Backup of computer hard drive: how do you do it via FTP?

While trying to get files from one laptop onto another, I am now having trouble with the OTHER laptop (mini-crashes)….which brings to mind how much, both for personal and business reasons, I want to be able to DAILY backup my hard drive. I spent a lot of money for external hard drive, but copying it takes forever!!! And I question if a RAID drive is the way to go, because I THINK both drives could simultaneously crash or get virus-infected. Somewhere here online someone mentioned backing up via FTP….how does this work? how complicated? how expensive? how time-consuming?
PS Can’t fit all my docs/photos onto a CD and don’t have DVD burner; not sure if all would fit anyway!
Thanks for input!

Jere answers:

You might take a look at http://www.handybackup.net/ftp-backup.shtml – It seems tailor-made for what you’re doing.

On the other hand, ftp backup requires that you put your information across the Internet, into someone else’s hands. The external hard drive option is probably the best one (I do this) – I’d *suspect* that the reason that it takes forever is that you’re using a USB1.0 external drive, or plugging the drive onto a USB1.0 port. If that’s the case, upgrading to USB2.0 would be very cheap and speed up your data transfers.

University of Phoenix – Axia College (online) Is it challenging?

Hello to all. I have decided to take online course at the University of Phoenix to obtain an Associates in Business. Although I worked on and off in the Administrative field for 10 years, I still wanted to earn a degree as a backup. I have been taking online classes since January and I’ve been making straight A’s. Ok…I know ME….and I was never a straight A student, in highschool or on my past college campus. So my question is, do you find this college to be challenging? Do you think they’re throwing good grades just because they want money? Any feedback would help! Thanks in advance!

Jere answers:

No, it’s not challenging at all. Most people that go there either don’t have the grades for a good school or they don’t have the time to attend a real university. So most other people don’t really study that much either.

There’s a reason the school has a 1-800 number and advertises to you. It’s more of a product they are selling to you than an education. Often times they add classes over time, so people take even longer for their degrees and may never get it. Their graduation rate is pretty low from what I’ve heard.

As a matter of fact, I don’t think any of these schools with 1-800 numbers are really good schools. I mean you don’t even have to pay for the phone call to call them. So you figure it out. I wouldn’t really recommend going there, but they make a lot of money because many people are short on time these days. Not sure how employers will value their degrees.

How can I copy my hard drive to a new computer and not have to re-load my software?

I have a small business and my laptop is getting old. The POS software that I use for all of my accounting and database management doesn’t exist anymore. The company went out of business so there is no hope of getting another copy of my software. I back up the data everyday, but the data is useless without the software. How can I transfer the program to another computer hard drive and still have it work? I have tried this several times using the backup function of the program, but when I try to open the program on the new computer there are files missing so it wont run.
If there is a way to copy my HD so that my program will work on another computer PLEASE help me!
I do not have any disks to re-load the program because it was an online downloadable program so there never were any disks.

Jere answers:

Unfortunately with Windows there are only 3 ways you can do what you want…

1) Install the software on your new PC. Can’t do that because you have no install medium.

2) Duplicate the whole hard drive onto a new disk (using any partition manager software) which will duplicate the OS, the video drivers, the sound card etc etc etc. So you’d end up with a cloned disk drive… And you’d have to upgrade that disk to suit your new PC and new OS. It’s a slog and a pain and doesn’t get you a nice clean OS with nice clean applications. It also ties you to using an OS that the application will work under… So if it was a Win95 app you may find it won’t work with XP or Vista or the next app on. Or it may not work on the next file system layout.

3) Work out exactly what files are needed and what registry entries are needed and copy them over to the new PC.

Alternatively, can you export your data, reformat it to suit a currently available package and switch packages?

Or pay a developer to write a program to get the data out and into a new application.

Or maybe you can find someone out there with an install set for the product… Someone may have kept the installer download rather than just using it to install from and then deleting it.

Which online backup for 350 gig of data?

I need an online backup system. Have 350 gig to back up of personal music recordings. Suggestions welcome. Have read some reviews of popular sites. Not impressed.

Jere answers:

Most popular are carbonite and sugarsync. Carbonite is doing mad ads on podcast and radio so i think they are expanding fast.

Anyway for your amount of data you will need business plan and it will cost you like $250. I am using Mozy myself because it is cheap
