Your Questions About Direct Marketing Companies

Mandy asks…

How do you propose to market to an untapped market? What are the best ways to advertise?

I work for a direct marketing company and we sell heaters among other things. I have been asked to come up with ways to market to untapped markets. Should I go the traditional route newspaper ads, commercials and so forth or try to think of something outside of the box.

Jere answers:

Are you talking about portable heaters?

Untapped markets to me would be specific Niches. Elders/home health care. I.e. One person hot, one cold. Put heater on side of room of colder person (usually the one ill, or older)

Construction/contractors companies. Portable heaters for winter time work doing re-models.

Portable heaters for those in manufactured homes, cabins, etc.

How to reach? Speciality newspapers and publications.

Develop a brochure showing how heaters are more green than central heating …tap into green movement. Advertise this in newspapers. Just some quick ideas. Feel free to re-ask if I didn’t understand the product you are selling.

Also, consumer trade shows is a good well for direct marketers to sell

Helen asks…

What to wear to a job that I will be touring?

I had a phone interview for a direct marketing company and I’m scheduled to come in to tour around the place for different positions so they can see what position would work best for me. I’m not what sure what I should wear since I’m working at a facility for either a Machine Operator, computer work, or shipping/receiving.

I know I don’t have to dress to professional So I’m guessing I should just go in wearing some dark jeans and a button up shirt. Any help?

Jere answers:

I’d kick it up one notch — something other than jeans. Khakis maybe. Good luck!

Sandra asks…

What advice would you give someone going to an interview for a position in Advertising Sales?

I will interview with a successful direct mail marketing company looking for an Advertising Salesperson tomorrow…Any good words of wisdom?
I think asking for tips from others is an excellent way to improve my ability to impress an interviewer
I have a B.S. in Mass Communications with an emphasis in advertising. I am fresh out of college, have excellent references from my professors but no outside sales experience. I have worked at my campus’ bookstore (sales associate/receiving) and at a hotel front desk.
The company is very successful. I look forward to receiving their mailings because they are packed with coupons for restaurants, hotels, etc. They have expanded all over two states (starting from a small market.)

Hi There,

The advise given above are mostly applicable in your scenario so I will not repeat them. Pay heed especially to Ad Man’s advise. However I would like to add a few pointers and hopefully you have a chance to do it.

$$$$$

Find out who the current clients are for the company and whom they are targeting next. If you know of any new prospects for the company this would be a good time to discuss.

Generally the company principals/seniors are proud of their achivement and their products. However they would want more. According to marslow, in the upper pyramid is self actualisation. Work on that pyramid. In short, get to know the company’s sucesses and USP and praise them. Tell them that you wish to be part of that team. A.K.A lay the butter.

A person that can interpret the needs of the company and job scope required is often look upon positively.

You can be strategic and “tell” them your weakness and let them “guide” you. Sort of be a firm but humble person. I am sure there will be many people before you with experience and similar skills. A little humility will go a long way.

Ask. Ask. Ask . Direct your questions to the industry they are in and situational scenario. This is a gambit that can pay dividents. Eg. Ask about the early days scenario and current scenario. Why and whom. Be an enthusiast about the industry and show energy. 🙂

Good luck mate. Please let me how it went. And in anticiapation of a great interview and appointment, Welcome to the Industry where sucess is a mind game.

You can come and go in the ad industry but you can never really leave.

Good luck

How much longer can Glenn Beck stay afloat?

As of today, 62 companies have stopped their ads from running on Beck’s show. Every national company with a name you’d recognize is gone. What’s left are mostly far-right groups and direct marketing companies selling things like gold coins and discounted exercise equipment.
paulcondo: You are 100% right!

Jere answers:

You can all type of good rating but if you don’t make any money your gone

James asks…

how can i block junk mail from my post office box?

i get a minimal amount of personal mail in my po box but it is always filled with direct mail pieces, especially Jewel advertisements. I’ve spoke with USPS and they said to contact a direct marketing company to have my box removed from the list but I don’t know how to contact them. Any suggestions for stopping junk mail?

Jere answers:

Unfortunatly you can’t specify what type of mail that you want or don’t want. The Post Office is paid by mailers to deliver whatever they send to every mailbox, be it on the street or a PO Box. Sorry.
