Your Questions About Direct Marketing Jobs

Joseph asks…
Do you know of legitimate work from home jobs?
I am not looking for direct sales jobs. I am looking for customer service, data entry, etc. type jobs. Preferably some place that does not require a land line as all I use is my cell phone.

Jere answers:
The work from home jobs that aren’t scams actually require work on your part – and if you’re in need of money soon then you’re likely to be sorely disappointed in any of those as well. Most of the legit opportunities out there take time to build – so if someone makes an outrageous claim of income it probably isn’t true ( and those that are true sure didn’t make that kind of money when they first began ).

Time & effort required – but do your own research on what is best for you, don’t take the advice of myself and others as gospel from this type of forum.

I have other ideas that may help – one of them is an online opportunity but another is one that will require a little effort to market yourself – try some data entry for local businesses, many of them don’t have the time to do it in-house and will gladly pay someone else to do it. Professionals are a good place to start, lawyers, doctors, chiropractors, etc – they need their “in-house” folks doing other things rather than busy work.

Lizzie asks…
Where should I go for Public Relations job listings?
I have a degree, so I don’t want the marketing/sales jobs that require nothing more than a HS diploma that come up in Hot Jobs. I want to find a place that will list legit PR jobs that are for entry level students w/ a BA degree. Any suggestions?

Jere answers:
PRSA for national/regional jobs
Check specific cities and apply direct to the PR firms in the cities you want to live/work in.
Look for specialized recruiters working in placement in the PR industry.

Jenny asks…
What are the typical marketing solutions available to small businesses?
I have a job interview next week for a job working with Google AdWords for a small marketing business. In the job description it states that I should have a sound knowledge of ‘the typical marketing solutions available to small businesses’. I have a brief idea but I just wanted to brush-up my knowledge and double check that I have the right idea.
Thanks to anyone who can help 🙂

Jere answers:
Sam,
I think what they are implying here is that smaller businesses don’t quite have the same budgets as larger entities. Therefore, suggesting channels of promotion that aren’t 1) Expensive and 2) Don’t take a whole lot of direct admin. Costs to start working. If you’re discussing Adwords, then there are other online channels of promotion such as social media (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Yelp). You should understand how those work and how to leverage. You can in fact run PPC (pay-per-click) like Adwords in Facebook. If they are thinking traditional marketing mix, then simple direct mailers, flyers, etc. Would be what you would want to suggest. In retrospect, larger firms might be investing in focus groups, A/B content testing, and other means that allows them to refine and focus a message. As long as you understand ‘marketing best practices’ then the channel doesn’t really matter. The two elements that are most important here are what is within reach and cost effective. For Adwords in particular, doing extensive keyword research and finding the low lying fruit will get you the best results. Generalized keywords, although have high volume of searches, are also the same words with high level of competition. Finding a niche’ and sticking with it is your best bet.
