Your Questions About Business Online Services

Charles asks…

I have$25,000 and I want to start a business?

What kind of business should I start with seed capital of $25,000.
My friends told me an online business would be great. Do anyone have any suggestions? My friends said providing a service business online is the best……meaning something like some kind of reservation, or cost comparison business they seem to be hot.
Any input concerning online or off line business is welcome ..thank you!

Jere answers:

Anyone who says “Online business has Bad ROI is point blank stoopid”.

Anyways your friend is right. Service business online is one of the best ways. The best about this business is you can take it offline if you started out online or vice versa.

25000 for online business is too much.. I advice you to invest wisely if you are starting online(like on monthly basis and check your results and profit).

Most online business has low cost start ups. Just don’t be fooled by website designing companies that’ll guarantee top placements in google, yahoo for your site. They’ll suck up your 25 grands in no time.

This is the start up cost for online business
domain name : $10 a year
Hosting : $5-10 a month ($60-$120) a year
Website design : You can get a decent design for $100 at elance.com

thats 230$ for first year. Now all you need to do is to spend some of your money wisely on advertisements. I suggest $5-10 a day. If you make profit from spending $5-10 a day.

Start investing more in advertising as long as your profits margins are good & increasing.

Here’s Best Idea: If you are starting an offline business… Invest $230 more in building a website for that offline business and promote your business online and offline both.

Setting up various online businesses in the UK?

I currently have a full-time job and am also registered as self-employed which allows me to sell online services (web design & hosting) in my spare time.

I’m looking into pursuing several other online ventures in different areas but have no idea how this should be achieved.

Would it be possible to setup a single limited company, and then trade under various different names for my different businesses?

Jere answers:

Think about what’s easiest for your prospective customers. Will they understand that the company that they buy their web design from also sells self-help books, say?

We tried running our training and consultancy business under the umbrella of our limited company that provided professional photography and art. It’s hard to divide your webiste up into the different cost centres so that people arrive at the bit they’re supposed to. And they’ll always have a look round the rest of the site. In the end, we split them into two separate businesses.

If there’s a logical link between the products and services you offer, it will work. You need to register the different SIC codes at Companies House that show what your limited company trades in.

As has been said elsewhere, a good accountant will explain to you the tax advantages and disadvantages of keeping everything in one company. They’ll explain about related companies, too, where, if there are obvious links between the companies, you may only be eligible for one set of tax reliefs.

Setting up a limited company needn’t cost you more than £50 if you do it yourself. It’s not hard to do. You’ll have to do an annual return for each one, which costs £15 on-line, and present annual accounts to Companies House for each company. That has implications for accountancy fees but a reasonable accountant will do you a deal for doing accounts for however many companies you have. It’s all business that they don’t have to go looking for.

As you have a full time job, work out what time you have available to run each of your businesses before launching them. If you’re able to outsource some of the work you’ll be able to do more.

Good luck!

Robert asks…

What should be the ratio of income to mortgage loan amount to make sure I am approved?

I am looking at buying a property for 180,000. This is my first home and I can put down only 5-10%. My salary is 55,000 per year and I have a small business online that generates 20,000 per year. The property is a 5 unit apartment complex with all units currently rented and producing 2380 in monthly income currently. The total costs involved in the property if I were to own it would be 2000 per month. Should I get approved for the loan?

I have good credit but I am not sure what the rule of thumb is for a mortgage loan amount and its ratio to my income. Anybody with home buying experience that can give me some insight?

Jere answers:

Typically lenders want to see your mortgage payment no more than 28% of gross income and total debt service of less than 35% of gross income. Generally a lender will look at a 5-unit building as an investment, not a home, even if you are living there. This will tend to tighten the lending criteria and raise the interest rates a bit.

Self-employment income generally isn’t considered until you can prove 2 or more years of regular income from the business.

What software can I use to run a very small travel agency?

I like to sell air tickets and hotel reservations. I use online services like travelocity, airlines webpages and call centers. This tools dont offer me the flexibility to perform changes to reservations or extend the due date of the reservation. So i need an online software that gives me the flexibility to manage this reservations. I have heard of Sabre and Amadeus, but i think they are too expensive for me right now. Any advice?

Jere answers:

Go to microsoft.com and review their small business software. It is directly compatible with MSoffice, and has a trial version for download.
