Your Questions About Doing Business Online Government

Steven asks…
If you volunteer doing business tasks for a non profit virtually is that the same as?
if you volunteer doing business tasks for a non profit locally? Or will there be a bias involved in what future employers think?

Jere answers:
What future employers want to see regarding volunteering is that:
— it supported a nonprofit organization, charity, school or other community-serving organization that does not discriminate and that is fully, legally registered with the appropriate government agencies
— it provided you with training and experience that they would like to have in an employee
— it demonstrates the kind of worker you would be (dependable, results-oriented, a leader, someone who knows how to cooperate, etc.)
If your online volunteering activities meet that criteria, then employers will be interested. In fact, they may even be MORE interested, since it shows you know how to use online tools, how to be managed and supported remotely, how to communicate via the written word, etc.

Betty asks…
Do I have to charge sales tax if I design web site banners?
One does not charge tax on services, especially if they’re doing business within their own state, right?

Jere answers:
As far as US is concerned, there is no service charge on services . There is only sales tax on products shipped. So lets say if you design and deliver those banners via email or any other online medium, you should be fine. On the other hand if you put in on a disk and then ship the disk, law considers that as a product and its taxed. However you are eligible to collect tax only if you are licensed to collect the tax on behalf of the government and you should only collect tax from the citizens of those states only where you business is licensed. Hope this helps.

(UK people answer please) I had my heart set on a sociology degree, but it is a very underestimated degree so is it better I go for business studies? Everyone is doing business studies, hardly anyone picks sociology. Is it that bad that I’d end up in no job at the end of it? Lisa asks…
Why do I have to register my business?
I’ve searched everywhere online and can’t get a straight answer. Why does a business have to be registered with the government? If I’m not planning on opening any business-related accounts do I still need to register? Is it so that the governement can get more taxes? Is it so that the government can make sure your employees are threated fairly? Or is there any reason registering as a business is actually benefitial for the company? I’m planning on starting a business but am not familiar with all of the legal aspects, it seems very complicated, and I’d rather not register unless it’s absolutely necessary. Can someone help?
Also, located in Ontario, Canada

Jere answers:
You need business licenses, health licenses and your business must be conducted out of a building zoned commercial. You will also have to have workers comp insurance and liability insurance, pay employment taxes to the state/province as well the government. You can not hide from big brother !!!

Laura asks…
is it illegal to buy stuffs online with cheap price and resell it for profit?
Hello every one,
I love to do business, and I always try to find an opportunity to make money from selling. Finally, I got some idea. I bought PIN for prepaid phone online and I resell it for my customers, who live around me. I wonder is that illegal for me to do that? I know buying and selling is not illegal, but the illegal here is something about government. Will they allow you to make profit like that without business license, tax? for example I make a profit of $5/customer . if I have 100 customers, I already have $500. I use my credit card to buy stuffs on ebay, amazon and resell it for cash. please give me some advice

Jere answers:
No, not legal. You are involved in a business of buying
and selling to make a profit. You need a license and
pay tax on any gains. You can do this on the side if no
one reports you. My lawn mower guy does this.
