Charles asks…

We have a business simulation board game. Is there a way to do this online?

Jere answers:

Just like Monopoly is available online, so is business simulation. There are some online business simulation site like the cybernation (http://www.cybernations.com/) and Informatist ( http://www.informatist.net/ ), which do a good job of showing the fundamentals of business. You can find more via wiki. The game like those are named “economic game”.

Donald asks…

Is there a game like this online: Multiplayer business game?

Is there a game where i can play multiplayer with my friends only, like no public room. Or host private match. In which we could open up shops/resturants and play multiplayer. Preferably on facebook.
Also there should be no pay to win thing in there, so like if you are lossing you then you could just buy objects with real money/facebook money.

Jere answers:

Nope, no such game like that… Sorry about that….

Good luck!

Sandra asks…

Has anybody got any good online games?

Your Questions About Business Online Payroll

Linda asks…

How do I calculate Employer’s NICs in Sage Instant Payroll?

Last tax year, I was calculating my Payroll and believed everything was in order. However, the balancing feature of Sage Instant Payroll told me that I owed money. I showed my accountant the workings from the program, and she told me that I should not have entered the total income from my client as gross pay once NICs started to kick in. She explained I had in fact overpaid. My accountant then said I should have deducted the 12.8% Employer’s NICs first and then used the result as gross. How do I do this when, if I enter a reduced gross amount, Sage will surely calculate an Employer’s NICs amount that is incorrect as it will be too low? My accountant is not familiar with Sage, so any help would be most appreciated.

Thomas asks…

help choosing computer for small business?

I am looking for information to help me decide on what computer to purchase for my new small business, used car lot. I don’t know much about computer purchases or where to start.
I will be using the computer to order credit report, financing, storing inventory, no payroll.
Thank you!

Jere answers:

For your case, your starting point is to decide which software will suit your needs.

Credit reports are just an online browser app so there’s no requirement there. Financing is a big variable. In many cases your finance sources will probably be an online app also, again with no special requirements, but if you have some kind of in-house financing that you need software for, that software can increase your system requirements. Lastly, inventory – if you’re just tracking your lot inventory, a basic Excel spreadsheet or easy MS Access Database is sufficient.

But you will probably want to include some bookkeeping/taxes such as Quicken.

So, if I’m right that your financing is basically all online to your loan providers, you computer hardware is pretty basic. Based on your description I’d recommend getting a name brand with good support like HP or Dell.

Here’s a Dell Configuration that I’d recommend for you. Hopefully the configuration link will work. If not, email me and I’ll send you the info.

John asks…

Quickbooks payroll… I run a small company and will be hiring about 6 total employees..?

Is quickbooks payroll easy to use? I get very confused with alot of the accounting part of the business. I have an accountant that does all of it, but I dont want to pay someone to do the payroll as I would like to handle it myself. Also which quickbooks payroll should I look to get?

Thanks

Jere answers:

We use QuickBooks for our checks, etc. That go to clients and it’s really simple for that. I can reconcile and everything right online in 5 minutes. We use ADP for our actual employee payroll which is PAINFULLY simple but probably too expensive to set up for fewer than 20 employees.
This one looks easy too https://www.paycycle.com/external/home.jsp

Business Jobs Question?

Going for accounting. I am attending a community college my sat score was a 1260 in high school and i am around a 3.4 gpa in college and i will be going for my masters i want to become a financial advisor is a 3.4 a good gpa to get a great accounting job? any tips would be appreciated?

Jere answers:

Things You’ll Need
Résumé
Computer
Internet access
Newspaper
1
Look for entry-level positions advertised in the classifieds and online career websites like Monster, Careerbuilder and HotJobs. Although the majority of accounting professionals and firms will want to hire people with experience, a good deal of the accounting firms also offer entry-level positions. Entry-level candidates are less experienced, so the firm has the opportunity to train them in the way the company does business. Entry-level positions also pay less due to the lack of experience, and many companies would prefer to save in payroll costs rather than having to pay a higher salary for a more experienced and seasoned candidate.

2
Get educated in accounting principles, practices and accounting software programs. Even if you don’t have real-world accounting experience yet, get as much training as you can in an accounting degree program at a university or enroll in community college courses with a focus on business accounting and bookkeeping. You will learn valuable accounting principles, and the professional training you receive will make you a much more appealing candidate to accounting firms and businesses.

3
Apply for jobs in related fields. Seek work as a bookkeeper, accounts receivable clerk or even an accounting assistant position. Even a job as a cashier requires the ability to balance a cash drawer and provide accounting at the end of the shift. As you learn skills and gain experience from one job, you will be able to translate that experience into another position until you work your way up to the perfect accounting job.

4
Send your résumé and letter of interest to companies advertising for accounting positions even if you do not feel that you meet the minimum qualifications. Explain in your letter of interest that you do not yet have the experience they desire, but you are motivated and willing to learn. Request consideration as an intern or entry-level trainee. A company might be willing to take a chance on training you even though you don’t yet have experience.

David asks…

T-shirt business – Inc., Corp., LLC., ?

I’ve started a t-shirt company that should be fully functioning within the next two weeks. I hired a larger company to promote, keep inventory, ship, handle customer service, etc. So nothing will be home-based and everything will be sold strictly online until I find a few retailers (which I do plan on doing). I live in the state of Florida and would like to register my company with the state. What is the difference between LLC, Inc. Corp., etc.? What would a company like mine, register under?

Jere answers:

Inc (short for Incorporated) and Corp (short for Corporation) are identical; it is just how you want to designate it in your company name and is a preference choice.

You would need to decide if you wanted a “C” corp (full-fledged deal), an “S” corp (still operates like a small business tax-wise, but gets some corporate protections), and an “LLC” (very similar to an “S” corp in most respects).

