Your Questions About Internet Business Models

Joseph asks…

How to turn a $1000 business I started with my student loan to billion dollar business?

I watch the Shark Tank and Kevin O’Leary apparently started with $1000 and started a business in his basement and after 10 year he sell his company for $4.5 billion.

I want to be like him but I want to sell for at least $10 billion in 10 year how to do?

Jere answers:

Actually he started with $10,000 and it was the early 90s, so it would be more than $15,000 today. He also got the money from his mother, who probably didn’t charge him 7% interest like a student loan will.

His business model was basically to take things that people were giving away for free (crappy shareware games) and convince people to pay money for them with fancy packaging. If you can find a way to do that, you can be just as successful. With the internet, it probably won’t work as well with software anymore. Though that’s similar to the business model of many companies that produce open-source software like Red Hat – you get the software for free (or nearly free) and then pay for support.

Ken asks…

Are there any sites out there that can teach me how to start a home-based business?

I don’t have any idea what kind of business I want to start. I guess I just need step-by-step instructions.

Jere answers:

Hi, I have talked and coached hundreds of people looking for a “home based business”. First thing – get clear on what your looking for (income, expectations, etc.). Second – there are no step by step instructions (the wine business is not wellness business) Third – there is no magic fairy dust – so don;t expect something for nothing. The more you put in the more your get in return. This is a business not a job. Thta being said look for 3 things for personal success – the Market (most important) do you like it – is it huge and growing so you can grow in it. The Supplier – who are they – what is there financial track record, etc. Deal with an inexperienced startup – you may get burned, deal with a market leader your chance for success may be greater. The Support System – what infrastructure comes with the deal – systems, coaching, marketing, etc. Finally be clear on the costs of engaging in the business – there are always costs and that is good — if someone tells you are going to get something for nothing be wary. A little bit of money – a lot of hard work and teaming with the right group can make you successful. Get some training packages – take a small risk and learn some business models that are out there. Nobody is going to reveal anything on the internet that’s worth while. Try mine if you want – www.createthefuture.biz or call (866) 735-0537 BUT always bear in mind those 3 decision parameters. Good Luck

John asks…

Where can i find business models for an online businesses like ebay and myspace?

where can i find business models based on ebay and myspace fpr research

Jere answers:

Here are 3 business models frequently used for online businesses.

1)The Ecommerce Model

Revenue is generated by selling goods or services over the Internet. Examples of goods and services include products such as ebooks or candles and service such as consulting or virtual assistance. Selling products from affiliate programs would also be considered ecommerce. This is not an exhaustive list but it should give you an idea of what ecommerce is.

2) Content-Rich Model

Revenue is generated by selling advertising on your site or in your ezine. Lots of quality content is provided to visitors/subscribers to attract them and to keep them returning to your site or subscribed to your ezine.

The more visitors/subscribers your site or ezine has the more you can charge for advertising. Generally, advertisers pay a certain dollar amount per thousand visitors/subscribers.

3) Membership/Subscription Model

Revenue is generated by charging subscribers for access to your site or certain parts of your site. This model can also be used with ezines. You can charge subscribers to receive your ezine or generate a premium version of your ezine and charge a fee.

These are the 3 basic business models online businesses currently use. Of course these 3 models are not the only models out there. There are others.

Many online businesses use a combination of models. For example, you can develop a content-rich site about gardening and sell advertising space on that site to advertisers who are trying to reach people who are interested in gardening (content- rich model).

You can charge visitors for access to a premium area of your gardening site where you provide more quality content that can’t be accessed without becoming a member (membership/subscription model). You can also sell gardening supplies and books from your site (ecommerce model).

Daniel asks…

What do I need to start an online business?

I am 14 years old and I am very interested in starting an online business. My mom suggested I get a domain name , save a little cash and make something from home that is easy & cheap, and will also bring in a couple hundred dollars a year! If anyone could give me a couple pointers as to what I could make to sell, and how to advertise it. I would very much appreciate it!

Jere answers:

The first step to starting any business (online or not) is to think of a “business model”

A business model is simply a description of what you will do and how you will make money.

For example a business model can be as simple as: “i am going to start a lawn-mowing business where I earn money mowing lawns for people”

Or it can be as complicated as: “I am going to start a business where I develop a search engine which allows users on the internet to search for things they need (Google.com). I will make money from advertisers who place ads that appear in results using my search engine when search users click on their ads”

The key to both business models is that there is a way to make money doing something.

Once you decide what kind of thing your online business will do and how it will make money, then you can register a domain name. A domain name costs about $10 per year from many domain name providers such as godaddy. Your domain name is the address of your website. For example www.yahoo.com is a domain name.

Once you have registered a domain name you can start to develop your webpage. It can be helpful to learn about web design or to hire a web designer to help you create your website.

With your website up and running you can start to make money! Maybe your website will make money from subscribers, or advertisers, or people who buy your products. It all depends on your business model. Ask yourself, what will your business do and how will it make money? This is step 1.

Your Questions About Email Marketing Companies

Sharon asks…

What drives more subscriber clicks to a comapny homepage, a sales email or an article publication?

I am trying to find out a certain trends in email marketing. Will an opt-in subscriber to a B2C e-publication be more likely to follow through to a company homepage from a newsletter with relevant articles, or a publication with a couple sales offers or free offers?

Jere answers:

Personally, I would go for the published article. I’ve been so bombarded with sales email and spam (400 or more every 12 hours or so), that I’m currently have trouble associating anything good with companies that send me tons of email. I’m about as motivated to find out more about a company or product via spam emails as I am computerized telemarketing.

Free offers may or may not be tempting – however, I’m most interested in acquiring useful information.

Joseph asks…

Should I feel jealous of all my friends who are still in grad school?

I’m 26 and only ever got my BA. I graduated in 2008, which wasn’t a good year for anyone to be graduating. I worked in low-skill jobs for three years, got a good job with an abusive employer, and now I have a job where I have a lot of power and responsibility (I administer their entire email marketing plan) I feel the company is behind the curve and destined for failure.

A lot of my friends from university and high school are still in university studying things like Transgender Health Policy in South Africa, Marine Biology, and Romantic Poets (those are just three cases). I feel jealous that they aren’t stuck in the crappy job market like me. Should I be? I know my mostly older friends who have graduate degrees and jobs don’t have better jobs than I do. On the other hand, I feel it’s a waste of time to be 26 and still in school unless you have a pot of gold waiting for you at the end.

Jere answers:

I can understand why you envy your friends. It’s quite enjoyable to be part of a community of scholars, where people read, discuss what they’re reading, and write about it. Unfortunately, almost no one can stay in school forever. Very few people get jobs at universities. They will soon be joining you in the workplace if they are able to find jobs.

Since you enjoy learning, you can continue to read. You can attend lectures and other events at a college or university near you. You can also spend time participating in online courses (for credit or just for enjoyment). Academicearth.com and coursera.org offer free courses. You could also buy courses on CD from the Great Courses.

Mary asks…

Where do you buy security seals for tank trucks?

Hi, I am a saleswoman from a leading Chinese manufacturer of security seals. I am trying to email-market our products to carriers in the US, but got few responses. I am thinking perhaps they don’t like to handle the complicated import procedure. Could anybody give me a clue to the source channels used by these companies? Any other advices on this issue are also appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Jere answers:

Sale your seals to an import company that will take care of all the import paperwork. Or create your own import company that does it.

No truckers want to be held responsible by the government for something don’t really understand. Not worth the education.

Linda asks…

Can I obtain email addresses in Florida under the Sunshine Law from a government entity that collects them?

I work for a non-profit and would like to e-mail people in our city in Florida to inform them of our services. We don’t have a budget to purchase an e-mail list from a marketing company. Is there a public records request we could make to get e-mail addresses from a government agency that collects them? What agencies would collect them? (Maybe the DMV?) And how to do I make the request?

Jere answers:

There isn’t. Private information is private.

James asks…

Best email marketing course of your recommendation?

Hey, I’m starting to learn email marketing today and I really would love if you can recommend some good video training course, it will definitely speed up the process of learning, cheers.

Jere answers:

Digital marketing has overtaken the traditional marketing media methods of broadcast and cable television, print publications, and radio. Today most companies market themselves through email, search engines and various other areas on the internet. Digital marketing degrees, programs, and/or certifications may be obtained through the completion of a variety of different courses offered on campus at numerous universities or through the Internet.

Web Analytics
A web analytics course will provide students with the ability to measure digital marketing programs effectively. By tracking and analyzing the behavior of customers as well as browsers, a web analytics course will teach ways to maximize return on investments. A variety of topics are infused within the curriculum of the course: frequency and monetary analysis of sites; site usage; keywords and search engine placement; email campaigns; and measuring unique visitors.

Fundamentals of Marketing Management
Fundamentals of Marketing Management serves as an introduction to the basic principles of marketing strategy-making and marketing management. In this course the student will be taught four main concepts: how to analyze a marketing problem and propose and evaluate alternative solutions; how to evaluate and prioritize information that influences marketing decisions; how to apply general marketing concepts to new situations; and how to apply quantitative analysis to help solve marketing problems. If a master’s degree in digital marketing is desired, many universities will require completion of this course.

Digital Strategy
In a digital strategy course students will learn how a business can adapt its current marketing strategy to the latest strategy developments in Wi-Fi, online, wireless, video-on-demand, and streaming media. Online as well as offline research and discussion will take place in order for students to get an overview of digital marketing and its purpose.

Your Questions About Internet Marketing Jobs

Laura asks…

I am interested in graduating in a field related to computers, but I am not sure of what exact degree I should?

What should I take up –

computer engineering/
tele communtications/
computer science/
information science/
information technology.

is there a double degree I can take up?

I am interested in web designing and Internet marketing at the same time.

please brief about it. Also, how well off are the jobs in these sectors?

Jere answers:

I’m a recent Computer Science grad, and I can tell you from my experience the employers don’t care what your degree is as long as you can do your job well. Right now, demand for software engineering is high, so job seeking would be easier if you go down that road, i.e computer science or information technology.

Also the curriculum for each of these degrees depends on the university. My college didn’t care at all what courses one takes as long as it was within the department.

Betty asks…

Recommend Randy Ingermanson’s Fiction 101+201 to learn to write excellent fiction? Other suggestions?

I’ve a few books on fiction writing here-however Ingermanon’s course looks good. However, I’m familiar with much Internet marketing and wanted some other views if possible.

I’ve a particular space series I want to create, as much for my own enjoyment of writing it more than actually earning from it in the future.

So after all that, who would you rely on as teachers? The story I wish to weave is a mixture of high technology and magic, with time travel :-). I’m sure plenty similar have been done before-however I’d really like to do a 5 star job on it.

So, bearing in mind I’ve spent some time finding a few writers forums, I’m simply after wider views-testimonies-suggestions and things I wouldn’t have thought of in order to learn excellent writing as quickly as is sensible.

So folks, what do you think?

Jere answers:

Frankly, I’m no fan of how-to-write books or courses. It’s truly a learn-by-doing activity, assuming basic literacy skills (which you seem to have).

You sit down and write. You figure out what’s awful about it and fix it. New awfulnesses emerge, and you fix them. This cycle repeats a lot of times.

When it’s as good as you know how to make it, you find a reliable critic who reads in your genre (ideally, one who writes in your genre) and get their feedback, which will be most painful when it’s right. So you rewrite, and get fresh feedback from someone else, and finally, you try to get an agent or start submitting to small presses without one.

I’m quite fond of AbsoluteWrite.com/forums for critique purposes. Solid advice critiquing the work, not the writer, by people who know what they’re talking about.

John asks…

Would entrepreneurship be good or bad in our current economic climate?

It is already hard enough to find a job even If you have a college degree.

What are the pros and cons of staring your business in this economy? (so I can see reality)

The business could be anything.
Food, cafe, Internet, marketing, publishing, etc.

Jere answers:

There is no bad entrepreneur, said Schumpeter. They might loose some ethnics sometimes. We need your entrepreneurship to save not only our economy, but also the world. If you do cafe, please do it better than Starbuck.

James asks…

I was offered a job to write bad YELP reviews on local businesses?

I answered an ad on craigslist, and agreed to meet with the person at a local coffee shop. The Job was advertised as an “internet marketing and sales position” by a private party.
I was offered a job to write bad YELP reviews on local businesses such as restaurants, dry cleaners, house painters and automobile service centers. This is how it works; the person who is a YELP Salesperson gives me a list of businesses to bash 50-60 a week. Then she goes and shakes down the business owners offering to filter, remove or move my bad reviews to the bottom of the list for $800+ or –
I thought about contacting the police, shouldn’t this be illegal? Racketeering?

Jere answers:

It sure is. Contact the police immediately.

Your Questions About Internet Marketing Blog

Joseph asks…

Does anyone know where I can source some top quality info on securing joint ventures online?

I have a blog and affiliate marketing business and I am creating two ebook systems on growing your business online and getting social media traffic. I want to approach possible JV partners but I need the best approach – I want to learn from an internet marketing guru who walks the talk. What do you recommend? Thanks 🙂

Jere answers:

The approach I would take is to simply start emailing them. I have done it in the past with decent success, and I have found that many successful marketers are very nice people!

Jenny asks…

Does anybody know anything about Internet Marketing Dirt?

I remember coming across a newsletter called Internet Marketing Dirt, but I can’t remember exactly what it was about. Has anybody gotten this product? And where can I find more information about it?

Jere answers:

Internet Marketing Dirt is a newsletter that is put out every month by Matt Bacak. Matt has been around doing online marketing for about 7 years and makes millions of dollars. I have not subscribed to Internet Marketing Dirt yet, as I just discovered Matt a few weeks ago, but I am currently reading through his website and blog to see which of his products is best for me since I am new to Internet marketing. To find out more, look at his blog www.mattbacak.com.

I do have a friend that does Internet marketing and he is the one that told me about Matt Bacak. He actually belongs to Internet Marketing Gold which is Matt’s membership site. It also comes with a subscription to IM Dirt, so I think that I am going to go for it all and join this as well. It couldn’t hurt and the more knowledge you have from a seasoned veteran in this business, the more successful you are apt to be.

What form of payment I should use for my business?

I am a tutor who have been working for almost six years now. I want to expand my business online. I don’t know if I should charge people a certain rate, such as x$/hour, or should I leave a donation option for people. Which of the two options do you think that will help me attract a lot of customers and make a lot of money at the same time?
Oh and another thing, this is for online video with additional help from me answering questions the students might have regarding the materials being shown on the video.

Jere answers:

I don’t think a donation option is a good idea if you want to make a lot of money. You can offer first session for free but for further lessons you’d better set up a x$/hour fee. By the way, there are some websites that help tutors and students find each other and where you can list your tutoring profile. This can be a good option for you.

Linda asks…

Paul asks…

I am looking to start a web-pg business, What is the best way to start?

I want to start a web page to conduct a business online. It will be selling items and or a consulting/giving advice site. I am a mother of 2 who needs to supplement her income. I am crafty and have lots of ideas but dont know how to start? where to start? and does it cost me to have a web address and a site to use?

Jere answers:

1 A Website- You will need a website of your own to start your e-business. You can either get a free website from hosts like Yahoo Geocites, Doteasy, or Bravenet, or “Paid domain name and Webhosting”. There’re Web Hosting plans that cost as little as $2.95 per month. That’s less than one-tenth of your phone bill, so you should consider it.

2 Get an Idea- What is your site going to be about? You can make you site be about anything you want. It’s your Website.

3 Creating a Website- A website can be as little as one page, as long as it makes sense. And the fact is that a one-page website can generate you as much as $2,000 per day. You shouldn’t really stress yourself in that area.

4 Website Promotion: Here is the part most people forget to do. Of course you have to let people know about your website. Tell your friends, send some emails, and talk about it in forums. These are the simple ways you can promote your site. Also you might try submitting to search engines like google and yahoo.

Here’s a way you can earn extra cash from your site – Register For Google Adsense- Signing up for Google is Free, as long as you have established a website. After you sign up, all you do is paste Google ads (which will be provided for you by Google) on your site. Google pays you every time someone clicks on their ads from your site. You’re not required to make any sales or signups before getting paid. Some keywords bid as much as $30.00 per click. Imagine when you get those ads on your site, you will be generating Thousands of Dollars.

Your Questions About Doing Business Online Government

James asks…

How do you fill out application for government personal grant online? Can’t seem to find the website.?

Every time I try online they want you to purchase a cd and I read that it was scheme

Jere answers:

No, there are no personal grants. The government is NOT in the business of giving away free money for the sake of giving away money. There are no grants for paying bills, no grants for paying off credit cards, no grants for getting out of debt and no grants for simply fattening your wallet.

