this question answered for my assignment

Jere answers:

Stores such as Kroger, Walmart, JC Penny, Target, etc, are all effected because their customers are now able to shop online instead of in the store. Going into great detail, less people will be spending time in a store, and the longer you spend in a store, the more money you spend (proven by experimentation). People will be giving less money to specific stores until eventually they will go out of business. People will leave their house less often, as it will be delivered right to their door. Think about all the walking you do when you are in a store, it could cause people to become less active (going to an extreme with that). People would have more time for other things, it takes me an hour and a half to shop for groceries. People that work in stores might be fired or laid off because there is no longer a need for them. Jobs in the trucking industry like Fed ex and UPS might rise.

Jere answers:

The Internet started as a small network linking the the University of California, Los Angeles and the Stanford Research Institute on 29 November 1969. By 5 December 1969, a 4-node network was connected by adding the University of Utah and the University of California, Santa Barbara. Building on ideas developed in ALOHAnet, the ARPANET started in 1972 and was growing rapidly, by 1981 the number of hosts had grown to 213, with a new host being added approximately every twenty days.
ARPANET became the technical core of what would become the Internet, and a primary tool in developing the technologies used. ARPANET development was centered around the Request for Comments (RFC) process, still used today for proposing and distributing Internet Protocols and Systems. RFC 1, entitled “Host Software”, was written by Steve Crocker from the University of California, Los Angeles, and published on April 7, 1969. These early years were documented in the 1972 film Computer Networks: The Heralds of Resource Sharing.

Which are the best online marketing strategies for small business?

I always asked myself what are the best marketing strategies for a small business, I always thought the best marketing strategies for a small business is never give up
Do you agree with me or do you have other several ideas about the best marketing strategies for small business?

Jere answers:

I agree with Joe McCoy!

It would be really smart to learn how to rank one in google if you want to make real money online at the same time convert your website visitor into a paying consumer. You can start with learning copywriting and seo. Copywriting is bringing people in your page and seo is responsible for selling them. Try envision your company name, start with a plan, and learn SEO basics to get your site off to the right start. Make a business model using the internet and know your target market, posting to relevant sites relevant to your product would be a good start get traffic and get indexed in google.

Aside from that you can also do social media marketing to advertise your product for free, spreading it with less effort. And join internet marketing communities to start sharing ideas with members about strategies about online businesses and web development. These communities can help you get your business started without spending big bucks.

David asks…

Can anyone help me with a detailed affiliate marketing strategy?

I started getting involved in affiliate marketing a couple of months ago, but I feel like I am jumping all over and not getting anything accomplished. I need an actual affiliate marketing strategy that I can follow step by step. Does anybody have a good one to follow? I am willing to pay some money for a program or tutorial.

Jere answers:

Just like you I only started doing affiliate marketing about 3 months ago, but before that I had researched it for about 3 months. I came across a website for Matt Bacak, www.mattbacak.com, who is already a millionaire and I think he is only like 30 years old. He has several products that you can buy and also a newsletter that you can subscribe to you called Internet Marketing Dirt. I have found his products and even his free information on affiliate marketing strategy a ton better and more informative than anybody else’s that I have come across in the 3 months that I did research on affiliate marketing.

I have only been doing actual affiliate marketing part-time at nights and on weekends for 3 months, but I am seeing some pretty good income right now. It’s enough to pay my car payment as well as groceries for the month for our family of 3 so I can’t complain. And I know that it will only increase the more I work at it because I am learning how to be more efficient every day. Although I may never be able to quit my full-time job, I will continue to have this extra money for quite awhile, which means that my wife can stop working.

Anyways, check out Matt’s website and check out the different products as well as his newsletters as he has a great affiliate marketing strategy and is very willing to share it with anyone who will listen.

Your Questions About Email Marketing Lists

Charles asks…

How can I improve my email marketing campaigns?

I have a small list of emails of people who are interested. I would like to increase my list.

Jere answers:

Are you looking to improve your current email marketing? Or increase you email list? Looks like two questions.

To increase your email marketing list, include a link to a web form on your postal mail piece directing the consumers to visit that site and register for any number of reasons (sign up to receive special offers, sign up for our email newsletter, sign up for acces to XXX, etc). Once they register, they are providing you with their email address so the email is can spam compliant.

Maria asks…

Is a double opt in email list that important?

I have 2 blogs that I am thinking about putting a double opt in email list on, but I want to make sure that it is worth it before I pay for the program to do this. What are your thoughts and experiences with it?

