There are basically NINE ways that you can get a visa to live and work in the US:

(1) Marriage (or engagement in anticipation of marriage) to a US citizen.

(2) You have skills that are in short supply in the US e.g. Scientific or medical training. A degree is normally a must. Or you have superior specialist skills with at least 12 years experience. (H visas)

(3) You have an Employer who is willing to transfer you – but even the employer has to make a good case for you – so you have to be a manager unless you fall under category (2) above.(L visas)

(4) You may get a Green card in the diversity lottery (UK citizens, except N.Ireland, are not generally eligible unless you, your spouse or parents were born abroad or held a different citizenship.

(5)You own or buy business (does not get you permanent resident status i.e. No green card)You must be a national of a qualifying Treaty countries. The business must have a minimum value of around $150k (more the better) bearing in mind you will need somewhere to live and with any startup business you will need at least 2 years living money as back up. So a figure of $350k would be a nearer minimum (E-2 visas)

(6)You are an “investor” i.e. You have at least US $1m in assets to bring with you. Half of that in a few areas. And your background will be investigated to the hilt. (EB-5 visas)

(7)You have a close relative (mother, father, brother, sister and no further) who is an US citizen who would sponsor you, approx time this take 2-12 years?

Recruitment agent will not take you seriously if you are not already in the US. But if you are getting a visa under (2) above then you need a job offer before you can get the visa. Your Employer will be your sponsor this will cost them upward of $5k. IF our members of congress won’t listen to the outcry at the Town-halls and insist on bring the Nationalizing/ Federal Option Healthcare bill to the floor for a vote then we the people need to send a message that they will hear – silence. The GREAT AMERICAN SICKOUT, when they don’t hear the people at work, the construction site sounds, the taxi on the road, the stores and restaurants empty and/or closed. The silence of economic activity as we the people send the message to congress that they work for us. If they won’t get that then we won’t work at all. This is about the private sector and not Government. If you work for government, vital services and emergency services DO NOT call in sick, but participate by not buying anything that whole day. Bring your lunch from home. The first business day before the full floor vote in either the house or senate which ever comes first will be the day we send our message of silence in the GREAT AMERICAN SICKOUT. You can participate by doing the following things:

1) If you own a business don’t open your doors for business
2) If your boss didn’t close call in sick to your private sector job
3) DO NOT BUY ANYTHING AT ALL THAT DAY
a) Shop the day before or after
b) gas up your car the day before or after
c) don’t buy anything online either
d) don’t sell anything
Lastly – Stay Home or go to a free park have a barbecue or do any other activity that is FREE and involves not buying anything.

Congress is dismissing us as manufactured mobs and paid protesters. The White House is asking your fellow citizens to send your email to the whitehouse.gov email if they think your email is “fishy” which must be code for opposed to their healthcare agenda. The GREAT AMERICAN SICK OUT will once again be the first business day BEFORE the house or senate which ever is first sends the healthcare bill out for a full floor vote. If they pass it anyways regardless of the sickout then when the next house of congress Senate or Representatives sends it version of the bill out for a full floor vote we will have a second GREAT AMERICAN SICKOUT day the first business day before it goes to a full floor vote. IF again the congress won’t listen to us then we will continue the sick out till they do. Even when passed by both houses of congress they must go to a committee to reconcile the two bills into one saying the same exact things and it returns for up or down votes in both House and Senate. The legal age for you to start a business is 18. The law doesn’t permit anyone any younger. Having said that, you could do all your planning and research beforehand, I think; better ask someone with legal experience to help you with this and do not take my word without consultation. This is irrespective if it’s online or offline.

In the meantime, the government has set up a programme for people to experiment running a mock business for fun. It’s called Young Enterprise; something you can ask your school to look into. For me, it didn’t really helped me with employment as such, but it was fun and it was something to do whilst it lasted.

Start up costs can be an issue with many people. There are ways of funding your enterprise, but you may want to speak to successful people who have done the sort of business you want to do and look to people who can offer professional and specialised advice on the subject matter.

You can say online business is probably one of the cheapest avenues to do business, with low start up costs, but you have to look whether it’s suitable for your business as oppose to just trusting anybody’s advice, even mine.

Becoming a billionaire is not easy. If you look at the many billionaires out there, they have spent a lot of time and dedication to get where they are now. Becoming a millionaire is much more achievable, but hitting the next milestone will be a challenge.

In any case, the first thing if I was to start a business is to examine the market I want to go into first. If it’s viable, I would look for an accountant to help register and seek financial advice. I would also have a team of legal advisers, people who can help fund your business, mentors, access to consultants, access to a customer base, be able to find the right people to hire, find the right premises, find the right suppliers, etc. There is a lot of relationship building and you need to know your stuff inside and out. You will also need to be wary of everything in your business and outside your business. Of course, this is a rough outline, as there should be more to it, but it can serve as a starting point.

If you plan to incorporate then yes you need to register with the federal,state and city government. If you plan to run the business as a sole proprietor then all you need is a business license from your local city government.

Steps for getting started:
1. Forming the business either through incorporating or as a sole proprietor. If you plan to incorporate then you need to get with your states Secretary of State to do this.
2. Find your SIC and NAICS code you will need either one or both for your business formation with the government entities.
3. Getting an EIN if required
4. Setting up a Franchise and Excise Tax and Sales and Use Tax account with the Dept of Revenue in the state you are in. You need to determine if you need one or both of these accounts. Just call the Dept of Revenue in your state and they are usually pretty helpful in answering all your questions.
5. Set up a business bank account or bank account with a DBA attached to it.
6. Set up a merchant and or pay pal account.
7. Build a website and get a domain name and hosting.
8. Get inventory.
9. Figure out how you plan to ship product. This all comes down to how you plan to handle inventory. Some people have their own and some get involved with companies that have the product and you sell it and they drop ship the product for you. This saves on you having to carry the product yourself and having unsold inventory in your possession.
10. Marketing your website. Just because you publish a website doesn’t mean it’s visible to the search engines and the public at large so you need to submit the site to the 3 top search engines at the least and start marketing the site.

This is a basic order and some of these may overlap each other during the process but I hope this helps out. I’ve been through the routine and had to figure it all out myself. Just ask a lot of questions with the people you are dealing with to get things in order.
