James asks…

what is Personal Selling and Direct Marketing?

i have to find Personal Selling and Direct Marketing of Pedigree company.
but i still have no idea what the definition is.. >.<
thank you!

Jere answers:

Personal selling entails a straightforward sales-based interaction between two or more parties. One of these parties is usually trying to demonstrate the value and benefit of the goods or service they are trying to sell. You see personal selling all the time when you’re walking into a car dealership and the associate comes to greet you and asks how he/she can help you. That’s one the first (and crucial) steps in the personal selling process.

Direct marketing is a bit different; it doesn’t necessarily involve any sales conversations or interactions. Direct marketing can be anything that allows a marketing message to be communicated directly to the customer or potential customer. It can be an ad in the mail that’s sent to your home with products or images that are relevant to you. It can be an email in your inbox, an automated telephone message, or even a Facebook message.

You could say that personal selling tactics and direct marketing tactics sometimes overlap, but they’re different in that one is simply a sales situation and the other is a marketing/communications based situation.

Donna asks…

Creative ideas for direct marketing through the mail?

I need some creative direct marketing ideas for my kids birthday party business. Thanks!

Jere answers:

Try to blog about your topic and build a list of contacts. You can create a short report about your topic and give it away in exchange for contact details. It’s actually a simple thing to do, but not easy.

Michael asks…

What is the meaning of “Direct marketing”?

I heard from some friends that direct marketing is often in China and Korea?
What is direct marketing? How is work?
Do you know the directmarketing companies in China and Korea?

Jere answers:

I would expand upon the second person’s definition of Direct Marketing by adding that Direct Marketing differs from traditional marketing or advertising in that it attempts to connect with customers on an individual basis, rather than with a universal message.

Highly targeted direct mail will reach you with a message or an offer that is completely different than what your next door neighbor might receive. Much of today’s Direct Marketing is highly targeted based upon a person’s customer profile. This includes personal information as to a person’s age, gender, income, level of education, marriage status, buying habits, media habits and other lifestyle characteristics.

In the days before Direct Marketing became as sophisticated as it is today, marketers were content with sending the same message to a mass audience with the hope that it might reach enough customers to justify its expense. This was sometimes referred to as “the shotgun approach.” As Direct Marketing became more and more sophisticated however, and customer databases became more robust, marketers have been able to create more highly targeted campaigns – which are often referred to as using “a sniper’s rifle.”

I hope this helps you understand the difference between Direct Marketing and Mass Marketing.