Your legal exposure is very minimal; your shirts are unlikely to cause damage or injury unless you are using toxic inks or there is cotton in your shirts that was grown next door to that Japanese nuclear plant that is leaking, so the legal protections offered by a corp structure are not so important to you. In fact, they may add some complication in terms of having to file both company and personal tax returns, maintain a business banking account, state business income/franchise taxes, etc.

Your main interest then is in the way taxes are treated. You can best review these with your CPA (you should hire one for at least this consultation, and consider using them to file your state and federal forms for you annually; so much easier and worth the cost). With a “C” corp, you need to drain the cash assets annually through payroll so you don’t end up with a taxable profit, which when you distributed that profit later is a non-deductible dividend expense to the company and a taxable dividend earning to you personally.

“S” and “LLC” arrangements are treated more like a partnership or sole proprietorship arrangement tax-wise.

You will have to open a business account at your bank because payments you receive payable to your company cannot be deposited to any other account, even if you endorse it to yourself. So you have those fees to account for in your business plan.

Good luck.

Your Questions About Business Online San Diego

Lizzie asks…

Best place to buy ford parts online?

Just curious, does anyone know the best place to buy Ford parts online?

Jere answers:

For vintage parts IMHO Dennis Carpenter Ford (http://www.dennis-carpenter.com/), if they don’t have it I do a search of Hemmings Motor News.
If the Ford is newer then that, about all parts places are the same, unless a real Ford part is needed. Then you have to deal through a dealership any way. Shipping quickly offsets any savings.
Now if you want Ford Racing Parts, Summit Racing is competitive with any body in the business and they have a reputation to maintain. So places that give lower prices don’t stay around too long (take the money and run because the parts are counterfeit).
Some times obsolete old stock can be found on e-bay and so can new parts. But not all parts are as they appear because importing counterfeits from China is so cheap. However (one more time) shipping costs can quickly eat up any savings.
Now the hard part about dealerships is that some do not want to bother with depot items or those that require a lot of research to find in the system. If you live in a major metropolitan area the odds of finding a good parts person will be difficult. I say this because in 1978 I was looking for parts for a 1968 Falcon in San Diego, all the dealerships there said Ford no longer made parts for them. However in 1984 while living in New Mexico (yes this is part of the US) the dealership there would order parts (depot) for the same car.
So if you can find a good parts person at the dealership and you want Ford parts- that is where to go for Ford parts.

Michael asks…

What city has the hightest sales tax: Las Vegas, San Diego, San Francisco or Chicago?

Want to get an ipod on a future trip I´m making to these cities.

Jere answers:

Chicago – 9.00%
San Francisco – 8.50%
San Diego – 7.75%
Las Vegas – 7.75%

Chicago has the highest sales tax, San Diego and Las Vegas the lowest. So if you want to buy it in person, I’d suggest buying in SD or Las Vegas.

Also, I just wanted to suggest that you might want to consider buying it online. You could avoid all sales tax if you buy online, as long as the company that you purchase from doesn’t have a significant “presence” (like a business office or warehouse) in your state. (Technically, though, you are liable for “use taxes” on the purchase.)

Happy shopping!

Joseph asks…

How to start an online business?

Well this summer I want to do somthing fun so i thought why not open a business line. i want to designs shirts first then move on to designing mugs, purses, etc.

These are the following things I need help with:

1. Where to start?
2. Where Can I buy those printers that directly prints it on the material? For under.. at least 300? if possible.. if not please recommend cheaper alternatives.
3. Where can i open a free website for my stuff?
4. & lastly, My clothing brand is going to have a name.. so do i need a permission for that or anything?

THANKS!

Jere answers:

Congrats! I think you have a great start already.

1. Start simple. I would get a feel for the market before you invest too much on a website or materials.

2. Rather than spend your capital on a printer…save it and utilize a service like Cafepress to handle it for you.

3. There are a myriad of free services but you will need to process payments. This type of website usually requires at least a small monthly payment.

4. If you will be operating a business you will need to follow regulations. Check the SBA for regulations in your state (http://www.sba.gov)

When you are ready to hit the ground runnning, there is a lot you can do to promote yourself. You may find the following article on my blog useful:
http://danimariedesigns.com/blog/?p=33

In regards to your first question, I strongly suggest starting out using CafePress. (http://www.cafepress.com ) They will handle the customer service/ returns, payment processing, and printing. This way you can focus on the marketing and design! It’s free to start but I would upgrade your shop to take full advantage. This way you can use your own domain name and really customize the look of your store. (as well as have an unlimited number of products).

If you don’t already have photoshop you can start by using Paint.Net. It’s an opensource copycat of photoshop. (http://www.GetPaint.net )

I hope that helps!!

Nancy asks…

I need IT backup/storage advice!?

I’m getting more and more weary that we aren’t backing up our computers at work and that I really need to find a good solution that doesn’t cost a fortune, yet still leaves the data readily available for quick access…

We’re only a small budget so I don’t really want to buy a tape drive etc. (Aren’t they old tech now anyway?)

Is it worth getting a Blueray Recorder? some sort of NAS? Stick to DVD-Rs?

Do hard drives keep the data on them for many years even if they aren’t plugged in? Can they be kept in box without the data deteriorating?

Any helpful advice warmly welcomed!

Thanks,

Ben

PS – We’ve got about 500GB to backup!! so that’s a LOT of DVD-Rs… hence wondering if a couple of 1TB HDDs are the way to go!!!

Jere answers:

You could use a couple of TB HDD, however most Business dont use hard copy backups in case of theft. It all depends what work needs to be backed up. The best thing to use is online storage, then if anything goes wrong or you need to access info from somewhere else in the world etc then its easy to do and you dont have to take physical backups.

You can find lots of online storage sites for small Business that would be cheaper than buying HDD etc. Do your research and try and look at reviews

Robert asks…

how to start an online business?

Jere answers:

First, you need a web hosting service which supports online payments like, Master Card, Visa & Pay Pal. It is very important that your service to be uptime. It means that you can access your account whenever you want to update your web pages, and your visitors can view your website whenever they input your website address. If your hosting service is not uptime it is a real hell!

