Linda asks…
How can I transition into a marketing job from event planning in a university setting?
I am desperately seeking a new career and after completing a marketing certificate at The Wharton School, I would really like to pursue something in the marketing field. My experience has been in higher education administration, working with students, and planning events for both students and alumni. I’m looking for advice on how to best market my skills, abilities and enthusiasm to try and break into the marketing world.

Jere answers:
I’d think it’s a definite asset because it required that you understand people, and having a background in something other than marketing means you’re better connected to a broader range of personalities and mentalities. So I think that’s an asset.
I found an article that has some suggestions that could help you out, especially in regards to getting additional training beyond your current certificate:
It will take determination and persistence, but it can be done. You will find that a start in marketing will normally put you in a position as a market research assistant, print buyer, general management trainee, or you can enter a program as a graduate trainee.
A few companies that offer Marketing Graduate Trainee programs are:
Mars
Mars doesn’t have a specific marketing training program for graduates.
They fun a cross-functional management development program, through which graduates have access to opportunities in marketing. Recruits to the program are typically given three to four assignments, the first of which may be related to their experience or studies. The remaining assignments will be in other areas, and one may be overseas. Their goal is to broaden trainees’ experiences.
Nestle
Nestle has recently changed its approach to hiring graduates. Nestle recruits in a similar fashion as to how they recruit other employee levels. Each department now recruits graduates throughout the year on an ‘as-required’ basis. Vacancies will be posted and advertised throughout the year.
Proctor & Gamble
Procter & Gamble’s graduate training program recruits graduates into one of eight career tracks, including consumer and market knowledge and marketing. Consumer and market knowledge involves sophisticated and proactive market research-based work to identify business opportunities, including new product development. The marketing function involves growing the value of brands within the P&G product range. Marketing trainees will learn about advertising, PR, consumer bonding, direct marketing and project management within their first two years. The applicants are selected according to application form, a problem-solving test, interview, and site visit, where they will meet prospective managers and colleagues.
If you decide that the graduate training program route is not for you; you can still break into the field of marketing by being persistent. You will need to be willing to take on an entry-level position in most marketing agencies and work your way up. If this isn’t a problem then it’s time to begin your first marketing assignment, which is marketing you using your resume.
I think the important thing to take away from the above is that you’re probably going to need to build experience by starting out at entry-level jobs. Ideally, based on your background you should look for entry-level jobs with companies that are targeting university students. Your experience working with students will make you stand-out when looking for that job. Try thinking about some of the businesses in your area that make products or have services that are geared towards students and finding out if they’re looking for any new marketing trainees.
Good luck!!

Mark asks…
What are some good ideas to help market a construction company?
I’m interviewing for a marketing position with a construction company. I have a few ideas for marketing, but I’ve never worked with a construction company before, the target audience is so different. Anyone have some ideas? I would be very very appreciative!! I’ve been researching all morning but curious to know more!!

Jere answers:
Depending on the company, lead generation likely will be the hottest topic in marketing. Branding may come second – depending on the size of the company, how established they are, and the person you’re interviewing’s thoughts on branding vs lead generation
For lead generation, there are many great sources for marketing a construction company. Here’s a few thoughts:
– Online – 3rd party lead providers. Company’s such as ServiceMagic, com, RenovationExperts.com, Contractor.com – provide performance-based “pay per lead” marketing services. These are a great source to get instant results, and only pay for the leads generated.
– Online – Pay Per Click advertising can be, by far, one of the best sources of advertising any construction company can do. You simply bid to advertise on words that relate to your business, and only pay each time a person clicks on an ad to go to your website. If your website converts the visitors into leads, it can be very cost effective.
– Online – Search Engine Optimization – ranking organically for the keywords related to your business can bring massive results. It’s a full-time gig and requires a bit of time to “build up steam and results”, but the payoff can be monstrous. It’s a good thing to include in the mid-to-long term plan, but expect a delay of 3-6 months before you see the big results from the efforts.
As you can tell, I’m a big advocate of online marketing for construction companies.
Offline, here’s some other sources that can work well for lead generation:
– newspaper ads
– Magazine advertisements
– yellow page ads
– trade shows/builder shows/fairs
– direct mail/coupon mailers
For the branding push, these typically work best:
– Radio
– Television
As a wrap-up, if the company deal mainly with the residential market, social media approaches are typically not my biggest recommendation. Think about it. When’s the last time you went onto FaceBook looking for someone to replace your siding? Additionally, since most construction companies are not a “residual”-based sale (where the customer buys multiple times), staying in front of existing customers from this approach doesn’t give much value.
Social media can be very valuable, however, for networking and connecting with professional contacts that you could partner with. For example, if engineers refer work to the company, you could connect with engineers on the social media sites, build report, and give yourself the opportunity to earn their referrals.
Hope this helps. If you like the answer, give it a thumbs up!

Robert asks…
what can you bring to a direct marketing and sales company? interview question?

Jere answers:

Prepare for a Marketing Job Interview
Marketing interviews are harder than other interviews because if you can’t sell yourself, then you won’t do a very good job selling the company’s products or services. But if you have any talent at marketing, you should be able to approach the interview as a sales pitch. Follow these steps.
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
Things You’ll Need
Portfolio
Resume
Thank you notes
1
Study the company intently. With the advent of the internet, there is no excuse for not knowing the company you are interviewing with thoroughly. Create a cheat sheet of important facts such as revenues, competitors, new product releases, good and bad press and annual report data. Mock up an organizational chart so you can begin to understand the management structure within the company.
2
Dress professionally. Invest in a good business suit, accessories and shoes. Women should dress modestly and should wear hosiery. Both men and women should have clean and styled hair as well as clean manicures. Do not try to stand out by wearing something outlandish or trendy.
3
Polish your resume, pointing out your practical experience as well as appropriate college classes. If you are light on practical experience, list class projects and volunteer work instead.
4
Gather your best work–either from college or at past jobs and create a professional portfolio. Choose your best writing samples, business plans, collateral materials and research projects.
5
Bring your professional references on a separate sheet of paper. Also collect current and old data that might be needed for an application. This includes former addresses and phone numbers, the addresses and phone numbers of past employers, your driver’s license number, past salaries, GPA, university addresses and contacts and personal references. You never know what you will be asked on an application form.
6
Prepare questions for the interview process. Remember that you are interviewing them just as they are interviewing you. You want to make sure it is right job for you. Ask all the questions you need to know to determine if the job would be a good fit for you.
7
Sell yourself. Be prepared to point out your best qualities. Give examples of how you solved problems or saved money at your last job. Offer real world examples instead of giving vague cliché answer to interview questions. Bring out samples of the work you have created and the positive effects it had on your last position.
8
Send a thank you note to the people you interviewed with. Collect their business cards during the interview and send a note promptly. Thank them for their time and their insight into the company. Reiterate your interest. This action alone will help you stand out from the pack.

Your Questions About Internet Business Ideas

James asks…

Jenny asks…
What graduate qualifications are most marketable in todays business environment?
Are people really getting wealthy through internet business or is this some kind of a sham to cheat people out of their life earnings?

Jere answers:
You are asking two questions. First, the graduate qualifications sought most are the MBA degree. Businesses are looking for MBA graduates who also have an undergraduate degree in a field related to their business. For example, hospitals may be interested in MBAs with a pharmacy, health care, or pre-med undergraduate degree. Construction companies may want MBAs with undergraduate degrees in engineering.
Another area where there is a strong need for graduate qualifications is engineering and sciences. We don’t graduate enough people in these fields.
For your second question, some people are getting wealthy in Internet businesses and they provide valuable services. Some Internet businesses are just attempts to get other people’s money in exchange for little or nothing in return. But this is true in areas not connected with the Internet. If you have a legitimate idea and can provide a good product or service at a fair price, you can have a successful business. Of course you have to know what you are doing and have to be adequately capitalized. Wealth and success does not come from nothing. You have to work hard at it.

Any one have any serious suggestions what business I could start?
I have access to an office, phone lines and the internet. But, I dont have any cash to invest in anything. Any good services I could provide? I was considering drop shipping. Would I need cash up front for this? I am a single mum and need to start making decent cash quick, not afraid of hard work. I have an excellent business idea, but not the cash to have it manufactured. Who could I look at selling this idea to? I have had it patented. Only serious suggestions please, I dont have time for time wasters. Thanks

Jere answers:
If you are thinking of setting up business with a low investment cost, I would suggest that you could startup an online business. With a properly setup system and correct web marketing strategies, you could easily start to earn passive income.
The process could be fully automated as the technology is there. And you could work at your flexible time.
There are a lot of online business model such as selling phyiscal or digital products, buying and selling domain names, affilitate marketing, auctions, paid newsletter or websites and many more.
You should also adopt a good marketing strategies. You could 1) buy traffic 2) steal traffic or 3) build traffic. All the techniques will allow you to get more visitor to visit your webpage and eventually buy the product or services from you. I am currently using 2)and 3) as they are cheap and some of them free.
To find out more about it, you could get to the below link and it will tell you exactly what are the steps to setup an successful online business regardless of your experience and background. It will also tell you what are those steps, the reason behind each step, how you could go about it and where to get the necessary resources free or at a very low cost.
Hope that you will find useful

Susan asks…
What is the difference between “balance” and “available balance”?
I’m using the Prosperity Bank online banking.
It shows my balance, but is shows the available balance as having $300 less than the balance.
I haven’t made any recent large transactions, and all of the transactions that I have made (I keep up with all of them) are documented on the website, so I don’t know why it shows the available balance as $300 less?

Jere answers:
Your “balance” is the balance at the end of the most recent business day, but the available balance reflects what is available to you after pending holds or authorizations for purchases, such as on a debit card.
A transaction can be documented on the website but may not have yet posted to your account.
Another possibility is that one or more checks you may have deposited is being held for collection.
Your available balance is the one you should go by, with one exception. This probably does not apply to you, since your available balance is $300 less than your “balance.” But, some banks offer overdraft protection and include the amount they allow you to overdraw your account in the “available” balance.

Ruth asks…
How long does it take a check to be processed after the receiving party deposits it?
I wrote a check, and they deposited it the same day. When should it appear in my online banking?

Jere answers:
Did they deposit it in the same bank?
Then it could take as little as a day.
Did they deposit it out of state?
It could take 5 business days
Did they deposit it in the same area?
It could take about 2 or 3 days…

Donald asks…
How does the Boss get to be “the Boss” without basic skills?
I’ve known a few executives in my day. They are usually more mature in age than the average age of the company. They also have a certain manner about them.
When I got out of college I had to be very proficient in various software tools as well as functional as writer. One of my CEO bosses didn’t even know how to use MS Word! If we wanted something done, he’d just ask someone who knew how to do it. His receptionist would bring him coffee everyday, but I doubt he knew how to turn on the computer, let alone do online banking or simple network troubleshooting.
How can you be the CEO of a company, and yet not have any of the basic skills of the staff working the company your run.
I’ve noticed many VPs, CEOs, and other executives are better at “smoozing” with clients and making high level presentations than they are at doing any “technical” stuff. How can you lead an organization and not possess at least the technical ability of the “average Joe” of your staff?

Jere answers:
There’s a different set of skills required at that level. It’s not necessary to be able to program a computer to be able to run a business that happens to have some programmers. (The person managing the programmers, however, should have at least basic programming skills so he understands the work they’re doing.)
The executives have to manage long-term planning, leadership development, personnel advancement, investment of capital, and interaction with high-level clients/investors. These are important functions that you don’t want to have to do, and they don’t require the skills of the people doing the basic functions of the business.
As for the inability to use Word, that’s not uncommon in people who came up in businesses that didn’t use it (fairly common 20 years ago, actually). If he never held a position that needed that skill, he never had to learn it. Now, at his current level, he has the ability to delegate to someone who has that skill, so he can focus on what’s important.
In essence, high-level management requires a different set of “basic skills” than your job.

I bet that guy could run circles around you with a slide rule.
CEO’s learn to manage change, not master it.
The skill sets you need to advance in business today are different than yesterday’s, and tomorrow’s will be different yet again. What you need is the ability to know what works best now, and how to access it.
The specifics of profit may change, but the underlying premise remains the same. That’s where experience comes in, and a cognition of how it happened last time. That’s why old guys remain prominent in industries that are technically light years beyond them.

Which internet management soft ware is best to use. What is best price to fix per hr.Any experienced person gives best suggestion will be great help for me.

