Your Questions About Internet Marketing Degree

Ken asks…

How useful is a Journalism degree these days?

Not necessarily to become a journalist but the skills that you learn from the degree in general. Furthermore what kind of jobs can come from it (that are in demand).
Thanks in advance!

Jere answers:

It’s great that you are following a career path that you are excited about, and yes, journalism is a bit sticky. With new media forms like the Internet affecting publications’ content and revenue stream, and the fact that media companies are shrinking their reporting/editorial staffs (and expecting more reporters to know how to produce multimedia pieces), the industry is in flux.

A starting salary for a new journalist who has had several internships and published pieces could be *around* $21k-29, and definitely more or less, depending on a size/location & your expertise level. So many job candidates with 4-year college and/or masters degrees in journalism apply to the limited number of available positions, and they are also competing with reporters who’ve been laid off.

Do prepare yourself for the possibility of freelancing while working a ‘day job’ or also using your degree skills to work for a few years in PR or marketing. To be frank, there’s an excellent possibility that, with a 2-year CC journalism degree, you may start out doing clerical work, and you might not even find any position at a publication. But try to blog! Many veteran and new journalists blog about news events—just remember to practice the same journalistic integrity that you would working under a publication.

I hope this wasn’t blunt, and good luck—you’ll find something!

PS: if you do choose a journalism program, a worthwhile one will teach you how to shoot and edit video, even if you don’t plan to focus on video.

Jere answers:

Communications is the degree that I have. I am in Marketing it is pretty fun. My sister is also a Communications major and she got into advertising. She has been all over the World to film commericals. Communications can also get you into radio broadcasting and production or television broadcasting and production. You can do Public Relations, you can do Human Resources. You can get into journalism, you can get into electronic media, ie internet stuff. You can be a copywriter or someone who writes commericials or magazine ads. You can get into media buying where you actually place ads for companies. Communications is a pretty broad degree. There are literally dozens of things you can do with it. I hope this helps. Take care and good luck.

What does it take to go into the Computer Science market?

What’s better for a person trying to focus on software engineering, a business degree or a computer science degree?

What about a Database Administrator? What does a Database Administrator need to take prior to becoming a Jr. DBA? AS, BS, Oracle classes?

What about a hacker?

What are some websites to learn how to black, grey and white hat hack?

Thank you.

Jere answers:

Hello Achilles,
First of all know your interest subjects, whether you like development or database administration. I think you are 12th students and then if you have given engineering entrance exam you can take admission to B.E or B.Tech courses where you can study maths, and some technical subjects. Computer science is 3 year degree course is normal B.Sc degree. There are many short term courses which you can do while pursuing your regular degree such as software testing, DBA courses, and programming languages (C, C++, C#, Java, .net) etc. And once you want to be hacker then you should be well versed and must be netizen who knows each n every basics of internet , computer field. To be a great hacker you have to be clever and must be able to code and crack coding of software which you wanna hack.

William asks…

What jobs can I get with a business management degree – what area should I specialize in?

My college like almost any other offers a major in business management for students to take. The school makes you have to choose an area of specialization which is like 18-21 credits worth. You have to choose either marketing, accounting, finance, or management.

What entry level jobs can I get with a business management degree and what should I specialize in? I was thinking just management but I’ve heard that its too general from some forums I read on the internet. What do you think?

Jere answers:

I’d recommend you lean towards the marketing side. Especially internet marketing.
Most companies today still do not have this down correctly and need the help because they
are being left in the dust by their competition.

My gf from Philippines will be in US in some time. I will inquire at a hospital to receive the proper information to have her become a nurse or nurses assistant. What is the process for her to become a nurse in a reputable hospital? She will have graduated from her college in the degree of Nursing. Will she have to start over all over to become a nurse or will her schooling there reserve credentials?