Jere answers:

I have a double opt in email list on the 4 websites and 2 blogs that I have. I don’t have one on the other websites that are optimized only for Adsense since I will not be trying to sell them anything and usually email marketing doesn’t work that well with pay per click optimization sites.

But with blogs, I think that a double opt in email list is pretty important if you have enough traffic right now to justify using one. If you have only a couple hundred visitors a month on your blog, then I would not waste my money at that point on the autoresponder program. But if you have a couple hundred unique views a day on your blog, then it may be worthwhile. You can always test it out and see if you are making up the difference for the program in the extra money you see.

Another added plus that I learned was that if you have a double opt in email list you will not have to worry about spam bots joining your email list. These bots can’t confirm the email so they never get put on the list. If you want to learn more info on email list, then I recommend you check out www.mattbacak.com. He is literally a genus at these types of lists and his informational newsletter can steer you in the direction that is best for your needs.

Sandy asks…

creating an email list with Feedburner?

I have an email list that I send a tip of the day to. I would like to transfer to Feedburner and understand I need to set my tips into an RSS feed. Is there any way to have Feedburner send one tip a day automatically without having to send the tips every day?

Jere answers:

I wasn’t aware of Feedburner email management until I read up on it:
http://support.google.com/feedburner/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=78982

It seems like a roundabout process, though it appears you can schedule daily transmissions, providing there are updates in your feed list.

More typically a marketer would use an autoresponder email management service where you could schedule a sequence of mailings in advance, most of these services require your users subscribe through their provided forms in order to maintain high deliverability and low spam complaints with the ISP postmasters. Constant Contact may be one that allows imported, Aweber is the standard used most, these services typically cost $20 a month, though Mail Chimp offers a perpetually free account for up to 2000 addresses, providing you are not marketing anything remotely shady.

Sharon asks…

How can I find a targeted mailing/emailing list for screenwriters?

I am interested in promoting my website and services to a very targeted niche market: screenwriters and amateurs who write screenplays. But I am having a hard time finding a mailing list or opt-in emailing list for this specific group to promote to. I have checked with some of the big mailing list companies but my niche is just that-a niche. I already promote my site through Google adwords but now want to send direct mail or email.

Does anyone have any suggestions for finding lists for such a small targeted group? Thanks.

Jere answers:

I would check with some of the associations, like the Writer’s Guild and see if their list is available for purchase. Many times, associations and memberships will sell their lists to companies offering services.

You may also want to find out if they print any directories w/names and addresses. It’s more time consuming but you would need to data entry/scan in the list to create your prospect list.

John asks…

Need business people mail ids for email marketing?

Hi,
I am new in email marketing kindly provide business people mail id for email marketing.

Jere answers:

If you are new in email marketing, you know that:

1 – People HATE spam; and sending emails to people who did not agree to receive emails from you is spamming. If you simply ask like that to provide the business emails held by other marketers here in YA, that’s spamming

2 – There’s a reason why emails are being SOLD — because it takes time and strategy to gather them. You can’t expect people to hand their list to you for free.

You are obviously very new in email marketing. I suggest you read up on the ethics of email marketing. Get a copy of magazines such as Target Marketing http://www.targetmarketingmag.com to learn about the new rudiments of email marketing and the challenges faced by email marketers.

Your Questions About Direct Marketing Association

Thomas asks…

How do I become a theatre director, lyricist, or playwright?

So, I’m slowly thinking about going into the show business as either a director, lyricist, or playwright. Right now, I’m daydreaming a musical adaption of a movie and I even wrote 2 songs for it. And I’m just noticing that I’m having a passion to make it into a Broadway show. In fact, maybe being a director,, lyricist, or playwright could be my calling. I’ve been thinking about directing some productions anyway.

What do you think? AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, I’m in college right now, so what classes should I take? (I have to be a Theatre/English major, right? What about Music minor for lyricist?)

Jere answers:

First of all, I can’t tell you how awesome it is to find someone on here who wants to get into theatre and isn’t looking for advice on becoming a high-paid actress. Kudos to you!

Personally, I started my theatrical career as a performer, singing and dancing and acting in all sorts of things. I was also a dance teacher, and found that I loved putting recitals together more than I loved the spotlight; all of the behind-the-scenes stuff just made me incredibly happy. I started looking for jobs choreographing and costuming for productions, and actually got a “break” from a fellow director who liked the way that I coached the dancers in her production. She convinced her people to have me direct a musical, and after that was successful, they asked me to do more… And then put together an original production (which I was very glad to do!).