Jere answers:
Hi,
I have been into internet business and marketing for almost 7 years now.
Probably I might help you out to solve your questions. So here are answers to your short questions…
>> I have set up internet business, yet to open, I know something about the business, want to know more.
Murtuza – If you want to start your own internet business working from home, you have to master these 4 simple steps…
Step 1 – Product and Market Research – Here you discover the right niche you want to get started with and develop a product of your own or decide to sell other peoples products on affiliate basis.
Step 2 – Website Design – You have to learn how to create sizzling websites with powerful copy.
Step 3 – Learn how to automate your website so that it runs on autopilot.
Step 4 – Learn how to drive traffic to your website.
If you master the above 4 steps you can create unlimited internet businesses of your own.
>> What are the rules and regulations as per law of UAE. Which official web site to visit to know more.
Murtuza – As I am from India it is difficult to know rules of UAE, a CA might help you out. However if you are just starting out just focus on putting up a website, don’t go into legalities as of now. Once you start making some money you can then take care of legal stuff.
>> How to increase customer inflow , what scheme is better way for the daily collections.
Murtuza – Once your site is up there are many ways to drive customers to your site, some of them include…
1. Writing and submitting articles.
2. Create a content rich SEO site.
3. Forum Marketing.
4. Web 2.0 and Forums.
>> Which internet management soft ware is best to use. What is best price to fix per hr.
Murtuza – To automate my entire internet business operation I personally use UMC service which costs only $19 per month. That’s it. However I provide technical support in getting started with it, if you wish let me know.
Hope this post helps you in gettings started.

Your Questions About How To Do Business Online

Ruth asks…

Thank.

Jere answers:

William asks…
How can i start my own business and what can i do do advertised it on the web. Because I need a job fast?
I am seeking a job or a career but I dont have no experience. What can I do to start making money and how can I promote or advertise on the web. How can I start making my own business online and what do i do. Please help me I am in need of a job or can i start working for someone else who is hiring.

Jere answers:
First of all you need to decide what kind of business you want to do/have before you can even think about getting it on the web. Are you skilled in anything? What are your interests and/or hobbies? Can you think of anyway of making money with these? Then after you come up with an idea, based on these interests or skills that you already have, you need to research them; see if there is a need for this type of business in your area, or if there are too many of these types of businesses in your area. Too many means you may not make enough money at it, not enough means either there is a need that’s not being filled, or it means that no one has seen the need for this, or it has already been tried and didn’t work. Now it’s up to you decide which one of these it could be. Then if you think you have an idea that could work, you need to make a business plan, because most businesses that do not have one of these prepared do not make it. One place you could start, before or after deciding what you are interested in, is to check the yellow pages to see what is already offered, or needs to be offered. Make advertising on the web one of your last concerns, because you can’t advertise if you don’t know what it is that you are advertising. Only you can decide if you want to start your own business, or if you should go to work for someone else. But if you decide to start your own business, I would say that you need to put AT LEAST 8 hours a day, just like you would if you had gotten a regular job, into it, for the planning, implimentation, and so forth. Actually, if you need cash fast your going to have to put alot more time into this than 8 hours a day or you’ll never get started. And if you need the money NOW, or even yesterday, go get a real job, but put every minute into planning your business, after your work day is over, that you possibly can, or it will all just be a dream that doesn’t come true. A good way to do it is to make a time plan, then break it up into dates/deadlines. Like, I will decide what business ideas I like on Monday. I will narrow it down on Tuesday. I will make the final choice on Wednesday and began to draw up a business plan. Or I will make a bus. Plan for both, and then choose the one that would be best. Etc.etc. Good luck with this, have fun!

Has anyone have any experiences on opt-in email marketing? How much (in percentage) do you think it help on repeat businesses?

I can’t give you percentages, but I can tell you that it helps. About a year ago, I purchased a Flip Cam from Best Buy on their website. Before I had even received the camera, they had sent me an email containing related products. I would up purchasing a case and a tripod for it. Now, almost a full year after the purchase, I just received another email from them. This one, informing me that the manufacturer’s warranty was about to expire. They gave me the option of purchasing an extended protection plan.
For your used video game store, you could use a similar concept. Find out the types of games and systems your subscribers like. Inform them on similar games or upcoming releases. You can even do the warranty thing with the game systems. The possibilities are endless, and customers that become engaged with your email campaigns are sure to be repeat customers.

Don’t use email marketing..alot of people hate getting spam. Instead why don’t you work on getting your website high in the search engines and try using sponsored links e.g. On google so that people will see you site highlighted when they use certain search words?

Email Marketing Advise?
Hi to all
I am looking at starting some sort of email marketing to advertise my new business.
I am looking for any recommendations or advise any one could give.
This industry seems to be open for abuse, is there any scams I should look out for.
Thanks

Jere answers:
Email is a very powerful marketing tool. In spite of spammers abusing the medium, email can still be used and is still valued by users for timely, rich and enticing information and advertisements.
Email marketing (on the Internet) is popular with companies for several reasons:
1) An exact return on investment can be tracked (“track to basket”) and has proven to be high when done properly. Email marketing is often reported as second only to search marketing as the most effective online marketing tactic.
2) Advertisers can reach substantial numbers of email subscribers who have opted in (i.e., consented) to receive email communications on subjects of interest to them.
3) Over half of Internet users check or send email on a typical day.
4) Email is popular with digital marketers, rising an estimated 15% in 2009 to £292m in the UK.

Your Questions About Direct Marketing News

Chris asks…
Quality news stations?
What’s the best news channel or show to watch for quality stories and important headlines? I don’t care if it is biased, as long as they give enough coverage rather than superficial news with distracting visuals.

Jere answers:
CNN is the best for giving unbiased news most of the time. With such people as Anderson Cooper and Dr. Sanjay Gupta reporting we are getting the best news reporters in the world and they don’t just sit in their news offices, they go to the sites and give hands on and direct live reporting. Anderson Cooper and Dr. Sanjay Gupta were in Haiti within the past few days and may still be there trying to get the Haitian government to release the medical supplies and food from the warehouses, some of which are only five miles from where the people are who need the supplies and food. What is happening is that the relief agencies stored the food in the warehouses to be distributed later to the Haitian people and the politicians are charging the relief agencies for both storage fees and for releasing the supplies and food and some of the relief agencies don’t have the extra thousand or more to pay to get the supplies and food released. What is really happening is that the politicians in charge of storing the supplies and food have keys to the warehouses and they take supplies and food for themselves, their family, friends, and also sell some of it on the black market at inflated prices as a way to get extra money for themselves. The president of Haiti knows this is happening and he isn’t doing anything about it yet and won’t until pressure from other countries and the United Nations Relief effort is so intense that he will have no choice but order the supplies and food be released. This is the type of news stations that are needed as they serve the purpose by “keeping them honest”, which is the motto of CNN, to keep them honest, and CNN does so by seeking out and asking the pointed and direct questions people in general want answers to and they are very successful at changing the status quo. Let’s not forget the Dr. Sanjay Gupta is a doctor first and a newscaster second as those who watched CNN learned when they saw him both reporting the news and operating on patients at the same time immediately after the earthquake. I have never seen such outstanding journalism and dedication as that exhibited by Dr. Sanjay Gupta and Anderson Cooper. These two individuals are both heroes in my book as they both saved countless lives while they were in Haiti and they are still doing so. These two outstanding human beings deserve the Nobel Peace Prize for their dedication and devotion to helping the people of Haiti and if it were in my power to nominate them I would do so. I don’t think you will find a news station as good as CNN anywhere in the world.

Richard asks…
reports about financial markets?
If you observe news reports about financial markets for some time, you will notice that investors pay tremendous amount of attention to economic to economic data releases from the government. Why do you think that this is the case? What are investors concerned about? What would happened in financial markets if investors thought that there was a much higher probability than before that a recession would occur soon?

Jere answers:
Macroeconomic data like the unemployment rate and GDP have a direct affect on economic growth and activity, and the markets. If investors thought there was risk of another recession they most likely put money into bonds, treasuries and high rated corporate bonds. Bond yields would fall, bond prices would rise and and stock prices would fall. Sort of like whats been happening recently.

Helen asks…
News on cybernetic implants?
So I’m planning on going into the forces, and that got me thinking about what if I lose a limb? What sort of technology will be available by say 2020-2030, is it possible that we can create cyborg limbs and optics as opposed to tradition prosthetics? Also what is the current situation on cybernetic limbs, are they in progress?

Jere answers:
There is no doubt prosthetics will be markedly improved with each passing decade. By 2020 don’t expect market available neuro-prosthetics “cyborg limbs”.
Even 2030 is a far cry from having prosthetic limbs that are innervated by our brains with any agility, dexterity that resembles a human limb.
However, DARPA has been heavily funding this research — although with little success. The most success have been from smaller funded research teams.
The biggest hurdle is integrating our nerves at the amputation site into a prosthetic that also has the capability to interpret ten’s to hundreds of thousands of nerve impulses for different specific actions/movements, sensations (tactile, prociceptive, heat/cold, etc.).
After an amputation our peripheral nerves can no longer transmit or receive nerve impulses. The barrier has been to attempt to fuse them into robotic limbs to create a direct neural-prosthetic device/interface.
A few teams of scientists have been taking different approaches with some initial success. Some of the initial reports show that these artificial limbs would be able to move with agility, feel hot/cold, and even subtle touch (tactile).
One of the most promising of these scientists is a group that has developed a scaffold that is an artificial structure that can support tissue growth — essentially merging severed nerves with these prosthetic limbs.
The difference in this particular result and others — is that many researchers have made attempts to integrate nerves and prosthetics, but they don’t use techniology that is compatible with nerve fibers. Nerve fibers are tightly bundled and flexible, as such nerves need to grow and have room to move around within a space. Most attempts confine them in a stiff interface (space).
The new material which comprises this scaffold interface is flexible and fluid AND highly conductive as nerves can be thought of as an electrical circuit.. The higher the conductiveness the easier it is to pass the low voltage current our bodies use constantly in fractions of seconds to operate our limbs. Nerve signals are highly localized and very subtle, thus an effective neural-prosthetic interface would need to transmit thousands of different signals per SECOND to come close mimicking a human limb, and it’s inherent relationship to the human brain and body.
Thus this new technology is from the development of biocompatible polymers which mimic nerve tissue. This porous material allows nerves to be extended through it and lined with electrodes to again enhance conductivity.
However, this has only been utilized in rodents (rats) so far.. And the surgical results of this scaffolding has been exciting — shortly after being implanted to severed leg nerves of rats the rats own nerve fibers began to grow through the scaffold and fuse back together. This is a HUGE advance. Further the synthetic material wasn’t rejected whatsoever (another big problem surmounted as the body’s immune system rejects all foreign material,.. Thus creating a scaffold material that the body doesn’t recognize as ‘foreign’ is remarkable.
So, thus far we are focusing on the integration of the fusion of nerve fibers after they have been long severed.. This appears to be working in rats. However, we still have to figure out how to integrate the prosthetic to take individual inputs from thousands of nerves and there signals every fraction of a second to be recognizable commands that are fluid and occur with thought (the brain). So nerve mapping for function, tactile sensation, hot/cold, prociceptive sensation (this is the a sensation most people don’t realize we have.. Our limbs constantly are giving feedback to our brain about their relative dynamic position , load, etc so we maintain our proper posture/balance while still, walking, running and more eccentric activities.
Current prototypes have impressive abilities but none of them are directly interfaced with our nervous system which is the end result with a successful cybernetic/neural prosthetic limb. DARPA is the pentagons most advanced research team, highly funded, and they still haven’t been able to create a prototype interface that would be sensitive enough or had a lifespan of more than a few months. As such DARPA has reached out to educational research groups, and private entities that would solve these problems.
An example of another prototype developed by Johns Hopkins uses brain implanted micro-arrays to transmit cues to an artificial limb. Impressive but not good enough — we need to use the brains existing system of function and adapt the prosthetic to our existing function, not create a ‘new brain’ for each implant.

Mary asks…
Fair Use? Copyright? Can I post a news segment/story that highlights my company’s product on youtube?
If a TV news company, such as fox or nbc, does a tv news story on my company and product, can I record and post the story on youtube? Would this be “fair use”? Can they claim copyright infringement?

Jere answers:
Posting a news segment on your company might be tantamount to commercial use, in that it is some form of marketing. Not sure it will withstand the test for fair use.
In any case, many news companies specifically disallow reproducing their content without their permission. This would include posting on Youtube.
You should obtain permission to broadcast the story on Youtube. It may be easier than you think to get permission. For example, Fox News.com gives a contact email for requesting permissions:
“Requests for permission to reproduce or distribute materials found on the Site can be made by contacting FOX News in writing at: Legal Department, Fox News Network, L.L.C., 1211 Avenue of the Americas, New York, New York 10036, or by emailing ldepartment@foxnews.com, Subject: Content Request.” Source: http://www.foxnews.com/about/terms-of-use/
While the above contact is for the fox website content, they may be able to direct you to the relevant Fox TV news department you need.
Find out what NBC news may require. NBC Universal terms are found at http://www.nbcuni.com/terms/

Your Questions About Internet Marketing Company

Sharon asks…
what is a fair way to set up a small sales company selling referrals over the internet?
My friend and I have an opportunity to generate leads (sales referrals) for an existing brick and mortar business. The company has a successful affiliate and direct sales program that pays $100 per referred sale.
They currently have no Internet representation. My partner and I plan to generate sales from Internet marketing only – no traditional sales.
What is the best way to legally set up the business to protect our interests as a company and my interests personally?

