Your Questions About Business Online Payroll

Michael asks…

How are payroll checks processed through the federal reserve?

I received a payroll check for doing online surveys from another state and my bank said I had to put into savings before any money could be disbursed because it would take at least 3 to 5 business days for the check to clear since it was not a Texas bank.

Jere answers:

Your bank waits to see if the check clears before you are allowed to use it. It protects them. This also happens with personal checks. Just have to wait.

How does one learn how to do payroll in New York?

How does one learn how to do payroll? I have a small business in New York with just one employee other than me. Right now I pay over $100/month for a payroll service, which seems a little silly. If I could learn to do it myself – filing the taxes, etc. – I would give it try. Is there a place online to learn?

Jere answers:

One of choices: if you are doing your books on PeachTree or Quickbooks, there is payroll system in software included, you will need to buy every year updates for payroll.

Your company paying for payroll company to deal with payroll taxed, which has to be filled every quarter.

Sometimes, if you are not very good at accounting / bookkeeping, it just cheaper to pay outsource, than to deal yourself.

If you like to learn all aspect of payroll sign on quickbooks classes online. Or see if any business schools near you offer any payroll included classes.

Carol asks…

Would you use a service to create employee time sheets online?

Basically, if you use paper time cards in your business, would you switch to an online service which would let your employees log their time on the web and do payroll calculations for you (or maybe connect to quickbooks)?

Jere answers:

Personally, no. I’d rather keep time sheets manually and hand them to my bookkeeper at the end of the pay period.
I have four employees in a small construction business.

Charles asks…

What accounting/payroll software is best for small business?

I am starting a new business providing professional services (not selling goods). I expect to have no more than 3-5 employees. I have been searching the reviews for accounting/payroll software and everything is really expensive and way over the top from what I need. Ideally, I would like something to use long term that doesn’t have to be updated and doesn’t require additional fees for services. There is no need to have remote/mobile access and it will only need to be installed on one computer. I do not need direct deposit or online banking download features. I don’t mind inputting the info from state/federal tax tables manually. I would like the check writing feature but it is not absolutely necessary so long as weekly reports can be printed to act as pay-stubs. It is a new business so I don’t have to worry about inputting info from another program. It will be used only on new accounts. Does anyone know what program/software can best meet my needs for the lowest cost?