If you want to run a successful e-commerce you must choose a reliable web hosting service. The security of your business directly depends on the security of your hosting service. (Hacker safe)

You can take a look at: http://top3hosts.atspace.com/business

There you can reach the five reputable companies that are leaders in the E-commerce web hosting industry.

However, as an experienced webmaster I recommend Inmotion Web Host which I’m sure it would work for you and fulfill all your requirements. Mary asks…

External hard drive for small business–any suggestions?

I’m thinking of getting my husband an external hard drive for Christmas. He runs his own business, and does a lot of work on his computer. He stores client information, spreadsheets, images, videos, website administration info, etc. My dad was telling me that an external hard drive could automatically save all new data periodically, and I’m thinking it would be great for my husband to have one.

The problem is that I know nothing about them. What should I look for? I don’t want to pay for more than he’ll need, but don’t know enough about computers to pick one. Advice would be very welcome!

Jere answers:

You should buy him a Western Digital External Hard Drive. A 500GB is a lot of storage and inexpensive. The nicer ones have a button (One Touch Backup OTB) but they are kind of gimmicky. Amazon has one, but you can also wait for sales from your local office supply store (Office Depot, Staples, Best Buy, Circuit City). But this onlly prevents problems with hardware when the computer might die.

You also need to get him a free subscription to Mozy. It is free online backup up to 2GB. Mozy is nice because keeps “versions” of your document, so if you need to retrieve his spreadsheet from one week ago, you can do that through Mozy. Using an external hard disk wouldn’t help you going to previous copies (unless you kept multiple folders with different dates — kinda confusing). Anyway, if you store more than 2GB Mozy will charge you. So, maybe your husband can just backup his most important stuff up to 2GB online and put everything else on the external hard drive.

Total cost under $100 out the door.

Your Questions About Business Online Games

Mark asks…

Online gaming website?

Hello,
I have made a retro-gaming website. I am going to host it sooner. Can you guys/girls tell me how to make it become popular please? And then perhaps I will start using it for fees and make more websites and probably turns this into a small business if I success in it!

So how to make it become popular? Do you think people would like to play it? I dont have the link for it now since I havn’t hosted it yet but soon enough I will post on my first post here and you guys can check it out by then and give me a response
JUICE: Whats your xfire, msn, yahoo id?

Jere answers:

Contact me and maybe i’ll host the game for you on my server. As for making the game popular, my goal is to get a lot of games together under one “roof” and then we can get players from many different areas to join up and play. As players come to play one game, they’ll be more tempted to play others at the same place.

Posting your game on game sites is a good idea too. A lot of people like to check out new games they find on those sites.

If you’re only interested in free advertising, then talking about the game to friends, getting them to play, and getting them to talk to their friends about it is going to be the best way. Using facebook to get the information to your friends is probably the fastest, then get them to post to all their friends, etc.

My site is http://www.gamesoda.com You can contact me there, or through here.

Fun free online game?

I play League of Legends currently and still like it, but I cant play it all day, so i’m looking for a new game to play. I’ve played Guild Wars, toontown, Yugioh online, MTG online, WoW(and didnt like it), LOTR:BFME 2, C&C3, etc. It needs to be free, online, fun multiplayer, and a download is ok and i’m not talking like Bloons TD, I mean an actual game you can progress through.
I’ve actually played Wizard 101 too.
I forgot to mention and thought it was implied, but it needs to be for the computer.

Any similar online games to JamLegend?

I used to love that game, but then when it closed in April 2011, i was so devastated… So I remembered how i used to play it alot and i’m interested if there are other similar games like that… If anything comes to mind please respond!!

Jere answers:

They are called games online video games played via Internet. In them, a player with a video game or computer connected to the network can play with others without the need to both be in the same environment, without leaving home, the player can challenge opponents that are elsewhere in the country or even the world. All in real time, as if the other were side by side, so that this category of games opens new perspectives of fun. However, some factors currently hinder its dissemination: the high price of broadband connection and monthly fees that many games require. There is also to consider that many of them require constant updating of equipment, raising the cost of fun.

The first online gaming business began to appear in 1991 and were played via direct binding site. Players conectavam among themselves calling home from their “enemies” via modem to their computer and telephone line. Before this year, it was possible to play online but it was quite necessary technical expertise and above all, patience. The first online game was released for the Apple II and was a version of a chess game that accompanied the adapted system.

Around 1992, they started to become popular games via [BBS]. A user connected to the service and challenged several opponents, yet still could only play with one of them. But the opportunity to join a community, chat and choose who play opened up a new world of fun. It was then that the first online games began to be successful and attract more players. Doom (in its first version), Descent (spaceship game), F-15E Strike Eagle (game hunts) among others.
In 1994 the BBS progressed and became great national services, integrating a large number of cities and thousands of players: they were online services such as CompuServe and America Online.
[Edit] Internet
By 1995 the advantages that the Internet offered were much larger and more attractive. Achieving world, freedom to play anywhere and without paying. It was then that emerged games with interfaces tailored for networking and online play, such as Doom 2, Descent 2, Heretic, MechAssault, among others.

[Edit] Broadband
By 1997, with the arrival of high-speed connections accessible to the general public online games have become serious business. Your Questions About Business Online Backup

Robert asks…

what site is the best for storing valuable data online?

my moveable hardware drive was broken last week, i losted some valuable data. i have to restore it and get my data. then i think whether i can upload the data to a site, store them online. so could you tell me what site is the best for storing data online. in addition it is better to backup.
thanx

Jere answers:

I am a technical consultant serving small businesses. Most of my clients need an easy and robust backup service to protect business documents. Before I saw this service, I was only able to offer local backup service, which is not secure enough. Now DriveHQ really enables me to offer Remote / Offsite backup service. The coolest thing with this service is it can encrypt/decrypt files transparently; this level of security is a requirement for lots of my clients, esp. Law firms, accounting firms and clinics, etc.