Grants are free, but it means OBLIGATION. You will be obligated to do as the grant sets out to do. Grants have objectives, and your purpose must fit the objective of the grant.

For one, you have to write the grant application and the grant application is not a simple document – you have to explain how your purpose for applying for the grant fits well with the objectives set out by the grant.

There is a stringent review process through a committee. You will compete with other applicants for the grant money, and this grant review committee will evaluate the merits of each proposal. Only those that they feel exemplifies the objective of the grant will be approved.

You can go to the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) http://www.cfda.gov and Grants.gov http://www.grants.gov – these are two sites created by the federal government to provide transparency and information on grants. Browse through the listings and see if you can find any grant that would support your purposes.

Even if you buy books on “how to get grants” or list that supposedly has information on grants — all of them are mere rehash of what CFDA has, albeit packaged differently.

Note though that these grants generally support non-profit organizations, intermediary lending institutions, and state and local governments. Most of the federal grants are given to specific target groups with specific requirements (e.g. Minority business owners involved in transportation related contracts emanating from DOT – Grant#20.905 Disadvantaged Business Enterprises Short Term Lending Program. Individuals especially for personal purposes are not eligible for federal grants.

Grants are also often given to non profit groups or organizations involved in training or other similar activities (grant 59.043 Women’s Business Ownership Assistance that are given to those who will create women’s business center that will train women entrepreneurs

Susan asks…

Where do you find new business grants to apply for online??

I am a young female looking to start a new business in Maine, and I can’t seem to find any grants to apply for anywhere!!!
Please help!!

Jere answers:

Greg R has copied the standard answer I typically give to this type of question. Here’s my exact answer I gave 2 months ago that Greg R has copied (he just added 1 paragraph to make his answer “unique”) http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AvQtPJw_EI7zNDUO5.PK_oAjzKIX;_ylv=3?qid=20070815125354AAlaVnm

It is hard to find grants to start a business. Unlike the myths that some perpetuate, federal government and even private foundations hardly give grant money for starting a for-profit business.

You can go to the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) http://www.cfda.gov and Grants.gov http://www.grants.gov – these are two sites created by the federal government to provide transparency and information on grants. Browse through the listings and see if you can find any grant that would support a for-profit venture.

Here is a listing of federal grants for small businesses. See if there is any available for individuals for starting a business — THERE’S NONE.

It’s a subscription based website ($9.95 per month) but their opening blurb only says that the database is ideal for “students, artists, academic researchers, libraries and financial aid offices.” Entrepreneurs are apparently not one of them, so I take it they also don’t have listings of private foundations who give grants to would-be entrepreneurs.

Charles asks…

How to Get a Business Name Trademarked/Registered?

If I created a company, what do I have to do to get the company name trademarked, and the business registered with the federal government?

If my business lives online (no brick and mortar store) are there any other policies or things I have to do?

Also, I created a slogan. What do I have to do with it to make sure nobody else takes it?

Any information would be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks!
Would I need to pay taxes if I’m selling products like shirts or something through and online website?

Is it OK if I just list, when I pay taxes, any profit that I make as “additional income”?

Jere answers:

You can do this online at the US Patent and Trademark Office website
www.uspto.gov

Although you do not have to incorporate, I encourage you for form an LLC
In most states, it’s easily done without an attorney at the secretary of state’s website
Check with the city where you will operate the business, you probably need a business license (nothing more than a mechanism for them to collect sales tax) which will most likely require you to get a state sales tax permit You have to check your state laws re: sales tax. You need to file a Schedule C as part of your 1040 with the IRS

Paul asks…

Government Business Grant?

How would a woman get a government grant to start a business.
Where would we look for the grant and how would we get it started on filing for the grant. Where would we get the paper work to file for the grant

Jere answers:

It is hard to find grants to start a business — even for women. There are a number of low-cost loan programs for women entrepreneurs and certifications that can allow women entrepreneurs to compete better in terms of government contracting, but not grants. Unlike the myths that some perpetuate, federal government and even private foundations hardly give grant money for a for-profit business.

Nonetheless, you can go to the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) http://www.cfda.gov and Grants.gov http://www.grants.gov – these are two sites created by the federal government to provide transparency and information on grants. Browse through the listings and see if you can find any grant that would support a for-profit venture.

Even if you buy books on “how to get grants” or list that supposedly has information on grants — all of them are mere rehash of what CFDA has, albeit packaged differently. But still the info is the same – hardly any grants for starting a for profit business.

Even SBA does NOT give out grants. From the SBA website http://www.sba.gov/expanding/grants.html…

“The U.S. Small Business Administration does not offer grants to start or expand small businesses, although it does offer a wide variety of loan programs. (See http://www.sba.gov/financing for more information) While SBA does offer some grant programs, these are generally designed to expand and enhance organizations that provide small business management, technical, or financial assistance. These grants generally support non-profit organizations, intermediary lending institutions, and state and local governments.”

Here is a listing of federal grants for small businesses. See if there is any available for individuals for starting a business — THERE’S NONE.

Most of the federal grants are given to specific target groups with specific requirements (e.g. Minority business owners involved in transportation related contracts emanating from DOT – Grant#20.905 Disadvantaged Business Enterprises Short Term Lending Program

Grants are also often given to non profit groups or organizations involved in training or other similar activities (grant 59.043 Women’s Business Ownership Assistance that are given to those who will create women’s business center that will train women entrepreneurs

Government Grants to start business

Jere answers:

It is hard to find grants to start a business. Unlike the myths that some perpetuate, federal government and even private foundations hardly give grant money for a for-profit business. And yes, grants mean PAPERWORK – lots and lots of it, that is why a cottage industry of grant writers was born.

Your Questions About Business Online Services

Jenny asks…

Online bookkeeping services?

I need a good company online.

Jere answers:

Books2Taxes is the number one online bookkeeping service for businesses and CPAs in the USA.

They are staffed with over 150 staff accountants and over 200 accounting clients. Each year they boast over 10,000 tax returns filed.

You can save up to 50% on your accounting costs by switching to Books2Taxes.

Sandy asks…

Online dog business?

For Pet Parents: What would be the ideal online doggie business and what services would benefit you most?
I am looking into beginning a Doggie Online Business in the (Very) near future and would like to know the public’s opinion……….FYI – Yes, I’m a pet parent also!

Jere answers:

I’ve noticed a trend toward providing the same types of services as you would toward a person. What about online doggie scrapbooking? Pet owners have hundreds of photos of their fave pets, but sometimes don’t have the time to organize them all; you could offer to have their digital photos turned into photo albums, with fun themes like “at the beach” or “fun at the park”.

Just an idea.

Mark asks…

how can i place a business online?

i like to place a maid service business online free

Jere answers:

Online classified ad sites hav some free sections, Craigslist.org and backpages.com are 2 in the U.S.

I’m afraid services may be a category that charges, in some cases they just need to varify you with an automated phone call to cut down on scam artists.

Richard asks…

Do you have to have Business license to start a online wireless service?

I was wondering do you need business license for a online wireless business,Im going threw another buisness to become a wireless dealer in the state of Ga

Jere answers:

You’ll certainly have to register your business with the secretary of state office. Most likely, the town or county your business resides will likely issue a business license. Since you work with telecommunications, there could be industry specific licensing requirement as well. At my company, Corporation Service Company, we help small business owners start their business by determining the licenses, permits and tax accounts needed to be complaint. If you’re interested feel free to contact us at 800.927.9800 ext. 5077. At the link you can find some more information about the business license services we offer: https://www.cscglobal.com/global/web/csc/business-licenses.html

Nancy asks…

Thinking about opening a small business online? Any suggestions?

Jere answers:

I think if you are thinking about online business, you should do some web services related business. If you are expert web developer, then try a good business or e-commerce website and provide your services online to different clients.
It is a great business which you never think about that.
Cemerons@gmail.com is my email for contacting me for further assistance.

Your Questions About Email Marketing Lists

Lizzie asks…

How can small and medium businesses use the Internet for marketing and increasing their sales?

Can you give me ideas about the different online marketing options that are available to small and medium sized businesses. Can you share your experience if you have used any of these methods for your business. How successful was the campaign? Do you think that the returns from online marketing is worth the effort?

Jere answers:

You can get plenty of ideas on various online marketing options available to small and medium sized businesses at:

http://takealeaf.com

How successful each type of online marketing will be really depends upon the type of business.

One of the most important things to do though is to build an email marketing list so that you can continue to market to your existing customers. Relationship-based marketing works extremely well for almost every business with an online presence.

Social media marketing is an inexpensive option that can be incredibly effective for all kinds of businesses, so it’s well worth exploring too.

Robert asks…

how can i send an email from my account using someone elses email address?

I want to do email marketing for people.

Jere answers:

I hate to break it to you, But they (spammers) are already doing that they send the message to a bad address with the target as the return address. The message arrives in the targets mailbox saying undeliverable message and the user most of the time opens the spam message. If you get caught by your ISP most likely they will end your account and black list you.

To do this you need to know a bit of programming, and be familiar with SMTP (simple mail transfer protocol). A good way to determine the format for the message, it to locate and familiarize yourself with the RFC for SMTP.

The RFC specifies the format, structure, and process for sending email. Once you’ve programmed the file structure then you need to submit the file to a SMTP server. But since most servers are password protected these days, to prevent such a thing, you will have to own or find a suitable target.

Your best bet is to establish a free email account at a hosted site and spam away until they shut you down.

Ruth asks…

I got an answer from the customer to ask to be removed from my email list, what should I do?

I send bulk emails to market my products two days ago, and today I received an email from my bulk emails. The email said my mail is spam and ask to be removed from my email list. What should I do? I am asking for a marketing advice.

Jere answers:

In the hope that someday that customer may contact you the least you can do is remove them from the list now>

John asks…

Who do you report a site to that refuses to honour your request to opt out of their daily emails?

I keep receiving emails from a marketing company called SMI. I have opted out of their emails at least 5 times and now I am annoyed that I still receive an email from them easily 2-3 times a week. Who do you report this to so that it stops besides marking them as SPAM.

Jere answers:

The “unsubscribe” link (in Spam mail) is merely a ploy to get you to open the spam email (searching for that link)—-which is your first mistake.
The second mistake is in clicking the unsubscribe link—-which is never honored anyway—and can (and does in some cases), carry a virus that will infect your computer.

You should never open unwanted mail—and most especially not to “unsubscribe”. All you have accomplish is to create more spam for yourself—-since spam mails usually contain a tracking device,— that, when opened, will automatically send your address to the “valid and responsive” list, that every spammer in the world has access to.

Just spam them or delete them OR—Check out “Mailwasher”, it’s a “big” help in eliminating spam from your inbox…

Click this link, for information about it.
It allows you to bounce emails back to the sender—saying address not found. They won’t waste their time sending, (or sharing your address with their cronies)—if they think they have an invalid address—So—Spammers will soon stop sending anything to you. That’s the theory anyway, and it seems to work pretty good.

Note: the program is free but limited to one email account.

Jenny asks…

email marketing (buying an email list)?

Hi, I realize that buying an email list is not very ethical; my question is: is that illegal, too? Thank you!

Jere answers:

That depends on where you are, of course, and you should consult local authorities on the matter. In the US, the CAN SPAM Act (take a look at http://business.ftc.gov/documents/bus61-can-spam-act-compliance-guide-business for more information on CAN SPAM compliance) does regulate the sending of unwanted email.

Another point of legal concern is the vendor themselves. Aside from the legality of buying lists in the first place, the list may have been originally been obtained through illegal or misleading means. Obviously, buying stolen data is not a wise legal move.

Putting aside the law and even ethics for a moment, I’d like to make a couple points about buying lists from a purely mercenary, business-first viewpoint. A purchased list won’t know who you are, or why you’re contacting them. This means that at best, they’ll simply think your message is just one more piece of spam and ignore or delete it. At worst, they could report you as a spammer, which can lead to action taken against you by actual ISPs like Google, Yahoo, or Hotmail. You don’t want to be on the mail client’s bad side if you plan to communicate with people via email.

On the other hand, growing a list based on sign ups on your website, or even collecting subscribers’ email addresses in person at your storefront, trade show, or business meeting can give you a healthy, active list. Moreover, it will give you a list that is interested in what you have to say, and is a lot more likely to actually read your email.

Hope this helps,
Nick Moore

Your Questions About The Real Biz

Richard asks…

Changing music from real player to mp3?

Hi there
My stored music has somehow went to real player when they were all mp3 tracks yesterday, how do I change the tracks back to mp3

thanks

Jere answers:

You can solve this by using a Real-to-MP3 converter like http://www.mp3-converter.biz/rm-to-mp3-converter-directory/
good luck !

Carol asks…

Is the website discyou.biz legit?

Discyou.biz has dvd series at more than 50% less than all other websites. Is that website a legit website with real dvd series?

Jere answers:

I have purchased one set of dvd from this website half a year ago ,but at that time it’s not named as discyou.biz ,it is called discyou.com ,the dvds in there is very reasonable ,cheap ,quality good ,and I think it a legit website ,worth to try !

Lizzie asks…

Internet Biz vs Traditional Biz?

These are my thoughts…

Internet biz will never replace traditional biz, I was fooled by other internet success story… everyone keep secret…

I waste too much time trying to succeed internet biz, it is way too complicated, and costly.

Now I go back to real world, internet is just illusion…

Jere answers:

I am sorry that you had such a bad experience but not everyone fails at their business. That is an unrealistic comment. That is like saying if person A fails at being a doctor, that it is plain fruitless for anyone else to bother trying and that being a doctor isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. It is a very bias opinion with no real justification. Millions have found success online and millions have found success offline (the traditional you are talking about).

It is a matter of finding the right fit for yourself and more importantly, something that works.

Mandy asks…

HELP!!! fanmail.biz?

fanmail.biz.com what do you have to send i want to send a photo for bob saget to sign but do i have to send 2 envelops? what is a sase they always talk about that on the website. is this a accurate website do you actually get an autograph back? have you used it before what were your results?

Jere answers:

Alright.
1. You write a letter.
2. You need to have your REAL envelope; let’s call this envelope 1.
3. You also need another envelope that has YOUR address on it. “SASE” stands for “Self-Addressed Stamped Envelope”. Let’s call this envelope 2.
Only use stamps if the person you’re sending it to lives in the same country as you.
4. If the person doesn’t live in the same country as you, include IRC (International Reply Coupons). These are coupons so that the celebrity doesn’t have to pay for the postage.
5. Fold envelope 2 in half and put it in envelope 1.
6. Include a picture for the person to sign that will fit in the envelope.

Tip: The most preferable envelope size is A5.

If you need anymore help, feel free to email me. I’ve sent quite a few fanmail with the help of famail.biz.

Good luck!

Edit: I’ve sent fanmail to the following people…
Robert Pattinson (“Edward Cullen”)
Katie Leung (Cho Chang in Harry Potter)
Natalia Tena (Tonks in Harry Potter)
Steve Carell
Charlie Cox (Tristan from Stardust)
Roger Federer
Dakota Fanning

I’ve received replies from:
Robert Pattinson
Natalie Tena (She also wrote me a letter. It was very sweet!)
Roger Federer (My favourite success)
Charlie Cox (He signed my 2 pictures and signed his own!)

I’ve used the addresses from fanmail.biz for all of my fanmail. It’s a very useful site.

Chris asks…

Your Questions About Business Online Courses

Joseph asks…

I live in Greenville, SC and want to get a BA degree in business management – What school options do I have?

I’ll be getting my AAS degree in business systems administration from ECPI in November, and I’d like to get a BA degree in business management after that. The only thing I can find is online courses, and I don’t want to do online college. Does anyone know what colleges are around here that offer that degree?

Thanks!
Clemson would be great, but it’s over 40 miles away.

Jere answers:

How about Clemson?

William asks…

When should I start online classes during my Navy career?

So Ive been in the Navy since aug09.. Im thinking Im only going to be doing four years since Ive really not imaging retiring in this. and I want to make a plan for my career ( nursing or business) should I wait till like two years left in the Navy to start online courses or should I begin now?

Jere answers:

If you have the time.. START NOW.. Tuition assistance alone can help knock out all your core requirements. You get $4500 a year towards education while AD.. Save your GI Bill for after you get out.

Sandra asks…

What online nail courses are recognised?

Wondering which online course are actually recognised by employers, potential customers etc. I have heard about a few online courses that arent recognised and people end up doing another course to be able to get in mployment or to start their own little business.
Thanks in advance x

Jere answers:

In the UK there is no regulation for the beauty business which means anyone can set up with NO qualifications. Depends if you want to work within a business what they will ask for, but if you want to set up on your own you need nothing. You do need Insurance though.

