Joseph asks…

Best MBA Degree Programs? Do online grad degrees seem a dime a dozen??

I have recently graduated with my bachelors degree in Business Management and am questioning what to do about grad school. Online courses with someone like University of Phoenix sounds convienient and yet, I am worried that they are a diploma mill and viewed as such by employers. Does attending a local university and obtaining an MBA hold more weight in the business world?

Jere answers:

An employer is most likely not going to respect an online MBA degree from University of Phoenix. Since I know how much University of Phoenix costs, I would wonder about the UoP MBA graduate’s cost management skills.

Why spend over $700 per semester credit hour for an MBA program that is not AACSB accredited? Especially when there are AACSB accredited programs that are much cheaper. For those who don’t know, AACSB accreditation is an additional program accreditation for business programs. It is over and above regional accreditation. I believe that all big state universities have AACSB accreditation for their business programs.

If you have the option of attending your local university, that would probably be best. If you have to attend online, Mississippi State University has an AACSB accredited MBA program for $444 per semester credit hour. Http://www.distance.msstate.edu/

Always check accreditation of a school before enrolling. You can do this at http://ope.ed.gov/accreditation/search.asp You can learn more about accreditation at http://www.ed.gov/admins/finaid/accred/index.html You can learn more about AACSB accreditation at http://www.aacsb.edu/

Good luck

Laura asks…

Are there any fields in which an online degree program is generally well-accepted?

Are online degree programs better-accepted in some fields, i.e. Business over Biology?

Jere answers:

Many of the best online programs are in technical fields like software engineering. This is because, when schools started doing online degrees, the teachers and students with technical backgrounds were the best equipped to handle working with the new technology. Now the technology is easily accessible and is being used for all kinds of other area, but you’ll still find that there are many more degrees from top schools in computer or engineering programs.

Online degrees are often looked down on for various reasons. However, if you can pick a field where technology is quickly embraced, you’ll have less stigma from an online degree. So a degree in computer programming or networking will likely be viewed with more respect than other areas simply because people working in those fields are usually on the cutting edge of technology and you’ll find fewer people skeptical of new technology in those fields.

Keep in mind that your choice of school, probably matters more than the specific degree. An online degree from Harvard, Penn State, Stanford or Columbia is going to be more accepted than a degree from University of Phoenix or Capella–regardless of the field.

You’ll probably be better off in your career, picking a field that you enjoy and trying to go to a well recognized school. Your choice of school matters more than the field when it comes to how people will view your degree.

I don’t know what area you are considering or even what level of schooling you have in mind, but here are a few places I’d start by looking at:

Richard asks…

I’M WANTING TO GO TO AN ONLINE SCHOOL FOR BUSINESS. PHOENIX ONLINE IS WHERE I’M MOST LEANING TOWARDS. MY ULTIMATE GOAL IS TO OPEN MY OWN SPA RESORT, BUT I’M UNSURE AS TO WHAT BUSINESS CONCENTRATION I NEED TO GET TO MY GOAL. HERE ARE THE CONCENTRATIONS OFFERED: http://online.phoenix.edu/Degree_Programs.asp. PLEASE DO NOT GIVE ME A SARCASTIC ANSWER OR EDUCATED GUESS. I WANT TO KNOW THE REAL ANSWER ONLY!!! THANK YOU.

Jere answers:

I go to the UOP online and love it.

If I was wanting to open my own business, I would get and accounting degree this is where you will need the knowledge the most.

If accounting is not your forteit then I would just get a management degree it has some accounting and you can always get more if needed.

Michael asks…

Online degree programs worth it?

Is anyone attending? Would you recommend? Does the business world accept this type of degree as being as good as campus attended degree?

Jere answers:

It is true that online degrees are often of lower quality. (DEPENDING on the university/school you attend).

Example: I’m getting my masters through KU. I know all the professors teaching the classes are real professors. They are very knowledgable in their fields. If you ask questions they know the answer and could even list several good books on the subject.
A friend of mine is getting his through a wimpier school. Most of his classes have been taught by principals from different schools. Sure, they are knowledgeable, but it isn’t close.

Online degrees are like that: you aren’t getting the benefit from a truly knowledgable professor.

I did take a couple of online classes back when I was thinking about quiting teaching. I know that (FOR ME) I am just not very motivated by online courses. I don’t study as hard. The material isn’t learned as well because there aren’t discussions and other activities that help you to understand. You can’t bounce ideas off otehr students, etc..

I’m sure they are good in their own way, but you’d ahve to work hard to convince me that online is better then the education I am receiving (and I must admit, I am NOT a jayhawk fan… It’s just close to home… 😀 )
