Daniel asks…

How much does cooperative direct mail marketing cost?

I’m curious to know if anyone knows (ballpark) how much it costs to send out a small flyer in a cooperative direct mail marketing envelope such as valpak. Does anyone here have any experience with how much it may cost per thousand flyers or anything like that to give me a general idea of the costs?

Jere answers:

Ethan… Get other local companies in on the act… Ask them to split the costs… And… Because you organised it… You don’t pay a cent!

Thomas asks…

Does anybody know of any good books relating to direct mail marketing?

I am a small business owner and looking for more information on direct mail and media marketing. I do not know much about this aspect of business running and looking for the “bible” if you will on how to do mail outs, what time of year, etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated or any resources on the topic that I can get from the library. Thanks very much.

Jere answers:

Seasonality, etc. Is dependent on your industry (e.g.if your retail business is trying to get orders in for Christmas purchasing you’d usually start a direct mail campaign in Sept).

Check out some websites: http://www.the-cma.org/ and http://www.bcaim.org/

Both of these are Canadian sites but they have good reference material.

Linda asks…

Are you aware of any research that measures the combined effect of direct mail and email marketing a business?

Looking for metrics to quantify the lift a direct mail marketing campaign can achieve when augmented with an email marketing campaign.
I’m looking for existing research that’s available, not how to conduct my own.

Jere answers:

You have to set it up so a holdout cell of records gets only direct mail. The quantity depends on your overall universe. The other test cells obviously have both direct mail and email. You can then measure the impact in response rates by looking at a cost per lead or other cost-per metric. You need to do it with costs because obviously it’s more money to do both direct mail and email.
