Jere answers:

Depending on wht the modem style is there are 2 types

residentral- which has a single connection type (arris or motorole surfboard) which will reqire a router type to connedct to the moem

or business classs(with an additional 4 port switch built in (smc broadband modems) that can connect up to 4 computers at the same time …

Now depending on the modem you have you now must decide how you are going to do this the one port only works with the router because you ip range is based on 1 computer i’ll speak on i p range in a moment

and the businerss class is based on the ip range of four or more computers (usually 6 at the most ) for the i p range for business

now i p range meand hopw many computers your modem is designed to work off of because they need ip addresses for the network to use

..i am a network technician let me tell you what i designed and why
i have a building with a businewss class modem ( refer to defs above for understanding) that meqans 4 computers are running… But if u have 20 then you need to expand the network so i took a crossover cable and a 24 port switch and added it to one of the ports now i can now support 20 computers .. For the entire building… Goodluck

Internet business?

If I start up my own selling business, how do you collect the money for the Items that you sell. By cheque? Credit card? etc. What is the best way to work it.

Jere answers:

If you’re going to sell on the Internet and have your own website, it is better to give your customers as many options as possible — credit card, Paypal, check, money order, etc. However, priority should be made in making sure that you can accept credit card payments.

To be able to accept credit cards, you need to have a merchant account, payment processing gateway, SSL certificate for encryption of orders and a shopping cart. The leading payment processing gateway, Verisign Payflow services (now Paypal Merchant) https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_payflow-gateway-pricing-outside costs as much as $59.95 per month for maximum of 1,000 transactions plus set up fee of $249.

The SSL digital certificate to ensure secured transaction can set you back anywhere from $199 for two years with Thawte or $695 for two years with Verisign.

You can opt to skip a payment processing gateway and process your orders manually. You need a merchant account plus a credit card payment processing terminal. Verifone Omni 3750, for example, costs anywhere from $398 to $650. Note though that this is a very inefficient way to process payments and will only work if you get very few sales per day. Plus order processing is not instantaneous (you may not be in your computer when the order arrives).

The easiest way, though not the cheapest way, would be to use all-in-one payment solutions. Paypal has a Website Payments Pro https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_wp-pro-overview-outside which combines merchant account plus gateway for $20 a month plus processing fee per transaction

William asks…

Poll: Internet Business?

Would you be interested in an internet business that:

1. That allowed you to work from home on your computer.

2. Raised money for non-profit organizations.

3. Created a steady stream of income for you.

4. Does not require you to cold contact anyone that you do not know.

Jere answers:

Sounds like we are like minded. The only way to do a business online is on the computer. Creating a business that is a solution to others needs will provide a steady income. Why should anyone do cold contacting when you can use the Internet for positioning. Many people are searching the web for solutions each day. Does your business provide a solution to the searches? Then you can be well positioned. Is there any other way to do a Internet business?

BEST WISHES!