Jere answers:
When you say “protect our interests as a company,” do you mean the company you are referring people to or the one you plan to form with your friend?
It really depends if you are employees of the brick and mortar business. If you aren’t, you could set up a limited liability company (LLC) and have the brick and mortar business pay your company (the LLC) for the referrals. You and your partner would then file the appropriate tax forms for your partnership.

Charles asks…
Can I make a career in Internet Marketing?
With today’s internet community is there still room for honest, reputable coaches to grow a clientele in the internet marketing arena?

Jere answers:
The answer to your question is yes. I own a 2 million dollar Internet marketing company. I’ve owned this business for 21 years so obviously we didn’t start as an Internet marketing company; we started as a graphics and communication service. The formula is simple, but the execution calls for patience and vision:
If you can help just one business client successfully market their company and product on the Internet, all you have to do is take that story to somebody else that HE KNOWS, and ask them if they’d like to hear how you helped the first guy. Nobody cares about a brag story from your mouth, but they do care about the other guy’s story who you helped.
There will always be room in every consulting industry for another player who has a track record and integrity. Stop reading the news about how bad everything is. People still have to eat and drive and buy clothes and have babies. The stupid media would have us think everybody’s going to stop eating. I didn’t say people aren’t cutting back. But have you ever noticed that regardless of the economy, there are always the exact same amount of people needing services as people providing them? Anyway I’m getting off track. Just approach your business friends with a proposal where they get more out of it than you do, until you get that first success story, you need to give your services for less than they’re worth, then you can flip that equation over later.

William asks…
What is a quality web site design company in Rhode Island?
I need to create a website for my hotel and restaurant, but I don”t want to use a big agency. I’m located in Newport, Rhode Island, and am looking for a local company to help me create a site. They would probably also need to help me with internet marketing — stuff I know nothing about.

Jere answers:
I’m a retailer in Providence and I’ve worked with a small company called Pirata Media in Bristol, RI. They gave me a lot of time and attention, and didn’t use any smoke and mirrors, like some big web companies do.
They know what they’re talking about too! They helped me with some video production I needed, as well as some pay-per-click marketing and search engine optimization (which I’ll admit I knew nothing about either).
Overall, a great company with professional, high quality work for an extremely reasonable price. Also friendly, and easy to work with. I highly recommend them.
This is their site: http://www.piratamedia.com
Good luck!

Your Questions About Business Online Degree Programs

Mandy asks…
Business Administration Degree Online?
Does anybody have experience earning a degree online? I currently work full time and the only way i can go back to school is by doing it online. What should i expect? What are online classes like?
(I’m going to register at a “real” community college)

Jere answers:
Hi there,
I work with a few colleges that offer Business Administration degrees online
As far as the programs we offer, lectures are accessible 24/7. Lectures are audio and visual lectures. It is nice b/c you can pause, rewind, or fast forward your lecture.
You would typically have a due date for assignments – most of the time the assignments are due on the weekend by midnight. You would have access to completing the assignments before the due date, which would free you up for the rest of the week or you could get a head start on next weeks assignments.
We normally have students complete 1) weekly textbook readings 2) reading discussions 3) a test at the end of the week. This also varies from class subject.
We also offer students assistance from the student services department – they check in with you weekly to make sure everything is going well with the online courses.
Online classes are a bit more accelerated than ground classes. Those who are independent learners would do well and succeed in an online environment.

Michael asks…
Online Degree Program?
I am about to graduate from Axia College of the University of Phoenix with an AA in business. I am going to continue to get my BA, but I am concerned with having the UoP name behind me. I want a better school name on my resume. I have been searching for a school that has distance learning programs offered exclusively online, but the only ones that seem to do that, for business, are no-name schools. Is my only option to continue with a school that I am not so proud of? Granted a degree from a no-name school is better than no degree at all, but I want to make the most out of this. Can anyone suggest an undergrad business school or a web link that has a list of ranked online business schools? I have done countless searches for this with no meaningful results.
I have a 3.79 GPA with UoP.
I need online because I am employed full time. I live in Jacksonville, FL and I am not happy with the local choices.

Jere answers:
There are tons of online programs. I personally attended traditional and online-only schools, and I have taught for various online schools and traditional schools over the last five years. All are accredited and solid programs. Schools tend to vary in price, so we could say online schools are more expensive, but that is relative. Of course they are more expensive than a community college, but less expensive than Harvard. The price range varies.
The key is to find a program that is fully accredited. Is it worth it? YES. My career has boomed since my MBA at nearly 5 years ago. I am close to finishing my PhD through distance education, and I am at the job that I want. I know I wouldn’t be here without the education. If you are looking at work in the U.S., then you need a school that is accredited and recognized by the Dept of Ed. I can give more info on that later.
You should market yourself and not the degree or university. There are many traditional universities offering degrees that can be earned through online methods. Distance Learning Alliance has a list of these traditional online schools. Look at that if you are truly concerned with the name of the school. Good luck on your search!

Helen asks…
online degrees?
does anyone have any info on how these degrees are being received? as in, do employers give them as much creedence as those from campus-based programs? I’m considering either a degree in education or communications, and wondering how an online degree will stack up against the requirement with so many jobs I look at wanting a degree in journalism

Jere answers:
Recent academic research tells us that it is not online vs traditional but instead all about the reputation of the college awarding the degree. Online coursework is nothing unusual these days, almost everyone teaches online and at many you can complete all of the courses in a degree online.
The question employers ask is whether the school is accredited (and by who) and what’s the reputation of that college.
Education degrees online are plenty. They are second only to business majors. Communication and journalism isn’t as common but is available.
You want to explore all of your options and not simply those “as seen on TV” programs or the paid ads on your Google search. Look for programs like these:
UMass http://www.umassonline.net/Home.html
Florida State http://learningforlife.fsu.edu/online/
Oregon State http://ecampus.oregonstate.edu/
SUNY – http://www.oswego.edu/academics/continuing/index.html
Montana State http://www.msubonline.org/
Maybe even the State U in your own state.
Remember though – journalism gigs want to see some actual journalism experience in addition to the degree. You have to get both. Offer to do some PR/News Release writing for some non-profits in your area to get your foot in the door and get some print credits you can show off.

Sandra asks…
Online degrees?
Okay well i want to get a degree for either Vet or Business management. I know they are two different catagories but i havnt decided which one. I graduated from high school 2 years ago and i feel like its time to go to school… i had too much going on to go to college after i graduated. Im currently an assistant manager at Dominos and i dont wanna work there the rest of my life. Im looking to do my degree online… being that im full time at work and just moved to oklahoma city. What are some good accredited school for both choices… and that have financial aid. And also this may be a stupid question but if i choose to do b. management to i get my associates then work up from there?

Jere answers:
Take a look at Ashford University. This is the school I have chosen and I love it! Also, you could definitely achieve your Associates first if you would like. An Associates is mostly your General Education classes which would be the first part of your Bachelor’s degree program anyway.

Daniel asks…
Online Degrees?
I don’t fully understand this whole thing. I’m deciding to go back to school and it’s convenient to do it online. But my question is this, if I decided to get my Associate of Science in Psychology degree what would I end up being? I mean I won’t be a doctor right?? So, what kind of jobs would I be able to get?? Would I be a psychologist or a counselor?? I don’t understand this whole thing? Help me if you understand this please! Thanks!

Jere answers:
Here’s the breakdown on the degrees:
Associates – (2 years (times are traditional)
It is a degree generally awarded by community colleges and junior colleges. In bachelor and above granting universities it is given upon completion of credit equivalent to the first two years in a four-year college or university.
It basically, a little better than a high school diploma. For psychology specifically, you won’t be able to do much. I have a BS in Psychology and I was able to work at a counseling organization, but not counsel. Since then, I’ve moved on to my MBA and PhD in business. That’s another story.
Bachelors – (2 more years)
It is an undergraduate academic degree awarded for a specific course or major. This is the traditional college education. If you have a Bachelors, you can say you graduated college. Personally, I can’t stand it when someone says they have graduated with an Associates (it’s just half way).
With a BA or BS in Psychology, you may be able to assist in a little more hands a person who counsels. You still need more education to be giving people advice on their personal lives. I didn’t want such responsibility, so I decided to advise people on their business instead.
Masters – (2 more years)
It is an academic degree awarded for completion of a postgraduate (or graduate) credit courses dealing with a specific and detailed subject. Depending on the career field, this is a necessity. It also separates you most cases from those with a Bachelors degree; and if you can do it in a few more years, why not. A Bachelors alone is becoming not enough in many fields.
You usually work on your Masters after starting your job related to your degree. In many states, you can counsel with a Masters, but generally under supervision during certain number of years and you usually have to have a state certification.
Doctorate – (3 more years)
A doctoral degree is granted at the completion of extensive academic work in a particular field of study. There are three types of doctorates: research/terminal, (first) professional, and honorary. The PhD is a research intensive program, while other doctorates focus on the topic without as much research methodology involved such as the EdD for Education, DBA for Business, and PsyD for Psychology.
This is the terminal degree, basically the last one because as I say jokingly, if I go for another one, my wife will terminate me. Really, it is the highest level of education. With a doctorate in psychology then you will be able to counsel on your own.
Other – (vary)
There are state and national certificates to earn in many fields as well as Continuing Education Credits to ensure that you maintain updated in the new field information. There are also very specific topic oriented Graduate Certificates that you should earn in other to show your counseling specification and specialty.
You should first of all, review your goals, personal and professional. Make sure that the school that you are going to offers the programs that match your goals. Do not settle. There are many programs that are similar, but you have to make the ultimate decision. Do not let be based on finances and length of program, but the fact that when you are finished or near finished you will be able to assume your proper place in the career field sought.
I hope this has broken down the educational degree system a little for you. You should market yourself and not the degree or university. There are many traditional universities offering degrees that can be earned through online methods. Look at that if you are truly concerned with the name of the school. Good luck on your search!

Robert asks…
Is Ubuntu proof that capitalism is the best system?
I am not saying that Ubuntu is successful, but Ubuntu is the most successful of all of the Linux distributions. Ubuntu clearly is trying to move away from the typical anarchist ideology adopted by almost all Linux distros. The more Ubuntu moves toward capitalism the more successful Ubuntu becomes.
Is Ubuntu clear proof that capitalism works and anarchy leads to failure, as evident by almost all other Linux distributions? If Ubuntu wants to succeed in the desktop market, why don’t they completely adopt a capitalistic business model?

Jere answers:
Ubuntu Linux. They are very poor indeed their applications will close without warning.
The operating system itself works fairly well. But they will never have software for speech recognition. Neither will they succeeded an applications improvements. The only good that I can find Internet surfing.

Donald asks…
How do i get into the modeling business?
Well I’m 15 yr old female and I
want to become a gothic/punk rocker
model, only i don’t know where to begin.
I don’t know what to do where to go
what should i do?

Jere answers:
Id see an agent… A GOOD agent not some pervert alleyway agent. Ask around and look on the internet. Send some emails. Depending on where you live. I dont honestly think the gothic thing is they way to go if you want to be a model. And I dont even know if you are serious but good luck too you. Remember its a crap industry.

Sandra asks…
What is the biggest model train company in the United States?
I want to know if there is a store where you can go that is the biggest model train company in the United States, where you can buy all the different-sized model trains, like O scale, HO scale, and N scale and stuff like that, and as well as a large selection of locomotives, diesels, and cabooses and stuff like that, as well as garden railroads and quarry railroads and junction railroads. Does anyone know where to go to buy them? Anywhere in the United States, is there the biggest train store?

Jere answers:
(“Junction railroads”? What are they?)
I’m not aware of any “model railroading supermarkets,” as the hobby, by its very nature, has FEW “big guns.”
William K. Walthers (est. 1932) is the largest overall, between being a distributor, manufacturer and importer. They do not sell directly to consumers, but through an affiliate business set up for that purpose. It used to be “Terminal Hobby Shop,” but has since been renamed.
Caboose Hobbies in Denver, Colorado, has been around a long time, is makes its home in a former grocery store. In addition to being a retail operation, they also sell via mail order and the internet.
There are also various train meets around the country at different times, where a variety of dealers get together to sell all manner of train-related stuff; the Greenberg shows come to mind. Another big one is the Great Scale Model Train Show held several times a year in Timonium, Maryland. (All these train shows, whether traveling or not, charge a modest admission fee for entry.)

Donna asks…
I am going to start an Concierge Business?
I am starting an Concierge Business and I have an few questions fell free to answer them.
1) What kind of services would you like to see?
2) What kind of price point would you pay?
3) What would you recomend as an advertisement media?
4) What sources of infomation that you would find usefull to my line of work.

