Carol asks…
Starting a business with no debt, no assets, no money and no credit score?
I want to open a clothing store that specializes in certain sportswear but I need financing. Most likely through a small business loan since I hear it’s impossible to get a govt. grant. I’m 22 years old, I’ve never had a credit card so I suppose I don’t have a credit score. I’m not in debt or have any student loans or anything. I don’t own anything either (a place, car, jewelry, etc.). My current part-time job doesn’t pay well enough to be able to save a good amount of money.
So is it impossible for me to get a small business loan to start-up a business? I estimate that I need about 15 to 20k to cover the cost of products, supplies, payroll for me and 2 other employees, insurance/security and rent for a few months.
If not, I may have to consider making the business an online store instead of a brick-and-mortar store. But I would really prefer for it to be a brick-and-mortar store because I think my store’s specialization would be more effective than it would be online.

Jere answers:
I suggest go online first if you have no capital whatsoever. Can you imagine the headache you will have at the end of the month when the lease payment is already due and you’ve got nothing to pay? Or your employees?
Without money, start small and grow slowly
You can get a business loan only if you have collateral, assets, investment in your own business, and strong management experience in running the business. Without these, your chances of getting a loan is nil.
So with grants. Unless your business falls under the technology transfer or research types of businesses, no grants for you.

Yes, I would only suggest one program for it’s ease of use, and flexibility. The best overall program out there is Quickbooks.

John asks…
Canadians: Question about federal and Quebec tax return. No T4 or RL-1 due to closed-down business.?
I have a bit of a conundrum. My employer for 2009 has gone completely AWOL – i.e. they no longer exist, and their phone numbers have all been disconnected. Vanished clean. I am trying to find a way to submit my federal AND provincial (Quebec) tax returns, despite the fact that my T4 and RL-1 slips have not been – and will not be – submitted. It seems the payroll person has gone AWOL as well.
To add to this, I committed the huge blunder of getting rid of my pay stubs, which would have provided me with some crucial income tax information. The only thing I have to go on is my ROE, which only shows my gross earnings.
CRA have informed me that I can submit what little information I have, and also suggested that I could use their Online Payroll Deductions Calculator (https://apps.cra-arc.gc.ca/ebci/rhpd…o?lang=English) to estimate my income tax deductions.
Revenue Quebec, on the other hand, have completely stonewalled me, saying there is nothing they can do unless I have my RL-1 or final pay stub.
All this to say: I know I made a huge mistake by discarding my pay stubs, but is there any other solution for this mess?
Any help would be hugely appreciated. Thanks.

Jere answers:
Revenue Quebec doesn’t have an Online calculator… But they do have on that you can download… It’s called WinRAS (WINdows Retenue À la Source). Maybe they (RevQC) will accept a rough estimate in the same way with a written letter explaining the situation.

Donna asks…
I need to track my time for my own use. What timesheet program do you recommend?
I only need to track my time for own benefit, so I can look at where I spend my time, and how to better spend it. Its for my own use, not for payroll or contractors. I own a small business and I want to improve my productivity.
I prefer to use Quickbooks Pro for this since I already have that program. Can you post instructions on how to access the Timesheet option in Quickbooks Pro?
Or I’d like an online timesheet: a fast, easy timesheet website that integrates into all my other productivity tools, including gmail, highrise, and plaxo. What do you recommend? Thanks!

Jere answers:
I would create an Excel spreadsheet to use, but I would use Excel for everything if I could get away with it! 🙂