Betty asks…

Is Shutterfly good enough backup?

Recently, I’ve found myself taking more and more pictures and it’s starting to clog up my hard drive. I’m looking to back up the pictures online (or elsewhere, if that would be better). I usually put SOME of my pictures on Shutterfly so I can print them. Would putting ALL my photos on Shutterfly and just using that as the backup be sufficient or should back it up else online?

Jere answers:

If you want a backup then do it on an external hard drive rather than on-line.
What is to say that the on-line site won’t suddenly go out of business and you can never get the images back – it has happened before.

By all means have the on-line but your best back for a back up is to have it on a physical drive which only you have access to and which is not subject to the vagaries of the commercial world.

Michael asks…

What is needed in order to offer online storage and backup services.?

I would like to know more , as much as in detail as possible, about the equipment and infrastructure needed in order to run and offer a small/mid size online storage service. The idea is to offer secure online file storage hopefully also including cloud technologies. i would like to know info regarding equipment, technology, human resources, types of workers..etc any info is much appreciated. (and yes, i am aware of the extensive competition in the industry, im planning on having very narrow and specific target market focus).

Jere answers:

The rapid technological advancement embraces the lifestyle of everyone. As digitalization brings convenience the level of uncertainty also rises. In today’s world information and data plays vital role in success and growth – especially for businesses. Online storage provides you with maximum accessibility to all important documents and files. Carol asks…

Email backup of my yahoo account?

Please inform me if there is a way to have a backup of my emails at Yahoo (Small Business Email Account)

Jere answers:

Hey Halim, the way to back up or archive your Yahoo! Business Email mailbox is through POP or possibly IMAP. The difference between the two would be that POP downloads only what is in the Inbox and the Spam folder while IMAP syncs all folders. POP only downloads whereas IMAP actually syncs which means that it will try to stay current to whatever is currently on the Yahoo! Server so if you delete an email online, the same email will be deleted from your email client which will not happen in POP by default.

So if you are looking to archive your emails before you close your plan with Yahoo!, IMAP could be the fastest way for your to back up your entire mailbox although if you are just trying to keep a backup of your oldest emails so you can remove them from the server, then POP may be the best option for you.

You can find resources for both processes from here:

“POP and IMAP Access”
http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/smallbusiness/bizmail/pop/index.html

If you have any issues with this, you can contact us directly by going here:

http://smallbusiness.yahoo.com/contactus

We hope this helped and good luck!

George asks…

Does anyone know what the steps are to selling baby products online??

i am a stay at home mom and I want to open an online baby store and i already have a domain and i am building the website but does anyone know what the process is to selling brand name items on my website?? and how do i get a whole salers attention for my online business??…and do i have to have a degree to open an online business??

Jere answers:

I have interviewed years ago the owner of an online baby store called GenuisBabies.com http://www.powerhomebiz.com/OnlineSuccess/geniusbabies.htm and one of the main difficulties she faced when starting up was buying from wholesalers. It was not that easy to get an account with wholesalers, and they wanted minimum orders that she could hardly meet. I suggest you read the article and look at her website to see how she’s doing it. It took her 6 months to receive her first order, but after several years the business is now doing very well that her husband has left his job to work with her on the business full time.

You have to first get a seller permit or sales license from your state. That is the first thing wholesalers will be looking at. You don’t need a degree, but they would look at your website to see how well it fits with their vision for their products (some manufacturers are picky where their products are sold).

One of the best and quickest way to develop relationships with wholesalers and get accounts with them is to meet them during trade shows. Go to http://www.tsnn.com for a list of baby products/services trade show and see which ones you can attend. Here are the upcoming trade shows for this sector:

In terms of creating your website, one article that I found very useful is “7 Steps to Successful Web Site Development” http://www.powerhomebiz.com/vol142/website.htm as it takes to you all the decision steps that you need to take when starting an online business. Like any other business, startup period is full of “should I do this” or “should I do that” questions. The article is useful because it helps you think through every step of the way – from why do you want a website to who is your audience to how will you create your website to how you will market your new website.

Here are the steps you need to take when creating your online business:

STEP 1: Set Your Goals – Why do you want a web site? What is the size of the online market? What are the goals for your website?

STEP 2: Develop Your Web Site Strategy – Who is your website target audience? What typically appeals to your target audience? How are the other websites (your competition) reaching out to this target audience? How will you measure your performance?

STEP 3: Set-Up Implementation Plans – What name will you give to your site? How do you envision the design of your web site? How will you create your website? How will you create your content? How will you maintain your website?

STEP 4: Start the Ball Rolling – Do you have a logo? For e-retailers, do you have the critical components needed to run an e-commerce site? How are you going to host your site?

STEP 5: Create and Launch Your Web Site – Have you uploaded your site with your chosen web host provider? Are the scripts and application you need for your website functioning well? Have you tested your website?

STEP 6: Promote Your Web Site and Measure Its Results – Do you have a plan in place to market your website? Do you regularly review your traffic logs and web site performance tracker? How are you going to get sites to link to you? Do you know the search engine keywords that you rank well? If your site is not visible in the search engine results pages for its keywords, what strategies do you intend to do?

STEP 7: Maintain Your Website and Grow Your Web Business – Continue to find ways to grow your web business. How do you intend to continue your education on web development?

Sandra asks…

In general, how much are online classes in college?

I know each college is different and it goes by credit hour, but what would be a good guesstimate? Per class? I was thinking $500-600, am I wrong?

If you have experience taking an online class, share that as well!

Jere answers:

It honestly depends on the school, but the schools I work with range from $425-500 cost per credit. Which includes the tuition, books, fees, etc.

Like the previous comment – you can take a free college course at www.testdrivecollege.com. It is a free online course that can transfer to any of their partnering schools. This can save you $1,000 or more for one college class.