Jere answers:
Starting a concierge service is a great way to become your own boss and take command of your financial future. A growing number of people believe that self-employment is part of the American Dream and offers the best job security a person can hope for in these uncertain times. Therefore, while not for everyone, a concierge service can be a fun and profitable way to make a living as the rest of us slave away in offices doing the weekly grind. Here is some useful information for anyone thinking about starting a concierge service and living the American Dream.
Estimated start-up costs and pricing guidelines:
Actually, most of us already have almost everything we need to start a concierge service. On the list of essential equipment is: cell phone, computer (preferably a laptop), fax machine, printer, and perhaps a color copier. All told, you might be out $2000 if you had to buy everything from scratch.
The amount you charge really depends on your time investment and the services you are providing. A lot of concierge services charge a monthly membership fee where a person is allotted a specified number of errands. Others charge by the hour while some by the errand. Generally speaking, starting a concierge service will net you any where from $24-125 per hour.
Recommended experience, skills, and training:
Starting a concierge service certainly does not require any college degree but it wouldn’t hurt. A background in sales is probably best for anyone serious about succeeding with a concierge service. Since your entire professional life revolves around making good contacts and selling yourself and your services on a daily basis, a sales background comes in very handy. Any training involving general business and sales or marketing is also valuable.
Marketing tips:
Any successful concierge service will have to effectively network and find the best deals on the products or services their clients are wanting. Targeting airports and hotels where large numbers of strangers enter your town every day are great places to concentrate marketing efforts as they are filled with people in need of services in your area. A company website is another great idea as your target market will most likely consist of white collar people who are Internet savvy. Be sure to have your content list your location consistently so that you come up in searches performed on your area.
Financing sources:
Banks tend to view a concierge service as a high risk business due to its unpredictable nature. There just are no reliable business models to use and they depend upon the charisma and determination of the owner in order to succeed. Thus, financing options are limited to friends and family. But, fortunately the start-up and operational costs are relatively low so financing should not be too great of an obstacle for most.
Income Potential:
Starting a concierge service may be a fairly large risk in the eyes of a bank, but it has above average income potential for those with the determination to make it work. On average, a personal concierge makes $40,000 to $60,000 per year. But, many concierges make extra money from stores and contractors who pay them a commission for sending business their way. It is not uncommon for a personal concierge to charge annual membership fees of $1000-1500 to an individual and average $5,000 in annual dues from corporate clients.
Starting a Concierge Service may just be the escape from the rat race that you have been looking for. With low start-up costs and above average income potential, the prospect of getting paid good money to run errands never looked so good. If you are ready to start living your American Dream, then think about Starting a Concierge Service today and begin living that dream!
I recommended you Concierge Services by Conciant ( http://www.conciant.com ).This site will give you more info.

Where is a good site that can help me. I’m familiar with some internet marketing but I really need a Internet Home Business Strategy. Where can I go. I think creating a strategy first is what I need to do to run a success home based business.

Jere answers:
The most relevant thing you need to know, is what NOT to do.
The main obstacle in your way is not lack of information, on the contrary.
YOUR MAIN OBSTACLE IS INFORMATION OVERLOAD.
To over come it you should take a week or too to define what NICHE of internet marketing
you want your Internet Home Business to be in !
You can create and sell information products
you can be an affiliate marketer
you can practice in domain trading
you can learn seo and do it
and many many more …
(you can do a google search on each of the topics, or look after them
in vikipedia for no b.s strait unswears.
What ever you do, do it with caution, and (try) not be lead by HYPES.
So before you create a strategy, you should FIND YOUR NICHE in internet marketing.
And it depends on your interests and skills,
which there is one person that knows about them the best :
YOU.

What would get you to hire a particular Advertising Agency?
I work at an ad agency, and am trying to come up with a creative commercial we can air on TV to get people to use our agency for their small businesses’ integrated marketing strategies (we are full service — everything from ideas/creative, to production and post, to internet advertising, google search, web building, media buying, placement, and strategy, and everything in between).

i hope you will get some idea at there…
Good luck…

Linda asks…
what marketing strategy are controversial to talk about in a research paper?
i’m writing a 10 page paper on marketing strategies but after doing a little research i feel like my topic is weak… i first wanted to compare and contrast internet and television marketing and conclude which is better, but now i feel like they are both similar and not much to talk about….
can anyone help me figure out something more CONTROVERSIAL? anything to do with marketing a product. thanks!

Jere answers:
Research guerrilla marketing. In many cases it flirts with the ethical boundaries of marketing. You could pick several guerrilla campaigns and go from there. A couple campaigns I would look up are:
Reverse graffiti, and English guy that goes by the name of “Moose” has done work for Green Works cleaners and Smirnoff. Now he is in some hot water for “graffiti”
Aqua Team Hunger Force movie promotions in Boston ended in a 2 million dollar fine being paid because someone thought the lightbrites they where hanging were bombs.
Or you could go with the old sex in advertising debate.
Hope this helps

Steven asks…
Can I use PayPal in my online business to make it a legal company?
Hi,
I am starting a online business and I want to know what are the legal procedures to make it legal, I mean, when people go there to advertise whatever they want and pay a certain amount of money per month to advertise using PayPal to me, I need to make it legal.
And if that works with PayPal, that means I can also use Google Checkout and Yahoo! Wallet, isn’t?
What can I do to make my online business legal? What are the procedures?
I live in Alberta, Canada. Please help me with suggestions and tips. Thanks!

Jere answers:
Ah, well, I dont know what the procedures in Canada are, but you have to at least register yourself as a sole proprietor in a small business, $45 fee, and a name search – usually you can get away with a preliminary search for $10, or you may need to do the full search for $40 or so. Go here and select your region for full information:
http://www.bdc-canada.com/BDC/services/business_reg_main.htm
Here in the US you need at the very least a Federal TAX ID number from the IRS. You can back that up with a fictictious name purchase from the state, and be ready to go using any made up name for your business. If you want to buy things tax free for resale, then you need to have a state issued resale certificate and use that to open an actual company bank account.

Richard asks…
I am trying to start an online retail business. What are a few tips on getting started?
Do I have to have a business license? Do I have to have a tax permit? What is a good website to create your own online business?

Jere answers:
It will depend on what you are selling but all businesses need to have license. Yes taxes will need to be paid. I started an online business that I show others how to do you can email me if you want to know more about it. If you have a product already a good place to start is with the domain name you wish to have look it up like here on yahoo

Laura asks…
How would I go about starting a online business?
I would like to start a online business selling a variety of sex toys and other things of that nature. I would also like to do passion parties. I have a lot of things that I want to try and sell but I don’t know how to go about finding a distributor or a supplier I guess. I would I like to sell books, novelties, toys, and anything else I can think of. Any tips on how to go about this?

Jere answers:
Try El Dorado (http://www.eldorado.net/) they distribute all of the things you mentioned. I would be careful on trying to do too much at once. I would either focus on the on line business or the home parties, but not both, at least not right away.
Best of luck!

Helen asks…
Who are good online merchant account providers?
I am planning to start an online business (e-commerce) and I need to accept credit cards online. it is really hard to get a merchant account from banks as they have many requirements. Not good for start-up businesses like mine.
Can you please suggest a good online merchant account provider for an online business?

Jere answers:
You need to look for various factors before selecting a merchant account provider for e-commerce business. Transaction cost is the main thing. Also check for their hidden costs and customer support capabilities.
The other thing you need to look at is what type of goods you are going to sell online. Some businesses are categorized as “high risk merchants” and it will be hard to get a merchant account provider for high risk businesses.
I suggest you to visit http://www.merchant-account-comparison.org/online-merchant-account and read the details. It has useful tips and recommendations for online merchant account service providers.

Your Questions About Email Marketing Software

Richard asks…
What is the best free antivirus software?
I would like to know which of the following is the best free antivirus software. Which has the best score for finding a destroying viruses? Which has the most to protect my computer? Or any other opinions.
AVG
Avast home edition
Avira personl

Jere answers:
Well for starters, let’s cover the freeware versions of antivirus available and cover why they often fall short.
The freeware version of AVG (as opposed to the upgraded commercial version) covers the bare necessities of security, with a simple, straightforward graphical user interface (GUI) nearly anyone can use. However, it does have a relatively low detection rate of viruses (about 81%, but who’s keeping score?) and a rate of false positives that is higher than most, meaning it will detect a virus when there is none. The free copy also does not include adware or spyware removal and support for the product is limited. While it does have safe-mode support, a nice perk for a freeware AV, it has little rootkit detection, no registry scans, no firewall, and has recently acquired a larger resource-footprint with the addition of email scanners, a browser toolbar, and a link-scanner. With the spotty protection and gaining resource requirements, AVG is becoming less useful as the “lightweight” alternative to Symantec or others and overall does not do an effective job at properly protecting a system.
Avast! Home Edition is another free security suite which protects against viruses, spyware, and rootkits, as well as P2P and IM scanning. It includes a webshield which scans all HTTP traffic, and a light firewall which uses signature-based detection to scan for known worms and viruses. It also has 64-bit compatibility, making it a good choice for some of the newer systems on the market. While all these features give an adequate level of protection for the price, the resource-heavy features again tend to make Avast! A bit slow to begin virus scanning. Overall, this is one of the best free security applications.
While there are several popular freeware antivirus applications out there, they all tend to have the same flaws: weak or no firewall, high false positive rating (to scare users into buying the “better” edition, I suspect), little or no rootkit and trojan protection, no real-time scanning, no “self-defense” application (making the AV themselves vulnerable to attack), and general incompatibility. While these tend to be general problems, they typically stem from the goal of the application trying to be “light” and “simple”, while unfortunately tending to sacrifice security itself.
As far as the paid versions, they tend to fix all the problems mentioned above, but have the curse of popularity to deal with. Symantec and Mcafee being the two main examples, the popularity of these has become so great that often malware coders won’t release the code into “the wild” (the public) until it can pass as clean. This allows the virus itself to bypass the most popular forms of protection and potentially infect more computers for longer. In my own opinion, the best overall security suite is Kaspersky, which has a lighter footprint than competing products, has better overall security than free versions, and is priced reasonably for a yearly subscription.

Steven asks…
I am creating a Yahoo Answers for software developers within my organization. How should I market this?
Basically we have an internal website where we used to have forum, however, it was not used at all. My team has developed a tool similar to Yahoo Answers and I am brainstorming some marketing ideas to get everyone to use this fantastic tool.
Anything would be great, thank you.

Jere answers:
Send an email with link on your organization’s list serve.

Linda asks…
I need to set up a group mailing list for a sports club. How do I do this?
About every 3-4 months, I need to send out email for a sports club as its secretary and volunteer coordinator. There are about 400 names on this list. How do I set it up so I can mail it all at one time?

Jere answers:
1) You can download and setup Free and OpenSource Email Campaign Manager PHP Script Phplist(http://www.phplist.com) in your website.
(or)
2) Use Email Marketing Software like nMailDirect – http://www.nmaildirect.com for your group mailing requirements

Ruth asks…
i want to ask about email marketing software…?
What is it for and who are the people that can greatly benefit for it?

Jere answers:
An email marketing software is simply just like the name states it is. Is it a software that business use to help market themselves or a product/service that they are offering through email.
The main people who benefit it are of course are the people who use it, which are businesses. A lot of businesses will use the software and send out massive amount emails to people about a sale or some sort of promo. Some of those people will be interested in the sale and will go to the store to buy it. In turn, the business makes money.
Hope that helps.

Jenny asks…
what do you think about email marketing software?

Jere answers:
Hi Surjz,
Email marketing software is a good thing but in the hands of someone who is inexperienced, it can be a bad thing.
If you are a business then you will of course want to keep in touch with your customers and if you collect their email addresses then you can use email software to send them emails.
Its important to get software that allows subscribers to unsubscribe from your mailings or they will get annoyed, plus it is a legal requirement these days anyway! In the wrong hands it can be used to send loads of emails that nobody requested, aka “spam” and is the scourge of the internet!
These days you’d be far better to go for a managed service such as those from aweber or getresponse (etc.). Not only will they be spam-act compliant, but they boast far better deliverability rates than you or I could manage ourselves.
I hope this helps.

Your Questions About Direct Marketing Definition

David asks…
Presentation Help please?
Ok so I need all the info I can get on Marketing.. I tried wikipedia but wasnt satisfy with the results I got. Its a powerpoint presentation and i need atleast 12 slides.. please help me out..
I need some help with a good definition of Marketing, the types of marketing, what marketing is used for? etc..
Thank you..