Daniel asks…

What is the best accredited online college for active duty military personnel?

I plan on taking some online courses while im on active duty to earn my degrees in business/HR while i am on active duty for the U.S. NAVY. I just want to know which is the best/popular online college program. im sort of leaning towards The University of Phoenix, but then i just found out about Excelsior college which looks also good. Are there any others that are better for the working sailor?

Jere answers:

Just to let you know, most employers ARE NOT impressed with University of Phoenix degrees or really any degree from an “online university”. Your best bet, if you can, is to enroll in a regular college with a physical address and then take their classes online. Good luck!

Richard asks…

What is the best site to take the online driver education course?

I need the certificate of completion of driver education. What site can I trust that offers approved online courses with the lowest price?

Jere answers:

I would definitely recommend you to take the online driver education course at www.driveredtogo.com. I took the course from that site, which consists of chapters and multiple-choice questions at the end of each chapter to assess your understanding of the chapter. At the end of the course, you will take the final exam, which is also multiple-choice questions, but you don’t have to worry about failing because you will be given the chance to retake it if you failed. I neither failed a quiz nor the final exam, though, because it really isn’t that hard. Once you passed the final exam, your certificate of completion should be mailed to you within five business days. I got mine in about a week. It cost me $17.50 and a few more dollars for shipping.

Your Questions About Internet Business Phone Service

Susan asks…

Do I need to unlock my iPhone 5 to use it in Japan with a rental sim card?

I am having a business trip to Japan soon for around a month and I wonder if I can use my iPhone 5 there with the rental sim card from Softbank without unlocking the phone. Please share with me any info regarding using iPhone overseas. Or if you have any other options for cell phone/internet service. Thanks!

Jere answers:

It depends on how and when you got your iPhone 5. But you do need your iPhone 5 unlocked to use the SIM of another carrier.

AT&T will unlock your iPhone after 1 year. You call them up, and they unlock. If you have a Sprint or Verizon iPhone, it’s already unlocked, so you don’t need to go through the process.

Of course, if you paid a premium to get an unlocked AT&T phone, you don’t need to unlock something that already is, but you probably know it’s unlocked if that were the case.

William asks…

What is the worst customer service you have ever had?

I am in the customer service business and I get amazed at some of the stuff other people do and get away with. Just curious what was the worst customer experience you have ever had?

Jere answers:

With Washington Mutual Bank, there was a error, next thing I know my house is in foreclosure. Tried to access the web site, was blocked, Tried calling the 800 # after 2 times was blocked, called from my cell phone 2 times was blocked. The moment my account # was spoken, so sorry screw you. Went to the Washington Mutual Bank, took the lady 1 and half hours to get through to somebody, was hung up on twice. Who knows where to call? The 800 # is the only available # given. Work with you, don’t want to foreclose,, ya right,,, Went around and around with an operator that yelled so loudly at me the lady at the next desk heard her. Ask to speak to a supervisor, God forbid, Must of given lessons to the other one. Bank statements in my hand showing all payments, didn’t have a thing to discuss with me, nothing further, Enjoy my last night in my house, get packing… Then hung up the phone on me. Did get her name….haha made her repeat it and spell it for me 9 times. 5 minutes to 5:00 now what learned 10 days before hand my house was being auctioned off in two days. I work a forty hour week. This was my day off spent all day on not my phone, just to be nowhere, 7,800 dollars was expected no ifs, ands, or buts. Paid housepayments for 8 years never even late. Oh, was asked why it took me four days to lie around and do nothing about my situation, forget the arguing or should I say screaming….. They yelled louder and was ruder than I had been taught. Saved my house, why? Twice the amount of money on a 38,000$ loan is so much nicer than just paying it once with 10% interest. Clerical error…. 2 months ago, seemed to be a clitch. Still waiting for itemized list of funds paid to them. Never have received a statement telling me when my next housepayment was due, I think I paid up to July. 2 months ahead???? Mmmmph !!sTILL am waiting for an acknowledgement of received funds, can’t call them still blocked on phone and internet, have to go back to work now, maybe my bank will refund me the six dollars it cost to get copies of bank statements, ya think? Did turn her into the Better B.B. An operator on a different coast seemed to be in disbelief, why? Did she really say that to you? Recorded not on my end……. Operator floor supervisor I’ve got your #………..

What cell phones & services allow the use of the phone as a broadband adapter?

I’m looking for a cell phone provider and device that will allow me to hook it up to the laptop so I can go on the internet. There are limited options in terms of wired internet so I have to rely on wireless since the area I’m living in won’t get a signal unless it’s near a window and there are no areas where I can get broadband on the bay in the base.

Jere answers:

Right now, i am using the verizon air card. I pay $60.++ for an unlimited data plan.

As far as i know verizon’s and sprint’s technology (ev-do) are way better than at&t and tmobile’s

i don’t know if you are familiar with pc cards, but the one that i am using is the USB version of it. So i can also use it for my desktop.

So far so good, i have been using it for business presentations and it is fast enough to serve its purpose. But don’t expect it to be as fast as cable internet.

Jenny asks…

What is a good basic laptop and wireless internet service to get for my first year in college?

I am starting college in the fall and need a laptop and internet however, I have no idea what to get laptop wise and I have no clue of what I need internet wise. I am going to be a business major so I really don’t need anything to creative. Please help.

Jere answers:

If you are into movies and DVD burning, HP and Compaq computers are definitely your ticket. All HP and Compaq computers have a technology called light scribe. Light scribe allows you to make custom labels using your drives laser. You can buy these light scribe DVDs right at Best Buy. You burn what ever you want to burn as usual. Then you flip the disc over and create a label using the included light scribe control panel or Roxio Express Labeler.

For the HP line, it has light scribe as well, and it also has Quick Play. This Quick Play program allows you to watch movies without loading Vista. This saves 25% of battery power.

If you truly are looking for wireless Internet, you have 2 options:
WiMax
Cellular

WiMax is faster, but it is limited to within a city or a few cities. Just do a google search for wimax state where state is the sate you live in. A list of wimax providers should come up.

Cellular can pretty much be used where ever you can use your cell phone. You can still get some pretty good speeds.

If you just want wireless in your home, just get cable or DSL. You would then have to get a wireless router. Make sure you enable the security properly on your wireless router. I can’t tell you how many people do enable security, but I can still break into their wireless if I wanted to. You should use WPA2 authentication.

A much simpler technology to setup is powerline. You don’t have to worry about the security issues that wireless has. Check it out at http://www.cnet.com/4520-7390_1-6274537-3.html?tag=tab

Hey there,

No matter how bad the economy gets, everyone will still use some sort of telecom service. Earn residual income and weather economic storms by marketing services everyone already uses (phone, Internet,Wireless,Satellite TV), and cutting edge technology that will be in millions of households over the next few years (digital phone service-VoIP).

We missed out on other great innovations (that we now take for granted) such as the automobile, telephone, radio, television, computer, and even the Internet. Definitely worth checking out!

Your Questions About Direct Marketing Definition

Paul asks…

What is the best and easiest way to invest?

Hello Hello,

At the end of each month I have a couple hundred to spare and savings accounts right now suck big time.

Who is a good agency to work through to do some middle and long term investing?

Like I said I don’t have a lot, but I would really like to start a portfolio.

I already own a couple of savings bonds, and I have an established savings account.

I’d just like to do more.

Thank you much

Jere answers:

First decide on a portfolio balance. Essentially this is the proportion of your portfolio that is placed at risk (invested in stocks) versus not placed at risk (invested in bonds and cash equivalents). A fixed proportion allows you to periodically rebalance the portfolio back to the target proportions in order to benefit from bargain prices when the market drops or to lock in profit when the market rises effectively buying low and selling high in much the same way that dollar cost averaging buys more when low and buys less when high. Mind you bonds are long term investments so they may not have the liquidity when it’s the most advantageous for you to rebalance even laddering the bonds may not allow you the flexibility to take advantage of a market crash so apply for margin on your account, that way when the opportunity arises due to a market downturn, you can purchase stocks at bargain prices to rebalance the portfolio without have to sell the bonds right away and simply allow attrition in the bond ladder to catch up with the margin over time. You should always try to not hold a position with your margin, it’s greatest value is providing you with liquidity so you should never use margin just to leverage a buy and hold strategy but rather keep it available instead of used.

Most of the discount brokers provide a reasonable degree of service, established ones such as Fidelity are certainly reliable but these days even your banks can offer you direct investing accounts. Just keep in mind that they will try to push their own high load mutual funds on you, often with an outrageous front or back end load. My parents were sold a fund with a 6% backend load before I could point out that a 1% load would be considered extravagant. Companies like Vanguard specializes in no load and low fee mutual funds. For the least amount of fuss, you can go with an index fund, by definition they will beat half the investors out there and they have the lowest fees as there’s really nothing to do in terms of fund management. There’s no need to go with a bank’s fund that offers management by anonymous bank employees for an extravagant fee when a low cost index fund will beat half the professional fund managers out there and certainly the inexperienced unknowns that the banks would be using. But investing through you bank may be convenient if it’s the bank where your savings accounts are.

Linda asks…

What is database marketing?

Jere answers:

It is a form of direct mail marketing where the marketers use databases to gather customer information and slice and dice that information to do market segmentation. With database marketing, data is key — and how the marketer applies that data to result in a profitable customer relationship

Here’s a good definition of database marketing http://searchcrm.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid11_gci939072,00.html

————————————–
– Database marketing is a systematic approach to the gathering, consolidation, and processing of consumer data (both for customers and potential customers) that is maintained in a company’s databases. Although databases have been used for customer data in traditional marketing for a long time, the database marketing approach is differentiated by the fact that much more consumer data is maintained, and that the data is processed and used in new and more sophisticated ways. Among other things, marketers use the data to learn more about customers, select target markets for specific campaigns (through customer segmentation), compare customers’ value to the company, and provide more specialized offerings for customers.

Mark asks…

Why has the ICO stopped regulating Bluetooth marketing?

This has to do with the Information Commissioner’s decision to exclude bluetooth marketing from its guidance on The Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations 2003

Jere answers:

Both the Direct Marketing Association (DMA-UK ) and the Mobile Marketing Association (MMA) are strong advocates of permission based marketing. Even the ICO states that, legislative definitions notwithstanding, their good practice advice for any type of marketing would be to avoid sending people marketing they do not want. If you read the websites and marketing collateral from Bluetooth marketing companies they also will assert their commitment to permission based marketing. So – what’s the problem?

When a consumer walks by a Bluetooth enabled poster their phone will buzz or beep and display a message, “Do you want to receive content from xxx?” It is this invitation message which is the subject of much discussion and debate. Should the consumer have given their opt-in permission before receiving this invitation? Both the DMA and the MMA say, “Yes.” – Bluetooth marketing companies say “No.”.

Many Bluetooth marketing companies assert that if your phone has Bluetooth turned on and visible then you have given an implied consent to receiving contact from them. The counter argument states that just because your have a public listing in a telephone directory it can not be implied that you wish to receive telemarketing sales calls

Marketing management is a business discipline which is focused on the practical application of marketing techniques and the management of a firm’s marketing resources and activities. Rapidly emerging forces of globalization have compelled firms to market beyond the borders of their home country making International marketing highly significant and an integral part of a firm’s marketing strategy.[1] Marketing managers are often responsible for influencing the level, timing, and composition of customer demand accepted definition of the term. In part, this is because the role of a marketing manager can vary significantly based on a business’ size, corporate culture, and industry context. For example, in a large consumer products company, the marketing manager may act as the overall general manager of his or her assigned product [2] To create an effective, cost-efficient Marketing management strategy, firms must possess a detailed, objective understanding of their own business and the market in which they operate.[3] In analyzing these issues, the discipline of marketing management often overlaps with the related discipline of strategic planning.

Thomas asks…

which is the relationship between direct marketing and customer relationship management?

Jere answers:

One way of thinking about this question is to consider direct marketing (“DM”) a precursor to customer relationship management (“CRM”). Direct marketing techniques – such as a postcard delivered by postal mail with an specific offer – are used to get a prospect to respond and either demonstrate interest in a product/offering or make a purchase.

Once a target demonstrates interest, they often get categorized differently (i.e., they are considered higher value than someone that hasn’t demonstrated interest) and their ongoing management can be considered “CRM” – , which is the process of nurturing the relationship over time. Sales/marketing executives use the term CRM to describe the system or process employed to communicate and interact with customers and prospects over time.

All that said, there is overlap between what the marketplace would consider “direct marketing” and “customer relationship management”, so a precise definition or explanation doesn’t truly exist, as the understanding of the terms are subjective.

Your Questions About How To Do Business Online

Daniel asks…

I want to start a business of my own online which type of business is the easiest to profit from?

I am trying to start a business online and make it profitable enough to then make a storefront what is the most profitable online business?

Jere answers:

Nancy asks…

What would I need to do to start this online business?

I want to start a consulting business online, and know I need a page, a ‘www’ address
(called ‘url’?), and don’t know if I need more than this. Anyone know about this?

Jere answers:

Are you going to use your own domain or are you going to use a free website domain via. Website hosting site. It would help if you wrote a quick business plan to help motivate yourself if you feel like quitting! If you don’t know what you are doing you should either hire a professional to build your website or take some lessons on the Internet or in person! I hope this was enough information, if you need any more information feel free to email me! =)

Laura asks…

What is the suggested period of time to hold an online auction for?

Im starting my own business online, and i am wondering what the ideal amount of time would be for having an auction.

Im thinking between 5 & 7 days….

Any ideas what the optimum is?

Thanks!

Jere answers:

It depends on what you’re selling.
If you have an item that’s quite rare — Where yours may be the only one on eBay a 10 auction wuld be in order. The longer the auction the more people see it.

Everything else I use 7 day auctions.

Auctions that end on Sunday between 6-9pm do best for me.

Sandra asks…

How can I build my Avon business online?

I am currently an Avon Independent Sales Rep. I have no recruits and my sales are not where I would like them to be. I am currently enrolled as an eRep. What I would like to know is, is there a way I can build my business strictly online. I would prefer to not have to travel door to door and burn gas riding around town. I want to build both my customer base and my recruits and achieve sales leadership. Can I build a business strictly online?

Jere answers:

The MLM business model Avon uses made more sense when it was conceived in the days before an infinite number of advertising channels were available, when a local door to door sales rep, answering to a regional manager were necessary.

You would probably have to do some very creative marketing to make online sales, writing original beauty, cosmetics, lifestyle pieces once or twice a week on a site using a free blog host like Google’s Blogger.com might earn search engine ranking, which would attract a following that you could soft sell, being active on fashion oriented forums might be helpful, you could setup a free Facebook Fan Page as well, (you should not do business on your personal Facebook page, just mention your resume there)

Trying to compete with the throng of reps for the same internet space may simply be impractical, I did a little research to get a feel for how much competition there may actually be:

While the Avon parent site has a remarkable 176,000 pages of catalog pages, product reviews, etc.

Avonrepresentative.com where the reps pages are hosted, has some 550,000 pages

I don’t know if the actual number of representative is commonly known. To get an ideaa of the amount of competition a looked at the number of pages on avonrepresentative.com who’s introductions mentions the state they operate in include:

CA 37,400
TX 31,900
NY 25,900
OH 17,200
GA 16,100
NJ 12,600
AL 7,810
MN 5,480
UT 3,350
DE 2,350

Actually, professional internet marketers would not bother with Avon, they could find better paying results for a similar effort without the throng of competing Avon reps., the hot area for marketers are CPA (Cost Per Action) offers in which you are paid a finders fee for delivering a lead, in some cases someone signing up for free trials, (CPA marketing is not where online marketers typically start, you have to pass a phone interview regarding your legitimacy and marketing skills to get into these programs)

(Wanted to mention an example of alternative, more modern internet specific sales affiliate systems worth investigating.)

JuSome recentf current top paying CPA offers in this area:

Lauren Hutton Face Disc $ 45.00 Sale
Luminess Air – Airbrush Cosmetics – 30 Day Trial Offer $ 33.00 Lead
Purity Mineral Makeup $ 29.00 Lead
Sheer Cover $ 17.00 Lead
Magic Minerals – Self Correcting Makeup Powder AsSeenOnTV 2011 $ 6.00 Sale
CosmeticsCentre – Free Makeup & Cosmetics Kit – United Kingdom $ 1.05 Lead

A properly designed fashion and beauty sort of site might be able to switch promotion from Avon to one of the many other affiliate programs on the web, should Avon not prove to pay off. Keeping your online asset development more general in nature, firstly designed to attract visitors will make it more suitable for switching ‘sponsors’

Thomas asks…

How do I get a letter of recommendation for grad school if I go to school online?