Directing is both tons of fun of unbelievably frustrating. You get to work with (usually) talented people to make your vision of a show happen. You work with tech and others to create the right lighting, costumes, and so on. You deal with flaky actors who skip rehearsals or forget about them completely and costumers who show you a great sketch, then give you a finished piece that looks nothing like it. You put on a show and it’s awesome (or not) and you’re exhausted but happy (or disappointed). You get hired to direct if your shows are received well.

As a lyricist or playwright, it’s a bit harder, because work is more scarce and the pay can be lousy. However, it’s your words that are being presented to the audience.

To get into directing, get involved with your college’s theatre! Start as a Stage Manager, which is basically the Director’s Right Hand. Do it well, and do it every chance you get. Then propose directing a show to whomever is in charge of your threatre program. Know which show you want to do, how expensive licensing it will be, and be ready to put together a budget proposal – this is all part of being a director. Then, direct your show, do it well, and don’t lose your temper during the process. Then try directing at a community/local theatre, and keep at that until you’ve got a reasonable repertoire under your belt. Then you can send resumes to bigger companies/playhouses.

As for playwriting, try writing a play first. Buy a book on how to do this, and see if you find it enjoyable or just painful. Then scrap that play and write another, because the first is never great. Have this in hand when you seek out your theatre program director, and propose either you or someone else direct this play. If s/he likes it, cool. If not, ask for advice on how to write a better play. Keep trying.

Unless you’re a Theatre Major with a specialization/focus in Directing or Playwriting, your degree doesn’t matter that much. Start with your college’s theatre club/program/association, and get some experience under your belt. The director of said program can help you go from there with advice for your local market, which will be different for every region.

Right now I’m putting together a musical for which I will not only direct but also write the script, the music, and the lyrics, design and produce the costumes, design and produce the set, design and produce a few stage illusions, AND choreograph. I’ll also be doing the majority of P.R. And the like, because people up here don’t seem market shows the way we did in Vegas and I want this to be a hit – and marketing is vital. I don’t recommend that anyone try this unless they’ve got experience in all of these areas and can handle the stress of having the show take up at least a full year of their life (from concept to closing night). I’d recommend to pick ONE aspect of production and do that.

Finally, as for a musical adaptation of a movie… Only big-name playwrights get to do that. Start with original plays and get known. The licensing fee for adapting a movie is outrageous, and most companies won’t let “just anyone” do it; they want to know that your show will benefit them and the reputation of the movie/book. And you do not want the legal trouble that can come from producing an adaptation for which you don’t have permission.

Chris asks…

what are the best ways to earn money when you’re travelling?

I’m often traveling between countries and don’t have work visas for everywhere. I’d like to avoid cash in hand, black market stuff, and more at home, do-it-on-your-laptop, work from anywhere type stuff.
What’s good for reliable income? And a relatively quick effort to money ratio?
any names or web addresses of companies/ magazines/ employers to contact also would add to the helpfulness of answers!
there’s a couple of ideas, hmmm – any more?

Jere answers:

An excellent source for finding a legitimate home-based business is to check out Direct Selling Association (DSA) at http://www.dsa.org. DSA is the national trade association of the leading firms that manufacture and distribute goods and services sold directly to consumers.

My advice is to go where the money is and that is travel. Travel is a $7.1 billion industry and growing every day. A Baby Boomer is retiring every 8 seconds and the first thing they want to do is travel. The average family in the United States spends $4,200 annually on travel. This is why my wife and I started our own online travel business. We’ve looked for years for a home based business and this is the first thing that made sense to us. The best part is that it sells itself. All you have to do is tell people about it. The industry commissions are already built in. You can also learn to save thousands on your taxes and travel wholesale instead of retail. The company that we work through is publicly traded, SEC regulated, has a $6,000 guarantee, and even offers health insurance. They even send their top agents on a cruise to the Bahamas. No one else does this. We love this business!

Can the mailman stop delivering me store flyers and coupon packs?

Is there any way I can get the post office (US) to stop delivering the store flyers and ValPak coupon bundles? I never use nor look at them, they bury my real mail deep in the center, and it’s a waste of paper and time.

Jere answers:

You can give your Letter Carrier a letter stating, “I do not wish to receive unendorsed bulk business/standard mail in my mailbox;” or consider

The Mail Preference Service division of the Direct Marketing Association (known as DMA) compiles a list of people who do not want junk mail. This list is provided to any company who requests it, usually magazines.