Jere answers:
->Definition: a.the act or process of selling or purchasing in a market
b.the process of technique of promoting, selling, and distributing a product or service
c.an aggregate of functions involved in moving goods from producer to consumer
->The first know use of marketing was in 1561.
->Some types include: Direct marketing (is a form of advertising that reaches its audience without using traditional formal channels of advertising, such as TV, newspapers or radio), Multi-level marketing (marketing strategy in which the sales force is compensated not only for sales they personally generate, but also for the sales of others they recruit, creating a downline of distributors and a hierarchy of multiple levels of compensation.), global Marketing (The Oxford University Press defines global marketing as “marketing on a worldwide scale reconciling or taking commercial advantage of global operational differences, similarities and opportunities in order to meet global objectives.”), internet marketing (also known as digital, web, online, or e-marketing) (is the marketing (generally promotion) of products or services over the Internet.), etc.
->Marketing is the activity, set of institutions, and processes for creating, communicating, delivering, and exchanging offerings that have value for customers, clients, partners, and society at large. It generates the strategy that underlies sales techniques, business communication, and business developments. It is an integrated process through which companies build strong customer relationships and create value for their customers and for themselves.
->Promotional content include: Advertising • Branding • Underwriting • Direct marketing • Personal Sales Product Placement • Publicity Sales Promotion • Loyalty marketing • Premiums • Prizes
->Promotional Media Include: Printing • Publication Broadcasting • Out-of-home • Internet marketing • Point of sale • Promotional merchandise • Digital marketing • In-game In-store demonstration • Word-of-mouth marketing • Brand Ambassador • Drip Marketing
->A formal approach to this customer-focused marketing is known as SIVA[11] (Solution, Information, Value, Access). This system is basically the four Ps renamed and reworded to provide a customer focus. The SIVA Model provides a demand/customer-centric alternative to the well-known 4Ps supply side model (product, price, placement, promotion) of marketing management.
Product?Solution
Price?Value
Place?Access
Promotion?Information
->Marketing research involves conducting research to support marketing activities, and the statistical interpretation of data into information.
->Types of marketing research
Marketing research, as a sub-set aspect of marketing activities, can be divided into the following parts:
Primary research (also known as field research), which involves the conduction and compilation of research for a specific purpose.
Secondary research (also referred to as desk research), initially conducted for one purpose, but often used to support another purpose or end goal.
Marketing management can also rely on various technologies within the scope of its marketing efforts. Computer-based information systems can be employed, aiding in better processing and storage of data. Marketing researchers can use such systems to devise better methods of converting data into information, and for the creation of enhanced data gathering methods. Information technology can aid in enhancing an MKIS’ software and hardware components, and improve a company’s marketing decision-making process.
Services marketing relates to the marketing of services, as opposed to tangible products. A service (as opposed to a good) is typically defined as follows:
The use of it is inseparable from its purchase (i.e., a service is used and consumed simultaneously)
It does not possess material form, and thus cannot be touched, seen, heard, tasted, or smelled.
The use of a service is inherently subjective, meaning that several persons experiencing a service would each experience it uniquely.
Hope That Helps!!

Laura asks…
Whats is marketing about?
career options

Jere answers:
Hi,
There are many web definitions of marketing like:
–The all-embracing function that links the business with customer needs and wants in order to get the right product to the right place at the right time
–The achievement of corporate goals through meeting and exceeding customer needs better than the competition
–The management process that identifies, anticipates and supplies customer requirements efficiently and profitably
–Marketing may be defined as a set of human activities directed at facilitating and consummating exchanges
Marketing is used to identify the customer, satisfy the customer, and keep the customer. With the customer as the focus of its activities, it can be concluded that marketing management is one of the major components of business management.
In short, every activity we do, can be considered as a part of marketing.

Joseph asks…
whats direct marketing techniques?
hi,
Whats the meaning of direct marketing techniques?
Thanks

Jere answers:
It means that the firm contact the end consumer directly.
While usually, the firms need to deal with wholesalers & retailers in direct marketing they reach the consumer.
Another thing – direct marketing is usually personalized – for example personalized mail (while TV on the other hand is not direct since it is not personalized – yet)
Other activities under this definition are :
1. 1 to 1 sampling activities.
2. Direct mailing.
3. Door 2 door sales.

William asks…
is marcom a software or a marketing concept?

Jere answers:
MARCOM is a marketing term. Definition below;
Marketing communication (or marcom) consists of the messages and related media used to communicate with a market. Those who practice advertising, branding, direct marketing, graphic design, marketing, packaging, promotion, publicity, public relations, sales, sales promotion and online marketing are termed marketing communicators, marketing communication managers, or more briefly as marcom managers.
Traditionally, marketing communication practitioners focus on the creation and execution of printed marketing collateral; however, academic and professional research developed the practice to use strategic elements of branding and marketing in order to ensure consistency of message delivery throughout an organization. Many trends in business can be attributed to marketing communication; for example: the transition from customer service to customer relations, and the transition from human resources to human solutions. In branding, opportunities to contact stakeholders are called brand touchpoints (or points of contact.) Marketing communication is concerned with the general behavior of an organization and the perceptions of the organization that are promoted to stakeholders through these touchpoints.
Integrated Marketing Communication is accepted as a goal of a marketing communication strategy.

Thomas asks…
business? acounting? marketing?
k i need the definitions for those..what is business managment? acounting and marketing? can someone tell me the definition for those?

Jere answers:
Marketing:
There are many different definitions of marketing. Consider some of the following alternative definitions:
“The all-embracing function that links the business with customer needs and wants in order to get the right product to the right place at the right time”
“The achievement of corporate goals through meeting and exceeding customer needs better than the competition”
“The management process that identifies, anticipates and supplies customer requirements efficiently and profitably”
“Marketing may be defined as a set of human activities directed at facilitating and consummating exchanges”
Which definition is right? In short, they all are. They all try to embody the essence of marketing:
• Marketing is about meeting the needs and wants of customers;
• Marketing is a business-wide function – it is not something that operates alone from other business activities;
• Marketing is about understanding customers and finding ways to provide products or services which customers demand
Business managment:
Benchmarking is the process of determining who is the very best, who sets the standard, and what that standard is. In baseball, you could argue that seven consecutive World Series Championships made the New York Yankees the benchmark.
If we were to benchmark “world conquest”, what objective measure would we use to compare Julius Caesar to Adolph Hitler; Gengis Khan to Napoleon? Which of them was the epitome, and why?
We do the same thing in business. Who is the best sales organization? The most responsive customer service department? The leanest manufacturing operation? And how do we quantify that standard?
Accounting:
It is not easy to provide a concise definition of accounting since the word has a broad application within businesses and applications.
The American Accounting Association define accounting as follows:
“the process of identifying, measuring and communicating economic information to permit informed judgements and decisions by users of the information!.
This definition is a good place to start. Let’s look at the key words in the above definition:
– It suggests that accounting is about providing information to others. Accounting information is economic information – it relates to the financial or economic activities of the business or organisation.
– Accounting information needs to be identified and measured. This is done by way of a “set of accounts”, based on a system of accounting known as double-entry bookkeeping. The accounting system identifies and records “accounting transactions”.
– The “measurement” of accounting information is not a straight-forward process. It involves making judgements about the value of assets owned by a business or liabilities owed by a business. It is also about accurately measuring how much profit or loss has been made by a business in a particular period. As we will see, the measurement of accounting information often requires subjective judgement to come to a conclusion
– The definition identifies the need for accounting information to be communicated. The way in which this communication is achieved may vary. There are several forms of accounting communication (e.g. Annual report and accounts, management accounting reports) each of which serve a slightly different purpose. The communication need is about understanding who needs the accounting information, and what they need to know!
Accounting information is communicated using “financial statements”
What is the purpose of financial statements?
There are two main purposes of financial statements:
(1) To report on the financial position of an entity (e.g. A business, an organisation);
(2) To show how the entity has performed (financially) over a particularly period of time (an “accounting period”).
The most common measurement of “performance” is profit.
It is important to understand that financial statements can be historical or relate to the future

Your Questions About Business Online Banking

Richard asks…
How long does it take for payments from one bank to another clear? (UK)?
My friend of mine has lent me £30 via online banking to buy a xbox 360. The offer ends on the 30th of May so I need to of recieved the payment by then. He sent the money from natwest online banking on Saturday, but there is a bank holiday tomorow and apparently it takes 3 business for the money to clear. So if anyone has used online banking to send payments could you tell me how long it takes for the other person to recieve the payment.
Thanks.

Jere answers:
It usually takes 3 days, but sometimes it can take up to 5 days or as few as a few hours. Maybe you can fax a receipt proving that you made a payment so the company can still give you that deal.

Carol asks…
How long does it take to ship 3 desktop computers from San Francisco to Chicago using USPS Express Mail?
I ordered 3 top-of the line desktop computers from a computer manufacturer in SF for my business for $4000 and they said they use USPS Express.
The order was placed 6 weeks ago and I paid with online bank check and the computers still have no arrived.
Is it normal for USPS to take this long with express shipping? Should I check or call them?

Jere answers:
That depends when the ship date was supposed to be. Express shipping only takes a couple of days once it is received by the post office. If the computer company has to build them custom first and are back ordered, it may take awhile before they are ready to ship. Since it’s been 6 weeks, you should contact them to find out the status. Has the payment cleared your bank?

Paul asks…
How do I commission my own investment firm?
Like etrade etc. I want to offer financial and online banking services. Would this process be similar to commissioning a bank?

Jere answers:
You must hold licenses. Financial services falls under the FSA regs in UK and the SEC in the USA. Each country has its own regulatory body. You cannot offer financial advice and or financial services without a licenses. You cannot own and operate an online bank without having a banking license and having a physical account at a correspondent bank and being part of a correspondent banking system. Further, those who have tried to skirt around licensing are all now in prison.
There are many popular digital currency sites which were not licensed and all of their owners are being indicted. E-gold is just one of them. But take eGold for instance, which is a digital currency and is a system which allows the instant transfer of gold ownership between users. E-gold Ltd. Is incorporated in Nevis, Lesser Antilles. On 27 April 2007, a federal grand jury in Washington, D.C. Indicted e?Gold Ltd and its owners on charges of money laundering, conspiracy, and operating an unlicensed money transmitting business.
Any business that transacts even part of its business in United States Dollars can be prosecuted by the feds no matter where the business is located. All USD falls under the watchful eye of the U.S. Treasury Department.

Mark asks…
Can I open a bank account in the Philippines if I do not have an address there?
Is there an online bank I can use there? What are some good banking websites that have the highest CD and Money Market yields?

Jere answers:
You cannot open a bank account without appearing personally and without a legitimate home or business address in the particular area where the bank is situated. Also, you must have an existing and active account with that particular bank before you can access it’s online services.

Charles asks…
Quickbooks – tracking expenses from imported bank transactions?
I have imported a lot of transactions from my online banking for my business. I need to categorize them so that I can track expenses. For example; my meals with clients. Do I let Quickbooks just create an account for that restaurant and then categorize that restaurant’s account as an expense (where you map it to a tax category) or should I create specific accounts for Meals with Clients, Equipment expenses and move each transaction to those accounts?

Jere answers:
You’ll get more useful and informative reports if you create specific accounts as you suggested as an option. Instead of ‘Meals with Clients’, I’d go with ‘Meals and Entertainment’. Yeah, I know, it’s a small thing, but actually you can put a lot of stuff into such an account. Meals, golf or other sports events, etc. – it just creates a little more room to move, so to speak. I guess what I mean is that you don’t want your ‘specific’ accounts to be TOO specific, otherwise you’ll end up with a huge list of expense accounts.

Your Questions About Internet Business Solutions

James asks…
Who offers the best internet marketing solutions?
Thanks

Jere answers:
“There are countless internet marketing companies, which help you get your internet business off the ground. I would check with the better business bureau to see which has got good reviews.”

Helen asks…
What is the outlook on Internet Marketing in this economy?

Jere answers:
Internet Marketing – A Solution for cost cutting

“Marketing & Advertising” are the most important area which no business sector can avoid. Though marketing and advertising is quite costly field, but an organization has to go for it as they have to show and maintain their existence.
Taking both the above stated cases together, what will be the best medium for advertising and marketing in the period of recession & financial crisis…… Of course INTERNET.
Internet is the cheapest and most effective of all other marketing areas. Here are the few important ways for promoting your brand through internet –
Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
Pay per click Advertising
Affiliate Marketing

Robert asks…
how to make internet business?

Jere answers:
1. Find out what the market is making money. And what may interest you that makes money within these profitable markets.
2. Create valuable contents around the niche you choose. For example, a niche isn’t health. You need to dig deeper, like health supplements. Then dig even deeper, – health supplement drinks.
3. So when you see there is a demand, you made sure the market is making money and you’ve also, broke it down to one niche target group THEN see what customers are asking.
4. Visit forums where people buy these things. Don’t visit forums where people look for free stuff and where people don’t spend money and think business is about not investing in knowledge etc.
Why? You want to eliminate people who are not serious. People say they want to do this and have this but, wanting is not good enough. They have to be hungry for it, want it immediately now and will…act.
5. Now, get a blog and start creating content around this niche and make sure, it answers with solutions. Instead of talking about the products, talk about health issues that people are asking about.
On your left of your blog will be products, affilate links people click on.
So, now you need to join an affilate program that has products geared to your readers, future customers.
6. Have a form on your blog so you don’t lose people when they come and go. Get them to fill in a form and send them at least 10 new email articles, one or twice a week. I send about 3 a week and sometimes four.
This builds relationship and you can leave a link of your product at bottom.
Three things you need to know about what your customer wants..
1. What’s in it for me.
2. What’s in it for me.
3. What’s in it for me.

Donald asks…
What is a good internet service provider in Cebu?

Jere answers:
There are quite a few.

Susan asks…
what is an Internet Gateway Device?