A few of the partnering non-profit regionally accredited schools it can transfer to are:

Urbana University:
Business Administration
Business Administration with an emphasis in Health Care Managment
elearning.urbana.edu

San Diego Christian College (faith based)
Christian Ministries
Business Administration
Human Development
elearning.sdcc.edu

Southwestern Christian College (faith based)
Business Management
Business Leadership
Biblical Leadership
Human and Family Services
elearning.swcu.edu

I hope that helps! Best of luck on your educational hunt.

Sandra asks…

Best Bank for Small Business Account?

I have an online website and I’m getting ready to open the online store. I need to get my DBA (doing business as) and then get a small business account at a bank. What is the best bank to go with?

Jere answers:

The best bank that I have seen so far for a small business is Bank of America. When I used them they did not charge me any fees like most banks will, and you can get basic online access along with a Visa Debit Card at no additional cost. If later down the road you need to do payroll and bill payments, they can offer these to you at a minimal additional cost.

Chris asks…

What is “online Payroll Data Entry Processor/Home Typist position”?

A friend refers me for this position. I email the employer for such position. – The employer then send me a mail that this is an online job. which requires me to make some data entry to some selected company and in return they will pay me $50 thru Paypal per process. – but I have to enroll first with some “amount” for the starter kit.
– or is this real??how?

Jere answers:

They are a rip off. I was scammed recently. If it sounds too good to be true, it is.
The companies promote their business one way BEFORE you pay & as soon as you pay it is something completely different then you signed up for.
Make sure to check RipoffReport.com & the BBB before sending your money anymore.

Susan asks…

how do i start a dive charter business?

???

Jere answers:

First…ask yourself if you want to start a business or just be able to go diving whenever and wherever you want to. If the answer is YES, I want to start a business, then you will need customers first of all. Then a retail establishment to stock your supplies from, because a dive boat doesn’t make a lot of money, but selling stuff to your customers makes a bunch! Decide if you want to base it from the USA or a foreign country, like Belize or Cost Rica, or where-ever. If it’s a foreign country, check with their gov’t and find out what the fees, taxes, regulations, etc. Are for having a charter business in their waters. In Costa Rica, it amounts to 20 pieces of paperwork, all certified of coourse, and paying taxes totalling about 35% of the cost of your vessel. If your boat cost you $170,000 then you’ll pay about $60K in taxes just to get to tie up to the dock.
If you want to run from the USA, then look for a business already started and running and then, if you have the experience and can convince a bank to loan the money or pull out your own checkbook, look it over very carefully and decide if it’s for sale for all the wrong reasons to buy it!
Some are just owners that have grown old of the same ol grind and just want to retire to a nice little spot and dive when they want to.
If you find a spot to take over, advertising and marketing are almost as big a part as the actual day to day operation. Also add in the taxes, fees, permits, captain’s license (you have one of those don’t you?) or a captain to run your dive boat, and insurance. Are you a certified SCUBA INSTRUCTOR? If not, you might want to make sure you have one on the payroll. If you are one, great! That’ll bring in some extra money.
If you just want to haul people out to the local dive spots, then you have to get or have the US Coast Guard Captains License called a 6-pack license i order to transport up to 6 paying customers to your dive site.
If you make a couple of trips a day, better have enough money for your fuel bill. Got a place to dock the boat? You’ll need a spot for people to come to to get on board. Advertising or a store front are very good for this. Do you have a web site? You’ll probably need one. It’ll help in the advertising dept and if you set it up right, people can book their trips online and pay with their plastic and you can sit back and watch all the stuff happen. Maybe… This is just a touch of the stuff you have to deal with.

Your Questions About Business Online Games

Susan asks…

online business game thats good and fun?

is their some real fun business tycoon games out there with no download???

Jere answers:

Hey,

Have you tried eRepublik? It’s a global economic, political, and military simulator, and it fits your description exactly.

It’s a really fun game, but the USA and Canada are in some trouble right now (being attacked by other nations), and we need new players!

So if you’re interested, and want to check it out, the link is below (we both get GOLD if you use the referer link, which can go to help the North American fight for freedom).

Have fun, and feel free to add me as a friend in game (my username is North Kanata).

Chris asks…

Business simulator game?

I was wondering if there is a game of business simulation like Farming simulator or sim city?Thank you

Jere answers:

I think you need to clarify your question a little more. What is the outcome you want to achieve?Depending on that I can suggest a variety of simulations from software based ones like SimVenture to online worlds for business like Sim-U or Bizdemy. There is even a MMOG called Geo that you can use at no cost.

William asks…

Wanting to play an online game with a business PC?

Hey guys, I bought a business PC about 2 months ago with a crappy business graphics card. I want to buy a Geforce graphics card so I can play games. What is the latest Geforce graphics card and would this fit into my PC?

Many thanks 🙂

Jere answers:

The speed of the graphics card depends on the psu (power supply unit)
you probably have a 300w psu.
The best for that is a geforce 9800gt or geforce gt240
both around $70 to $100 or (£60 to £90)
both of these will fit into your pcie slot on motherboard
these are mid range cards capable of playing even new games in mid to high settings.
Also you dont list the speed of your processor or amount of ram.
These also are a major factor in playing games

John asks…

How to start an online social game business?

this is my dream when im older, well in a few years actually. now i know you can get starting up loans for these things, but loans tend to disappear. and the game would be in development for a year or two, but i would need to higher programmers, digital artists, ect and i would need to pay them off the loan, but i would also need the programs, computers, office space, domain, servers .. this just seems like allot of money. and i don’t really know how to go about it. i was inspired by outsmart a company that developed small worlds. i live in quebec canada so anyone help?

Jere answers:

I think the best thing to do would be to get some experience with it all first. Yes, there have been a lot of inexperienced game creators, but they have been programmers who can do most things themselves. They then started off small, and built up to the massive server farms and teams of designers you see today.

Mark asks…

Any good online games?

Me and my friend want to play a free online game like RPG but NOT downloadable since it takes up to much space in our computers.
Please and thank you! (:

Your Questions About Business Online San Diego

Laura asks…

FlChams? Are they a legit business for ordering a chameleon?