Write Mail Preference Service and request your name, address, and phone number be deleted from all mailing and marketing lists. Provide them with three spellings or variations of your name, as well as with any other names at your address (including previous occupants). They will retain your information for five years. At that time you should write again. Be sure to write when you move. Send your name and address. Be sure to sign and date your letter.

How to uninstall Sims 2 Best of Business without deleting files?

I bought the Sims 2 Best of Business online, which means I DO NOT have the CD for it.
I had to reinstall the main Sims 2 and now need to reinstall the expansion packs to get them to work.
How do I uninstall then reinstall the game without loosing the files that I bought, and where do I fine the code to activate the game?

Jere answers:

You can copy and paste anywhere else the files on my documents and on my computer/c/program files/ea games (or something like that)/the sims 2…., or just copy the game that you downloaded, i mean, if may have a .iso file to it, doesn’t it? I think it does… Or you can just re-download it, than you go to ea games download manager (i think so) and download it again, or go to ea store online website, it may have something there proving that you bought the game or just contact ea games on support.ea, than you just tell them that you had a problem and you need to dwnload the game that you bought online, how can you proceed.

Your Questions About Business Online Services Group

Donald asks…

Online Business Help?

What are some steps I need to do in order to start my own online business. I am planning on selling sports collectibles.

Jere answers:

I own a business I run from my home and it is doing pretty well. I am 17 an started them when I was 16. Made $1,000 on first day live. Of course its e-Commerce since its run from my home. I got a job and used my first two paychecks to get everything going. I probably used about $200 to start the site and open all my accounts and services initially. Once I got sales, it didn’t matter any more! 😀

You should first obtain a permit or license. You will need a Resellers Permit or a Business License that can be obtained at your State Board of Equalization or on websites that assist with legal matters. A plus to this is if you have a Reseller’s Permit, you get whole prices and you will not be charged tax by the manufacture. A business it self does not have any legal involvement other then when registering for your Merchant Account, which is to receive payments, and your Reseller’s Permit. A business itself does not need insurance because all Liability depends on the type of ownership. I am guessing your company will be a Sole Proprietorship or Partnership thus putting all responsibility on you and/or your partners. For taxes, you may ONLY charge tax to buyers in the same state. All customers from other states do not have to pay tax.

I really recommend having an online site and here is a few tips about online sites:

First you need to submit your website to major search engine such as Dog Pile, Ask, MSN, Google, and Yahoo. Submission should be pretty easy, just go to the search engine page and look around for the option to submit a site.

The next step is to find affiliates. You will be amazed at the power of word-by-mouth. Find complementary websites and try to talk to the owners/management group and put a link of their site on yours and they will put one of yours on theirs. Scratch my back and I will scratch your back. When I said complementary, here is an example of what I mean, someone has a site selling shoes, a complementary site would sell socks, shoe polish, shoe repair service, custom shoe laces, and all other products or services related to shoes.

Your next step would be paid/free advertisement. Pay money to a marketing source of your choice and get your ads everywhere. Advertisement can be done freely as well and works just as well. Join as many forums related to your products in anyway possible. Just go join the forums, answer questions and build a reputation. In your profile signature, put a banner of your site or a link. As time goes by you can stop answering questions on the forum, and just say, “Hey, go to my site, I sell this.”

So there it is, for a home business:
1. Think of a Product and Target Consumer
2. Get a Merchant Account
3. Get a Permit or License
4. Find a Web Host
5. Search Engine Submission
6. Complementary Affiliates/Sponsors
7. Advertisement, Paid/Free

That should generate more visitors to your site as time goes by. Remember, all business services/stores take time to start up initially. So many competitors on the virtual worlds, usually takes 6 months to get weekly clients let alone daily. You have to have money to make money!

Hope I Helped,
Jason H.

I can help you and walk you through your new adventure. I received help from many mentors when starting my multiple businesses, I would be glad to pay it forward.

Mark asks…

Do I need a business (small) license to start a cleaning service?

I live in Dekalb County, Georgia

Jere answers:

You need to register your business with the state of Georgia. You can do that online here: https://services.georgia.gov/dor/olbr/TaxRegistrationGateway

It looks like you will need to get a business license through DeKalb County. More info here:
http://www.co.dekalb.ga.us/finance/business_alcohol.htm

You should also be bonded and insured. Being bonded lets your customers know that you’re legitimate. Having insurance protects you in case customers accuse you of damaging or stealing their property.

