Your Questions About Business Online Services Social Security

Ken asks…

What is the best accounting service for a very small business? Quickbooks or a local accountant?

I have started a very small cleaning business and after doing the work myself for a while, now I need an employee or two. And of course, I will need accounting service. Should I go with a local accountant around here, so I will have a real person to work with? Or should I go with one of the online services such as Quickbooks, I see that Xerox has one, and I also see some others I have not heard of which claim to be free. If you say to go with an online service, which one is the best and what has been your experience with them?

I desperately need some answers from some other small business owners who have been where I am. You are the only ones who will truly understand my situation and have a legitimate answer. I need something or someone to do my employees social security, medicare and other deductions. Plus, many other things I am not yet aware of. I am thinking that a local accountant would be good as they could help me with the state forms and taxes I have to fill out and pay also; they could also do my income tax at the end of each year….that seems like a big plus….I just really am not sure what to do.

Sincerely, thanks in advance for your time!

I work for a small accounting firm where we specialize in providing accounting services to restaurants. After working there two years, my suggestion for the best would be finding a good CPA to do your accounting work. I work for a CPA and use QuickBooks to do the day-to-day stuff like paying bills, creating paychecks, filing quarterly payments, etc. For the restaurants but I think where the big payback to the restaurant owners comes in (besides doing their taxes) is having access to someone who specializes in their field and they can ask him what if questions – such as I’m looking to expand or buy additional equipment and will timing make a difference on my taxes? There’s also the letters from the IRS – having someone knowledgeable about your business who can respond in a timely manner is a big plus. I’ve seen where they make mistakes but you’ve got to know the tax code and have the record backup.

My suggestion for second best would be doing the accounting in-house with a software package but still lining up a CPA for your taxes.

Please help me with my website ideas?

I’m 13. Over the summer, I want to start an online business. I have many ideas, but ive posted the two that struck me the most. I feel these are great ideas, but I’m not sure which one to choose. My goal would be to make six or more figures a year. I know that sounds crazy since I’m only 13, but it’s my goal. I would love to become financially independent.

1. My first idea is my favorite. It is a website where users can submit original songs, and other users can listen, rate, comment, share, and chat. There would also be features where users could post info and where bands could find new band members. I would make money from selling ad space, and maybe creating a pro membership with extra features if the site becomes big enough. Some problems I ran into when I was thinking on this idea was not having enough money to create the site. I thought it could cost $100,000 to have a web design firm create the site. Then i realized my cousin has been at RIT majoring in web design and programming for 2 years. I asked him, and he said he would be happy to build the site. Althoguh he may not be a professional, this site that he builds could be a “beta” launch, and money I make from it, I would reinvest into the site. My grandparents also called me yesterday saying they would love to give me money for marketing.

Idea 1 Overview
Target Customer: musicians, artists, independent artists, songwriters, record producers.
Revenue: ad space, pro membership
Variable Costs: websit matinence, domain, hosting, marketing
Type of business: online business, online company, internet business, Internet company, small business, service business, social network site, online community.

2. My second idea is quite simple. I would create a basic website with storefront capability, and sell musical instruments such as guitars, bass, drums, keyboards, dj, mixers, lighting. I would buy the products from a wholesale/dropship company. Vthey would dropship the items when I give them the order details. I would price competitively but price to make a nice profit.

Target customer: musicians, bands, artists, guitarists, djs, keyboardists, record producers, drummers, bassists.
Revenue: ads on site, selling products
Costs: website, website matinence, domain, hosting, wholesale products, marketing
Type of business: online business, retail, ecommerce.

Idea 3. This would be a website where users can store photos and or data on a secure digital storage site. It would cost users 4.49 a month and they get a certain amount of storage. My cousin would program the site. I would also have great security features for customers. This is a new idea and I know I would be competing with brands such as mozy, photo bucket, etc, but I feel I can start small and build up a better brand name.

Overall, I love the first idea and the third.. Which idea should I do? Which idea is more profitable? Even if you don’t like either, please choose the one of the above if you had to choose. I have been going to a Business Camp at my school and I enjoy it.

It’s a big goal and being open I don’t think you can handle it.

Mandy asks…

How can I get my money back from an online scam or, at least stop them from taking money out of my account?

In january I signed up to process rebates online. This opportunity was offered by a woman named Angel Stevens. I was looking for opportunities to work from home by choice, I was not sent an email offer. I figured I should take a chance, with the “you only live once” mindset, and gave this this person my debit card info. I did not give out my social security number, I would definitely have to downright stupid to do such a thing. A couple of weeks later, $197 was taken out of my account, which I was fully aware I would be paying for. The same night I found the website, I thought I would begin my training. Instead, I got something totally different. They wanted me to start my own website and gave me very foggy instructions to do so. I was also offered a special service that was supposed to help me get my career up and running. It was of no use to me. It also required a monthly membership fee of $39.95. I have contacted Angel Stevens and customer service, both by email and phone. I was told that I would get a refund for both $197 and the $39.95, as well as have my membership cancelled and recieve a confirmation email. That was almost a month ago and I have not gotten any results. I feel so ashamed for not looking into this furthur. The website gave Angel’s home and business emails along with customer service email and a phone number, I figured it was legitimate. I’m hoping I can at least stop the $39.95 a month from coming out of my checking account. Is there anyone I can contact? I have LifeLock, will that help? Will I have to contact my bank and close my account and open a new account?

Jere answers:

It is possible for you to contact your bank to avoid any future bank account debits associated with this organization. Just to be sure, you may inquire with your bank about closing out this account to open up a new one. I would probably go that route if I were you.

As for the organization that scammed you, I would try calling everyday to complain about the situation in hopes that “the squeaky wheel will get oiled”. You may also file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission, which is free and available completely online.

The Better Business Bureau is also known to help consumers with mediation in situations such as this one. Assuming that the organization is legitimate, it is very possible to get its attention when the BBB contacts it on your behalf. Of course, if the organization is full of a bunch of “scam dogs,” this will be quite a bit less effective. In any case, it doesn’t hurt to try.

Good luck to you!

Donald asks…

Is this a sign that employers are finally ‘getting it’? Double the number of employers signed up?

for voluntary program for verification of Social Security numbers?

“Ratcliff said her agency is designing a promotional campaign to reach out to employers, especially those in critical facilities such as nuclear power plants, to encourage them to use the federal verification service, which she said has been refined over the years and will soon be more accurate and faster. Currently, 80 percent of employee names, identification documents and Social Security numbers can be validated within a matter of seconds by the online system, she said.

If a name or Social Security number does not check out instantly, the employee is given eight days to respond. Some of these cases turn out to be clerical mistakes, the failure to report a name change, or the failure of an immigrant to report to the Social Security Administration that he or she has become a citizen. Others cases indicate that a person is an illegal worker, she said.”

Do you think this is a good thing?

Jere answers:

Great information. I strongly support it. But my guess is that most of the real violater industries dont have many volunteers on the list. Id be suprised if there are many Homebuilder companies on that list for example, since they live and die by how many slaves (oops, illegals) they have working. And all of those other manual labor industries that Americans used to be able to get jobs in, until we got this new breed of slaves that are willing to work for $10 a day. Isnt that sad? So many Mexicans are mad at the US for wanting Mexicans to go through the legal immigration process, become citizens, and get paid a living wage for the work they do. How terrible of us! The funny thing is, a lot of those pro-slave people are the same ones that are fighting to raise the minimum wage to a living wage. They arent even smart enough to realize that they are fighting to make a slave class, versus a higher class of American citizens. Its all very sad.
