Jere answers:

Ash,

Starting an online venture can be a bit cumbersome. There is a lot of information to navigate through.

Your best bet is to offer a free listing as well as a paid listing. Most of the directories do this. It is a great way to gain content (which is central to the success of any directory) as well as generate revenue. You can also offer banner ad or premium placed listings as a premium service.

Here are some tips:

1. Add relevant businesses to free listings
2. Offer a paid listing that has more benefits than the free version
3. Promote the directory online

There are some articles on my blog about online marketing and starting an online business. You may find them useful:

SEO tips for a small online business?

I have had my ebay store for the past 2 years. I managed to do all I could and still feel like I am seriously lacking huge traffic unlike most of my competitors. They can get hits of 125 the first day, while I am so ar behind.

I belong to various sites
Chictopia
myspace
Blogger
twitter
facebook
even goodle ads which actually does nothing for me.

I even tried expanding keywords.

Can someone let me know what I MIGHT not be doing or doing wrong?

Here is my website

here is my comps links if anyone cares to look

Jere answers:

I posted this answer on another question. I think that it is relevant for yours as well. 🙂 You may want to consider creating a stand alone website rather than an ebay shop. You can link to your shop from the site, but it will give you the freedom to really promote your business.

You are on the right track in recognizing the need to optimize your site. Keep in mind that SEO is an ongoing process. There are lots of ways to promote your site and gain more traffic.

Here are some ideas:

1. Add your business to online directories (with a link to your website).
2. Update your site content on a monthly basis.
3. Make sure to use your “keywords” in the text of your website.
4. Make certain to mention your company name numerous times within the text of your site.
5. Create a blog or profile on a social network.

I hope these ideas help.

Daniel asks…

which university is good in business administration around CA?

im an international student at here. im want to transfer to university. my major is bus. adm. my GPA only 3.60

Jere answers:

For business degrees, the name and quality of the school you go to will make a huge difference in your future career. Employers in the US definitely recognize that some business programs are much more rigorous and stronger educations than others. Most corporate management recruiters will tell you that if you can’t get into a Top 20 MBA program, don’t waste your money going at all.

For both BA and MBA degrees, the top business schools in California are the Stanford University School of Business, Marshall School of Business at the University of Southern California, Anderson School of Management at UCLA, and Haas School of Business at U.C. Berkeley.

If you are not able to gain admission to one of these, the next best within California is probably Loyola University in Los Angeles, San Francisco State University, Pepperdine University in Malibu and San Diego State University, although none of these are nationally ranked very highly. Below that, there are probably a dozen more universities that will give you a decent bachelor’s degree to learn a trade, mostly in the California State University system, but are unlikely to ever put you on a corporate management track or help you get a job with a top professional firm. Beyond that, please don’t waste your time and money on non-accredited schools or online “universities”… No reputable employer places any value on those at all.

Betty asks…

how much do classes cost at california college san diego?

Jere answers:

I found information on the tuition at California College San Diego for the 2011-12 school year (the one that is about to end) on the web pages of the well-respected College Board:
* https://bigfuture.collegeboard.org/college-university-search/california-college-san-diego?q=California+College+San+Diego&searchType=college

The tuition charges vary by the course of study. For the 2011-12 school year they were as follows:

Associate programs:
Business Management & Accounting $40,385
Computer Programming $40,385
Computer Networking & Technology $40,385
Graphic Arts $40,385
Medical Specialties $40,385
Respiratory Therapy $47,165.

Bachelor programs: Accounting $71,180
Business Administration $71,180
Computer Science $71,180
Graphic Arts $71,180
Health Science $30,155
Healthcare Administration $71,180
Nursing $40,385
Nursing Administration $30,155
Respiratory Therapy $78,070

I looked for the information on the school’s web pages first, but it was not easily found. That is a major red flag for me. Plus, the school is a for-profit college (sometimes called a career college), which is first and foremost a business with the main focus of earning profits for its owners/shareholders. The cost of attending most for-profit/career colleges tends to be as high as or higher than many private/independent non-profit schools. That means they are very, very expensive.

Some for-profit schools are fine. Some are not.

Unsolicited advice:

The school is not accredited by the most respected and acceptable college/university accrediting commission for schools in the western part of the USA, the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. That is another major red flag for me. (Red flag #2)

Students at For-Profit Colleges Earn Less, Study Says, by Menachem Wecker
* http://www.usnews.com/education/best-colleges/articles/2012/03/23/students-at-for-profit-colleges-earn-less-study-says
Article is 2 web pages long

The school web site buries the information on student retention and graduation rates (figures that each school of higher eduction in the USA is required by the U.S. Dept. Of Education to report.) Burying the info is another major red flag. (Red flag #3) I finally found that info along with the tuition and fees (finally) on this web page:
* http://www.cc-sd.edu/student-information
The chart with the on-time completion rate (the percentage of enrolled students who actually complete their course of studies and graduate) is the last one on the web page. An on-time completion/graduation rate of 90% or higher is good. Please look at that information on the school and make your own decision. Their record is not good. (Red flag #4)

My personal opinion on the school is that anyone considering attending it should run (don’t walk) away from it immediately. Your best education and cost deal will be a local community college for an Associates degree and for a Bachelor’s degree it will be starting at a local community and then transferring to a CSU to earn a Bachelor’s degree in your chosen field of studies.