All of this can be overwhelming. The Small Business Development Centers offer free help getting your business off the ground. Find a local office here: http://www.sbdc.uga.edu/newsite/index.aspx?page_name=index

Also check to see whether there are any entrepreneurs’ groups or organizations in your area. Sometimes you can get help with those startup costs and also with publicizing your business.

Michael asks…

Where can I find good info/guide on promoting an online service/product on forums or discussion groups?

Jere answers:

The best way to promote an online service/product on forums or discussion groups is to become a VALUABLE member of that group. Showcase your expertise, be ready to help others out, be visible – and other members will either be curious enough to check your qualifications (and your website) or actually want to do business with you.

The “Internet newbie” way of using discussion forums is to find as many forums as possible and putting their advertisements/promotional spiel in the forums. They are not interested in participating, merely in SPAMMING the forum with their senseless posts.

The first thing to do is to check the member’s Terms of Service (TOS) of a forum. Some forums prohibit advertising the member’s products — no signature files at the end of the post, no posting of URL, etc. Example is Webmaster World http://www.webmasterworld.com which is a very active forum of webmasters; moderators are quick to remove any postings of URLs and block members spamming.

Some forums allow signature files; and if they do, then that is where you can advertise your business.

But really, you don’t need a book to tell you how to market using discussion forums. The key is simply to participate and become a useful addition to the community

3 Part Question: I want to start my own online web design business but i don’t know how to start.?

Plus I have a business name in mind but i don’t know if the business name is taken already. Couldn’t i get sued if the business name is already taken by another business somewhere in the world? If so, then how can i check to see if the name is taken already?

Jere answers:

How to Manage and Start a Home – Based Business

1) Think large for the long term, but think small in the beginning. Start your business by contacting people that you know ( friends, family, neighbors etc. ). Let these people know that you are in business, and explain to them what a convenient service you provide.

(2) Network your business as a fund-raiser. Contact local schools, churches, civic groups etc. Who want to raise money for their organization and keep a percentage of sales as your profit.

(3) Take advantage of any gift giving occasion ( holidays, birthdays, engagements, graduations, etc.) Keep a log of all special occasions for your customers.

(4) Contact local business who having waiting areas (family doctor, pediatrician, dentist, beautician, mechanics etc.) This is an excellent opportunity for you to offer your service at little or no additional cost to the customer.

(5) Ask existing customers for referrals. Most businesses get their start this way. For example: Your beautician built his or her client base from referrals of existing customers. Word of mouth is the most powerful form of advertisement.

(6) Contact your local Chamber of Commerce to get a listing of businesses ( and their address / Phone Number) in your area. Write a letter of introduction, or use our suggested letter of introduction, to contact them. There may be a small fee to get this list.

(7) Contact large businesses in your area.

(8) Keep updates on new residents in your area. Write a letter to welcome them to the community and tell them about your service. Form a business relationship with a local company that deals with major purchases ( real estate brokers, car salesman ).

(9) Build relationships with your customers. Follow up with existing customers on a regular basis ( every 3 mos. ) . And there are NO problems. Hint: Customers follow up is crucial to your business. If you do not follow up, your credibility can be destroyed. If you only call your customers once a year (when it is time to renew ), they will be less likely to renew through you if there have been problems and you were not available to handle them throughout the year.

10 Key Steps to Starting a Business

There are several key steps to starting a business in the city in which you live. The steps may vary according to the type of business you intend to start, but the following 10 steps will give you a general idea.

1.Get Basic Information

The Public Library provides significant resource materials, including
information on market research, trademark and service marks, how–to books on a variety of businesses and industries, etc. The Library also offers workshops on patent, trademark and copyright issues.

2. Create a Business Plan
A business plan is like a roadmap; it shows you where you are in relation to where you want to be. Whether you believe in a business plan or not, starting a business involves many ideas that need to be documented and actions that need to be taken. Many businesses fail without a business plan, and furthermore, banks require one prior to being considered for a loan.

Contact :
U.S Small Business Administration, Service Corps of Retired Executives

3. Determine a Business Name

The name you choose for your business is very important. If the name you choose is your own legal surname and a one-word description (such as John Smith Roofing) then you are not required to register a fictitious business name. If you choose a business name that does not meet these parameters (such as JS Expert Roofing) and your business is not registered with the state then state law requires you to file a fictitious business name statement. Please note that this statement does not protect the business name.

Please contact your local : County Clerk’s Office for more information.

