Your Questions About How To Do Business Online

Mark asks…
How does one take his small business online?
I’d like to know how a small business owner would make the move from just having a store and selling locally, to having an online store and selling internationally. Thanks!

Jere answers:
Going online simply means establishing a presence by offering your products or services globally. It does not require another business but set up a website and start to add your web address to your business cards and other promotional materials, register with search engines, and get your company out there with a reason for customers to visit your website and pass the address to others. Don’t waste your webspace with fancy graphics and free games. Make your offerings related to your specialty so others will visit and refer their friends. Check out your competition online to see what they are doing right and wrong. Don’t just set up a website and leave it… Update, ask for feedback, develop a mailing list, ask for referrals, but mainly give people a reason not only to visit your site but a reason to return.

Sandy asks…
If I opened a business online, what would a lawyer cost if I am not paying hourly?
This is for a college assignment. We are not really going to create an online business, but if we did, how much would the cost of a lawyer be? I cannot find an answer with costs, only tips on how to find lawyers. It does not have to be a spectacular lawyer, just a good/mediocre one.

Jere answers:
Get the phone book. Find the section on lawyers. Call and ask how much they charge to help set up an online business. A lot depends on the nature of the business, and what exactly you would need the lawyer to do.

Carol asks…
How do I promote my business online with little to no money for advertising?
A friend and I are launching a new website in a few weeks and I need my website indexed before the Fall 2010 Holiday season.

Jere answers:
Indexing is relatively easy. Depending on the type of site you have I would advise you submit relevant sitemaps to Google, Yahoo etc. This is very easy and if you need help there are plug ins and scripts that can do the job for you. Also, to get quickly indexed you can use social bookmarking eg, yahoo Buzz, Google Bookmarks, Stumbleupon, once you have created some content.
To elevate your website in the indexes is the tricky part. Search Engine Optimization techniques need to be used which include article marketing, more social bookmarking, backlink creation, directory submissions and the like. It is also useful to find forums that specialize in your market and create profiles on those forums with links to your website in your signature/profile.

Mary asks…
How to promote travels business online?
Can someone tell me how do i promote my tours and travels business online

Jere answers:
I work with clients in the travel industry. Here’s a sequence I take them through, that you might consider too:
1. Participate in travel forums, with links to your website in your posts (if allowed) and your profile.
2. Same as #1 with travel blogs
3. Article marketing.
4. PPC content network campaign.
5. PPC search network campaign.
Make sure your landing page or home page has a defined call to action, i.e. Sign up for the next tour, give us a call, etc.
Hope this helps,
Roger

John asks…
I want to start a private publishing business online. How can i maximise the potentials and make it profitable?
i am a journalist and good with words and good with the internet, but how do i generate adverts and readership?

Jere answers:
1/ Decide what type of book you wish to publish. Technical / fiction?
2/ look at books already published – @ for sale on Amazon.
3/ if you have a particular sphere of interest/expertise consider writing a book yourself. (There is an enormous amount to be learned about book production: typography / layout ./ printing & binding – and then selling / marketing..)
4/ It’s a long haul, but absorbing / interesting.
5/ Once you have written / acquired the text of a book / decided to publish it / look at the services of a company called Lulu (ridiculous name but one of the best online methods of putting a boom into print)
5 DO NOT have anything to do with Vanity Publishing!
