Your Questions About Business Online Degree Programs

Sandra asks…

Online Classical/Ancient Studies degree program?

I can’t seem to find a school offering an online bachelors degree program in Classical/Ancient Studies. Does anyone know of one?

Jere answers:

Most online programs focus on business (accounting, marketing, human resources), health (nursing, psychology), or some other more popular discipline. The closest thing to what you’re describing would be a BA in Humanities. Not too many online programs cover BA disciplines.

I did find a couple of online universities that offer BA Humanities programs:
http://www.universities.com/Distance_Learning/University_of_Maryland_University_College_Bachelor_of_Arts_Humanities.html
http://www.universities.com/Distance_Learning/Ellis_University_Online.html

Your best bet is to contact a few universities that have the specific program you are interested in and see if they offer online courses.

Good luck.

Online Business School?

Does anyone know of a good online business school? The price range? How long it tkes to get bachelors degree?
Any other information I should know?

Jere answers:

There’s a growing number of reputable business schools offering bachelor’s and master’s degrees online. The best source for this information is the AACSB International website. Choose Knowledge Services from their top menu, and then Business School Profiles from the left. This will take you to a search form. You’ll be searching for Degree in Discipline via Vehicle from the Degrees/Programs menu. (I’d also recommend choosing Accreditation from the Basic Characteristics menu to make sure you’re seeing the very best schools.) The list it returns will give you school names and tuition, and will link to more comprehensive profiles of the institutions, which include the programs’ websites.

Another good source, especially if you’re looking for a bargain, is GetEducated.com. They rank the “best buy” programs, which only include reputable programs–no degree mills.

The average full-time student will finish a BBA in four or five years. However, if you’ll be working full-time while you’re studying, you might not want to be enrolled full-time–at least not every semester. For BBA students working full time, 9 hours (3 classes) per semester is a pretty good load. At that rate, the degree could still be finished in 5 years provided you’re taking summer classes as well.

Jenny asks…

Why choose a online degree program?

I am thinking about earning a masters degree online and wanted to get the pros and cons of getting a degree online.

Jere answers:

It depends on what you are getting the degree in and what work you want to do when you graduate. Many MBA and some IT degrees are available online and they are gaining acceptance. There are some psych degrees online, but personally, having taken a couple of online courses, I don’t think you can get the well-rounded experience you really need in that field. There are some degrees where experience under a mentor that you meet with regularly is absolutely priceless.

That said, if the only way you can get a graduate degree is online it can be done. Be VERY CAREFUL to select a school that is accredited by one of the Regional Accrediting organizations if you’re getting a US degree. There are some universities that say they are accredited, but their accreditations mean something different- basically they mean nothing to people in business or academia. You won’t be able to get into a PhD program with one of those degrees (Unless it is also accredited in some weird way) and many places won’t consider it a real degree.

Most of all watch out for the fake colleges that basically offer a piece of paper saying you have a degree for a fee.

Mary asks…

Online Business Degree?

I want to do an online business degree. Does anyone have suggestions.

Jere answers:

Try to look for schools that offer on line programs but have a traditional brick and motor school as well.

Drexel University www.drexel.com
University of Maryland www.umuc.edu
University of Baltimore www.ubalt.edu
Columbia Union College www.cuc.edu

All of these are examples of reputable traditional colleges and Universities that also offer complete on line degrees in business administration.

Try to stay away from “for profit” on line universities such as University of Phoenix and ITT Tech. They won’t carry the same reputation as the schools mentioned above.