4. Determine the Legal Structure of the Business

Your choice of legal structure will affect your income taxes and personal liability. Most businesses start as a Sole Proprietorship or a General Partnership and are generally the least complicated. Limited Partnerships, Limited Liability Partnerships, with the Corporations and Limited Liability Companies must register Secretary of State. You are strongly advised to contact your own accountant or attorney for advice and assistance in determining the best legal structure for you and your business.

Please contact: IRS’S Technical Services Division

5. Determine the Business Activity Type

There is a classification system for business activity types in which identifies a business activity and determines many of the start-up requirements and where the business can be located. For more information on business activity type contact:

City Treasurer’s Office
6. Select a Site and Determine Zoning and Site Permit Requirements
Determining zoning requirements prior to signing a lease or contract is imperative. You must check with t

Betty asks…

Building a small business…..?

I have all of my ideas written down, ready to be put into action. I have all of my refrences listed, my prices, even my goals to be in a competitive market. Now i need funding, for advertising, and hiring employees. …I have been checking arounds for government grants. I keep getting scammers. I know that you are not supposed to have to pay for info of this sort. Where do i go? I also have yet to get a tax identification number. I do need that as well. I know that i have a great plan, i just need to be pointed in the right direction. I would like to have my place up and going with 2-4 employees, by this time next year.

1. Who do i contact to get the forms for government grants? ( a true legit place)
2. How do i get my tax indentification number?
3. What can i do to help my application be more appealing?
4. What is the quickest way to go about getting this done.
5. How long does this process normally take?

Jere answers:

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) web site at http://www.irs.ustreas.gov/businesses/small/article/0,,id=98350,00.html contains all the information you need about EIN or tax identification number and how to apply for an EIN electronically.

As for grants, don’t waste your time looking for one. It is hard to find grants to start a business. Unlike the myths that some perpetuate, federal government and even private foundations hardly give grant money for a for-profit business. And yes, grants mean PAPERWORK – lots and lots of it, that is why a cottage industry of grant writers was born.

Nonetheless, you can go to the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) http://www.cfda.gov and Grants.gov http://www.grants.gov – these are two sites created by the federal government to provide transparency and information on grants. Browse through the listings and see if you can find any grant that would support a for-profit venture.

Even if you buy books on “how to get grants” or list that supposedly has information on grants — all of them are mere rehash of what CFDA has, albeit packaged differently. But still the info is the same – hardly any grants for starting a for profit business.

Even SBA does NOT give out grants. From the SBA website http://www.sba.gov/expanding/grants.html…

“The U.S. Small Business Administration does not offer grants to start or expand small businesses, although it does offer a wide variety of loan programs. (See http://www.sba.gov/financing for more information) While SBA does offer some grant programs, these are generally designed to expand and enhance organizations that provide small business management, technical, or financial assistance. These grants generally support non-profit organizations, intermediary lending institutions, and state and local governments.”

Here is a listing of federal grants for small businesses. See if there is any available for individuals for starting a business — THERE’S NONE.

Most of the federal grants are given to specific target groups with specific requirements (e.g. Minority business owners involved in transportation related contracts emanating from DOT – Grant#20.905 Disadvantaged Business Enterprises Short Term Lending Program

Grants are also often given to non profit groups or organizations involved in training or other similar activities (grant 59.043 Women’s Business Ownership Assistance that are given to those who will create women’s business center that will train women entrepreneurs

For private grants, you may want to check the Foundation Center’s Foundation Grants for Individuals Online.

Your Questions About How To Do Business Taxes Online

Jenny asks…

What kind of Business Tax ID or reseller permit do I need for a flea market business?

I will be buying stuff online and some website ask for a Business Tax ID, am ready to get one but I don’t know what kind of ID do I need since am not going to have any employees or a store. My business will be in the flea market

Thanks

Jere answers:

It sounds like you have a sole proprietorship. In this case you use your social security number for your tax ID. You will also need to file estimated taxes. You don’t pay estimated taxes the first year. The second year you know how much to estimate. Be sure to only write down sales that can be traced. Cash sales are your friend. Keep them separate. You will have to decide how stringent you are going to be about the taxes paid on sales. I had a home improvement business and I paid taxes on every penny that I made. Other people I know don’t turn in cash sales. You will have to decide for yourself.

Carol asks…

Should government be able to collect sales tax on online purchases to make it fair for brick-and-mortor stores?

I think it’s already pretty fair because when buying online, the consumer must pay a shipping fee close to what you would pay in taxes. Although the shipping money doesn’t go to the government, it wouldn’t be fair to tax online purchases because because then the online consumer has to pay more than the traditional consumer buying from a store. I think this will destroy online business and ultimately effect the economy.

