Joseph asks…

Want to have my first online home business, please help (see inside for business plan description)?

Hello.

I have built a couple of connections in China and the person I know owns a factory in suburban Beijing. The factory manufactures backpacks, hand bags, and other accessories. I live in the U.S. and want to start my own home business online.

My understanding is that it is a major advantage to be able to offer customized products specified by my client, namely, customer provides the design so that the factory can manufacture accordingly. They, of course, make pre-designed products as well. My role is basically a business agent or representative in the U.S. and make money by selling those products. Another major advantage of this business idea lies in my direct connection with the manufacturer therefore I can get factory price without middleman (well I am the middleman).

Now my question is: how do I put this idea online? In other words, is there an Internet website that allows me to build online stores and sell my products? eBay and Amazon pop into my head in the first place but most of these online sellers are B2C. Although I do not mind at all to start it this way but my objective is to do business with suppliers or manufacturers in the U.S. (or other countries). I did a little research on alibaba.com, a Chinese B2B website and would like to know if there is such a web service in the U.S.?

I might not have the time to build my own website, not to mention maintaining it as I have a full time job that I do not want to forfeit. But if you by chance know a way to do it with ease and you think it is a must to have my own website, please share your justifications. Thank you.

At last, I am trying to open a home based business online instead of a “company”.

Thank you for reading my situation and offering your opinion.

Jere answers:

I am as well starting my own online business drop-shipping products. I used webstarts.com to build my webpage and use paypal as my shopping cart. The website is very easy to use. They have pre-designed templates to use and plenty of videos on how to build your website. They make it very easy…it is a bit time consuming, but you get to have your website look the way YOU want it to look. You can make it look professional. If you would like to take a look at what I have created (and I have never opened up my own webpage before, first time for me) then email me and I will send you the link. I don’t think I can post it here without my answer getting deleted. Kminich03@yahoo.com

Good luck!

Online Clothing Store? New Business?

I am extremely passionate about starting an online vintage store that sells clothes and one of a kind items. I would like to ask a few questions so I can get a good grasp on a few things before I write my business plan.

* QUESTIONS *

1. If I were to open a business online, selling clothes, how would I have someone make my clothes for me? Do other companies have relationships with China/Japan? How does this work. An Example would be good.

2. Good marketing/promoting ideas?

3. Labelling your clothes.

4. Is it illegal to use previously owned clothing items and re-branding them to your logo?

Any other tips and advice (positive outlook only please, or negative with good intentions)

I am extremely passionate & driven, I just thought I could use a little extra help, who couldn’t, right?

Thank you.

Jere answers:

1) You need to find someone local first to make up a few of your designs before sending them overseas for reproduction, which is not only VERY expensive to do, as you have to do mass quantities. Not to mention, overseas companies are notorious for ripping off your design.

2) Get a catchy logo and take good photos of your clothes. Easy to read and easy to navigate websites are the best. Once you have a clothing line together, start contacting local media to let them know you are launching your new company and designs.

3) You need to have labels made with the washing instructions, fiber content, and your logo. This is something you do last. Do an internet search under ‘custom clothing labels’ and you will find several companies.

4) Yes. Extremely illegal. Imagine how you would feel if someone put their label into your designs. If you do it, you will get sued and your name will be MUD in the industry.

Ken asks…

Id like to study online in china, anyone know how?

I have recently moved here from overseas (Australia) and I am wanting to study online from home. Most universities or courses ive looked at are based in America and do not connect with China. Does anyone know how I can do this? Id like to study something in business for when myself and partner leave china.

Jere answers:

Why not try studying via open learning Australia – https://www.open.edu.au. They have a large choice of Australia universities and courses.

The degree you earn in the end actual comes from the university, from what i remember you should be able to sit exams in China.

Charles asks…

is it illegal to start this type of online business?

if i was to make a web site and sell replyca shoes and clothes from china would that be illegal? i can get jordans for about 50 bucks. lets say i make a web site and sell them for 80 would that be illegal? how would i go about doing this? also what does it take to start up an online business>? what licenses are needed? who or were should i go to get these type of legal questiones awnsered?

Jere answers:

Unless the replicas are licensed, yes it is illegal and you will quickly get a letter from the manufacturer(s) asking you to cease and desist or face law suit for a trademark/licensing violation.

At $50, I would bet that the products are not licensed.
