Does one have to register their online business in Canada?
Planning to start an online business , i live in Canada. Do i have to register it? as most of my business will cater to people from all around the world. more less no in customer visits in canada, its like more less computer programming services?
If i do have to register? who and where do i register with and how do i go about doing that? do i need a lawyer?

Jere answers:
You do not need to register a business if you are the sole proprietor. You are merely a private contractor, like a handyman, doctor, author, etc.
You have to report income to Revenue Canada as a self-employment income, which means tracking income and expenses, declaring the difference as self-employment income, etc. You will need to apply for a GST number, and if you earn more than $30,000/year you need to charge GST to Canadian customers and remit this quarterly.
However, if you don’t set yourself up as either an incorporated or limited company… You pay personal income tax rates (rather than lower corporate rates), and you are personally liable for debts.

Donald asks…
If I run an online business, do I need to get a business license in California AND also register a dba?
I am opening an online business, selling goods, and another one selling services. I would like to know – since this is an online venture (and open to people around the world), do i need to also register for a business license in California (where I am located), and also a dba?

Jere answers:
If your online business is making more than $9,000 per year, or you plan it will this year, then yes you need to incorporate for tax purposes. Having a business license is good anyway, it will allow you to open a checking account in your businesses name, and buy products through wholesalers. To register you business and it’s name your going to need forms that meet your state requirements. It’s pretty easy to do and doesn’t require a lawyer. You can download a kit or order a book that will include the forms and guide you through the entire process at the link below.

Thomas asks…
Are MBAs received from an online university as respected as those received from a traditional university?
I am considering going for my MBA. With kids and a career, it will be difficult to physically attend classes on a campus. There are a lot of universities offering online degrees, but how are they respected in the business world? Do potential employers consider them “as good as” a traditional MBA degree? Or is it not even an issue?

Jere answers:
I can only make the recommendation that you get a degree that is AACSB accredited. Also, don’t mention that your degree was online, a good school won’t designate that it was obtained online.