Jere answers:

Where do you get the idea that on-line purchasers pay more? Most pay less, even when shipping charges are taken into account. Unless you are walking to the store, getting your purchases home definitely is not free. Requiring sales tax collections would come closer to leveling the playing field.

On the other hand, sales taxes are so complex that requiring on-line vendors to collect for every tax district nationwide (there are thousands once local option taxes are taken into consideration) would be a nearly insurmountable burden on retailers. A couple states even have split remitting systems where the vendor sends the state sales tax to the state and the local option tax to the local tax authorities. Imagine having to file hundreds of sales tax returns every month. It’s one thing for retailers that have grown a physical presence in all states and therefore have the infrastructure in place for compliance, but a new on-line start-up could be bankrupted by the compliance costs even before making their first sale.

Even if the law is changed to allow the collection of sales taxes across state lines, until such time as the required infrastructure to support it has been built, no money will start to flow. It would require a massive investment in EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) to automate the process sufficiently that the revenues would be greater than the cost of compliance before it would make sense to even try. Anyone who works in IT will tell you that EDI is the thing that gives us grey hair. There is no EDI standard (despite decades of trying) and without at least one for the calculation, collection, and remittance of sales taxes across state lines, it’s just not going to go anywhere.

George asks…

Can I file my personal taxes separate from my business taxes?

I have (2) W2’s and some other miscellaneous income from checking accounts, etc. and have a 1099-misc for my small business. Can I file my small business at H&R Block and file my personal taxes online? Please let me know if this is possible. THANKS!

Jere answers:

Unless you have a corporation set up, the income from the 1099Misc is reported on Schedule C of your personal 1040. For tax purposes, you and your business are one in the same and all of your income is reported on one return.

Helen asks…

Why is Ohio business tax law so complex and confusing and how might we change it?

So I was looking at starting an online bookstore here in Ohio and as I began to research things I was totally turned off by the craziness of the business tax laws and all the things that business owners have to try and keep up with or lose their businesses. They can’t be working the business because they are too concerned with making sure everyone gets their tax dollars. It’s crazy, and I need ideas on how we can make this better and why it is like this.

Jere answers:

This is why they hire bookkeepers and accountanta.

Laura asks…

How long after i submit my business license do i have to wait to begin operations?

I’m starting an online business (sole Proprietorship) after i submit the application for a business tax license how long do i have to wait to begin operations.

Jere answers:

As soon as you receive your license. Don’t you need a sales tax number also?

Your Questions About Doing Business Online World

John asks…

what is the easiest way to make money online without getting scamed?

I am looking for ways to make money online without the hassle, and the possiblity of being scamed. I heard and saw boges websites those that ask for your credit card number I don’t get into them website. so what ways can make online without a highschool deploma.

Jere answers:

If you want to work online from your computer at home, you are probably going to have to do it as a business owner, rather than as an employee. There are no online work-at-home “jobs”.

When you apply for a job offline, in the bricks and mortar world, do you have to pay anything? Of course not. It should be the same in the online world. If you are asked to pay any money, at best, it is a business opportunity, but more likely it is just a scam.

Be very careful that you don’t get scammed.

I do affiliate marketing online. I’ve been doing it for a year and I’m getting ready to quit my regular job, as I am now making over $10k per month. It takes dedicated work, at minimum a small amount of initial working capital, decent organizational skills, and persistence, but you can make a living at it if you stick with it.

But that is a business. And businesses require lots of work.

If you want something easy, with no investment, you could probably make $500 to $1000 per month getting paid by companies to write postings on blogs about their products. That’s about the only legitimate way that I know of to earn money online without any investment.

Good luck to you.

Richard asks…

What drop shipping company do you recommend?

We are starting an online business. I was going to use Doba but now I am also looking at Simplx and World Wide Brands. Who do you use and why?

Jere answers:

You can find plenty on Rip-off report on Doba and Simplx. While Simplex has little value to your business….Doba is a simple approach which lets them be the middle man and hide the true supplier sources. They can mark up the prices, shipping, and fees and then you sell products for them and they order them from the suppliers. WWB is great, but it is not a drop ship company…it is a directory of companies that you can use. Using middle man companies like Simpx and Doba can REALLY hurt your profits…see this tool to see how:

You can look at WWB but if you dont have the $300 just create a free account at Inventory Source. They have many of the same suppliers that Doba uses…but because you can work with them directly you have room to make a profit and run your business the way you need….plus IS has data service support and can load your products and images and apply updates to almost any cart platform like Yahoo Stores, eBay ProStores, osCommerce, Magento, CRE Loaded, and more.