I’m doing my bachelors in business online through a LEGIT university. Nothing like University of Phoenix or anything like that. Anyway, how do I ask for a letter of recommendation for me graduate school application if I haven’t actually met any of my professors?
True, thank you for your answer.

Jere answers:

If it’s legit you should’ve had extensive one on one with your profs through email exchange. I know with my legit online classes I was communicating back and forth with the prof several times a week, so they knew who I was even though I never met them in person.

How to setup and email database for my website?

OK… I set up a email form and a confirmation page. Then sent a test email. It worked, however, when I went to view it there was some sort of numeric code. What is this? What is it used for? And, the most important question…. NOW WHAT? Where and how do I store these emails into a database for use in a email marketing pgrm? Thanks.

Jere answers:

I am not exactly clear on what you are attempting to do, but it sounds as though you are attempting to create a web form that can collect email addresses. You then want these email addresses to be populated in a database that you can use for email campaigns. Is this correct?

If this is the case I think an integrated database solution would work best for you. You might want to check out our online database program, TrackVia –
http://www.trackvia.com

With our program you can easily create a web form that matches the look and feel of your web site and all submissions will be automatically populated in a TrackVia database. You can then use our database solution to send an email campaign to those email addresses you have collected from your web form.

We have a free 14 day trial with support included if you’d like to try out our program. If you do, let me know how it goes.

Ok i’ve just started up my own business and i’m looking into email marketing. Can i email a brochure to any business without their permision or is that classed as spam?

Can i get in trouble for this if it is spam?

Thanks

Of course. But you’d better start email marketing campaign with permission. The most important is you must choose a professional email marketing service provider, which has highly email delivery.
My colleague had chosen iKode newsletter server and it works very well. Maybe you can have a try.

Your Questions About Direct Marketing Strategies

David asks…

I need help with life insurance strategies: Which market should I target and which products should I sell?

I’m starting out as a life insurance salesman. I wish to use my time efficiently. Therefore, I need help to target the right demographic market and life insurance products for this market.

For example, I could target executives making over $100,000 per year, and the product is a combination term insurance with some UL. The term part goes to retirement, and the smaller UL part continues until death.

Any brilliant ideas would be helpful.

Jere answers:

I would suggest keeping it simple, executives making 100K
per year are going to be hard to get a hold of. I would suggest using an Internet based lead source where prospects have requested life quotes. Most of these will be term sales. But the key to success is volume.

I have also used a direct mail program to new mortgage holders. Out of 1,000 mailers you can expect back between 20 and 60 responses. You should be able to close 20-30%. With practice and training these types of leads can be closed over the phone and written through the mail.

If your not captive I can refer you to a great life brokerage firm, just let me know.

Laura asks…

How does the stock market work?

I’m a student, and I know very little about the way the stock market works. Can someone please explain to me what it is and how it works? Thanks in advance.

Jere answers:

Companies who need to raise money sell “shares” or partial ownership interest in their company to investors. These shares are called Stock. When you own a companies stock, you own part of the company.

Shares of stock are bought and sold between investors. That process is the basic function of the stock market- it is a place where stockholders trade with one another. Some are huge and hold billions of dollars in stock. Some are quite small, and may have only $1000.00 total invested. Some of the big ones, like Warren Buffett started as small ones but learned quickly and acted wisely.

The prices are determined by what people are willing to pay to buy a given stock, and what someone who owns it is willing to sell for, The price of the stock has no direct connection to the condition or profits of the company itself. When people believe a company will grow or is doing well, the price usually rises because more people want to own it. That works both ways of course.

The market has become global and very complex. While the basic function is the same, there are a multitude of ways in which those buys and sells take place, The management of these transactions is done by Brokerages, it is not unlike a huge auction where all stocks are for sale at the same time.

People make money when they are wise enough to buy the right stock at the right time, and sell it in the same way.

This involves understanding not only the company behind the stock, but the economy and the nature of emotion and investor perception and confidence.

It’s not a simple thing. Good investors are always learning and always revising strategy to keep up with conditions. Many people have become wealthy through investing. It can be done almost like a hobby, taking little time. While they are working at their normal occupation, the money they have invested is working for them too. As that value accumulates, the growth goes up with it. Thus a small start can be a fortune in 10-20 years if managed well.

Hope that helps…

Donna asks…

What are some ideas for a small business for 1st time business owners?

I live in South Florida and have a background in customer service, office, and legal work. I would prefer not to have direct contact with customers. I would like to start a business where I can bring home at least $3,500 a month. This is after paying taxes and business expenses.

I know that there are an innumerable types of businesses, but I would like some ideas. Thanks!

Jere answers:

Some major things you need to start a small business are:

1. A product/service that is of high-quality for the value customers will be willing to pay; also, your product needs to fulfill consumers needs in your target market. As the popularity of social networking sites as a form of business marketing increases, so too will the need for “experts” in this field. Would you consider yourself an expert in social networking?

2. A business plan- writing down your business’s purpose, product, customers, short-term & long-term goals, etc. Helps move ideas into tangible actions.

3. Marketing strategy- the best form of marketing is positive word-of-mouth. Create for your customers a quality product at a reasonable value or provide them with outstanding service, so that they will have nothing but good things to say about your business to their friends & family. Another way to market a young business is through the Internet, where it is cheaper & more efficient to market in than traditional marketing through newspapers & commercials. Create a Facebook page for your business to increase awareness and also showcase your talents to prospective clients. Also, you should list your business (when you begin one) online, specifically on websites that direct users to local businesses in their area like zipzoom.com. If you haven’t heard of zipzoom.com before, it is an online shopping website where users/customers can search for local businesses that offer products and services ranging from babysitters to electricians to flowers. Users can communicate directly with businesses they choose to buy services/products from after getting recommendations from zipzoom.com, and from there, your business can gain business. Right now, zipzoom.com is doing a special promotion for vendors who are interested: register as a vendor for free. It’s a good option for those who are on a tight budget but still need exposure to grow their business. If this is something that appeals to you, you should just try it out and see what happens because there is no obligation to sign up.

4. Financing- In order to start a small business, you need to be able to invest money into it. It seems like you are willing to invest a lot of money into the opening of your business, but just remember that it will be easier to start out small than go all out for your new business.

In order to be successful, you need to be willing to put a lot of time, energy & money into the growth of your business, especially in the beginning stages. I hope this information helps. Good luck on your business ventures!

John asks…

Do I need a marketing consultant to launch my new business?

I am creating a new web-based business and I have no experience in launching it. Before I hire any SEO (search Engine Optimization) experts, PR-persons, should I get someone with experience draft out a strategy? It will cost more money but I want to do it the right way…. I am just a start-up with limited funds.
This site is a social media site, similar to a dating site.

Jere answers:

If you have limited funds think twice before you go ahead and hire somebody.

I would rather buy direct services from freelancers, like SEO packages from gig based websites like http://www.seoclerks.com/ where freelance sellers advertise their stuff.
Buy services you think will help at this moment in time, look for the gigs with positive reviews and also don’t hesitate to contact freelancers and explain them what you need.

I’ve found that you can get a much better deal this way, sellers usually want to get you as a buyer and they’ll do anything to make you happy so find someone that haves experience and work out a deal.

I was wondering if there was a website that showed the approximate value and details of a business if you type in the name or address?

Similar to Zillow for homes, but for businesses? Thanks.
Also, maybe a website that has a listing of a wide variety of businesses for sale. Thanks.

Betty asks…

How much should I invest in the Real Estate and Construction Business?

I want to locate my business in Delhi&NCR

Jere answers:

There are 2 ways to invest in real estate and construction biz

1)You directly invest and purchase land ,apartments etc …which is not every-bodies cup of tea. But if you can , I would say that’s a great business. See Donald Trump ,he has made an empire out of real estate business. DLF etc…

2)There are lot of companies which are listed in BSE and NSE which deal in real estate. You can invest in them and reap the benefits. This is less risky and of course less rewarding.

Note : I am no expert in investment , this is just plain advice and this is what I would do if I could.

Your Questions About Internet Marketing Inc

Mandy asks…

Is there a good and reliable way to make money at home?

I am a stay @ home mom, but I want to make extra money. I have read up on jobs at home on the internet, but it’s hard to believe.

Jere answers:

My husband and I started our home based business over six years ago. We both work out of our home around our children’s school and sports activities. We got involved in an International telecommunications service provider that was started back in 1993. It’s a 15 year old, world wide company that’s in numerous countries. It’s the largest direct selling telecommunications service provider in the world. With headquarters in Farmington Hills, Michigan, Charlotte, Amsterdam, Sydney and Montreal.
They have been featured in several magazines like USA Today, Success, Fortune etc. Inc 500 rated them the 22nd fastest growing company in revenue in it’s first five years. They are registered with the BBB as well.
They market in services people use every day and pay for anyway. Services like Local and Long Distance telephones, Internet, Digital, video phones, Satellite TV, and all the major cellular phone companies like T-Mobile, Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, Nextell, Altell etc with the latest plans and most popular equipment. You help put them on a new 2 year contract plan or upgrading and extending an existing contracts through all the major cellular phone providers. You also help them save money on all their other telecommunication needs as well as Satellite TV. Every single month these people pay their bills, you make a percentage over and over again each month.
How many people do you know, or know of around the world that uses one or more of these services or products? . A lot of money involved in this industry.

There’s not much difference in the time it takes to build a business vs. The time you spend working either a part time or full time job. If you calculate the hours you put into working for someone else, the pay you receive compared to working the same amount of time in your own business and how much more you would be making, it makes more since to have your own businesses. Rather it’s a home based business, or a traditional store front business.
To me, having a home based business is economically better. It costs less to start up, and you don’t have all the over head expenses as traditional businesses do. Just about everything in your own home is a tax write off. Most home based business cost under $500. Plus you have the same opportunity to make the same amount of money, higher profit then you would in a traditional business.
If you put in the same amount of time you would at your normal job, it won’t take you that long to build a business up and make a sufficient amount of income. About the same amount of time for your first check from your ordinary job, which is about two to four weeks, depending on if the company you work for has this waiting period that a lot of them do, where you actually work 3 to 4 weeks before getting paid. It usually takes about two to four weeks to start bringing in an average income. Four to six weeks to increase that. (I don’t know any “job” that gives you pay raises this quickly), and about three to six months to be self sufficient. Again, this is based on the effort and time you put into it.
Most people start their business on the side if they don’t have a cushion to live on while they build their business because they have full time jobs and run their business on the side. When their business reaches the income level they desire, they put their normal jobs down and continue with just their business’s income.

I don’t have much to go on with what your interests are. So I can only try and help you out by refering you over to a few different businesses to take a look at. I’ll tell you what my husband and I have had and enjoy doing for over six years now. I can also refer you over to my blog on my 360 yahoo page on “home based businesses” There are over half a dozen different ones to take a look at for more ideas.

I see a lot of people asking questions on survey oppotunities as well as answers for surveys. Survey’s require a lot of time, and you won’t make what they claim you will. A few friends of mine put a bunch of survey’s sites to a test to see if they really work. Different sites such as Survey Savvy, Haris Poll Online, Greenfield Online, Opinion Outpost,Survey Spot
Buzzback, NPD Online, Lightspeed Panel,Your2Cents, Project Payday and many others. (14 a peice, different sites-do the math on how many we went through, including the ones you had to pay to get into.) We spent six months on these sites. They’re not anything what people say they are. They are fun and you do receive free items. They’re not “scams” but I just want you to know that there’s more to them then what your being led to beleive. Yes they are easy to do, but very time consuming.
You can make some money, however the time required in doing survey’s is more then you think when you add it all together. Plan on spending 8 to 10 hours a day and average out at minimum wage. Sometimes you will hit good surveys that will pay you a lot, but what’s required to get that is a lot too. In calculating what you got paid and the time involved in these higher paying, still averages out to minimum wage, and usually less. It’s a psychological thing because the time is spread out on these, so it doesn’t seem to be long. But we did the documentations and figured the time vs money.

Here’s how the survey’s work. You have to spend aprox 10 to 15 minutes per each site to register. (this is non paid) Then you’ll start receiving emails for surveys. Each survey you have to complete a 15 to 20 minute pre-qualifying survey. (you dont get paid for this) Then if you do qualify for a survey (which majority of the ones you don’t qualify for. So you’ve wasted this 15 to 20 minutes and sometimes longer of non paid time.) Then if you don’t qualify for one, they offer another and you have to do the same thing, and the same thing happens.) You waste approx 45 minutes to an hour until you finally qualify for a survey. You take a 30 to 45 minute survey and make under $10. Normally it’s $1 to $3 a survey that they claim takes 15 minutes. That’s not including the 15 minute prequalifying survey. So you’ve now spent thirty minutes and made $3. And the process between each of the survey sites is the same. So you can pretty much do the math. It averages out to be between $2 to $6 an hour. Sometimes you do come across a survey that will pay you $25 to $75 a survey.

Here’s how they work. It could be a telephone survey or a internet survey. You get the prequalifying part of 10 to 20 minutes then if you qualify for it another 15 to 30 minute survey or a telephone survey about the product your about to try to see if you qualify to try it. Even though you took a 10 to 20 minute “prequalifying survey” that said you qualify for. When you qualify for it, they send you a product out to try for 7 to 10 days and you do some daily documentations on it. Depending on what the product is and the documentations it’s usually 2 – 15 minutes (you got a free product to use around the house, this is a good part of it) after trying the product out you have to complete another survey that takes between 15 to 30 minutes to do. Now you do the calculations on that. You don’t get as many of these types of survey’s. They use the hype on getting paid $25 to $75 dollars for 15 minute surveys. (notice the plural in “surveys”. What they don’t tell you is that there is more then one survey involved in these. Now calculate from your prequalifying survey to the next pre-qualifying survey from the company carrying the product, to the trial and documentations, to the last survey on these products. Then you receive a check four weeks to six weeks later.
Another way to earn money on survey sites, is to refer people over to the sites. Some survey sites will give you a percentage on what the people you refer buy off the sites as they get a percentage back off of what they buy. It’s about 1% or less. You either get a lot of points for this that when you reach a curtain amount of points you can exchange it for cash or prizes. (Cash amount is usually $30 before you can cash out- do the math on how many pre-qualifying surveys and the surveys you get, the time involved etc this is what it takes to earn the $30) Other survey sites you complete shorter surveys (5 to 15 minutes) and your entered into sweepsteaks or lottery things for prizes or money.
Okay, I’m starting to write a book. I can go on about all the other types of survey’s available and what was in volved in that if you’d like me to elaberate on it.

I do survey’s because it does help the marketing on different products and they do use the opinions of what things look like and what not. So I do it for the principle of the matter.

A home based “job” is not going to bring you a sufficient amount of income. You will only be paid minimum wage. Most companies don’t feel they need to pay anyone more then that because their gas cost is eliminated. What people don’t realize, what about your spouse? Do they still have to drive to work every day? Grocery shopping, outings, and things like that are still going to cost gas. If your married and you have a minimum waged job, pretty much your entire pay check will be going to your spouse’s gas tank with the gas prices these days. Then you still have the normal bills you need to pay each month as well, food, utilities, mortgage (rent for most people). Think about how much money you spend in that alone? If you need more income, I don’t see how a minimum wage home “job” is going to cut it then.
If you really want to work from home, and want to make a sufficient amount of income, then I suggest you start your own home based business.

I hope this helps you with your search on making money from home.

Charles asks…

How can I get around age discrimination, particulary with finding a job?

I retired from my 31 year career in computer sales and engineering and find that age has kept me out on the outside of the job market. I am doing real estate sales but don’t really like it so much. I can’t see how all of us are supposed to work until a ripe old age when no one wants anyone over 48.

William asks…

How do you find the correct company to invest in?

I listen to CNBC and they talk about all these companies in multi-year highs with great margins, valuations, strong balance sheets, their products/services are highly in demand. How do i find these companies early before they ever get this huge? One company in particular 3D systems (DDD) and NetSuite Inc (N) these are not exactly the most popular name companies. Yet there were early regular joe investors in them 2-3 years ago that caught this amazing upside of a profit. How do i know where to research and find the next DDD and N’s of the stock market that’ll be successful in a few years? Do you just listen to Jim Cramer then research a company? Do you just accidental stumble across a company on the internet and start research if it’s any good? How do you know where to start to look for future investments?

