Your Questions About How To Do Business Online

Thomas asks…
How to apply for Id number for online business?
I’m wanting to start an online business selling wholesale and homemade dog treats. How do I go about applying for one if I’m starting an ONLINE business? And is it free? I’ve found information on it but nothing talks about how to apply starting a business online ?? Any links or tips on how to start would help a lot!!! Thanks

Jere answers:
If you are going to start a LEGITIMATE business then you will need an ID number.
However if you are just going to sell on ebay or on amazon you don’t need such numbers. Infact you don’t even need to register your company.
I think the id number you are talking about is called an ITIN – individual tax payer ID number. You can sign up for that on – http://www.irs.gov/Individuals/Individual-Taxpayer-Identification-Number-(ITIN)
That is the official irs webstie you can sign up on.
If you need help starting a business go to legalzoom.com you can register for a business on that website in about 30 minutes for about $300.
Again – if this is not MAJOR, something you will only make $500 – $1000 in revenue, YOU DO NOT NEED TO DO THIS.
You will just need to report this income on your taxes.
Good luck!

I live in NYC and we have one called “Fresh Direct” – I use it all the time.
You can check out their website (freshdirect.com) but you need to put in a zip code – try 10023.
Good Luck

I want to start my own online music download website. How and where do I legally obtain the downloads of music?
I want to start my own music download business online how do I and what sources can I go to obtain the downloads and sell them legally online?

Jere answers:
You can obtain media files by going into partnership with different media companies. When into partnership, these media companies give you the distribution rights for you to distribute the music files and hence you are able to allow download of music on your website according to the terms and condition that you and the other party agreed on.

How do I start a business?
I am trying to start my own business (online boutique) but have NO IDEA where to start! If anyone can point me in the right direction, I’d really appreciate it. How do I go about making my hobby into a business and making things official. Is it difficult and does it cost a lot? What is the process?
Any info is greatly appreciated!
Also I live in Texas if that makes a difference.

Jere answers:
If, by official, you mean, for legal purposes, then you may want to reconsider making things official until your business is running successfully and making money. Most businesses fail, and business men and women often start several businesses until they find one that actually makes money. If you make every business official with all the paperwork, fees, etc, that is a lot of time and money down the drain if the businesses fail. If, however, you wait until the business is successful, and then file paperwork, the fees may (but probably won’t) be slightly greater because you filed the paperwork late.

What can i do if someone prevents a sale of my business?
Someone slandered my business online and prevented me from selling an animal because of the comments they made but they didn’t say a name, just said we had sick animals, which many others know we do not. Can i take any legal action against him?

Jere answers:
It depends on many factors:
1) The title to your post discusses the sale of a business but your question addresses the sale of a sick animal (not your business).
2) You must show that but for the posting, Mr/Ms. XYZ would have purchased the animal.
3) You must also show that the animal was not sick and the poster lied.