I’m looking to get a chameleon. I happened upon their website, http://flchams.com/ , and it looked fine, aside from a few typos. Has anyone done business with them, are they okay? Thanks so much!

P.S. PLEASE no lessons on chameleon care. I’ve already done my research and read a bunch of websites and articles.

Jere answers:

Howdy,

Yep. Mike at FL Chams is a good source for chameleons. I’ve often met him, face-to-face at the big Reptile Super Shows in Pomona and San Diego, CA. I run the South Bay Chameleon Keepers (it’s a club!) booth at these shows to present free chameleon advice and education. Mike is one of the big sellers of chameleons both at the shows and online.

Plenty of his customers are keepers on the http://www.chameleonforums.com/forum.php

Mary asks…

Thinking about starting an online business. Where do I start?

I know what I want to sell.

Its not an invention its a product so no need for patents etc

Jere answers:

Congrats on your new venture! You have already reached step one, deciding to launch a business!

1. Make the decision to build a business
Believe it or not, this is an important step in making your vision a reality. Once you decide to move forward, the possibilities are endless.

2. Make a business plan.
Begin formulating your ideas into a tangible document. This will help you stay on track. As your business grows you can refer back to it for ideas and clarification. Writing a business plan doesn’t mean you are stuck to specific parameters. Think of it like a guide rather than a set of rules.

Here are some resources to help you with this step:
Elements of a Business Plan- http://www.entrepreneur.com/startingabusiness/businessplans/article38308.html
Business Plan Basics- http://www.sba.gov/smallbusinessplanner/index.html

3. Decide on a name
This will become part of your brand (step 5), however depending on your name you may need to file a DBA with your city. Choose a name that is unique to your business and speaks to your prospective clients. Get out a piece of paper and start writing down ideas. Ask colleagues, family, and friends their ideas to get the ball rolling. (Just don’t let them decide for you.)

Here is a good article on naming: http://www.sba.gov/smallbusinessplanner/start/nameyourbusiness/index.html

4. File necessary business licenses
These will be specific to your state and city. Check with the local SBA and SCORE for information.

SBA link: http://www.sba.gov

SCORE link: http://www.score.org/index.html

5. Build your brand
Your brand is what identifies your business to your customers. It should differentiate you from the competition and communicate your message to your target audience. Your business’ name, logo, and marketing materials are part of your business identity.

Here are some resources to help you with this step:
Connecting the Branding Dots: http://www.entrepreneur.com/marketing/branding/imageandbrandingcolumnistjohnwilliams/article198380.html
The Basics of Branding- http://www.entrepreneur.com/marketing/branding/imageandbrandingcolumnistjohnwilliams/article77408.html

6. Create your website
If you are operating solely online this step is essential. Take great care to find a web design company that has the expertise to create your vision. To develop an eCommerce store requires programming knowledge and an understanding of online marketing. Choose a company that can offer these services.

Here are some resources to help you with this step:
Working with a web developer- http://www.entrepreneur.com/ebusiness/buildingawebsite/article201528.html

eBusiness Info- http://www.entrepreneur.com/ebusiness/index.html

7. Market your website
Once your website has been launched, you will need to start marketing. If you haven’t already created business cards and traditional print. Now would be a good time. You should also market your business heavily online. Here are some ideas for marketing online:

a. Optimize your site for the search engines (SEO)
*your web design company should have a service which includes SEO
b. Add your business to the local directories (Google Maps is a great example)
c. Add your business to online classifieds (Craigslist is a great example)
d. Send newsletters with promotions (i.e 25% off shoes)
e. Buy advertising space on websites that your target market frequents
f. Analyze your web traffic to determine the best marketing avenue

Good Luck! Let me know if you have any questions, or need specific direction.

Going to San Diego and L.A. this weekend..any suggestions?

My family and I ages 17-24 will be in san diego all day friday and sat. morning and staying in downtown. Then in L.A. sat. afternoon – Monday afternoon, any suggestions on things to do and see in our little time at these places? Oh and none of us have ever been to Cali so any advice will help 🙂

Jere answers:

In La Jolla (not far from San Diego) there are lots of little businesses there solely to guide you through some really cool beach adventures. My husband and I did a snorkel/ Kayak one day and a surf class the next, these were tons of fun, it was a once in a life time experience. We got to snorkel with leopard sharks (totally harmless but really big and kind of scary) and we laughed the entire time we tried to surf, we are total beach people so this was awesome for us, plus both days started really early so we were done by early afternoon, I am not sure how much we paid (this was a gift from my husband) but I think it was $50.00 each, that included all the equiptment and wetsuits. If you guys can you should check it out, it was totally worth it! Check out this website and there are several of these businesses listed it you are interested you can call and set up an appointment. Also, in L.A. I see that no one listed the L.A. Farmers market, it has great food and a lot of history, I would stop at Gromans chinese theatre (not sure of spelling) in Hollywood, that is a quick trip that you have to see while in california, I wouldnt hit downtown disney, the shopping is overpriced and there really isnt much to do, universal citywalk is better, but of course if you can hit disneyland it is awesome, Also Newport beach has a place you can rent small boats for a couple of hours and drive around in a little bay like area, if you are up early in the morning on a saturday the orange county swapmeet is great, it is in the oc fairgrounds in costa mesa, I am sure you can get directions online. Can you tell I love california! Hope this helps!

Your Questions About Business Online Games

Richard asks…

what is the most profitable online retail business?

Jere answers:

The most profitable online businesses are the top tier programs that require some entrepreneurial courage and investment but allow you to earn a significant upfront income.

Most people have the idea that the economic crisis experienced these last couple of years was the worst time ever. But in actual fact, it has been the very best time to establish a home business.

There are so many home business opportunities and schemes to make money online. Yet, it is clear that many are just a scam. It is vital then that you know what constitutes a profitable business model for you.

