There are 3 components to direct mail marketing: 1) the Creative 2) the Offer and 3) the LIST.
Everyone spends a lot of time writing the creative and editing the letter. You’ll put hours into the brochure, changing photos, revising each word. In general, you’ll spend just a small portion of time working on the offer (think coupon or promotion). True direct marketing professionals test everything. They’ll switch headlines around and experiment to see which gets the best results. But that’s after they know what results they normally get. Your best bet is to spend more time refining the mailing list.