Jere answers:
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Jump to: navigation, search
Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) comes with a solution for Network Address Translation (NAT) traversal.
Internet Gateway Device (IGD) protocol is embeded in some internet routers. It makes possible for applications to automatically configure NAT routing.
Applications including Peer-to-peer, multi-player gaming, remote assistance needs a way to communicate through home or business network gateways. This issue is classically resolved by configuring routers manually, but involves a good understanding of networks technology. Another classical solution is adding a specific NAT traversal solution for popular applications, but prove impossible to scale to many applications.
IGD provides the main following methods:
Learning public IP address
Enumerating existing port mappings
Adding and removing port mappings
Assigning lease times to mappings

Your Questions About Internet Marketing Association

Laura asks…
What’s the best place to find local music artists?
I am planning on starting a small music video business over the summer. I’m a video director/editor so I’d like to take the opportunity to make some cash by making music videos for local artists. The problem is that I have no idea where to find these potential clients to propose my help to. What’s a good way to find local artists/bands and talk to them? I already tried the internet and email some bands, but it’s been a month and no one replied. I want to meet them face to face.

Jere answers:
I’m a songwriter from Albuquerque, NM who also has a home recording studio. I have been on a campaign to try to associate myself with local musicians and singers for about a year now and in the beginning, it always seems like a huge task but, the reality is that local musicians actually want to know who you are and if you just make yourself visible to them, they will actually find you. The first thing you need to do is set yourself up at myspace.com. I was unaware until just last year that myspace was initially created for people in the music industry. My first two days on myspace and I was all of a sudden friends with several local bands, singers, music promoters, radio stations and recording studios. I had also made contacts with many national promoters, a few record labels, and several big name groups and singers. So, myspace is a MUST DO if you are in the music industry. Next idea is to find out where are the one or two best places to buy music equipment in your local area? In Albuquerque, that is Grandma’s Music & Sound and Guitar Center. These local music equipment dealers usually provide a way for musicians and singers to connect with each other through a free bulletin board or newsletter. Get yourself posted there. Go to Yahoo Groups and see if there is a local musicians Group for your city there and join it. If not, start one it’s free and it will help you find musician’s who are looking to connect. If there is a local FREE music scene or add sheet newspaper that you can pick up at convenient stores, super markets, or other places locally, like the Alibi (our local entertainment sheet) take out a small ad in this paper just to let people know who you are. If this free local paper publishes articles about the local music scene, talk to them about writing some articles for them about what you know best like recording or promoting yourself in the music business. Write the articles to genuinely help the reader. Don’t sell yourself. Usually at the end of the article they will allow you to write a small description of who you are and how to contact you. Take advantage of that. People who read and like your articles and find than helpful will remember you and will very often want to contact you personally. Try to find the time to write and continually improve a collection of articles that will be helpful to musicians in your local area. Find our about TAXI.com, CD Baby, how Amazon.com will promote Indie artist CDs and helps Indie artists, find out about all the Performance Rights Organizations (BMI, ASCAP, SESAC – as a studio you can join all of them – they can help you connect), join the Songwriter’s Guild of America (SGA) and the International Songwriter’s Association (ISA) and take advantage of their newsletters. In short, become an EXPERT on the music industry and write articles that will help local musicians understand it better because it’s a total mystery to them and they will want to know you if you can help them understand it better. You might consider using MEETUP.com and organize a local group that is serious about being successful in the music industry. Maybe more than one group. Meet at your studio so, they can see first hand that you can help them. Local songwriter’s for instance love to meet and critique each other and get their music heard. You might sponsor a local songwriter’s showcase where they can come and play their songs and/or a local battle of the bands or even tie into or help promote Ernie Balls Battle of the Bands (search for it at Google). You might consider giving away FREE recording time through local music dealers to promote your studio. If you want to connect with musicians, you need to learn to think like them and to be as helpful as you can to them. For instance, find a local group that is playing cover music and is REALLY REALLY good. Go hear them play. Buy a drink for the band leader and suggest that they consider recording and promoting their own Christmas Music Album. Tell them you will help them promote it at CD Baby, Amazon.com, local music stores (in Albuquerque, Hastings sells Indie CDs of local artists off the shelf). Tell them you will record them for FREE for the promoter’s share of the proceeds of all music sales. I guarantee you if they sell anything they will be back to get you to record them again and this time they will be willing to pay the cost of recording. Link them up with local songwriters and get them to do an original album and promote that for them too. It’s easier than ever before for Indie artists to get into the music business today than ever before in history because of the Internet. Best way to promote your studio, is to help them promote their careers as inexpensively as possible but, always share in the proceeds of future sales. One successful group, will pay all the overhead on your studio and from that point on you are home free. Good luck to you!

Ken asks…
What are the job opportunities for UK international students (graduates) in Canada?
I have recently finished my bachelors degree in Civil engineering and thinking of moving to Canada with a job. I have surfed the internet but couldn’t find satisfactory information. I would be glad if someone would give me some clues as to how to get a head start. Any sites or information will help.

Jere answers:
I’m not sure if you are asking “How to find a job?” or “What are the requirements to work in Canada?”.
I would start by reading the Citizenship and Immigration Canada web-site *carefully*. Read the requirements for permanent residency, work permits, and the requirements for Canadian companies to offer employment to foreign workers.
For starters, it is illegal to work or look for work in Canada unless you are a citizen, permanent resident, or have a work permit. In order to apply for a work permit or permanent residency you must obtain a valid job offer from a Canadian company (obviously while outside of Canada) and that company must have permission from CIC to hire foreign workers. Permission is in the form of an LMO (labour market opinion) report which shows a shortage of Canadians qualified for that profession.
Next, you must have at least one year’s work experience in your profession and most Canadian companies will want to see a lot more work experience than that — otherwise it isn’t worth going through the process. So, you need to get work in your home country as an engineer. You will also need atleast six month living expenses ($13,000 or so) to apply.
If you are have experience and are looking for work…
1. Remember that few Canadian companies can hire you. It is pointless looking on Canadian job sites or contacting random companies unless the job specifically says ‘Foreign workers’. Companies which have permission will be looking out of the country.
2. Target specific industries. Look at those which are likely to have a shortage of workers in Canada. Read Canadian the financial newpapers/web-sites, look at HRSDC reports, industry specific web-sites, provincial labour web-sites, etc. The oil and gas industry in Alberta would be an obvious choice for a civil engineer as would any companies involved in large scale civil projects.
3. Try to think where Canadian companies might look for people. In most cases, they will be looking first in the United States, then Australia, New Zealand, and the UK.
4. Look at industry specific associations — both in Canada and in those countries they would likely be looking in. They can be by industry, by geographical location, or various certification agencies (such as provincial professional engineering societies). Join web-sites, blogs, discussion groups, etc. Attend trade shows.
5. Look at online consulting work. Slightly harder for a civil engineer, but getting experience on say documentation, research, copy editing, etc. Might be a way. If you can’t … Consider writing papers, helping public/open source projects.
6. Look at (unpaid) volunteer work in Canada, continuing education courses, or at least consider visiting the country.
7. If you have the money, consider taking a master’s degree in Canada. If you get a master’s there, you may apply for a two year open work permit and if you obtain at least one year’s work experience within the two years, you may apply for permanent residency under the experience class program.

Where can a woman get help in Minnesota to start her own business?
My mom wants to make and market some of her recipes for chili sauce, bbq sauce, and I think there was some dressings too. She has celiac disease, and her sauces & dressings would be suitable for anyone regardless of diet. I need to know the proper channels to go through and the capital to do this. I know there’s also legal things that go along with doing something like this. How does she get it started etc. Any women entrepreneurs out there please share your experiences!??! I welcome all comments! As this is a dream of hers for some time & I want to do what I can to help! Thank you in advance!
=)
WOW!! I got several answers within a short span! & I want to thank EVERYONE!! Jack D and girlwhoknowsitstrue & storeonwheels I so appreciate the great answers… I was able to get back to ONE of you…. I clicked on the others names to thank them as well & give a lil feedback…. for some reason it won’t let me!? I thank EVERYONE who has replied so far! netnew, I also have a blog which I started yesterday in hopes of getting more world wide responses… the US is a good start too, but I know going by one’s own state is the way to go…
http://tzbug7.blogspot.com
=)

Jere answers:
Hi, get a health license per your state requirements. You can check online – type food license and you will get the license for Minnesota. You may have to take some health and food preparation classes too.
Also for starting a small business, go to the internet and type small business minnesota, see what pops up. You can ask the Small business association for guidance. They are a bunch of veterans who can assist you.
For capital, it is not going to be easy. Banks don’t come forward for new startup businesses. You can do one of two things. Borrow money for capital from your relatives and friends. Write them a notarized note that you will pay them back on a set date (say 2 years). Or you can put your home as collateral (if u have a home) and the bank will give you Equity money as loan (which is repayable in 15 or 30 yrs).
A food and health license or permit is a must as you don’t want the state to shut you down. Health classes, sanitary preparation of food, right way to package and maintain right temperature while cooking and storage are all important.
Get books from the library on food preparation, bottling, etc. Check for local vendors who will have plastic or glass bottles. You can print labels at home in color using a home printer or find a good local printer to do it. Find labels that are AVERY brand with 4 inches wide x 2 inches high.
I do designing of labels so if you want help I can do it for a small fee. Contact me for this. Also if you found my information useful please write me by clicking on my name.
If you have anyother questions, I’d be glad to answer them for you to the best of my knowledge.

Your Questions About Email Marketing Templates

Mark asks…
What is the best software to use for creating a simple but impressive (CSS type) business website? ?
I know there are template based programs available through hosting packages etc but are these any good? And if so which ones – do they look professional and slick? Many thanks for any help – I just don’t have time to learn dreamweaver right at this moment!

Jere answers:
Recommend you try creating a free professional website with Microsoft Office Live Small Business – http://starturl.com/officelive . Currently, MS is offering a free domain name (i.e. Yourbusiness.com) for the first year. It also has a free online web design tool that allows you to create web pages without coding. You can upload your own website as well when you have time to design one later on. It comes with 500mb of storage and has no ads. A website is only one part of your online presence – you will need to have good email marketing campaigns and office live has that capability as well.

Mary asks…
What computer courses should I take to make myself more marketable?
Im 29 and embarrassed to say that I know next to nothing about computers. I know WORD but just what I needed to write essays as a university student. Now Im finished but I feel at a huge disadvantage because Ive got a liberal arts degree and its very hard to get a job. I have a lot of qualities and life experiences that I believe have made me a well rounded and educated person. I speak 3 languages fluently; I have lived in various countries. But as you recent college graduates know, having specific jobs skills or experience in a field are the most valuable assets. the job market isnt for those who have a broad education. Im in a post bachelor diploma now to get a teaching certificate, but I would also like to have more options, maybe work for a company in an office job. I have a bachelors degree in Linguistics. I GREATLY appreciate your advice; Im pretty frustrated and a little depressed. Thanks!

Jere answers:
Your best bet is to *first* sit down with a general overview from a good tech book series such as the “missing manual” or “visual quickstart guide” — e.g. “Mac OS X: The Missing Manual”, by David Pogue … These two particular series are designed to be read alone, sitting next to a computer, and will teach you nearly everything you need to know. Books published by O’Reilly or Peachpit are your best bet. After a general overview to the operating system of your choice, you should learn Word, Excel, and Powerpoint … Word and powerpoint you can learn from practice and exploring (they’re easier than they look): make up bogus documents and format them to your hearts content… Play with the styles and templates … Peruse a guide in the library. Excel you really need to learn from a book/workshop. Knowing Microsoft Access will make you extremely marketable to many small businesses. Many townships have community education programs which teach all of this.
You should spend about a month learning the OS, the bundled applications (email, address book, calendar, web browser, and so on), and what all of the settings do, and then the office suite should take you 4 to 6 months to get pretty competent (the bulk of the time being on Access and Excel).
The icing on the cake for a business is experience in scripting and programming languages. You should learn HTML and Visual Basic (both of which would take you a couple months), and especially Java (which would take you a year if you took a semester-long class, which is taught at every community college in the country).

John asks…
How do I word a suprise college graduation invitation?
I am throwing my sister a suprise graduation party shes graduating from college. I have no clue how to word it I want to include suprise graduation party and the college that shes graduating from. Any ideas?
Stephanie- I really like that idea but how do I let the family/friends know she doesn’t have a clue LOL and I would like to put her college and what she majored in or should I leave that out.

Jere answers:
I have a silly little picture in my mind of a card with the “Top Secret File” logo on the front. (Google “Top Secret” and hit images to see what I’m talking about). I don’t know if retail makes any cards that have that on the front, but maybe you can make them at home? I know you can buy blank cards from places like Hallmark, and they give a link to a website with the template and then you can make it yourself.
However, I AM pretty sure that places like Hallmark sell cards that mention “surprise party” on the front and/or the envelope. If you don’t see any of those, just buy a nice graduation party invitation that you like.
Write something along the lines of “You are invited to a surprise party celebrating the college graduation of [sister’s name]. [Sister’s name] will be graduating from [UCLA] this [spring] with a [Bachelor’s degree in Marketing].” Then fill in the rest of the information: Thrown by: _____, Date: ______, Location: ______, RSVP/Contact information: _____
Also, if it’s going to be a surprise, you may want to look ahead and plan how to hide it. Make sure that the phone number you give them to contact/RSVP with WILL NOT be seen by your sister; make it your own personal email and your own personal cell phone number; if you only have a house number, make a note to not leave a detailed message in case she overhears.
If you want it a secret until the very end, you’ll have to make the arrangements of who to take her out while you set up, how they’re going to entertain her for the time it takes to set up, the time they’ll be bringing her back, and the signal to turn off the lights. In order to keep it a surprise until the very end, you’ll also have to hide the cars of the visitors!!! Figure out the best place for them to park so that your sister doesn’t see all the cars as she’s pulling up; have them park around the corner and have the ” secret escorts” drive her home from the other side of the block or something.
Good luck! Hope it all works out. And remember, even if somehow she finds out and the surprise is spoiled, the party will still be fun!