With the ever-increasing number of both legitimate opportunities and rip-off scams, how do you know what is a honest AND profitable online business to start up and how do you know who to believe when you are researching what is out there?

I had exactly this dilemma. I tried all kinds of schemes and trainings and tools and systems before finally finding success. Now don’t get me wrong, I learned LOTS from my past attempts at a home based business, acquired many new skills. None of it was wasted. But I also wasted LOTS – lots of time and lots of money.

Sound familiar?

This is the reason I put this article together to try to explain some of the different home business models. There are so many variables both in the business you choose and in what YOU need to bring to it. I was doing all the right things but in the wrong way and with the WRONG business model.

The penny dropped when I was on the phone with a friend from that previous MLM. I saw him go from flat broke living in his mother’s basement to become a top producer earning over $50K every month. You see, he’d found a system that works. And after just a few months, I’m on track to follow exactly in his footsteps.

Once I discovered a highly profitable business model that suits what I want to achieve, I simply applied my knowledge and skills and could be successful. The ‘system’ is simply this: a highly profitable online business model. It offers top quality internet marketing education on the front end combined with a top tier product on the back end.

Let me explain some of the terms and the different kinds of home businesses you can start.

Brick and mortar businesses

This is where you buy or let premises for the purpose of selling products or services. This may be you use part of your home or outbuildings. Examples are a personal trainers, hairdressers, dog grooming, computer repairs. The capital you need to start up will be generally high and it may take several years before you are in profit.

Franchise business

Similar to traditional brick and mortar business, but with this model you are buying into a known-brand and premises. Examples are restaurants, cleaning companies. The business is already set up and you ‘manage’ the day to day running of the place. Again, the outlay is usually high, you have employees to hire and manage, and it may take several years before you start earning profits. An online alternative:

Internet based business

This is where your ‘shop’ is a website or a blog and you retail and sell products through online tools. There are various websites and templates you can buy outright or membership, such as lead capture pages, sales letters, as well as a whole host of tools that will help you manage customers and relationships with customers, such as shopping cart tools for product listing and credit card processing, email marketing for follow up.

For the newbie, it can be a massive learning curve to understand what is needed and to do it well. Once you have your online store set up, you must learn how to research your target audience (keyword research), how to advertise (without going bust), how to market to them (psychology of buying processes, writing effective sales copy, relationship building, etc) and how to convert them into buyers. It’s not an easy game.

There are some quick in-roads, such as ebay selling or affiliate marketing (selling other people’s products and using pre-made sales templates). The profit margins are pretty low so you will have to sell hundreds or thousands to make a decent income and there is very little residual income with this model.

Your Questions About Business Online Backup

Mandy asks…

I am starting up an internet business – what do web hosts actually do please?

Jere answers:

You need a web hosting service which supports online payments like, Master Card, Visa & PayPal. It is very important that your service be uptime. It means that you can access your account whenever you want to update your web pages, and your visitors can view your website whenever they type your website address. If your hosting service is not uptime it is real hell!

If you want to run a successful e-commerce you must choose a reliable web hosting service. The security of your business directly depends on the security of your hosting service. (Hacker safe)

You can take a look at: http://top3hosts.atspace.com/business

There you can reach the three reputable companies that are leaders in the E-commerce web hosting industry. They fulfill all your requirements to sell online. By using each of them, everything you need for your business website is provided in one eCommerce Hosting Package.

However, as an experienced webmaster I recommend Inmotion Web Host which I’m sure it would work for you and fulfill all your requirements. They have a really great offer for hosting & I have used them for over 3 yrs now, and have never had a single problem with them. (I run 2 business websites with them)

They are a Multi-awarded Web Hosting which offer a Full-featured service only $6.95 a month. Their service is really perfect and uptime.

InMotion has been voted #1 E-commerce Web Hosting. You can take a look at all their features at the address below:

http://top3hosts.atspace.com/in.htm

Here I have copied and pasted its features from their website to view:

– Free Domain
– Unlimited Space
– Unlimited Transfer
– Free Web Site Builder / Easy to Use Control Panel
– Front Page Extensions / Dreamweaver Compatible / Mambo and Joomla
– CGI, SSL Secure Server, FTP, Perl, PHP, PHP Nuke, MySQL

They also offer “Free Site Builder” that helps you build your web pages without difficulty if you are not skilled in using any website creating program. (WYSIWYG: What You See Is What You Get)

Sandra asks…

Business help !!!!!!!?

Hi,

I have set up a online business and was wondering if I could do something like little woods do.

You can buy things on finance so for example:
A pair of jeans: £15.00
Or pay just 0.75p for 20 weeks

I was wondering how I would go about doing this any ideas on who I should contact at all or any links I could look at?

Thanks for the help 🙂

Jere answers:

This will not be very easy as it is to do with the supplier contracts you have.

If the people that supply you with the items you sell can agree to be paid after your customers have paid, then you can get away with such an offer.
Then you have to look into credit checking of your buyers to ensure they are credit worthy or you will never get a payment.
In reverse, your suppliers also have to check you to ensure you can pay up out of your assets or whatever backup if your customers do not pay up.

Insurance will also be needed to protect yourself/business.

As you can see, this is very messy and my advise will be for you to grow your business through other means. Cheap/attractive terms will get you a lot of customers in the short run but may throw you out of business. Littlewoods and many catalog companies have a very long history and can afford that kind of arrangement.

If you still think this is a good way to go, the first point of contact will be your suppliers and business insurance providers, for more detailed advise.

Maria asks…

book digitizing business?

There are many online businesses where people send in their books to be digitized. This is perfectly legal. It is digitized for private use. I am asking what legal considerations I should take before starting this business.

I own a scanner.

People have to send a copy of their book with no suspicion of being a library book. I will scan their book and send it back to them along with a CD digital copy. I am going to charge 8 cents per page. Does anyone see any problems with this?

Jere answers:

You are reproducing someone else’s work, without their permission. That’s a copyright violation.