Jere answers:

Study the company valuation. I know that I may sound like a broken record but I strongly suggest that you get your self a Roth IRA account asap, if you do not have one. You can never go wrong with investing and saving for your future. You could be a millionaire before you reach your retirement age so if you do not have a Roth IRA than get started with the Roth IRA account by contacting T-Rowe Price or Fidelity. Yesterday is History, Tomorrow is a mystery, its all about what you do in the moment. You can get started today. It is suggested that you pick the Roth IRA target year fund set for the age 65.

https://www.fidelity.com/
https://investor.vanguard.com/corporate-…

Get the Roth Account first than branch out into other investment, once you study and learn about investments. The target year account would adjust on its own. Invest in yourself first. Without knowledge, you have nothing. Most beginners think investing is about money and how much profit they can make. The process of investing is about risk, strategy, probability, and management.Take Care

Donna asks…

Would I need to register as a business to sell my website services online?

Ok, basically, I am a novice web-designer, and i was looking to start up a website.
On the website people could contact me, and then they could buy my services, which would be setting up a website for the needs, and then installing my selected software, and also designing images for the website.
I ‘NEED’ to know wether i’d have to register as a business or wether is fine and ‘LEGAL’ to sell my services online as a project, please reply asap,
cheers,
mitchell

Jere answers:

I am in a similar business selling web based services, building web sites and doing SEO for companies. I elected to get a business license in my town. It is $100 a year. I used my name as the business name with marketing on the end so I did not need to get a fictitious name filed with the court. In your case the best thing to do is to contact your local city office to see if what you propose requires a license.

Ruth asks…

Looking for information and advice on phone answering service for an online business?

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone has any advice about using a phone answering service for an online business.

I’m interested in outsourcing this part of my work as I am not able to answer calls all day. I’m looking information about cost, benefits and implications of using an answering service.

If anyone has any experience and could offer advice, that would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Jere answers:

A phone answering sercive can provide 24/7 answering services with live operators that handle every call correctly and professionally.

If your run an online business, these service providers not only serve you with answering phone services, they also assist you with other services like answering message service, pager, voice mail, PDA, live operator and even via web portal to fit your schedules and needs.

Phone answering services can be very effective and useful if you choose the right provider.

Sharon asks…

Good Online Business Ideas?

Does anyone know any good business ideas??

Thanks.

Jere answers:

There are two ways you can approach online businesses. There is the “active” online business where you must keep doing work all the time to make money. An example might be an online service where you design websites. In order for you to make money, you have to do the service.

Pros: Instant cash. Easy to start.
Cons: must work all of the time to get money, competition

The other method is starting a passive online company. At the beginning, you work a lot to get it started, but then, money comes in sort of on autopilot.

The best way to start a passive income company is a website holding company.

Basically, first you select a niche or topic (weight loss is to competitive, but weight loss for kids is a better niche). You then buy a domain name (say weightlossforkids . Com) and install free WordPress. You then write only 10-15 articles on your topic, and you promote affiliate products and Adsense. Realistically, you could probably make a few hundred a month from one site. Then, you just create more sites.

Maria asks…

what is an internet?

what is its historical background?

Jere answers:

The Internet is a worldwide, publicly accessible series of interconnected computer networks that transmit data
It is a “network of networks” that consists of millions of smaller domestic, academic, business, and government networks, which together carry various information and services, such as electronic mail, online chat, file transfer, and the interlinked web pages and other resources of the World Wide Web (WWW).

The services accessible via the Internet includes WWW, e-mail, file sharing, online gaming and others described below.

This Internet Time line begins in 1962, before the word ‘Internet’ is invented. The world’s 10,000 computers are primitive, although they cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. They have only a few thousand words of magnetic core memory, and programming them is far from easy.

Domestically, data communication over the phone lines is an AT&T monopoly. The ‘Picturephone’ of 1939, shown again at the New York World’s Fair in 1964, is still AT&T’s answer to the future of worldwide communications.

But the four-year old Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) of the U.S. Department of Defense, a future-oriented funder of ‘high-risk, high-gain’ research, lays the groundwork for what becomes the ARPANET and, much later, the Internet.

By 1992, when this time line ends,

* the Internet has one million hosts
* the ARPANET has ceased to exist
* computers are nine orders of magnitude faster
* network bandwidth is twenty million times greater.

History of the Internet

Prior to the widespread inter-networking that led to the Internet, most communication networks were limited by their nature to only allow communications between the stations on the network.
In the 1960s several research programs began to research principles of networking between separate physical networks, and this led to the development of Packet switching.

This led to the development of networking solutions in the late 1960s and 1970s, including ARPANET, and X.25.

This spread of inter-network began to form into the idea of a global inter-network that would be called ‘The Internet’, and this began to quickly spread as pre-existing networks were converted over to become compatible with this. This spread quickly across the advanced telecommunication networks of the western world, and then began to penetrate into the rest of the world as it became the de-facto international standard and global network. However, the disparity of growth lead to a Digital divide that is still a concern today.

Following commercialization and introduction of privately run Internet Service Providers in the 1980s, and its expansion into mass popular use in the 1990s, the Internet has had a drastic impact on culture and commerce. This includes the rise of near instant communication by e-mail, text based discussion forums, the World Wide Web. Investor speculation in new markets provided by these innovations would also lead to the inflation and collapse of the Dot-com bubble, a major market collapse. But despite this, growth of the internet continued, and still does.

Donald asks…

Do you think that pro wrestling would be better without the internet, why or why not?

With spoilers, backstage news, and stuff, do you think pro wrestling would be better if we didn’t have the internet. The internet gives us spoilers, backstage news and other stuff that fans back 20 years ago didn’t have.

Do you think pro wrestling would be better, without the internet.

Jere answers:

Well, I don’t think the “Internet” itself has ruined wrestling. It’s all these spoiler sites and rumors/predictions which is almost impossible to avoid by certain reasons.
The Internet can be reached back as far as the 1960’s, which means the internet was around through the whole Attitude Era, Golden Era and even further back. Spoiler sites on the other hands, is a new invention which has been popularized the last couple of years.

I personally think that the internet has helped the Pro Wrestling business. It’s been an important factor for Globalization and advertisement in other countries outside the U.S. It’s a place where people from all over the world, can connect with eachother and share their common interest; Wrestling, whether it’s Pro Wrestling or any other form of it.
Internet has been a central factor for people to expand their wrestling knowledge further, and create a community where everyone(sex, age, location) can meet new people and just have a good time. If the internet was not around, we wouldn’t have this exceptional opportunity. Let’s say you’re a fan of Pro Wrestling, but none of your friends likes it, maybe you’re even embarrassed to tell them that you like it. The Internet is a solution for people with that problem. On the internet you can discuss things you may not have the chance to discuss in real life, with fellow human beings with same interests and passion.

Although what really has ruined the unpredictability Pro Wrestling once had, is all these spoilers, rumors and predictions. This is what truly ruins the fun of it. The amount of spoiler sites is endless, and it’s almost impossible to avoid it. Although, it’s all about personal preferences. Some people love spoilers, so I can’t speak for everyone. But, if we look at some of the positive sides with spoilers, we get the chance to explore things we’d normally wouldn’t. Just as u said, backstage interviews, never-seen fotages and things they try to avoid us from seeing and knowing.

I also think the internet has brought out some of the inner troll in us all. It’s easier to rant and complain over the internet, than doing it in real life. How simple isn’t it to just log onto your computer and start complaining about all the terrible decisions that specific promotion makes, complaing about the current ratings in WWE, John Cena’s superman abilities, blah blah blah. The internet has definitely made it easier to complain for wrestling fans. It’s almost easier to complain than it is to find something positive. This could have something to do with the anonymity and the fact that it’s all virtual.

Do you think pro wrestling would be better, without the internet?

To some extent, yes, but not wholeheartedly, no. As for the unpredictability, Pro Wrestling would probably be more interesting and less predictable without the internet. On the other hand, without it, we wouldn’t have the opportunity to meet fellow fans and discuss Pro Wrestling with people all over the world. So, I guess i’m both against the internet, but at the same time I appreciate some of the possibilities it brings.

I also think the Internet, in this case the “IWC” has helpe Pro Wrestling, because it gives the different Pro Wrestling promotions a chance to see what fans think about their product. Let’s take WWE for instance. If they’re curious about what the fans though of their PPV, they can just find any wrestling site on the internet and read comments and questions from users all over the world. It gives them a chance to make their product more suitable for their fans. It gives them a chance to improve their product even further. They can use the internet as guidelines for their product. Basically, it’s easier for them to know what the fans want. The internet is like a communicating source between two parts, the fans and the company. So, I guess it gives the fans a feeling of affilation and participation.

Cheers, interesting question 😉 hope that helped!

Lisa asks…

Is drop shipping is a good solution for internet business?

We are doing dropshipping from lat couple of months but faced lot many problems with drop shippers and sometimes it seems to be mission impossible to find a good drop shipping company to whom you can work and get business.
http://www.transfashions.com
But selecting drop shipping companies is still a risky business because first nearly all of thme ask for inital payment which could range from couplr of dollars to some hundred dollars. And if you pay that money then you never know what kind of experience you will get.

Jere answers:

The price of no inventory cost, drop ship margins are relatively small, it may be a good way to broaden your product line and attract more prospects, kinda like a store loss leaders.

There are certified supplier lists with a membership fee that might be worth the investment in reduced losses, WorldWideBrands.com is the authority, SalesHoo.com is a new zealand copy.

George asks…

What should I name my Internet Business?

We will offer Website Creation, Social Media Marketing/Management and perhaps graphic design such as logos, flyers etc. I can’t for the life of me think of a catchy name. Anyone?

I have some suggestions for you.

Your Questions About Doing Business Online World

Linda asks…

I want to start an Online Business! ?

Does anyone with experience in the online business industry want to help me get started. Please specify if you are a real person because I keep getting these fake answers. Thank you

Jere answers:

I am a real person.

I’ve done some research with the idea of starting my own online business, but I’m no expert.

First, you need to decide what type of online business you plan to have. Selling something? Providing a service?

Next, will you have your own website or use an existing one such as eBay?

Then you need to draw up a real-world business plan. It can be brief, but it needs to cover all aspects: what the business is, what the company is (sole proprietorship, corporation, etc.), your business policies and practices, financing/cash flow projections, contingency plans, etc.

Online businesses are not ways to get rich effortlessly. If you really want to succeed, put in the time and do the research. Go to your library and get books on online business, or research it in depth on the web.

Charles asks…

what is the best thing to do in the online world Second Life?

Jere answers:

I guess research for idea’s on what kind of online business will you do.. Coz its not hard, its cheap and extra income..

But if just bord i guess just answering here and sharing knowladge or watching funny video’s

John asks…

How do I get started with an online business?

So I am 24, and a full-time college student. I have an idea of starting up my own online business selling and marketing different kinds of tanning lotions.

When I go to tanning salons, I noticed that they charge about twice what I could get from Amazon.

I was wondering if anyone had any experience or knowledge to pass this on to me? I would like to maybe buy from Amazon…like say I’ll buy a bottle from amazon for $17.00 and then sell it from my website for $25.00.

That is the sort of concept that I would like to do and still make profits from having an online business.

Really, any advice would help! Thanks!

Jere answers:

Money.dude it cost money.there are some sites out there that will help you build your own web site for free,i dont suggest it.the site will only last so long before they shut you down.you have found your self a good market niche.exploit it to the fullest, only dont just sell tanning stuff.check out the car stereos on amazon,sd micro cards those things sell for 80 bucks in a store,on amazon they are 11 bucks! I to had this idea, only im not so computer savey like you might be.the first thing i would do is get your money together and find someone that can build a site for you, dont get someone online to do it,maybe the nerd squad better known as the geek squad to do it.next get your name out there advertisement is key.and be perpared to do some major shipping, maybe offer free shipping on big orders, incentive…remember your are world wide when you deal with the internet.so get ready to deal over seas maybe.getting started is the hard part.good luck dude

Sandra asks…

resource to build online internet business?

what are some ways via internet and phone consulting can i earn me some income as a home based business without putting major money into big html web sites and etc. what are some internet interactive tools i can use so i can communicate with my clients about consulting services or product follow up support when someone buys from my affiliate partners?

Jere answers:

Welcome To The World Wide Web!!

Online business requires basics like domain name for your website and then hosting it. Even websites are easy to be built, and you need n’t require to know the technical part behind it.

Visit http://www.domain-name-register-store.com/ and get support.

How to Set Up an Online Store

There’s so much to consider when setting up an online store that it can seem downright overwhelming to a would-be ecommerce entrepreneur. From the little details to the bigger ones, you as the owner are responsible for all of it – and practically every last decision point could be treated in an article of its own. Think of this, then, as an overview of the process.

Before you even take the first step of going into business online, you need to ask some of the same questions you’d ask when going into any business. Do you have something to market? That is, can you give your customers something they want, for which they’ll pay you enough money for you to turn a profit? It doesn’t have to be a specific product; it can be a service, or it can even be a combination of the two. One entrepreneur I know writes and maintains custom software for small businesses, blurring the line between a product and a service.

Once you’ve decided what kind of online business you’re getting into, you need to choose a domain name. This is fairly important, since it will be your company’s online identity. Think of Amazon, for example. The point is, all of your customers will remember your URL, so you want to choose one that will stick in their heads, and give a favorable impression. If you’d like to read more about choosing a domain name, there are a number of articles on the subject, including one here on Web Hosters.

So, you know what you’re going to offer for sale, and you’ve chosen your domain name. What’s the next step? You want to register your domain name, and you want to put together a website that will encourage your customers to trust you and buy

Get started at http://www.domain-name-register-store.com/

Good luck!
Vera Chandler.

Your Questions About The Real Biz

Mandy asks…

Growth of restoration biz?

We have to analyze our business and I can’t find any facts of my industry.
My business is a restoration like what Rick’s Restoration does on history channel but I can’t find any facts about it.
I know that more and more people are getting into antiques and vintage things because you see people all the time with that kind of thing.
Can anybody give me some numbers of the growth in restoration? Thank you!
Not that kind of restoration.
One problem with this site is people are stupid and don’t read your question!

Jere answers:

People have always been into antiques and vintage. I have never heard of the show, but I am in real estate and own a nice collection of Victorians and CA cottages. “restoration” is broad, you need to niche. There is a shortage of people who can restore plaster and wood floors. And of course decorative features of Victorians.

Lisa asks…

Real Nickname please!?

Okay so me and my bro here are having some trouble.
We need to know the real nickname for Lelouch in ‘Lelouch the Rebelion’
I say its Lulu and my bro says its De-Douche.
Plz help cause Lulu is my fave character and I don’t appreciate him dissing him.

Jere answers:

I think it really is Lulu.

In the original Japanese, Lelouch is written “????”.
So, they use ”??” at times I think. (Literally “Ruru”, since there is no “L” specific katakana.)

You can see how “Ruru” makes sense for the Japanese, and “Lulu” makes sense for the English audience =3

At this site, I think a few people call him “??”.
Beware, there are pictures for MAJOR SPOILERS, as in the ending of the R2 series here.
This is a discussion on the upcoming 2010 Code Geass series, by the way =3
http://news4vip.livedoor.biz/archives/51404253.html

Thomas asks…

what is real estate appraiser school like?

I live in souther california; was wondering what real estate appraiser school entails and what the requirements are for licensure

Jere answers:

Desolate!

Friend, try another career! There are tons of appraisers ‘bugging” out of the biz due to the INTERFERENCE of the App Management Companies. Another “well intentioned idea gone awry”.
Dig it, the Lender is charging the borrower $400 to $500 for the required appr job. Then they turn around and pay the Appraiser $200, a mere pittance. So the fellas are now doing more work, cuz we’re mandated to add another form 1040MCC, for half the fee!!?

However if you have some “inside” source that is gonna feed you enuff work, have at it!

1st you’ll need to learn the “Language” of the biz: your basic RE courses, Appraisal courses and RE Finance courses. 2nd you take the “Practicum” courses in which you study the hows of the Art. Then you gotta find a Mentor that will let you Apprentice for a year, you need 2000hrs before you can strike out on your own!

My opinion: they killed a perfectly cool career in which you could drive out to a property in the AM do your field work, then head back to the office and spend the “hottest” part of the day in the A/C processing the report, it was a sweet routine!

Me, I took my Brokers Lic and ventured into the sales side of the biz….ALAS!

Richard asks…

If a business is not profitable in Ontario, what happens?

Say I start a small business selling a product. Not many people want to buy it, and I make a minimal amount of cash. $200 a year or something. It’s not my primary source of income, so it’s not a problem to me. But is the business at risk from not being a business or something? Do you have to apply for licenses?