Ruth asks…
What is the cheapest hosting for my domain?
I want to blog and am Looking for the most reliable hosting, with a fair price. Where should I go?

Jere answers:
I found this found this helpful link- http://www.ims-oc.com/top-reasons-why-dreamhost-is-most-reliable/
If you are in the market for a Domain Hosting Service, I highly recommend going with DreamHost over other Hosts for these TOP 10 reasons:
1) They are completely user-friendly
I personally bought 6-8 different hosting packages in my career from Ipowerweb, Powweb, Lunarpages, Hostgator, and several others and my vote goes to Dreamhost, since they are most advance and simple as they come. Yin & YANG… best of both worlds.
2) Employee-owned
You know that you’ll get Class A support, service, and product when the company employees are vested. Wouldn’t you work your butt off if you worked for a company that you own? In my experience, this principle can be taken beyond just hosting. It’s just purely SMART.
3) Comprehensive help
With brilliantly designed user-supported Wiki-Page, what else can go wrong? There’s a high chance that the questions you have had already been asked. Dreamhost makes it easy for you to navigate questions existing customers already asked so you can access them with ease.
4) Incredibly creative Company
There are many available software and plug-ins that you can use to enrich your product/page that Dreamhost bring to your front door. This hosting company is very well vested in your success, thus then networks you with their affiliates and partners… services they too themselves buy.
5) Online Customer Support around the Clock
The concept of virtual assistance wasn’t around when I first signed up, but Dreamhost evolved as expected. With a press-button access, much like the “easy-button” at Staples you can immediately access virtual assistance. This is common nowadays, but surprisingly some hosting providers are still behind.
6) Very responsive (You can either call or login to contact their online Virtual Assistant).
Most companies are quick to fire back auto-reply emails, but let’s face it, some organic replies are not in a timely fashion. Dreamhost’s response rate eliminates that headache thus you have one less thing to worry.
7) Customized back-end Control Panel / Dashboard
Beautifully designed back-end makes you proud to be a customer. Easy to navigate within the first few days of use. Most hosting company are still stuck on the CPANEL nightmare. If your hosting provider still does not have a customized Control PANEL, then you’re with a company that is a follower, and not a leader.
Money-back Guaranteed.
I know most companies promise you a guarantee within their guidelines, but Dreamhost’s team would go out of their way to refund beyond deadline dates.
9) One-button Installation.
If you want to insert a blog to go with your domain, all you have to do is enter your domain and press install. Dreamhost will actually automatically install wordpress for you. You can also integrate shopping carts, picture gallery’s and much more with the same push-button installation. All in house. All inclusive.
10) You get what you pay for.
Again, I particularly like the fact that Dreamhost has its own customized user panel, which removes all the headaches and intimidation of your typical CPANEL (Template Dashboard), which most companies still use. You can also host unlimited domains and email addresses. From my experience, pick DreamHost for a complete peace of mind.
DreamHost’s package costs $8.95 a month which is a very affordable rate. I plan on staying with these guys for the next 10 plus years.
If you truly must go cheap… my second recommendation is HostGator. I have used HostGator before, and although I am an affiliate to both Hosts (Hostgator pays me more for my surveys), I prefer DreamHost over Hostgator simply because I am very critical about originality. However, programmers and sophisticated users will have no problem with HostGator. And if you can navigate, think, and breathe like a programmer, than Hostgator is good enough for you.
HostGator’s hosting package can run as low as $4.95 per month. In my opinion, Quality always prevail over the Quantity it costs. DreamHost

Your Questions About How To Do Business Online In India

Thomas asks…
Need help for starting online selling?
I want to sell the electronic devices through the Internet legally. Is there a separate license in order to sell online?
Where to buy the appropriate license in India?
How much it costs?
What documentation is required?
Does the dealership need to receive from manufacturers of electronic goods?.

Jere answers:
TARTING AN ONLINE BUSNESS OR ECOMMERCE STORE
Many people contact us and ask about getting started with an Online Business so they can sell online. Most already have a day job or business and either want to extend or add to their current activities. The advice that we offer always starts with the same question.
Do you have a business plan?
This may sound like a mundane question but it is essential that you understand that starting an eBusiness is just like starting any business. Don’t enter with your eyes closed. It is very easy to start a business on the web but that also means that it very easy to blow your money as well. When people come to us we try to determine if they have a real business opportunity because we want to see people succeed. In building a business plan for your ebusiness you have to take into account all the traditional issues. There is a good site that is run by the Australian government that is very useful.
Here is a link to get you started with your business plan
You can start an online business for a few hundred dollars but plan your budget
Your online business will only be as successful as the plan that you have. The first important step in any business is to create a plan and a budget. There are many people right now thinking of selling online due to the current economic issues. What are the real costs associated with starting an online business or adding an online shop to an existing business. This is a question we are hearing often and the answer is not always as clear as there are many different views and opinions in the market place. There are a number of options to sell online here are some of the common ways we see
1 Use an existing service like eBay there you will pay fees to list your products and also a “Final Value Fee” which is a percentage of the sale price. If you are selling your old books or stuff eBay is a great solution. Many businesses also sell on eBay as Power Sellers however costs can get high and there are limitations on what you can do.
2 Buy some open source online shop software, have a developer build a store and find somewhere to host it. There are pro’s and con’s but it is NOT FREE. The initial costs maybe lower but the longer term costs of maintenance and management can be very high.
3 Get your “friends, friend”, who happens to be a web developer, to build you a website and shopping cart. This is failure waiting to happen and is the least recommended solution.
4 Use a fully hosted eCommerce Solution such as eCorner. There are many to choose from and a quick Google search on “hosted ecommerce solution” will find many companies that offer a package. My tip is that if you are based in Australia or New Zealand make sure that the hosted solution is here and not in the USA or Europe.

Michael asks…
Hi,what are the Pre-requisites to start online business in india?(sell a product online)?
Do i require any license?
Thanku

Jere answers:
There are many factors to consider. Are you going to sell to your local area or strictly through the internet to other countries.
#1 If selling locally, you need to check with your government and ensure the products you want to sell are approved. Also since the laws are different from country to country, you need to check with YOURS to make sure you don’t need a license to do business, on line or off line.
#2 You need to make sure the company you are looking at will allow you to do business from India. Not all companies are approved in all countries. Don’t take someone else’s word for it that you can do business from anywhere. In most cases with a product driven company, you are required to purchase a certain amount for your own use. If the company does not ship to your area, you will need to find someone in another country to receive your shipments and then re-ship to you as a gift or something like that.
#3 get all the facts before you join. Better to do that up front than get signed up and then find out you can’t do business from where you are or that the cost of doing it will be too excessive.

Your Questions About Direct Marketing Strategies

Steven asks…
Is fax broadcasting an effective marketing strategy in 2008?
I own a startup at http://www.chronopolicy.com – an employee scheduling software service that enforces time and attendance policy and tracks employee work activity in corporate workforces. Is fax broadcasting an effective marketing strategy or do fax attendants simply toss these materials in the nearest recycling bin?

Jere answers:
When I get a solicitation over the phone, fax, or my cell….that company goes straight on my
“I will never do business with these companies” list.
Nothing pisses me off more than phone solicitation….I expect many more feel the same way.
Direct mail is the way to go….the mailbox is the fisrt place people go when they get home.

Lisa asks…
I need assistance with marketing my business. Where can i find ideas; are there any websites or anything?
I am running a fitness center that has been around for a while. The membership numbers are low and I need some Ideas how to market and advertise besides the usual newspaper, tv and radio ads.

Jere answers:
Life is becoming faster & faster, nobody has time to visit to your site.No matter how great the products you’re selling are, people aren’t going to beat a path to your door to get them. You need to bring the products to the customers. So DIRECT marketing is the BEST strategy.(I am also following the same)

Mandy asks…
What is the best marketing strategy for an HVAC company?
My father and I run a premire Lennox dealership. We’ve been in business since 1963, my grandpa started the company. We have a good reputation, were NATE certified. We get most of our new customers from recommendation. Is it good to mail a letter about our company with coupons on serivce a good idea?

Jere answers:
Direct mail is one avenue but in this economy I would look at less expensive options. Since you have been in business for so long i am sure you have a large database of customers. If you have email addresses I would set up an email campaign (using the same materials you where going to send out in print). Do you have a web site? If not i would get one. If so I would launch a Pay Per Click campaign targeting key words that are relevant to your industry. If you need help with any of this let me know. Where is your service area?

Maria asks…
How do you find facebook as a marketing channel?
There are various ways to market your product online and social marketing is just one of those. In comparison with other strategies such as article marketing how heavy do you use facebook as one of your strategies to market a product?

Jere answers:
Facebook can be a lucrative internet marketing strategy if used effectively. You can’t just use one strategy though, and you have to know that Facebook is more of a branding opportunity, and most successful businesses will not use it to sell products directly, but indirectly (if that makes sense).
Why?
Because building a successful online business isn’t about using one channel, it’s about using multiple internet marketing strategies together. Lately there is so much hype about using Facebook to market products online. This is completely wrong. People are on Facebook to connect with people, not businesses.
The way people use the internet is much different than old school brick and mortar business. It’s not selling to users, it’s users having the option to make there own decisions…just a click away.
You need to look at marketing on Facebook as permission based and 99.99% of people will not buy products or services if they “like” your business, or friend request you. Top internet marketers will agree that successful online business is not about getting, it’s about giving. That principle even holds more true to Facebook marketing. This is a direct channel to provide value to potential customers, free reports, thoughtful information, humorous tidbits of information sometimes seemingly unrelated to your business.
If potential customers see you as not selling, there more likely to look into what you do, consequently resulting in more traffic and more business.
If you have any questions about that let me know.
Sincerely,
The Wealth Kid

Your Questions About Business Online Courses

Maria asks…
What is the best accredited online college for active duty military personnel?
I plan on taking some online courses while im on active duty to earn my degrees in business/HR while i am on active duty for the U.S. NAVY. I just want to know which is the best/popular online college program. im sort of leaning towards The University of Phoenix, but then i just found out about Excelsior college which looks also good. Are there any others that are better for the working sailor?

Jere answers:
University of Phoenix
International accreditation.
Military discount.
Oldest.
Largest.
Thank you for your time.

Steven asks…
Taking online classes what is a good major for this career?
I am desperate to work in the music industry. So I decided that I will work a 9-5, do online courses and working at the studio and etc on off time. I already have the job ready for me too. So with onlince classes I dont know if I should take business management or if i should take communications. I was talking communications at Stockton and business at albright. Now I dont know which one is better.

Jere answers:
If you want to work in music business, there’s no place better to learn from than Berklee.
What’s really cool is that Berklee teaches online. ?
It’s not inexpensive but it’s Berklee.
Otherwise, you need to find courses in music business or recording arts – whichever you’re most interested in.
People with a degree in general business are a dime-a-dozen; you need the specialized music business training.

Lizzie asks…
What do you need to start a dog grooming business?
what degree should I take if I were to take an online business course. I have already been grooming for 5 years and plan to take additional classes to keep fresh. I have also managed a salon for two years as well. I’m asking to better my chances of getting a loan with poor credit.

Jere answers:
I am not answering what you asked because of your last sentence
with poor credit you will not get a loan
with poor credit you will not get to rent a place to conduct your Business
with poor credit you will not be able to get liability insurance for your business
as a pet owner going to someone new with my precious dog
my first question is are you insured
you cannot realize your dream until you repair your poor credit
I know that isn’t what you want to hear but it is the face you need to know

Chris asks…
Are there any methods to do website promotion?
I’m gonna start my Jerseys&Shoes business online, and of course I do have a website. I’m confident enough in my jerseys and shoes. As a matter of fact, I’m a rookie, so for the moment, I don’t want to advertise on Google or Yahoo.
So I’m just here to ask for your help: are there any methods to do website prommotion?

Jere answers:
That’s a good question. Are you looking for free sources of advertising? Well, you can look on the search engine, and type ‘free classified ads’, and place many free classified ads online. You can also, go to the search engine again, and search for ‘jersey’, and ‘shoes’ forums. Make up accounts at revelant forums. Put your website link in your ‘signature file’ for free traffic, but I must remind you to not spam the forums. Don’t place ads on the forum chat areas. You can place relevant helpful newsworthy items, but not spam. Perhaps you can go to the search engine again and search for ‘forum advertising rules’, and try to learn more about that. There’s a few methods to advertise on the net for free. Good luck!!

