Your Questions About The Real Biz

Daniel asks…

When you sign up to sell things on Amazon, does a real person actually call you?

I want to sell things on Amazon, but it says that you get a phone call when you sign up. Is this a real person or is it automated? I’m assuming they are just calling to verify the account, but do they ask anything specific? I know this may sound like a dumb question, but I’m a bit phone phobic. Thanks for the help!

James asks…

How did you get your first real estate listing?

Just want personal stories, tips etc. I am new to the biz and am curious.

Jere answers:

My very first listing was due to working my sphere of influence – spreading the word to those I already knew that I was now in the r.e. Business. After that, I would say that marketing to my farm with eye-catching mailers resulted in some listing appointments and then another listing. And when I really hit my stride, it was just through being active in Mommy groups…taking my son to playdates and hosting playdates at my home. The other moms came to trust me and started looking to me as their r.e. Agent even though I never pushed my business on them in anyway. I was networking without really even thinking about it. Once I figured out what was happening I dropped all my other marketing efforts and just focused on developing relationships with my mommy friends and landing clients with them and getting referrals from them.

Mary asks…

In San Antonio Texas are there any real estate companies that have classes for the real estate exam?

Or for TX what is the best online school where I can get my real estate license?

Jere answers:

Your best bet is probably to talk to the broker at whatever agency you want to work with. Most of them will be happy to help you, and it will give you some idea of how much help you’ll get from that agency.

Remember that the Real Estate biz is chock full of folks that thought it would be easy money. Regardless of which course you take, expect to go for at least six months with no income (but lots of expenses).

Most new agents do not make it through their first license period.

But, if you like working with people, aren’t afraid of hard work and long hours, and can deal with being an “independent contractor” (no benefits), then this job can be a lot of fun, and eventually you can make a good living at it.

I did find that the University of Texas at Arlington runs an on-line real estate course. You might want to check them out. Http://www.schoolestate.com/

Steven asks…

how much do I have to earn before taxes in home biz?

I do freelance work on the side of my real job, in Michigan. Is there a limit to how much I can earn before having to claim it as income.
I just started and I don’t think I will earn more than a couple thousand this year, next year I think I will earn a substantial amount though.

Jere answers:

Magic number is $600. If you don’t have one, call the IRS and get your FEIN even if you don’t plan to do this forever.

The reason is it will allow you to take some of the expenses you will have working freelance as business expenses on your taxes.

Carol asks…

What is the real story on the long term outlook on silver? I hear it is almost impossible to recycle.?

Does anyone know about the new uses for silver? Will the new uses replace the photo biz loss? How wide will it be used in new industries?

Jere answers:

I like silver long term. Silver is used in making batteries
