Your Questions About How To Do Business Taxes Online

Daniel asks…

Are small online businesses subject to paying taxes?

I am thinking about beginning a gift shop online and was wondering if the business is super small, would I still need to charge sales tax… if so, how do I know what to charge?

Jere answers:

You’d charge sales tax to buyers in your state, and send the sales tax you collect to your state. You need a state tax id to do this – get it from your state dept of revenue.

starting a small online business? need tax id?

I am employed but hope to start something on the side. I would like to sell ad space or use adsense. the website does not generate any income, but if it does with time, should I incorporate the website anyway (at this time or in the future)? (LLC). how much does it cost? my only concern is tax advantage. If i don’t incorporate will all my earnings (from a job and ad income) be taxed at a higher rate? what’s a good strategy? thanks!

Jere answers:

To make it simple and headache free, first register your business name in your city/county. If it is proprietorship business, and you don’t employ any one, then you do not need tax id. You can use your social security number.

Launch your website. Open a bank account for your business. This way you can easily keep business expenses and income separate from your personal expenses and income.

Then with your form 1040 you will need to include schedule C. If you have income it will be added to your all other incomes and you will pay tax on the total income. Evidently, the extra income from your business will fall in your highest tax rate bracket.

In the beginning it may not be wise to go for incorporation, as it involves a lot of headache and compliance problems.

Once your business is established, then you can always go for incorporation.

How do I start an online business?

I would like to start selling wholesale body jewelry online as a side gig. I am currently a college student so making some extra cash would be nice. I have a distributor that I buy from but would like some advise on how to actually set up an online store as well as any steps I would need to take as far as taxes and business licenses go. Also how would I set up payments for credit card processing? Thanks in advance.

Jere answers:

You want to choose a name, when you do this you will first have to find out if any one else is using the name already, then create a website and all of that good stuff, you can either do it your self or have someone do it for you, you can also save a lot of headache and sell on e bay, after you show you are a serious seller you get perks and you do not have to worry about getting people to go to your site because everyone goes to e bay first to find stuff nowadays they take care of all the little things and they have dropped thier fees to hardly nothing, your payments will be secured through paypal if you want so you don’t get burned and you will get mad exposure, being a student you want this to be smooth , taxes are filed as a business owner and you get a lot of write offs, all of your expences are written off so that helps Good Luck

How do I get a tax ID in Florida for a online business?

I currently sell wallets and handbags on my website www.luxaccessories.net. Right now I pay taxes through my wholesaler, but I want to get my own tax ID and do them myself. I tried to register on irs.gov but it says halfway throught the form that I need my certificate number. I am not sure how to obtain one or get registered with the state since it is an online business. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Jere answers:

It is not different from a regular business, you can apply for one online.

Towards the bottom click on “register to collect and report taxes”

You also need an SS4 to get a Federal ID# search for SS4 or SS-4 or go here : http://www.comparepayroll.com/free_forms.html