Incidentally, if you duplicate video tapes, or CDs, or DVDs without the permission of the copyright holder, that’s copyright violation too. I asked about this once, because my daughter had been on a TV show, and I wanted to get it duplicated for backup. The TV show was copyrighted, and so no reputable copy service would do it.

You’d have to get some sort of license and permission from the copyright owners to do this, legally.

Edit: Actually, I DO know what I’m talking about. Way back when cassette tapes and video tapes first came into use, this issue was brought to court. The end result was that a levy was imposed on blank media, and the proceeds of that levy was distributed to various producers of music and shows by way of copyright collectives.

It’s not illegal to digitize a book that you yourself own. It’s illegal to digitize a book for someone else.

Of course, when starting a business, it’s always a good idea to consult a lawyer. In person. So I suggest that the asker do that. Of course, the asker will have to pay money for specific legal questions like this. While lawyers will give free consultations, usually they will only answer things like “Are you experienced in this area of the law, and what are your credentials?”.

James asks…

Setting up a small business network?

Okay, so I have no real experience with setting up networks and need to set one up for a small business. I am very tech/PC savvy though, so dont worry about using technical terms etc.

Basically we have three PCs two of which are used for accounts and one for CAD work and we need the ‘my documents’ folder to become a common folder for all three PCs so that any file saved or created will be immediately accesible by all three PCs directly. We tried using a ‘shared folder’ on the network, but its not very conveniant.

Ideally this setup would involve a network server that acts as the primary storage system for which all three PCs share their files in one place at any time regardless of whether the other two PCs are turned off or not. It would also act as a backup for all of our files and ideally be accesible through the internet (guarded by username and password) so we can access all of the files from anywhere on any computer if needed.

If someone could tell me what I need to get and what to do that would be brilliant!

Thanks in advance.
Joe Harrison

Your Questions About Email Marketing Reviews

George asks…

A day in the life of a marketing executive?

Jere answers:

Likely to vary a lot dependent on seniority of the job and the industry. But to give you an idea
– in early to check messages and emails
– several meetings on marketing related issues
-preparing a presentation for the board
– checking out spend vs budget
– looking at and analysing the results of the latest marketing campaign
– a staff performance review

Lizzie asks…

When Selling a home Realtors, What’s your # 1 Marketing technique?

What are the lengths you’ll go to in order to sell that house?

Jere answers:

Think of selling a home as a three legged table – marketing, pricing, and property preparation. Take away any of three, and the table falls.

So to answer your question –

1. Marketing: Yes, your home needs to be in the MLS, realtor.com, craigslist, etc. However, these are all forms of PASSIVE marketing to the public. You need to ACTIVELY market your home to other agents – with phone calls, email blasts, flyers by snail mail and by fax. And do it repetively – you want to keep your property on their radar screen – otherwise, the property could get lost in the MLS as just another property.

IMPORTANT: In a slowing market you need to get foot traffic in the door – to do this, offer incentives to the agent. The last few years there has been downward pressure on commissions as it was a strong sellers’ market, however, now that the pendulum has swung – a great way to differentiate your property from the pack is to offer the buyer’s agent a higher commission. While many homes out there are listed at 2.5 – 3% for the buyer’s agent, you can stick out by offering say 3.5%? (Disclosure: all commissions are negotiable)

Property Preparation: clean, de-clutter, clean off kitchen countertops, add a fresh coat of nuetral paint where needed. On the day of the open house – turn on all lights and open all shades – you want to maximize the light in the home. No need to bake cookies to make the home smell “warm and inviting” – that style of “marketing” is passe.

Pricing: This is the single most important factor why a home will or will not sell. DO NOT fall prey to the idea that “I’ll set the price high and reduce the price later” (say in 30 days) if no one bites.

Tempting as it is to do this, it’s counterproductive – here’s why:
1. Properties get the most amount of foot traffic in the first two weeks they are on the market.
2. Everyone has access to the comparables (recent solds) so when your overpriced home is being reviewed as a potential candidate for a showing it could get nixed from the list as it’s priced unrealistically.

Fast forward 30 days and you now decide to lower your price – the foot traffic into your home has peaked and you’ve missed the best selling opportunity.

Lastly, the longer a home sits, the greater the potential for it to be viewed as “damaged goods” even if unwarranted. Potential buyers will ask, “why is the home sitting on the market – is there something wrong with it?”

With that, good luck…

David asks…

How can I market/increase traffic to my blog?

http://lifefixes.blogspot.com/

Is the blog. reviews would be great!

Jere answers:

Hey,

The cheapest and easiest way for you to market your website is with google web search. This will help more people view your web site. So what you need is a SEO.

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the volume and quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via “natural” (“organic” or “algorithmic”) search results for targeted keywords. Usually, the earlier a site is presented in the search results or the higher it “ranks”, the more searchers will visit that site. SEO can also target different kinds of search, including image search, local search, and industry-specific vertical search engines.

As a marketing strategy for increasing a site’s relevance, SEO considers how search algorithms work and what people search for. SEO efforts may involve a site’s coding, presentation, and structure, as well as fixing problems that could prevent search engine indexing programs from fully spidering a site. Other, more noticeable efforts may include adding unique content to a site, ensuring that content is easily indexed by search engine robots, and making the site more appealing to users. Another class of techniques, known as black hat SEO or spamdexing, use methods such as link farms and keyword stuffing that tend to harm search engine user experience. Search engines look for sites that employ these techniques and may remove them from their indices.

The initialism “SEO” can also refer to “search engine optimizers”, terms adopted by an industry of consultants who carry out optimization projects on behalf of clients, and by employees who perform SEO services in-house. Search engine optimizers may offer SEO as a stand-alone service or as a part of a broader marketing campaign. Because effective SEO may require changes to the HTML source code of a site, SEO tactics may be incorporated into web site development and design. The term “search engine friendly” may be used to describe web site designs, menus, content management systems, URLs, and shopping carts that are easy to optimize.