I ask because I have this idea for selling something, but I’m not sure a lot of people would want to buy it. Still, it’s something I’d like to do, and I can’t lose anything from it. What legal repercussions are there if my business doesn’t fair well?

Is there a difference in the outcome of what happens to business that are not very profitable, and ones that lose money? Is there a status my business could lose?

I haven’t looked into this at all. I’d really appreciate someone pointing me in the right direction. Thanks.
Nono, I want it to be a real business. My concern is that I want to play it safe. Only do it on the side and not invest too much money until/(if) I can go full time with it.

My concern is this – what happens if I am only making a few hundred dollars per year, but it’s a registered business? Is that okay? Is there a threshold of profits a business requires?

Jere answers:

Since yours is not a real biz, you are free to try to sell
something to someone. That is either a single or a very
infrequent activity or a hobby.

Canada has some dif laws than USA does.

But basically, you have no obligations.
Do not volunteer you are a biz, just that you have
something to offer whomever……….

Chris asks…

i need a real job at home no mlm biz?

Jere answers:

Well I can help you out with a referal to a place that allows you to work from home. However, home jobs only pay minimum wage. If this is sufficient amount of income for you, then you can email me and I’ll be happy to send you a web site to a company where you can apply for a home job.

From what I’ve experienced, if you really want to make a sufficient amount of income, then I suggest you start your own home based business. There are plenty of options to have. Most home based business cost under $500 dollars. You have the same income opportunity as a traditional business without all the over head expenses. This is what we have done and was able to start our non profit organization softin. It’s also now is a major funding resource for other non profit organizations.
If you’d like more information on home based businesses, or would like the link to a home based job to apply for, feel free to email me at tvague@seafaringopportunities.org

Your Questions About How To Do Business Taxes Online

Helen asks…

I need help to report business cash investment on form 4562?

I am a new business owner and doing tax online. I complete all tools and equipment depreciation, but I do not know where to put the business cash investment, so that I can begin doing amortization calculation. Please help me, anyone out there.Or, advise me on what form and line should I report it, though.

Jere answers:

Cash invested in to a business is not deductible.

You really should see a professional. The headaches from doing your return incorrectly in the first year will have ripple effects in future years.

Joseph asks…

What tax forms do I need to fill out for my Online Business?

I started an online business (sole proprietorship) late last year (2012). I have nexus in only one state (Utah) and made only 1 sale in that state. I was sent the TC-63M forms for utah sales tax. I normally do my personal taxes through tax act. Should I do my business taxes separately? What forms do I need to complete federal tax for my business? My business had about $1000 in sales, but none of that was actually profit, as much went into buying supply and startup costs such as a business license, advertising, etc.

Clearly I need to do a lot more research on the subject of business taxes, but if anyone can help me with some quick answers it would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

Jere answers:

Personal and business income tax will be one return – form 1040, schedule C or C-EZ, and schedule SE.

Startup costs are amortized across several years, not just all deducted the first year.

Sales tax return is separate, and probably more frequent that annual.

James asks…

Can I File Taxes Online With Form 4852?

My previous employer went out of business and did not send me a W2. I had the IRS snail mail me a 4852 but now I would like to file taxes online instead. Is it possible to file online if you don’t have a W2 or does it even matter, since it’s all being done online anyway? I can’t find any relevant information on the IRS site, and I’m rather ignorant about taxes and have never done my own taxes.

Jere answers:

You’ll have to file that by mail.

Mandy asks…

Does a business that is registered considered a business already or when they open for business?

I’m a little unsure, say I register online for my lounge and decide to form a LLC. Does my business go into effect right away tax wise or when I have my grand opening. Also where would I find info about paying business taxes?

Jere answers:

It will go live tax wise when you register your business not when you have the grand opening, becasue before the grand opening you will have been doing things behind the scenes

also try business link
http://www.businesslink.gov.uk/bdotg/action/home

and direct gov for more info on taxes

Also HMRC look at them!!

Paul asks…

What form do I need to request from Vendors I spent more than $600 with for tax purposes?

I opened a little art gallery/boutique this past year and this is the first year I am filing small business taxes since opening the retail location ( I was strictly online before selling only handmade items I made myself). The majority of the items I’m selling are handmade by local artists and myself, but I did buy additional stock wholesale from a few vendors. I know that if I spent more than $600 with a particular vendor I am supposed to request a form from them that I will use during tax filing. What is this form?

Jere answers:

You need to send IRS Form W-9 – Request for Taxpayer ID. The vendor will return the form with their federal tax id, and they will specify whether or not they are exempt from withholding. If they are not exempt, then you will need to send them a 1099 in January for your total annual purchases.

Your Questions About Email Marketing Tips

Maria asks…

Does anyone have tips on how to sell on ebay?

I want to start a small internet business on ebay. People have given me a few tips but I want to find out something more in depth. If you’ve sold on ebay before and made some kind of profit please help me out.

Jere answers:

You can go to ebay for a tutorial on how to be a seller:

http://pages.ebay.com/help/newtoebay/getting-started.html#learnsell

The basics in getting started can be found via online tutorials and books. But to get to the nitty-gritty of listing an item:

Be honest and accurate in your descriptions – One-sentence descriptions are for lazy sellers. One paragraph should be sufficient for most items. My general guideline is the more expensive (read higher priced) an item, the more you should ‘talk it up.’ It won’t be time wasted. Use lots of adjectives in your descriptions. Adjectives make prose and your items come alive. Without them, prose is dull and your items less appealing.

Be professional – use good English with no spelling errors

PICTURES:

ALWAYS include at least one picture, more pictures for higher priced items. Make sure your pictures are clear. There are far too many pictures on ebay that are dark. If prospective buyers can’t see your items clearly, your items, more than likely, will not fetch the closing prices they deserve. To remove darkness, use any photo editor to add some brightness and a wee bit of contrast.

Eliminate clutter. Prospective bidders don’t want to know what kind of cereal you eat or what kind of kitchen table or bedspread you have. Use a SOLID backdrop when taking your pictures as you want to focus all of the attention on your item. In short, the one and only thing you want in your picture is the item being sold. A SOLID white or light blue backdrop is best. However, there are certainly items that won’t show well on a light backdrop. In these cases, use a darker backdrop. And for gosh sake, don’t even think of using a plaid blanket as a backdrop for your pictures as I once saw on ebay. You should also crop the photos in your photo editor. Good pictures can add 5% to 10% to final closing prices.

GOOD DESCRIPTIONS + GOOD PICTURES = GOOD PRESENTATION. This is what you should strive for.

COMMUNICATION / CUSTOMER SERVICE:

GOOD Communication is a must – Always notify buyers when you mail their items. It is not only a courtesy you would want and expect as a buyer but it is also both good customer service and good business practice. After all, you are the ‘President & CEO’ of your ‘company’ running your business but using ebay as your selling medium. In short, conduct your business so that it reflects well on you as a person. Treat everyone as a human being, not a living being, and this includes people who have inquiries about your items, not just your buyers. They could be your buyers and repeat customers.

You may want to use an email along these lines after you mail the buyer’s item:

Hi Buyer’s FIRST NAME HERE,

Just to keep you updated……………………….

Thanks for your payment! I mailed your widget this morning via USPS Priority Mail from Schickshinny, PA. You should receive it Saturday or Monday. I have also posted positive feedback for you. Please do the same for me if everything is satisfactory when your widget arrives. If, however, you are displeased with your purchase and you feel the item is not as I described it, please email me. I will rectify the situation to your satisfaction.

Again, thanks for bidding and congratulations on winning!

It has been a pleasure!

Regards,

Your name here

TIPS TO MAXIMIZE PROFITS:

Do not limit your auctions to one country. SELL WORLDWIDE. The reason is elementary. You now have access to the largest market ebay has to offer. Limiting your auctions to only one country also limits your potential profits. A basic business tenet is, ‘the greater the potential market, the greater the potential to maximize profits.’ But do note in your listing that PayPal is the only form of payment you will accept from overseas bidders/buyers. Through experience, you will learn that there are certain problem countries. Italy seems to be one of them. Mail sent to buyers in Italy very often ‘mysteriously disappears.’ If this is the case, just note in your listing you sell to all countries EXCEPT (name(s) here).

However, if you decide to limit sales to only one country, such as the USA, never say NO when you receive an email asking if you would ship to Taiwan, Germany, Australia or wherever. The reason is that you have a ‘FISH ON THE HOOK!’ This person will bid! When he or she does, this may force a previous bidder to enter another, higher bid or force later, first time bidders to come in with higher bids. So always say YES to these emails if you want to maximize your profits. But do say that PayPal is the only form of payment you will accept from these overseas bidders

Do not limit your payment options – Offer all of them. Sellers who offer only PayPal or only money orders or money orders and checks are further limiting their potential market and, in turn, reducing their potential to maximize profits. Some people will not bid on items that do not have PayPal as a payment option. Then you have a smaller percentage that refuse to use PayPal and prefer to pay by check only or money order only.

NOTE: Effective late October 2008, ebay will no longer allow payment for items by checks or money orders.

Avoid selling ‘nickel and dime’ items. People who list and sell a steady stream of items that close for $5 or less are wasting their time. Less expensive, similar items ($5 or less) are best sold as a group to save time. If you have a large number of these cheaper, similar items, divide them up into sub lots of four or five.

More expensive, similar items are best sold separately to maximize profits. There are ebay ‘vultures’ who just love to swoop down on similarly grouped items in one listing. When they win these auctions, they turn around and sell the items individually and, in most cases, get one and a half to 2 times and sometimes three times what they paid for them on an average item basis. I know this works. When I had more time (read unemployed), I was one of these ‘vultures.’ This is one of those situations where the parts are worth more than the whole. However, do be cautious if you venture into this arena. You have to know your merchandise. Stay in those areas you are familiar with. You can’t jump in blindly to any and every auction that has grouped items.

If you can buy a large lot of similar merchandise for $100 to $200 and turn it around for $300 to $600, it works out very nicely, indeed! Most buyers of these large lots will be vultures as well so you could be ‘butting bids.’ Keep in mind that the higher the closing price at ebay, the less your profit on the turnaround. It’s not an exact science and it does take a little experience to really know what you’re doing but you can’t be afraid to go out on a limb. That’s where the fruit is. When I see an auction of grouped items it tells me loud and clear that the seller is far more interested in getting rid of their stuff the quickest, easiest way possible and ‘be done with it’ rather than in making a decent profit or profit at all.

Short of items to sell and where to find items to sell? Garage and yard sales, church bazaars, flea markets, estate sales are obvious as are ‘junktique’ shops. If you want to let your fingers do the walking, you too can be crafty ‘vulture’ like a select group of other ebay sellers. Become a member of several smaller auction sites and search for bargains there. But as before, ‘stick with what you know.’

If you want to do your listings OFFLINE, download the TURBO LISTER program free from ebay. Once you have finished with your listings, you can upload them anytime or schedule a date and time when you want your auctions to start.

Lastly, keep in mind that experience is the best teacher. Start off slowly listing only one or two items and see how that goes for you. Once you get your feet wet and gain confidence, start listing more items on a weekly basis. You will soon learn the ins and outs and the dos and don’ts in short order and ultimately settle on a system that works best for you. If you are conscientious and put in a little extra effort, you will do well. If you are lazy or indifferent in selling your items, you won’t. Good luck & happy selling!

Laura asks…

I am starting to sell on Ebay, i was wanting to know good tips and information that could help me out?

I am going to start selling items on Ebay and im new at this so i was interested in knowing anything helpful.

Example: How to earn feedback without selling? and Earn it fast? Any good tips or information would be greatly appreciated.

Jere answers:

Everyone who joins ebay starts with 0 feedback and yes, prospective buyers are reluctant to bid on items from such a seller, especially if the items are higher priced. It is best to establish some feedback for yourself by first buying 4 or 5 items and paying for them in a timely manner. Once you’ve established a 100% feedback rating, even it is for only a handful of items, then you can start selling.

You can go to ebay for a tutorial on how to be a seller:

http://pages.ebay.com/help/newtoebay/getting-started.html#learnsell

The basics in getting started can be found via online tutorials and books. But to get to the nitty-gritty of listing an item:

Donald asks…

In terms of capital appreciation and rental potential where is the best overseas market to buy property?

With property in UK so expensive I am thinking about buying overseas but not sure where.I am first time buyer and would like to rent property to help with mortgage and hopefully enjoy capital growth on the value of the house.Any tips /advice?

Jere answers:

I would suggest Vancouver, Canada. Purchase a condo downtown – the vacancy rate is below 1%, and the rents are relatively high. A one-bedroom condo in downtown will cost you about C$300,000 and can rent for around $1200 – $1500 per month, which should cover most of your expenses. With the 2010 Olympics coming, there is still plenty of growth left in the market.

You can look for property on http://www.mls.ca

If you need a good realtor there, email me – the realtor my husband and I used when we purchased our condos there, is outstanding.

Carol asks…

Can anyone give me tips on being a good receptionist?

I am really wanting to be a good receptionist. I just got a job as a full time receptionist in a paper shredding business. What makes a good receptionist? Can anyone give me tips?

Jere answers:

Here is how to be a good receptionist.

1) A certain type of person is meant to meet and greet clients and answer phones. The employee who never has a bad thing to say about somebody, is friendly and upbeat and loves to please people is the best fit for this position.

2) A good receptionist will answer phone with a unique flair, emphasizing a certain word. Phone should be answered with smile on face and genuine interest in what person on other end has to say. Usually offices rely on voice-mail systems. That is a sure way to lose out to a happy, friendly, live voice on other end of the line.
You need a receptionist that will dress to impress your clients and take pride in his or her office area.

3) It is important for good receptionist to be buffer to employees. If staff is really busy, receptionist should know it. Receptionist who is informed can help employees avoid unnecessary last minute drop-ins, without denying legitimate appointments.
It is appropriate for a receptionist to invoke a discussion with clients, as long as it isn’t controversial. You don’t want your client assuming the receptionist’s philosophy is reflective of the company as a whole. General questions and small-talk topics are fine.

4) The receptionist should be an extension of your marketing team. Keeping track of important dates, giving out information you want your client to know, but giving it out in way that makes your client feel special is a gift, and a good receptionist will have it.
The receptionist should make sure company brochures are at the coffee table and keep the coffee pot full and fresh, the candy bowl loaded, and the clients moving through the reception area smoothly.

5) If you haven’t established a communal calendar so the receptionist has access to view scheduled appointments, it would be a good idea to make that happen. You can do this easily if you are networked; simply allow the receptionist on your network. If your email system doesn’t allow that, you can set up a calendar on the Internet and ask everyone to post appointments the receptionist needs to know about on the site.

Helen asks…

I am fairly new to the network marketing. I am looking for tips and ideas on how to expand my team. Thank you?

This is a ground floor opportunity and I have made some money, but I am looking on ideas on how to expand and grow my team and where to find leaders to join my team. If anyone has any insight or helpful tips I would appreciate it. Thank you. Please no (MLM) haters please. This is a legit company with a solid rating with BBB. I did my research and am happy, I am just looking for insight. Thank you.

Jere answers:

Hi,

What many network marketers are doing to find people for their team is online lead generation. You can’t rely on your company’s replicated website because everyone else in your company has one. What you need is a simple blog or website that talks about your company and what your doing to make money at your opportunity. Then you set up a “squeeze page” that will get people to put in their contact information and then you can call or email them about your opportunity.

Be sure to check your company’s policies and procedures to make sure you can build a website or blog using their name. If not, that’s okay because you can still create a website that makes people curious about your opportunity so that you can call them and let them know what it is.

I hope this isn’t too confusing. Here’s an article that explains in more detail what I am talking about: http://simple-internet-strategies.com/network-marketing-internet-business.html

Good luck with your new business!

Your Questions About Direct Marketing News

Mark asks…

What is the best online trading site?

I’m using ING Direct‘s Sharebuilder right now, but I’m hardly impressed. I can’t buy SPX or many others I want. What’s the best one to go with? E-Trade, Scottrade, etc?

Also, is there anyway I can get all my investments transferred over, or do I have to sell it all and buy it again?

Jere answers:

All major brokerage firms provide their clients with on-line services, including trading platforms, latest market & financial news and research.

Customer need to select the site that is best for them. Traders have requirements in a site, while investors have other requirements.

Although most sites are geared to general securities and commodities, however customers may have special needs for the types of products they trade, and the markets in which they trade. For example I use Fidelity for investing. Scottrade for equities trading and ThinkorSwim for option trading

It seems that the most popular firms for on-line investing/trading all of which provide excellent platforms and services are; Scottrade; Chas.Schwab; TDAmeritrade; Fidelity; E-Trade and Thinkorswim.

