Paul asks…
How do I start an online business that exports from China to the rest of the world?
For some reason I can’t find anything clear cut on how to do this? Do I need to register a business in the U.S., because I am an American citizen. Or are online businesses different? Beyond a domain name what do I really need in order to run a legit export business that operates totally online? No employees, maybe sell in bulk or retail, want both options. I’m not interested in the step by step plan about starting a successful business, only the legal side of creating an online business that sells products either on ebay or directly to customers wholesale and/or retail.

Jere answers:
1. You’ll have to register the business with the government
2. You’ll need to get a DBA tax number (if sole proprietor- it’s usually your social)
3. You’ll need to research state/local tax obligation and it needed, register for a sales tax certificate.
4. Obtain all business licenses needed to run a business in your industry.
Just because a business is only online and you may never see the product you sell (since you’re export from Asia -dropshipping?), does not mean you don’t have to register it with the government and IRS. Although some people will try to sell on eBay as a business and never register the business, it usually catches up with them and trust me, you don’t want the IRS to come for you!

Nancy asks…
If I go to live in China, but earn money from my business in UK, do I have to pay tax twice?
I would live there and just manage my business online and by hiring people back home in UK.
I mean can the mony contiue going to my English bank account and just spend it in China, or will there be some complex tax stuff to set up. (obviously still paying the usual tax in UK)

Jere answers:
If you are not UK rsident then any earnings in China will be taxed there and not in the UK.
However, any business has to be in China, and if you’re hiring people in the UK it could be argued that the business is UK based, and liable to UK taxation.

Mark asks…
I don’t like the job much and I want to start an online business to sell products. What can I do now?
I don’t well at my job, I’m afraid that my boss will fire me. I don’t like the job much and I want to start an online business on ebay. I live in China. Why don’t I quit? Because I need some money to start my business. I am very poor right now. But the salary of the job is low. So what can I do?

Jere answers:
Work on e-bay in your own time so no one knows what you are doing, it is not there concern. Just be careful.
