Your Questions About Doing Business Online Taxes

Mark asks…

Taxes with online business?

I have an online business. I am incorporated through the state of NJ. Although, when I do my taxes, if I have revenue through other states, do I need to pay separate taxes through that state as well?? Not sure of the tax law with that

Jere answers:

If you ship there, no. If you go there, yes.

Sandra asks…

If I make 60k per year at my job and 100k from my online business do I pay taxes on 160k or both separate?

I’m just curious on the tax bracket situation. Do I pay the 160k I made in a year or do I pay the 60k separate and the 100k separate. I live in California and have a Business registered with a tax ID. Any help would be appreciated.

Jere answers:

There isn’t enough information to answer the question.

What kind of business entity do you have?

Is it a LLC or Corporation? If so what type? Is it a C Corporation or a S Corporation? Is it a single person LLC or multiple owners? Is it a partnership or is it just a Sole Proprietor?

Without knowing what type of business entity you have nobody can give you a reasonable answer.

Paul asks…

Do I have to pay federal taxes for having an online business drop shipping?

We have someone that ships out the product for us. We do not carry any inventory.

Jere answers:

You pay federal income taxes (and state if applicable) on the net income you make.

You calculate that by taking the Gross Income you get and deducting all your expenese and costs of the products.

If you are making money then you owe taxes.

You should probably get some advice from a competent tax advisor.

Joseph asks…

Do Online Business have to pay taxes? License?

I am opening up my own tiara/crown pageant store on the internet only. I am the only person working for my business. I was wondering do I have to pay taxes? Even if I do not charge tax? I live in Missouri.. How do you go about getting a tax id number? Do you have to have any more licenses for an online business?
THANKS!:)

Jere answers:

Brittney,

All of those questions are very valid. You will have to pay corporate/LLC taxes every year. In order to get a tax ID number you must incorporate your business (which will cover your license for your business as well), there are many ways to do it but our company works closely with a great company that has low prices on their incorporation fees. You can reach me at sales@firstbankcardprocessing.com for more information. We are out of Chicago, IL and we are a credit card processing company, we can help you out with accepting credit cards online as well so you can get your business up and running and accepting online payments.

Chris asks…

I am trying to file business taxes from an online store, what do I need to have ready?

I am so scared, we recently opened an online store and don’t know where to start to file taxes, I don’t want to mess up, there is a big amount of money moving in our account but just a little profit.
What deductions can I make and what will they ask me for when I file?
Can someone help?

Jere answers:

Using turbo tax will walk you through the expenses. If you are scared, then go to a tax preparer/CPA firm (not H&R block). The main categories you will have will be office supplies, cost of goods sold (stuff you sold), internet fees, shipping, etc. It may seem daunting, but sit and go through your expenses and classify by type.