How do I start business in the internet? What goods people will buy from Asia?

Set up a website and take payment through www.paypal.com
I would recommend you start with eBay and sell items on that before you tackle the online world. Good luck

Transferring Money from bank in Mexico to US?

I live and work in Monterrey Mexico, but I am originally from Arkansas. So I have an account in Arkansas and I am trying to transfer my funds from my bank here over to the one in Arkansas.

Basically I am looking for something like Paypal, except I am having a lot of trouble with them in getting everything certified as far as billing addresses and stuff goes.

So really my question is, does anyone know a bank that is maybe online world wide that can help me have both accounts and transfer money that way. I only need to transfer money about 2 times a month for a truck payment and a couple others . But I am at a loss. I can’t find an easy way. Does anyone have any problems like this? Please help.

Jere answers:

I have a friend who lives and owns a business in Mexico who was doing some wire transfers while she was here on vacation. She used the bank Wachovia (east coast bank) they didn’t charge a % just a flat $12 fee per transaction.

1 )Start with your idea. This probably isn’t a brand new invention or product. In fact, many successful small businesses have found a way to deliver an existing service or product more efficiently and economically or have customized an existing product or service to fit an opportunity.

2) Incorporate- 3 Easy Steps (1) Sign Up (2) Fill in online form (3) Launch your new corporation.
Put together a business plan. : This doesn’t require hundreds of pages with thousands of charts. Include research into things like how much you can charge for your product/service, how much it will cost to produce or deliver (include variable & fixed costs), and the size of your potential market (i.e. Number of customers). The plan should evaluate your competitors – how many competitors, how strong are they, where are they, how will you compete. The plan should state what is required to enter this market, barriers to entry such as high fixed costs (factories, restaurants) and government regulations that must be met.
3)Determine if you need financing. Your business plan will include a section on financing. How will you pay the costs to start and run your business? Do you need a bank loan? Use credit cards? Self finance? Also, you’ll need to consider how much salary you need to support yourself while starting your business.
4) Put together your initial marketing plan. Marketing need not cost a fortune. Some businesses require very little. For example, many service businesses such as accounting firms build their practices through word-of-mouth referrals. You can also join free or low-cost associations to build awareness of your small business. Again, your business plan (product, customer, competitor) will help you determine the marketing efforts you need to undertake.
5) Build your infrastructure early. This doesn’t mean build a big factory or a fancy office. It simply means keep accurate customer records, a clean set of updated books and a technology foundation, if necessary. One of the downfalls of many small businesses is that they don’t know if they’re making or losing money (i.e. The need for a clean set of books). Another downfall is when small business owners try to sell their company years later but lack accurate customer history and customer information. Many times, the customers of a small business are its best asset, and, without the records, the small business can be sold only for salvage.
6) Move forward and get started. Once you know you can be profitable take the leap and get started. Besides getting business supplies or advertising, plan ahead by establishing some new business clients ahead of time. If you’re business is unlike a restaurant, that physically needs to wait for customers to walk into it’s doors, establish accounts ahead of time. In this way, you will have pre-planned future receivables to look forward to. Think about and focus on making money first, where ever possible, instead of spending money. The more money you can bring in, without spending money, the more profitable you are going to be.
7) Use the web. Use every technology available that will give your business a competitive advantage. The internet is a customers research tool. Help future customers learn more about you and the details about what you sell and why your products or services are different and better for them than other competitors.
8) Make paying for your items or service convenient. In today’s world, understand how people pay. Carrying cash can be risky. Therefore, most people choose to carry Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover. All these credit cards are part of our societies everyday life for making purchases. Debit cards are becoming especially popular. So, along with having a sales counter cash register, get set up to accept credit cards for your business. If you have your website set up, you should also make paypal payments available because most consumers feel that this is more secure, and many will use paypal.
9) Purchase a new electronic credit card machine. These are now very affordable and available at wholesale prices for about $147. Be sure to look for a wholesale supplier, not a retail seller such as a bank. Banks usually charge higher prices or rent it to you, and you may pay for it many times over. The same credit machine supplier will more than likely be able to offer you credit machine service too. This monthly cost is about $10. By doing this you’ll be able to get equipment for less then the price of most cell phones. More importantly, you can offer your customers an easy way to accept credit cards. The goal is to help customers self-finance their purchases when they don’t or can’t use cash
