Your Questions About Direct Marketing Association

Nancy asks…

What is the correct address for the Mail Preference Service?

I’m trying to get off the Direct Marketing Association mailing list so I will stop receiving junk mail and I have several addresses (2 in Carmel NY with different po boxes, one in Farmington NY) and their official website says I need to give them a check for $1 to get off the list but all the other websites don’t say anything about that (including the USPS website). Does anyone know what the correct address and instructions are?

Jere answers:

The Mail Preference Service division of the Direct Marketing Association (known as DMA) compiles a list of people who do not want junk mail. This list is provided to any company who requests it, usually magazines.

Write Mail Preference Service and request your name, address, and phone number be deleted from all mailing and marketing lists. Provide them with three spellings or variations of your name, as well as with any other names at your address (including previous occupants). They will retain your information for five years. At that time you should write again. Be sure to write when you move. Send your name and address. Be sure to sign and date your letter.

Mail Preference Service
c/o Direct Marketing Association
PO Box 9008
Farmingdale, NY 11735-9008
212.768-7277

Joseph asks…

Can I trust that company that supposedly stops you from getting paper junk mail?

This may seem like a stupid question, but you know that company, the DMA (Direct Marketing Association), the company that is supposed to remove your name from the junk mail list. What keeps them from doing something shady with your information? How can we trust they don’t give our information out to other companies?

Jere answers:

Of course, in this day and age, it is hard to know who to trust. But, if you are willing to trust government (at least on something like this), check out the government link regarding this stuff:
http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/alerts/alt063.shtm

Not only do they provide links on whom to contact to stop junk mail, email, etc., but there is a bunch of stuff onthe bottom to complain if something bad happens. A little bit of extra protection.

C. The company needs to counterattack international competitors in their home markets.
D. Foreign markets present higher profit opportunities.
E. Global competitors have offered similar products at lower prices.

RATIONALE: b) The company would have to redesign its products. Because it’s a cost (that could be significant) that the company has to pay upfront to enter the market. A) and d) are favorable reasons to enter international market. C) could be perceived as an hindrance to enter other national markets, but of a lesser extent because the company in its own country is probably already competing with those competitors, so doing the same outside its national market doesn’t really make any difference. Carol asks…

How to stop junk mail flyers?

How do you stop the junk mail flyers from stores and restaurants that get crammed into my mail box – a lot of these are not addressed to anyone

I already opted out on the Direct Marketing Association (DMA) but it didn’t worl

AND how do you stop people from leaving flyers at your door (that do not come in the mail)

Jere answers:

I’m having the same issue. I hate getting those darn flyers on my door. My only idea is to leave a sign saying “NO MORE FLYERS or I’m going to burn your damn business down!!!” Too harsh?

Linda asks…

Other than opting out of pre-screened credit and insurance offers, and the federal “do not call” registry****

**** and the direct marketing association at www.dmaconsumers.org, are there any other opt out programs from credit and insurance offers?

Jere answers:

Check to see if your state has an opt-out list for consumers. Ours does (Kentucky). It’s wonderful not to be interrupted by a marketer while I make dinner.
