Your Questions About Business Online Degree Programs

Mary asks…
Is there such a thing as an online Master of Science degree program in Business Statistics?
I want a master’s program in applying statistics in business situations, but not a master’s program in statistics. I’d also prefer to not get an MBA, unless the MBA program has an aggressive focus on business stats and marketing research and quantitative analysis. Any good ideas?
I also won’t go to the University of Phoenix or other exclusively online place, I’m searching for a more reputable program.

Jere answers:
There probably is an on-line degree like that. Here is your first business statistics question:
What is the probablility that you will get a good job if you get a graduate degree on-line?
(hint — not very good).
My advice — get an MS in Operations Research from a real college — or get an MBA from a good school where you take all your electives in Operations Research and Decision Sciences.

Sandy asks…
online degree programs for history, humanities or philosophy?
Every online degree program I’ve seen is for business or nursing or tech-related degrees. Anyone heard of one from an accredited college for the above studies?

Jere answers:
Depends at what level you want to do it. I think something called American Public University has programs in History. Norwich University has an online masters degree in Military History. And the University of Illinois Online (it is the same UI as Urbana-Champaign and your degree won’t say online) has a philosophy undergraduate major.

Steven asks…
Can I earn a master’s degree in business management entirely online?
I’m interested in the University of Phoenix online programs but I’m not sure if you can earn a master’s degree 100% online or if I would have to take actual campus classes first then transfer to finish getting the degree.

Jere answers:
I caution you – employers do not look on the U of P MBA and smile. Do you have any other realistic options?
An MBA, even more than most other degrees, is usually one that people get in order to advance their careers. Consider your options carefully. If at all possible, try to attend a program that is accredited by the AACSB. That’s a type of professional accreditation that is a mark of high quality.
If it is impossible for you to go to another school – even another online school that’s hooked to a more reputable “brick and mortar” university – in other words, if U Phoenix is your only practical choice, then consider them. But don’t expect an MBA from there to jump-start your career like a degree from a uni with a better rep would. In fact, to be brutally honest, my past employers would get U of P MBA resumes and toss them. They would not be considered. Thus, I warn you. If you have the opportunity to attend a university with a better rep, then do so.
Good schools that I know for sure that offer distance MBAs include:
Duke University
Drexel
Carnegie Mellon
Penn State
Ball State
U Nebraska – Lincoln
Thunderbird (really intriguing program)
Babson
Worcester Polytechnic Institute
Rensellaer Polytechnic Institute
UMass Amherst
U Maryland
A highly respected business school – one of the top in the US – which does offer distance MBAs is Duke University.
Thunderbird’s program is also fairly highly ranked, has a good rep, and is intriguing.

Sharon asks…
Question about getting a degree in business…..Please answer?
I plan on going to college online sometime in the beginning of 2009 to get my Associate degree in business. I found at least 12 colleges that offer online degree programs in business and these colleges are accredited.
My first question is are there any good jobs available for someone with an associate degree or would it be a good idea to go back to school after I get my associate degree and get a bachelors degree?
Someone told me once that a lot of employers don’t take people seriously if they get a degree through an online program. My husband is a Vocational Rehab counselor and he told me it doesn’t matter as long as the school is accredited. Is that true?

Jere answers:
Technically, they shouldn’t care. However, all humans have prejudices.
Many people feel that an online college is not a rigorous as a real university. (I agree based on my brother’s ease with getting an online degree. He’s not a genius and barely did any work to get his degree!)
Likewise, an associate’s degree is not a good option. Hundreds of thousands of people, possibly millions, have business degrees. Many of them have bachelor’s or MBAs. Your associates degree will not get you far in the business world.

Chris asks…
business degree online?
I want a BA in business admin. what is a prestigious online program?

Jere answers:
There are no prestigious online programs.
Most online universities are For Profit corporations with no admissions standards. They cost more than respectable public universities. Employers do not respect them — so their graduates make thousands less per year when they graduate — if they can find a job.
You would be better off getting a tattoo on your forehead that says “I have a bad educatoin.” It ousl have the same effect and be a lot cheaper.
