Your Questions About Business Online Services

Michael asks…
My laptop is business is not picking up. Suggest me some measures to promote my business online and offline?
I have started an laptop business 14 days back but I have not got the response which I hoped for. I am trying to pass on maximum benefit to customers, giving them best rates and regularly updating them.
The problem with our business is that we are not so strong financially so we are unable to keep demo laptops in office and customer asks demo pieces sometimes. Well I don’t think so that it’s a big problem…
Now I want to re-create my marketing strategy. Kindly suggest me some measures. I will be oblidged. Thanks!

Jere answers:
Always listen to the customer – if demos are what they ask for then that is where your marketing money should go. We opened a floral shop with very little capitol – our biggest marketing tool was to donate to every charity – your name goes on their news list and sometimes we just donated $10 – we also donated our services and product to the chinese auctions and other charity events around the county – then our name was announced to the public and our services were used creating word of mouth customers. It always cost less than traditional advertising. And members always tried to use donators services first when in need of a product.

Jere answers:
Hiring an experienced web marketer or SEO worker to get the job done for you would be the best way in my opinion.
However, if you can’t afford to pay, you could check these few suggestions :
1. Social Media Marketing : Known as the best method to gain natural traffic, these day Social Media has been heavily spammed. So, you should use unique method to advertise your site in Social media. Regularly interact with your customers are the right way to establish a good relationship with them and increase your sales.
2. Make your sites look professional : If you want to expand your sales through Internet platform, you should have a well looking and professional sites as platform. People love a secure and reliable site, and you should have it. It’s depend on your business, it’s B2B or retail? Do you have shopping carts inserted so people can buy it directly? Richard asks…
How do I protect intellectual property, related to an online service and computer programming code?
I am putting together workflows, screens, data architecture and subcontracting computer code to be written to support my new startup business. What are the minimal steps I need to take to start a company and get NDA or signatures to protect my IP, so the developers don’t run off and start a competing business or take my code and business concept and run off with them?

Jere answers:
At a minimum you need to do the following:
1 – To set up your business you need to register the business in your state under a Corporation (C or S) or LLC, get a EIN (employer identification number) and open a business checking account
2 – To protect your IP you need to create a NDA for each contractor. But beware, unless you have the finances to legally go after a breach of the NDA, it is worthless outside of making someone think that you will pursue a breach. You should put one in place but it can be costly to pursue if needed. I recommend if possible that you piecemeal the work so that no contractor gets enough to understand the full scope and secret sauce of the project.
Hope this helps.

Chris asks…
How do you deal with critics who trash your business online?
I own a bakery in the midwest and apparently someone who is not a fan started spreading false rumors about us online, trashing our brand in every opportunity. I think its our competitor, but I can’t prove it. What can I do to help battle this thing?

Jere answers:
Prove the critics wrong by giving out great service to your customers. It may or may not be your competitors’ doing so don’t assume. If they are unethical in dealing with their business, it’s going to surface eventually. If you can publicly reply to the critics online, ask them to come to your shop again personally so you can service them better. That way, other readers can see how genuine you are. Just keep in mind that your product is not your bakery, it’s you. When you are able to connect with people, that’s how you will sell 🙂 Good luck!

Is it possible for a 16 year old American guy to get his own apartment in a Paris?
I don’t want to live here anymore, my parents are cool with it so it’s not like I would be running away. I am very mature for my age and have been alone in large cities for days, practically by myself, while my parents attended business conferences. I do an online school service so school is no problem. Money is not really a problem either, but a cheaper solution would be great.

Jere answers:
Your parents could be charged with child abandonment if the authorities discovered your plan. Also, if you are being home schooled, or in your case, Internet schooled, don’t your parents have to submit periodic reports and proof of achievement to your local school authorities? The home school statutes differ from state to state, so that may not be the case where you reside.
