Your Questions About Business Online Degree Programs

Sharon asks…
which online program is the most respectable?
Hello! I am wanting to get a business degree, which online programs would be the most respected? I understand ideally a regular brick and mortar school would be best however I had to accept a job offer today which requires me to be available to work anytime between 6am-midnight 7 days a week, and I’m sure most people know in this economy you can’t be picky about jobs. our local colleges don’t offer complete degrees online…so if you have personal experience about an online program that is not laughed at among executives please let me know!

Daniel asks…
Is an online degree from an established, accredited four year university a good idea?
I m considering enrolling to Washington State University’s online bachelors degree in business administration program. I currently run my own small business plus hold down a part time job so I do not have the time to attend the university in person. Would an online degree from this state university be the same as a if i had attended in person?

Jere answers:
Definitely. I live north of Spokane, and am working on my MBA from Indiana University, and a dual Master’s in Global Management from Thunderbird.
I hate WSU (I went to UW undergrad), but as long as they are AACSB accedited, it is worthwhile. However, you should check the rankings and try and get into the best school you can. IU is top tier (top 20 across the board, top 5 / top 10 in many disciplines), and Thunderbird is #1 in global business 10 years’ running.
The key is AACSB certification. It ensures the school has the highest standards for academics, and that the online degree is just as good as the in-residence degree is.
WSU has that certification, so it is at least top 10% of business schools in the world. There are better, so find a fit for what you want to study, your budget, and your application.
I looked at every school on that list, compared it to all the rankings, and then went down the list until one had an online program. Duke was the best Executive Ed, but it was $120,000+ and required me to be on campus several weeks a year. Neither fit me. IU requires one week a year; The IU/TBird dual is about three and a half weeks. One at IU, one in Beijing, China, and one and a half in Arizona.
Online degrees are no different than the in-residence degrees at AACSB schools. In fact, they have some advantages because you keep your job, you learn to manage your time alot more, and you work with teammates and classmates in a setting more like the business world – email, conference calls, and online collaborative meetings.
So, other than the WSU thing I was kidding about (mostly), I say go for it!

William asks…
Which are the BEST online Bachelor’s Degree programs?
First, I would like to begin with a brief overview. Currently, I am a 21 year old sophmore attending Hofstra University out on Long Island, NY. I took the first 2 years after graduating high school off, because I honestly didn’t know what I wanted to do. I made the decision I wanted to obtain my B.S. in Finance, Business Administration, or Management so I applied to Hofstra University and was accepted.
I now face a major decision in my life and have come here for honest opinions and possible guidance. I just got offered at job with a base salary of $70,000 which requires full-time work. This means I must leave Hofstra University, but still wanting to obtain my Bachelor’s. I have been reviewing some online programs which will allow me to do both, which is exactly what I want, but I don’t know where to apply. If there’s one thing I want to make clear it’s that I don’t want to attend a typical online degree program (i.e. University of Phoenix, Kaplan University, AIU, Ashford University, etc). I want to attend a well known college such as Boston U, Penn State, etc. however I can only find MBA programs for such.
If you know of any online programs which you think I may like please let me know as I am honestly caught in the crossroads and have little time to make a HUGE decision. I would like to thank you all for reading regardless if you reply. All answers, guidance, and opinions are deeply appreciated. Take care.

Jere answers:
“Best” is such a subjective term that there really hasn’t been a valid rating system for online programs like there have been for traditional programs.
Bottom line is that the best online programs will be at the best traditional colleges. Peterson’s has a pretty good search engine for online programs but remember that the world of distance learning is in a state of constant change. New programs are being added all of the time. Http://www.petersons.com/distancelearning/code/search.asp
A search on bachelor’s with business administration as the major returned five pages to look at. Penn State is on that list. BS in Business Administration http://www.worldcampus.psu.edu/BachelorinBusiness.shtml
Plenty of these are state colleges (Kansas State, UMass, UHawaii, UIllinois, UMichigan, UWisconsin, etc.) that would offer a good combination of quality and price while many others are those “as seen on TV” schools that you probably prefer to avoid.
Take a look at the search engine and see what you think. There are plenty of good options out there. If I were looking for a bachelor’s in a business area, I’d be inclined to like UMass Amherst’s BBA http://www.umassonline.net/degrees/Online-Degree-Bachelor-Business-Administration.cfm
Add: I’m not so sure that the statistical data or the academic research supports Angel’s opinion about the value of a college degree. I’m sure you’re not hoping to stay in this same position at the same salary for the rest of your life. We both know that the degree (any degree) will be needed for advancement.
