Linda asks…

how do you start a business that networks home phone, internet and streaming video to your tv service ?

would like to open a company that does home networking specializing in media server streaming installations. you know ,so you can access the internet from your tv. since all tv is headed that way I think it would be agood start.

Jere answers:

Im unsure what your question is. “How do you start a business…” or do you want to know what products would do the job for a business you described?

Personally, I would use Microsoft Home Server as a backend media/storage server and use Vista Ultimate / Windows 7 Ultimate as a Media center connected to the TV. You can get quite powerful Media center PC’s with HDMI out, powered by Intels Atom processor that can handle BluRay playback too.

MyMovies is a great app to install on Home Server to copy all your DVD’s to stream over the network. And you MUST get AnyDVD HD from Slysoft – its an awesome product. Works well with Cyberlink PowerDVD 9 for playing back BluRay/HD DVD’s and normal DVD.

Does this help?

Home business question; How do you set up a phone/internet pay service?

My mom just started her own business. She’s a psychic offering various spiritual readings/services.

She wants to know how she can set up some kind of way for her clients to pay her over the phone and internet using their debit/credit cards.

What is this kind of service called? Where can I find it? How do I set it up?

Thanks for your help!!
Shes not looking for a 1800 number. She’s using her own line. She just wants to know how she can recieve credit/debit transactions from her customers with little to no fee whether it be over the phone, in person or online.

Jere answers:

Tried this myself about 2 years ago. Just walked in my local bank and they referred me to a division that just handles business transitions. One call to an 800 number and they gave me a list of equipment I should by (card reader/input pad) and applications to process VISA, MC and AmEx. Most any bank has this service. There is a fee charged (to you) for each transaction, and they need a place to deposit the money, so I helps to have a bank account already at the bank you choose for your business. Took about a week and I bought the card reader for $10 from eBay. Done.

I do. I have phone, Road Runner Internet, and cable, all for one price of $140 a month from Time Warner Cable of Maine. I love it and save lots of money on my phone bill which is $39.95 a month, and I can call anywhere in the US and Canada 24/7 for NO extra charge. Love it!! Excellent service as well!!