You can have all the contents currently your account with your present brokerage firm to whomeever you select as you new firm. Just have the new firm provide you with the transfer form (ACATS form), you will sign them, attach a copy of your latest statement. Return them to your new brokerage firm and within 10 days all your account will move to the new firm

Ruth asks…

What are some of the top database programs in the market right now?

I’m a database manager for a non-profit organization and though we are operating an MS Access database, the organization wants to move to a more sophisticated database service, preferably web-based. Does anyone have any recommendations or suggestions on what to look for with these programs?

Thanks!

Jere answers:

Here are some useful sources of non-profit databasing ideas

Don’t overlook the most important tkpe of marketing for NPOs– direct marketing.
This is the accountable, responsible, targetable form of marketing that uses statistics and databasing — but on a much higher plane.. It is so much fun it should be illegal. It’s like having a personal army of fund-raising cyborgs who are trained to do nothing but go out there and bring back contributions.
There’s an interesting free source of marketing ideas you might want to look at( and tap when you need fresh thinking): word-jobber.blogspot.com.

Linda asks…

Stock market crash implifications to the economy?

i was wondering due to the stock market fall of 5% what implications would this have to the economy?

Jere answers:

It is an very interesting question.

Basically recession in economy is fueling the stock market crash and not other way round.

If there is market crash, it affects indivudual interest – some people gain and others stand to lose. In bear market you are permitted to sell the stock at higher price and then buy at lower price – make a killing – do people always lose in bear market. One can make every happending as opportunity to become rich – none prevents.

To the extent the stock valuation comes down overall capitalisation of market only comes down, the excess fat (Money) lost in stock market (say 600 or 900 billions) where it get disappeared. They go no where – it will be well within the economy. From stock equity market – it may go to commodity market or debt instruments, CD, etc., etc.,

It may marginally affect GDP – collection of direct tax, income tax may come down, since traders will be booking losses and adjust earlier profit.

Then why so much talk on STOCK MARKET CRASH.

Reason is the investors are richest/mighty – they control media and Government to some extent – all these are making fuss, hue and cry – as crying baby only get milk. They create sympathy from regulators, Fed. Bank, Government and obtain concessions, lowering the interest, free-bees, etc., etc.,

large media coverage on STOCK MARKET CRASH consfuses the public, small investors, who with fear of losing little money left-out with draw from the market – at that time big inveters enter the market and average the price and get fair valuation of their stock position. Media is benefited with hot new and big investors are benefitted with new emerging opportunity.

During Stock Market Crash small investors suffer and not country’s economy or big (HNI) investors.

=================
when there is force majure like flood, earth quake, etc., the sympathy will be only for one day.
Farmers lose very heavily – is there any compensation offered to them – not even a lip sympathy.
During industrial slow down lot of workers loses employment, is there any big news in the Media as stock market crash. Loss to Agricultural production, down sizing, loss of employment directly affect the economy – but there is no talk about it by mighty.
During STOCK MARKET CRASH even COMMUNISTS talks of reform, extending help to market, etc.,

Lisa asks…

Possible overthrow of the dictator in the Philippines?

The news is on right now here and it is sketchy.
Does anyone know, is Arroyo being overthrown by the pro-democracy group?
Malacanang is surrounded by the military and people would like to know who’s side they will be on!
Please, if you know anything, tell us!
You said it happened on Thursday, it is presently 2:33 pm Thursday here now.
What you said so far is very informative and the news is starting to reflect just what you have said.
People are glued to their TV sets and you can hear laughter and cheering all over town!
There is another rumor out now, that Arroyo and her husband are trying desperately to negotiate so they can escape to Europe, but for what reason is still unclear.
One can only speculate at this point.

Jere answers:

This is the latest I think:

MANILA (Reuters) – About a dozen uniformed Philippine soldiers on trial for a failed 2003 mutiny walked out of court on Thursday and set up camp in a luxury hotel in Manila’s financial district, calling for the overthrow of the government.

There was no violence but the soldiers included a senator who led an attempt to overthrow President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo in 2003 and they were joined by former vice-president Teofisto Guingona.

Senator Antonio Trillanes, speaking earlier on local television, urged people to join the rebel soldiers in the Makati financial district.

Trillanes was a navy officer when he led the attempted coup.

Mobile text messages in Manila urged people to gather at the Peninsula Hotel, which is around the corner from the stock exchange.

Another mutineer Brigadier Danilo Lim, a former commander of the elite Scout Rangers unit, said the group was taking control of government.

“We make this fateful step of removing Mrs. Macapagal Arroyo from the presidency and undertake the formation of a new government,” Lim said in a press conference at the Peninsula Hotel.

GUARDS JOIN DEFENDANTS

Around two dozen soldiers, some armed, took up positions in the hotel’s palatial lobby while guests continued to sip coffee and take lunch.

They included the dozen soldiers on trial for the 2003 mutiny, along with their guards at the courthouse who were supposed to prevent the kind of escape that transpired on Thursday.

Troops stationed at the base of the lobby staircase refused to let Manila’s police chief pass.

Some of the soldiers wore red armbands with a sun logo, similar to an insignia worn during the mutiny in 2003, when junior officers took over a luxury apartment tower in the financial district. That coup bid ended peacefully.

Arroyo ordered the army to re-arrest the soldiers and military chief General Hermogenes Esperon said all means would be used.

“I directed the national capital regional commander to address the situation and use force if needed,” Esperon told reporters in Zamboanga City, where he was visiting troops.

A Reuters reporter saw at least five truckloads of navy men around the hotel.

The police were put on full alert and radio reports said Arroyo had called an emergency cabinet meeting.

“IT HURTS THE COUNTRY”

Arroyo, deeply unpopular due to long-running corruption allegations, has survived at least two coup plots and three impeachment bids because of a jaded middle class that is sick of political instability, and a strong majority in the lower house.

The stock market and the peso pared earlier gains on the soldiers’ actions.

The main index finished up 1.17 percent after earlier climbing 2.8 percent.

“It hurts the whole country,” Vivian Yuchengco, a director of the Philippine Stock Exchange, said. “People like that should be thrown in jail.”

The peso was quoted at 42.97 against the dollar compared to Wednesday’s close at 42.86.

The leaders of the group marched into the Peninsula Hotel after breaking a glass door to get in, according to local television but guests were unperturbed.

“We are not scared. We are used to this government. Our only problem is how to get out because there are navy trucks outside,” said Ed Castro, who was having lunch at the hotel.

Daniel asks…

Will the Republican Party drive our country into the great abyss?

The problem with the Republican party is that they think they are doing the right thing, but every time they are in power the wreck havoc on our society.

Our current economic doldrums are a direct result of the GOP philosophy—cut taxes and let the Type A personalities run wild with no constraints.

This policy ALWAYS crashes with devastating consequences.

When will America wake up to manipulating charlatans in the Republican Party?

Your Questions About Business Online San Diego

Richard asks…

In Freelance designing, what are the best ways in producing business for yourselves?

Designer looking to get into freelance to i’ve start business or improved the possibility of proper full time work with a company.

Jere answers:

I’m a freelancer. I’ve been one for 14 years. I’ve got work up to my eyeballs with great clients who trust me and pay me very well. My work is creatively fulfilling and I’ve got flexibility to make my own schedules, work from home, etc. (of course it also comes with a lot of stress, deadlines, all-nighters, etc.)

I’d say the best way to improve your business in the early stages is to constantly set up meetings to show your portfolio to art directors at ad agencies, magazines, corporate art departments, etc. You can find these places by doing google searches using the name of your nearest city (i.e.”San Diego Advertising Agency”). You can’t be shy. Just say “hi I’m a freelance designer I’d love to come in and show my portfolio. Is there an art director I can speak with?” Then just show up and show your stuff. The whole goal is to pick up on other names of art directors (ask!) and then visit them as well. Sooner or later someone will latch onto you.

Step 2 is to say “yes” to every project that comes your way. Even if this means you need to spend days learning new software and sleepless nights working to deadlines. The goal at this stage is to always be on time, always deliver what’s asked, and always bill within budget (even if you eat some hours)

Also:
Make sure you have samples of your work available online. And post an ad on craigslist every couple of weeks if you’re slow. (if you live in the sticks, post in big cities like SF, LA, NY and say you work remotely. But you know, freelancing is definitely an urban career… You’ll always do better if you can show up to meetings at a moment’s notice)

So basically – always be on the lookout for new clients, always be showing your portfolio, always be adding to your portfolio, always say yes, always be learning new software and techniques, and forget about sleep!

Step into this alley and we might be able to do business …lol
I’m an Aussie and I’ve sent small jars of vegemite to people I’ve met online to places like Canada and Indiana and New Mexico … Most were like you … Found it a bit overpowering at first … The best way to have it is on hot toast with plenty of butter and just enough vegemite to turn the butter that greyish browny color 🙂

Where to promote an event about kindness in business?

Hi,

The event is in San Diego and I posted it on most online calendars and in Asian Journal.

Does anyone have any ideas on where I can promote the event further to get to small business owners (0-5 employees) who want to be successful in business without giving up on being nice?

Any magazines you think I should advertise in? Websites? Any ideas?

Many thanks!
Reut

Jere answers:

Google, Yahoo, etc. Not Tv though that cost like a thousand doolars per sec.

Charles asks…

how to sell my handmade canvas oil paintings at proper price? How to start its business?

should i open a shop or online selling or something else? which is the cheap and best way? How much money is required for the same? any suggestions please? i live in india.

Jere answers:

Ah… But what is the proper price? It is what people will pay. So if they won’t pay you what you think it is worth, you need to work to make them think it is worth more.

This is called marketing. To create value, you need to restrict the supply (easy, since the works are unique) and increase the demand.

How do you increase demand? You have to think like a buyer and ask yourself why you would want the painting. Is it artistically interesting? For instance, check out the works of Nandalal Bose or Raja Ravi Varma. They are significant because their styles bridged the period between the end of WWI and the modern era, and gave voice to the yearnings of a nation (Bose’s paintings and early sketches are on display at the San Diego Museum of Art). What is unique about yours? Are they paintings of a part of India no one outside India has seen? Are they an Indian take on cubism or impressionism? Anyway, think like that and you will be able to describe your work in a way that will attract the attention of others.

Ask friends and even strangers what they think art like yours is worth. Ask them to be honest, and compare answers.

Hope this helps.

Chris asks…

Please suggest what is the most effective way in advertising small business?

I just started my business about 2 months ago and I want to promote my site.
any ideas that might help me is highly appreciated.

Thanks a lot!

Jere answers:

Search engine optimization (SEO) is what you need to be doing to get the search engines to notice you and gain exposure by actually being found by people who need what you have to offer.

Some of the key points are:

-Placing keywords into your page content (i.e Original T-shirt designs, Trusted pet sitters in San Diego, Professional web design in Dallas).

-Gathering links to your page through social bookmarks, back-links, facebook, twitter, good blog content. Links that are keywords pertaining to your site are especially valuable.

-Updating the site and pinging the search engines when you have new content.

For more ways to build your online presence and rank high with the search engines, check out http://www.local-business-marketing-specialists.com I’d start with downloading their free report.

Good luck!

Your Questions About Internet Marketing Jobs

Chris asks…

The easiest way of making money through internet?

I’ve been learning internet marketing for 3 years, read many e-books, spent much time and money, but couldn’t earn any money at all, Could you please teach me how to earn money through internet. I lost my job and want to work from my home.

Jere answers:

You can’t. Thats why you’ve been unable to succeed.

Carol asks…

Can anyone suggest me how to get an internet job?

i am searching for internet jobs that can be performed from my home, & that would help me to get a moderate sum of money.

Jere answers:

Think about what value that you can provide.

For example, if you’re into baseball, you can have a blog site about what’s going on in the baseball universe and sell ad space for baseball related products and services.

Selling ads on your site is called affiliate marketing. Basically it gives you percentage (commission) of sales that your site generate.

If you want to make a decent amount of money, you need to first get good traffic (number of people visiting your site), then generate that traffic into click through (somehow entice your visitors to click on the ads and take action/make a purchase). This is the reason why I said earlier that you need to create value so people who come to your site will keep coming back and tell their friends about your site.

Good luck.

Daniel asks…

What kind of business should I start?

I’m a recent grad and job pickin’s are slim. I’m open to some solid suggestions. Tired of all the internet marketing schemes out there.
Assets: a computer, a car and about $1000 capital.

Jere answers:

Here are some small business enterprises to consider:

1. Providing a private tutoring service ranging from music lessons, English writing and reading lessons: to training seniors on how to operate a particular computer;

2. Offering to supervise or monitor services to senior citizens especially those wanting someone to take them on errands, driving on long trips, watch and clean up homes left behind by seniors who have been relocated to assisted living quarters;

3. Becoming a regional apartment manager servicing several properties while traveling to and fro to collect monthly rents and service tenant complaints;

4. Leasing a van equipped with paper shredding machinery and go into high-income areas offering to shred their highly secretive personal papers or even allow them to do so in the privacy of their own home or office;

5. Leasing high-pressure steam cleaning equipment which can be used to remove chewing gum in front of store fronts and apartment houses and charge an appropriate hourly fee;

6. Acquiring a personal fiduciary bond up to $100,000 [actually 10% or $10,000] which will allow you to sell your services as a personal property document specialist which involves photographing and cataloging all kinds of personal property which are subject to insurance coverage; salvaging of family photo albums, etc.

Good luck!

Ken asks…

Internet Market, Websites How to make money online is there any place where its not a scam or?

Any real internet market where its not a scam or you dont have to refer people or do that pyramid thing to make money or anyone know any real ideas/way to make money

Jere answers:

If you want to start a home based business, there will be fees involved and business expenses. There are many legit business opportunities out there in direct sales, multi-level and network marketing. There are great companies to work with, but having a business isn’t for everyone. It’s worked real well for us. I now work this full-time and my wife works it part-time. This job can be done over the Internet, over the phone, or in person and is LEGIT !!! F/T, P/T, Free Training, Low Investment, No Inventory, No Sales.
If you’re serious about being your own boss, making an honest income commensurate with the effort you put forth.

Your Questions About Business Online Services Group

Thomas asks…

List 10 Business services that are ok not to know the people offering it. Online, by e-mail etc?

My lil cousin and her friends have a school project. They need to start thier own business and make it work for the rest of the school year. I told them to sell cookies or something easy like that but they want a web-site. Children of the 21st Century!!!

Jere answers:

While that’s a great idea for a school project, they might come into some problems. Nbr one, it’s hard to sell something off the Internet if customers don’t know who they’re dealing with (like a name for the group of kids at least?). Nbr two….for the most part in order to sell off the Internet they must be at least 18 yrs of age unless the parents goes into this with the children and sets up a web domain for selling products. And they need to come up with a product they can sell easily and have “stock” of.
I’m with you, selling cookies or something easy..or perhaps a lawn care business or maybe if they’re old enough to some degree and can type well.. Set up a business where they type term papers for high schoolers and college students that do not have the time for typing…something where they have the software to check grammar and spelling.
Good luck to them!

Nancy asks…

Online business/retail?

Hey,
I’ve been web designing/graphic designing in my free time for around 6 years now and i’m still only in my late teens.

I want to start an online business, the obvious route would be a web design business; but as I am also interested in business/sales i’d love to start an online retail business (preferably in fashion). I have the ability of being able to create professional websites/logos/marketing props on my side – but I have a limited budget, probably no more then $400.

How do people go about this? Especially with buying wholesale, like are there agreements you can have with a wholesaler regarding a % of profits – or must you shed out a load of money to buy your first stock?

Thanks.

Jere answers:

Selling online retail can be a good money maker. The most profitable way to go is sell from your own stock. Many people buy a pallet of new but liquidated items and can triple their investment very quickly. However, realistically you need about $1500 to do that.

Other do dropshipping, which are sites many of the other posters are suggesting. Using a dropshipper allows you to not have money tied up, and you can get started for a small amount. That is a way to get in without a lot of investment in stock, but my experience, and those of others I know, are that they are not that profitable. Partly is beacuase they charge you a monthly fee to be “registered” with their group. Also, their “wholesale” prices are higher than true wholesale so there is a smaller profit margin with their items. Finally, almost all of them are selling exactly the same products, which means you have a lot of people selling on eBay selling the exact same products you are, which means there is a lot of competition and you have to sell the items cheaper…

When I first started on eBay, I started by selling things from around the house, basically an online garage sale. It allowed me to get used to the system and build some money. Then I graduated to buying wholesale lots off eBay, breaking them down into individual items or smaller items and selling them at a profit. Then I started buying overstock and liquidated merchandise. Now I’ve graduated to selling liquidated and overstock merchandise to eBay resellers. That is actually the path most successful eBay sellers take. Very few Power Sellers develop by using dropship services.

