Your Questions About Direct Marketing Strategies

Chris asks…

How to get in the line of sight for the next promotion? What marketing strategy do I need to market myself?

I’m currently in managment but looking to obtain a role with direct reports for the experience. I don’t have a mentor and I really feel like I need one. I don’t know what I should or shouldn’t do to be considered. I know that I’m doing a good job because of the positive feedback I get. I just don’t know if its good enough to stand out.

Jere answers:

Depends upon your organisation. Make your manager and HR aware of your career plans. Thats a start.

Could you speak with HR and manager, or mamnger of the bit you want to work in and just ask – what would i need to do to get such a position in next 12-24 months type thing. Our speak to a simialr organisation and find out ther policy on internal promotion and etc.

You say about experience – maybe you can get some of that without being a direct manager, consider that. Maybe you have those skills but from outside work.

The higher you go the more it is about personal networking, so develop your contacts and use them. Remember you may have those favours “called in” one day. If you really determined and really cant get any assistance or guidance get an external perosn in (careers advisor/life coach etc) and get them to help. Good Luck

Rasulullah (pbuh) was a trader.

A general guidance I follow regarding marketing is when we’re selling something, we have to be honest about things we sell.

Nancy asks…

marketing offensive/defensive strategies/tactics?

i need to find some actual examples of organisations that have used these strategies. so far i have examples of defence strategies but im stuck on whos used offensive (attack) strategies………

Encirclement strategy- surround opponent with range of specific products/services but avoid direct competition.

Flank attack- attack competition’s weak spot (undefended segment/aging product)

Bypass attack- move in to areas not covered by opponents

Guerilla attack – hit and run, short term measures such as price cuts and promotions

if you could make some suggestions that would be brill!

Paul asks…

What is the best combination of strategies to market a company?

For example:
Is it?
1.newpaper ads
2.on ebay
3.direct mail

Jere answers:

The best strategy is to carefully examine your business goals (usually product sales), and identify ALL of the marketing channels that may bring you customers. This might include newspaper ads, eBay auctions, offering products through Amazon’s Marketplace, direct mail, banner advertising, free and paid directory listings (possibly including Yellow Pages), forum participation, classified ad sites, billboards, PPC search ads on Google and Yahoo, TV and radio ads, email newsletter sponsorships, bumper stickers, press releases, contests and give-aways, publicity stunts, a variety of “guerilla marketing” techniques, sampling, seeking reviews, targeting influencers, and a zillion other possibilities.

From that list, you’d develop rankings or priorities, and you’d consider how various marketing strategies might interact or conflict. Then you’d “test, test, test” and experiment until you find something that works, or until you run out of money.

There is no “best combination” that would apply to more than one company, and even if you identified the specific company and goals, if you hired 10 different agencies you’d get 10 different “combinations” (although there would certainly be overlap).