Anyway, that is my experience. Good luck, and feel free to contact me if you have questions.

Ruth asks…

something tell me about online business. plz help me 4 choosing right business.?

Jere answers:

There are thousands of online business opportunities in the to choose from. However, if you’re new to the world of online marketing, you need to keep your focus in one opportunity and leave the rest on hold. It’s important that you take things carefully, step by step:

The first step is to choose a product or service that you want to sell. Start by asking yourself the things that you usually love to do. If you love gardening and writing, you can start putting up a website about gardening. To profit from it, write an eBook and sell it. You can also endorse gardening products via joint venture and earn commission for every sale.

Next, identify your target market. Determine the group of people who are most likely to buy your product. Say, if you are selling a gardening eBook, then seel your product to moms and dads and grannies who love to do gardening.

Once you have identified your target customers, search for websites where they usually hang out. Promote your product in these websites. People who share the same interests usually gather in online forums and social networking groups.

The next step here is quite critical since it’s all about building trust. Since you are putting up an online business, you need to show to everyone through the Internet that it’s safe to do business with you. To do this, give lots of free information, tips and pointers to your readers (for example, giving free gardening secrets and tips). This method helps build your reputation as a reliable source of valuable information. Eventually, you will keep visitors coming back to your page, thus increasing the traffic and the popularity of your website.

State your clear call for action. Identify what it is that you want your customers to do. Do you want them to read your article, or to sign up for your newsletters? Or do you want them to register for your service or buy your product?

The last pointer that I’m about to give is the core of every online business. It’s taking care of your customers. If you promised your customers to send them newsletters once a week, then do so. Some customers might email you to ask a few questions before buying your product. In this case, you need to respond to their inquiries promptly.

Joseph asks…

Is Kelson Group,British Columbia, Canada legit?

I’m from Bangladesh. I’m coming to Canada to study. My university is in kamloops,BC. I’ve been trying to find accommodation near my campus in many rental websites(craiglist, kijiji). I did find some good houses with affordable rent. But those owners are asking me to send deposit money via moneygram. And they are in another country and I can’t see the apartment before. After googling about rental scams I’m pretty sure those are scams. Now I don’t know whom to trust anymore.
However, after searching more and more I’ve finally found this property renting company. They’ve got some good houses. Is this “The Kelson Group
#208 – 220 4th Ave.
Kamloops, BC V2C 3N5
Canada
(250) 372-1940 ”
legit? Can I trust on them and rent a house ?

Jere answers:

The company has been in business for many years, but you should still check them out with the chamber of commerce or Better Business Bureau. Thompson Rivers University has a service for international students to help with accommodations as well –

http://www.truworld.ca/internationalstudents/housing.html

Be careful of any online rental advertisement. Kamloops is a small city in population but large in area. If an ad says ‘near the university’ or ‘close to transit’, check the address using Google maps. Many people rent based on the landlords description, only to find that there is no bus service or a two hour bus ride to get to TRU.

Mary asks…

Teenage Business Ownership?

What are the limits for a high school student who wants to run a business such as an online advertising based one.

Jere answers:

Great question! You can run a business of your own at any age. The key is to really make money at it, you will want a legitimate business license, Tax IDs, etc. The good news is the costs of business are tax deductible and you don’t even have to show a profit for 2 years but you MUST show the intent to make a profit. The library has a number of books for teens… Ask your librarian. (Email me if you come up dry. I have a list of them) There’s a group called Junior Achievements across the US and even in other countries that can help you. You should consider writing a business plan and discussing your plan with your parents who can help you more than any of us. Your answer is as easy (or as hard) as finding a need and filling it. Be the “go to” guy for whatever industry you choose whether you sell products, services or a combination. There are some known businesses that started at home… Coca Cola, Dell Computers, Microsoft, Ebay, etc. Why not add your business to that list??? Whether you run a lawn service, paint service, selling video games, designing websites, tutoring younger kids, or collecting aluminum cans… You can turn your time and energy into cash. You can also chat with your school’s guidance office about a work permit if you want to try working for an employer while starting up your business. Don’t wait for your ship to come in … Swim out to meet it.

Your Questions About Internet Business Ideas

Mandy asks…

How do you patent an idea?

Hi! For those of you who have done this or know someone who has successfully, how do i go about patenting an idea without getting ripped off?! I have a couple different ideas under different categories, so not sure if there are different places for each-like one is a certain kind of jewelry and the other is an internet Business idea:) I’m from the East Bay.
Thank you!
10 points for best answer! 😉

Jere answers:

First, you have to draw examples of what you have in mind and mail them to yourself. DO NOT OPEN THEM. The postmark determines that you have “prior art” meaning that you came up with the idea and that you can prove it to have existed before someone else’s.

You really need to check the www.uspto.gov site to make sure no one else has it.

You might run into much difficulty because patents have to be a) unique; and b) non-obvious. Meaning that if I say Oh, this shopping cart can also be used as a baggage transporter at the airport, that’s just another use, not an invention.

I’m not sure what you’re doing, but if the jewelry design has been done before or if the metal you’re using has been done before in jewelry or any kind of ornamentation, then you’re S.O.L. Similarly the internet business idea might be taken. That would fall under a patented methodology.

If your idea still proves to be unique, I would then suggest finding yourself an IP lawyer (intellectual property).

Richard asks…

I want to start a business I need ideas?

I have a 4 year degree in business. I would like to start a business. My main problem is that I am not sure what kind of business to start. I love music, but there is not good money is music for me so I would like to open a business with something that no my favor thing to do but something that can get the bills paid. I current work but if this business is good enough I could go full time.
Please someone lay out some ideas for me for business that I can start. I am not all that great on internet business. I like store front, but I am open to any suggestions.

Jere answers:

You can get a lot of ideas from every where, but you need to make SWOT (Strengts, Weakness, Opportunities and Threats) analysis of yourself, this will give you information what business is perfect for you. Maybe you will need a little bit time to do it, but it will be the most usefull time in your life.

Steven asks…

how do you go about finding investors for a completely internet based business?

Does anyone know where do you go to find investors to see if they might be interested in investing in your business? I’m planning to start up a new internet business which I think is pretty unique but I’m not sure how to find investors who maybe could help with marketing it and getting it known.

Jere answers:

Marketing and funding are completely different issues.

If you need additional funding to get your idea developed, you have a long road ahead of you. This would involve creating a business plan and a basic website (which you can do yourself), and getting in touch with another organization that can help you track down angel investors who may be interested in your deal. This is difficult because without a “prototype” funding companies will take up your time looking at your deal, but will almost never invest. Some sneaky funding companies already have “portfolio” companies they’ve invested in, and they’re looking to you for a free education and trade secrets they can apply to their own business. This is not fair, but there is hardly anything you can do about it, since it is you that needs the funding and it is almost impossible to get a potential funder to sign a non-disclosure agreement.

If, on the other hand, you’ve already done a substantial amount of work on the product and/or website so you can begin promoting it, there are a ton of ways to get your website “noticed”. Internet marketing techniques include blogs, news/press release submission to article engines, Google Adwords, Pay-Per-Click, email marketing, co-registration including paid solo ads, Squidoo, MySpace, search engine optimization (SEO), search engine URL submission, traffic engines, safelists, white papers, free ebooks with embedded promotional info, newsletters, etc.

William asks…

How to start a internet company in a third world country?

I’m from Nicaragua, i have various ideas for a internet company, I have partially the monetary resource to start it but the problem is Nicaragua does not have the market for a internet business so in other to make business ideas work i need a worldwide market like Mexico or the US, but how do i get customers if i´m here and they are there. and they are other problems that arrive too so anyone have any tips on how to make this happen?

Jere answers:

Internet and other modern facilities in third world countries are seem to be more profitable then that of countries of g8 because new ideas create new opportunities for the people and for the companies. For example, with the establishment of an internet company, a telecommunication company can also be established and it will ultimately create a Monopoly for the investor, because in third world countries there is no such things like internet…..
I think u should start ur business with low investment and see the results, if its good, continue it or else skip it….. As businesslike says NO RISK NO GAIN

Linda asks…

How would i advertise my internet based company?

I’m trying to think of an idea for an internet based company, but i want to know how to advertise.

I just want to know how i would advertise my internet business?

Jere answers:

Hey Matt,

I’d advise you to try to not pay for traffic first of all. A lot of quality traffic it free (i.e. Youtube, Facebook, Twitter). These are some of the top traffic sites on the internet.

Take advantage of these places, but if you want to make sure you’re maximizing these sites to their full potential, feel free to contact me. I’m more than happy to help you out.

Good luck!

Your Questions About Doing Business Online Government

Mary asks…

Legal Process in starting my own Online Business?

Looking to create a web development service online where me and some of my friends create websites for clients, plain and simple. We will have a couple employees, be based in Seattle Washington, and want to make sure we cover all our legal bases in creating a Professional Website and Service. What steps should we take? Paperwork and registration? Issue with income taxes? Regulations in having employees? A step by step detailed process on how we should go about legalizing our web-based business would be fantastic. Any and all help is greatly appreciated, thank you very much for your time.

Jere answers:

First do your business plan. Get online and look for the nearest SBDC center near you. It’s government funded so you can get business coaching/entrepreneurial advice for FREE. Go pick up a book on starting a business in Washington and it will tell you all you need to know to register your business. When you register, use LegalZoom it’s the cheapest way to set up and register your business. Make sure you get an attorney and a CPA to help you set this up right. Chances are you can find an attorney or CPA from SCORE to give you free advice as well.

Donna asks…

Sales Licence / business licence do I need one selling online?

what’s the different between a sales licence and a business licence and do i need them selling on ebay and accepting payment from paypal as business account, also my location of business is commerical.

Jere answers:

Business licence is different from sales licence. Business licence is issued by municipal authorities or government. Sales licence is issued by sales tax authorities. You have to issue bill to the transaction so you need licence for ebay though many selling on ebay are not aware of it.

James asks…

How do I find information on government grants and/or government loans for starting up a new business?

I am in need of funding for business equipment and software to start my own business from home. I have seen commercials regarding government money being out there and available for all sorts of reasons like, business start up, buying a home, renovations, debt consolidations, etc. But, these commericals are advertised by people who want a fee for the information on these grants and loans. I have always figure that if they could find this information then I should be able to also. And, I have looked on and off for awhile now and can only find information if I pay a fee to someone else. Does anyone have any suggestions or has anyone actually received one of these loans and/or grants?

Jere answers:

It is hard to find grants to start a business. Unlike the myths that some perpetuate, federal government and even private foundations hardly give grant money for a for-profit business. And yes, grants mean PAPERWORK – lots and lots of it, that is why a cottage industry of grant writers was born.

For private grants, you may want to check the Foundation Center’s Foundation Grants for Individuals Online.

You stand a better chance of getting a government loan. For government loans, read the requirements of SBA: http://www.sba.gov/financing/preparation/requirements.html

Chris asks…

Do business books still apply?

I have a decent amount of business knowledge, but I am looking to purchase a book or two to fill in the gaps in my knowledge and am wondering, Do business for dummies or business 101 books written 5 years ago still have applicable principles today after all of the economic changes?

Jere answers:

Yes

The basics of business has not changed. Whether you do business online or in Main Street, the tenets remain the same:

– create products of value that people will want to buy
– identify your target market and learn how to reach them
– manage your costs of doing business well
– know and understand government regulations

For example, I still read Kawasaki’s “Art of the Start” which was published in 2004 as everything he wrote remains relevant to this day. Of course, sections on marketing do not include social media such as Twitter or Facebook but a lot of the basics still hold true http://www.amazon.com/Art-Start-Time-Tested-Battle-Hardened-Starting/dp/1591840562

Charles asks…

Does anyone know where I can apply for grants without being charged?

I would like to start a business.

Jere answers:

Yes you go directly to the Government Department. Do not bother looking this up online, they are rip offs. For example The Department of Commerce in Washington DC, would issue grants, The Department of Labor, The National Institute of Health. Also, you can do this, there is a site called Grants.gov. Look the grant up on this site and then go directly to the source listed in the information for that particular grant and apply yourself. You don’t need anyone else to help you to fill out forms from the Government.

Good Luck.

Also, the Government sponsors a thing called SCORE and that is retired business/government employee’s that help with any questions you might have about getting government funding. Also try the Small Business Administration because they sponsor loans through the banks. It is better to get a grant than it is to get a loan because a grant never has to be repaid. START CHECKING THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT AGENCIES.

Your Questions About The Real Biz

James asks…

Real Estate?

If Your House Cost 200,000 U.S. Dollars Then What Would Be The Monthly Payments

Jere answers:

If you could get a loan with no down payment (almost impossible), then around $1200. That does not include taxes, insurance, maintenance, utilities, etc.
If you have a down payment, you just need a mortgage calculator to find out what your payments will be:
http://www.hawaiihome.biz.z57preview.com/mortgage_center.shtml

Robert asks…

Anybody ever used nosha.biz to buy steroids?

I was woundering if the website was selling real stuff.

Thanks

Jere answers:

Yes.

I found http://nosha.biz/anabolic.html on Yahoo Answers about 3 weeks ago.

I tried their Free Trial Offer and received Anabol for free. To my surprise they were real steroids.

So I made an order 1 week ago of Deca, Anabol and Stanol and received them 3 days ago. The products are legit.

Their prices for Injectable Steroids are a little high, but the Oral Tablets are dirt cheap.

I have tried other websites and wasted a lot of money not receiving my products or receiving Herbal Anabolic Steroids. Herbal Anabolic Steroids are advertised as Pharmaceutical Grade, but not Anabolic Steroid Grade. I realized that all tablets or vials are Pharmaceutical Grade even Herbal Anabolic Steroids.

I love the fact that they offer a Free Trial Offer. This Offer saved me a lot of time and money to find what I was looking for.

Cheers.

Jenny asks…

Interested in real estate?

I am a college student and am interested in learning about real estate, but I have no clue how to start. I bought a book, but I think it’s the next step, I need something to fill the gap.

– Can anyone direct me to a website with a beginners guide?

– If someone could write maybe a paragraph or two as an introduction that would be great.

– If I wanted to get started in real estate out of college, how would you recommend I start?
As for which aspect, I mean investing in real estate.

Jere answers:

If you are considering residential sales, I would strongly suggest that you partner with someone that has been in the business for awhile… You could be their Buyer’s Agent and run buyers.

Why I suggest this is because it is difficult to start right into the business (at least in my market) and hit the ground running. You probably won’t have a list of prospects or clients of your own, so you can work with another agent and split the commission. There is no better teacher than doing it and learning on the job.

But, I’m getting ahead of myself… First, you must take whatever courses are mandatory in order for you to sit for your real estate licensing exam (assuming that you wish to pursue real estate sales). Before you can sit for your exam, you have to interview potential Brokers… Yes, you interview Them! Figure out which one suits you best… Offering the best training, or freebies, etc. As possible.

While you interview Brokers… Talk to the person you meet with about Teaming up with someone and if they have anyone in the office looking for a Buyer’s Agent. Again, I cannot suggest this strongly enough! You have nothing but to benefit from this and you can structure your Team/Partnership anyway that works. Your Team Leader, knowing that you are new into the biz will act as your mentor… Sharing bits & pieces from their own years of experience and really save you some of the struggles from the ‘trial & error’ method that most of us start out with.

Once you’ve entered into the biz, attend as many meetings as possible, tour homes, go to open houses, and try to interact with the public as much as possible. Oh, and don’t forget to tell everyone that you know that you are “now in the real estate business” and to ask your closest contacts (friends & family) for real estate referrals.

When I was in class, there was some statistic mentioned by one of my teachers of like 60% of new agents failing in the business (perhaps it is more these days). There was never really any mention on why newbies fail. Prospecting. Prospecting and obtaining actual clients is probably the most difficult asset an Agent can obtain just starting out. Also, there are fees, dues, and other incidentals that absorb money along the way… Afterall, you are now your own boss! So, it helps to sustain your new career ramp up by having a bit of savings to draw on for awhile.

Again, just starting into the biz, it is the most beneficial to “run buyers” for someone than to be a ‘one stop shop’… At least in the beginning! Being someone’s Buyer’s Agent will give you their client base to work with (right away). You won’t have advertising expenses, as they will be taking the listings (not you). And, you can sit their Open Houses to prospect for new buyers!

Well, I hope this wasn’t too long winded… Good luck in your future career!!

Cheers.