Michael asks…
Is there an online home business that doesn’t cost anything?
My wife and I are looking for home based online business that pays instead of charging.

Jere answers:
I tried over 15 opportunities in the course of 2 years so I have some great information for you plus a list of top 10 work at home scams!
I am a mother of two little girls who are actually tugging on my arm as I write this so I will try to be brief. Many people are looking for work from home companies. All the scams definitely create a big problem but also, there is a problem of people misunderstanding the difference between work from home “jobs” and work from home opportunities. There really are not work from home “jobs”. To get that you have to start working for a company in their offices first, then they MAY allow you to take the job home.
Most of the work from home opportunities that are legitimate offers are not an hourly pay type job. They are business opportunities that help you in starting your own business from your home. What you should do first is to decide if you are simply looking for an hourly rate type job or if you are looking for more of an opportunity for additional income such as what you would make in your own business being your own boss from home. Small home businesses have some small costs involved, less than $500 to start is reasonable and I would stay away from those wanting $1000-$5000. It doesn’t cost that much to start and run a home business so you shouldn’t pay it.
If you are coming across places that say free then I would RUN don’t walk the other way! They never are. I tried them many a times and 3 weeks later I had to buy this and 6 weeks later that. After 6 months these “free businesses” had cost me over $800 on average.
After trying 15 things I now work about 18-25 hours per week for a National Medical Healthcare Company. This is a nationally known and reputable home business which is what you need to make sure you are looking for. I have been with the company almost a year and a half now and I make over $4500 a month! In your first month, depending on how many hours you can work, I have seen people make anywhere from $500 to over $2500. And your income will increase each month because you get paid residual income as well.
The best part is they have 401(k), direct deposit, life insurance and a benefits package most of which you get from day one. In addition, there are no products, no hard selling or pushing, no cold calling, no home parties and no telemarketing! That was VERY important to me. I absolutely love working with them and I can’t believe I am making what I am making and in so few hours per week. The neat thing is there are other people on your team that you work with so you are never alone. You have great team support and you get to know the other people on your team pretty well.
I was a bit apprehensive at first because I know a lot of companies are not legit but this company is the number one National Medical Benefits Company in the US. They are a member of the US Chamber of Commerce, and the National Association of Dental Plans and the owner of the company actually sits on the board of The Consumer Health Alliance to which we are also members. Also they were featured in “The New York Times”, “Wall Street Journal” “Time Magazine” “American Medical Review” and even in the May 2008 issue of “Parents Magazine”. Even “60 Minutes” did a big special on this home based business.
Even more then all this is they are accepted at over 100,000 retailers nationwide. These are fortune 500 companies like Sears, Target, K-mart, Rite Aid, CVS, Wal-mart, Publix and more. These companies would never work with a company that was anything less than reputable.
You can research the company at www.workathomeplus.net
TOP 10 WORK AT HOME SCAMS:
10. Craft Assembly
9. Medical Billing
8. Email/Rebate Processing
7. “A List of Companies Looking for Home workers!”
6. “Just pay for and take this class first” Then we’ll give or find you a job!
5. Typing At Home / Data Entry
4. “Turn Your Computer Into a Money-Making Machine!”
3. Pyramid Schemes (this is NOT the same as Multi-Level Marketing MLM)
2. Chain Letters/Emails (“Make Money Fast”)
1. Envelope Stuffing
Please beware of these scams. There are some legit home businesses out there so be careful. Look for companies in business over 10 years. Look for companies with a needed product or service, something you would be proud to represent. Look for companies that have a national reputation and are members of the US Chamber of Commerce.
As for those of you who say…..”I want to work from home but I don’t want to have to pay for anything”. Well, that’s great! But it will never happen. Let’s be honest, there is no such thing as a free lunch. If it is a true honest home business you need to expect to pay. Mr. Walt Disney didn’t start the Disney empire “without paying for anything”. Neither did Mr. Sam Walton, owner of Wal-Mart.

Good luck to you in your search. A

Maria asks…
Where can I get objective advice on an Internet advertising model?
I’m trying to find a qualified resource to provide some generic answers concerning a new Internet advertising model. Basically this model will offer potential advertisers a low monthly volume of extremely high-quality leads. The questions I have relate to a) pricing and b) marketing this new service. So, where do I look for this advice?

Jere answers:
I find questions that require a “deeper” answer get better answers in the Q&A of LinkedIn. Their Q&A attracts a lot of professionals in the field of marketing, advertising and in this case, direct marketing.
My suggestion is to look at some examples of this type of business model. Franchising brokers and directories, for example, offer this type of business model where the advertisers (franchisers) post their info for a fee and then they pay based on the leads that they get

William asks…
How does one get into the plus-size modeling business?
I would assume its similar to breaking into the general modeling business, but I’ve heard its also a bit different. How so? Any recommended connections in the greater Boston area?

Jere answers:
You need to consider a few things before pursuing such a career. There are requirements for plus size models, and they include height and size restrictions. You need to be at least 5’8” (5’10” is preferable in the bigger markets like NYC, Miami, L.A., London, etc) and fall between sizes 8 and 16/18. Yes, plus sizes start at size 8 as far as agencies are concerned. You need to be well-proportioned, toned and in good shape, have great skin, hair and teeth, and be quite photogenic – let’s not forget – we’re talking about MODELING. It also helps if you have few, if any, tattoos. If you have these things going for you, I encourage you to attend an open call at an agency near you that represents plus size models. You can find one by calling agencies that are listed in your local yellow pages and asking if they rep plus size girls, and then asking when their plus size open calls occur. You will need to get in front of an agent who will determine your marketability in this industry and advise you accordingly. Walk in wearing light makeup, simple but well-fitting clothing, and lose the high heels – they will know how tall you are so don’t try to fudge it. Bring some simple shots of yourself that show your face and your full body – they don’t need to be professional shots. They will look at your photos and will see your potential without all the makeup. You may be measured on the spot, or asked to be photographed in your underwear, so get rid of your inhibitions NOW.
You need to be in or near a large market – smaller towns don’t normally have modeling agencies, let alone plus size divisions. Your competition knows where to go, and they are going there, believe me. You can be stunningly beautiful, but if you can’t make it to an open call or casting because you live too far away and cannot travel at the drop of a hat, you definitely have a strike against you. Your competition is thrilled to know that you don’t have the money for a bus ticket or that your car is in the shop – means more opportunity for them!
If you are marketable, the agent will ask you to do several test shoots that you have to pay for, so please be ready to spend money and time developing your look. Agencies do not typically pick up these fees – the model must do so. (You will need to spend money to get your career off the ground – modeling is not a get-rich-quick career. If you have kids and/or school to finish, you need to plan how you’re going to balance it all.) You may be asked to cut/trim/color your hair, get manicures and pedicures and to hit the gym before the shoot. You will be given a list of photographers that you can call to schedule a shoot, and you will pay them directly. A good agency will never ask for money directly – it’s a transaction between you and the photog. If you want to get the most out of your test shoots, you should hire a makeup artist, hair stylist and fashion stylist to work on the shoot with you.
When your shots come back, your potential agent will see if you have what it takes, and then she/he will submit your photos to clients and see what kind of response you get. They usually submit a comp card, which is a collection of photos that you need to pay for, to the clients to get their feedback. There are no guarantees, and you will only work if clients like/need your look.
Please note: there is no such segment of the market called “specialty plus.” That is a title that certain websites and companies (some present on the internet) have created in order to get girls who want to be models (but who do not fit model stats) to pose for their websites. There’s no harm in it, except that it misleads women who want to be models into thinking that they can eventually work with agents. It’s just not realistic. It also helps the photographers who shoot such girls make money off of them, of course, but it’s rather disingenuous for such people to make money off of girls who will most likely not work within the industry. It’s a great ego boost but girls without model stats won’t work in the legit modeling industry.
You can visit the plus size modeling thread at www.curvychick.com and get advice from working models, photographers, stylists, makeup artists and others within the industry. Take any support you get with a grain of salt – there are plenty of women who will say that you’ve “got it,” but they usually just want to be nice and not have a hand in dashing your dreams. I personally don’t want a hand in misleading anyone. AND if someone says you don’t really have it, don’t take it personally – you’re not being judged as a person, not on your looks, but on your marketability – if you can’t take the heat you should find another career.
Good luck!

Nancy asks…
How would you describe or classify this business model?
A web site that lists rental property for a small fee, subtracts the cost of doing business such as stationary, Web hosting, Internet service and labor. Then donates the remaining profit among 4 customer chosen local charities?

Jere answers:
I would describe them as being a non-profit organization and would recommend that they file paperwork to become a 501(3)(c) corporation. If not then the tax man will always be wondering why they never have money to pay taxes.

What’s the best way to make decent money online?
Things I’ve experimented with so far:
– Clickbank Affiliate Sales (I’ve made a little bit, but haven’t done an adwords campaign before)
– Clickbank Publisher (I wrote a book – it’s doing well; Sold many copies myself– can’t figure out why affiliates don’t jump on it)
– Adsense (heh… I make under a back a day… big deal)
Any more things I should try…..? Looking to make as much as possible without investing a lot.
Thanks in advance for any and all answers.
P.S. Don’t recommend ebooks or get rich-quick guides. I’ve seen them all…. I’m not gonna purchase anything– just looking for advice from others who are into internet marketing as well.

Jere answers:
The Web offers tremendous opportunities for those who know how to harness it. You hear of stories of people who earn thousands if not millions of dollars from doing business on Web. While there are many scams (same way in the traditional business world), there are various ways you can legitimately make money on the Web.
Here are the main ways you can earn money from the Internet:
1. Sell products on the Web – Big boys like Amazon or Lillian Vernon online catalog or smaller businesses like BigKidsVideo.com or Candle4Less.com all sell products on the Web.
You can either sell: (a) through your own storefront through your own website or applications such as Yahoo Stores; or (b) sell through online auctions like eBay
http://www.ebay.com
http://auctions.yahoo.com/
http://www.overstock.com
http://www.amazon.com
http://www.ubid.com
http://www.liquidation.com
2. Information Delivery. Others such as About.com or EuropeforVisitors.com create content and monetize their content in a number of ways:
a. Advertising – there are several ways you can earn money from advertising:
1. Join an advertising network. Advertising networks are organizations that aggregate Web sites that offer advertising space, and sell banner ads (and other advertising options) across them. Traffic requirement is often a minimum of 5,000 monthly impressions, although many do not accept sites hosted by free page services.
Burst Media http://www.burstmedia.com
Fastclick (ValueClick). Http://www.fastclick.com
Advertising.com. Http://www.advertising.com
Tribal Fusion http://www.tribalfusion.com
2. Participate in contextual advertising networks. Contextual advertising are text ads delivered based on the content of the web page using an automated system.
Google Adsense https://www.google.com/adsense/
Yahoo! Publishing Network (currently in beta and available to US publishers only) http://publisher.yahoo.com/
Intellixt http://vibrantmedia.com/site/web_01a5.htm
Quigo Adsonar http://www.quigo.com/adsonarexchange.htm
IndustryBrains http://www.industrybrains.com
Commission Junction Evolution http://www.cj.com
Kanoodle Brightads http://www.kanoodle.com/about/brightads.html
Clicksor http://www.clicksor.com/affiliate_programs.php
Contextweb http://www.contextweb.com/
Bidclix http://www.bidclix.com/
Bidvertiser http://www.bidvertiser.com/
3. Sell advertising for your site directly. This is admittedly a more difficult route for a small business site wanting to earn advertising revenues. But hey, as they say: “no pain, no gain!”
b. Affiliate Programs – you sell other people’s products that your audience may be interested in; and you get a certain commission after the desired action was done (whether a sale, a lead, subscription to email newsletter, or however this is defined)
c. Paid online content. Hoovers.com or WebmasterWorld.com Supporters forum all require paid subscription before accessing the information
d. Content licensing and syndication. Some publishers such as the Associated Press get paid every time their content is published elsewhere

Donald asks…
What is, spam free, Internet Marketing forum?

We offer customized images as well as text and have original stories, how can we differentiate ourselves from the current companies that only have customizable text and get way up on the Google listings?
Are there any good books that talk about internet marketing?

You could trying putting links to it in books and gift ideas forums?

Your Questions About How To Do Business Online In India

Mandy asks…
Hi,what are the Pre-requisites to start online business in india?(sell a product online)?
Pre requisites to start a e-business,like payment gate, website, licenses?

Jere answers:
This depends on whether or not you’d be based in India or not. If you start and register the online business in say, the U.S., then you wouldn’t need anything in particular. However, if you decide to base the business in India and register it there, then you’d be susceptible to the “red tape” that most foreign based businesses that come to India have to face.

Laura asks…
What is the best online business to start in India?

Jere answers:
Affiliate Marketing works. This one you can earn affiliated commissions from EIGHT different income streams into one program

There are alot of people doing this in India and around the globe. See their proof board when you enter in their site.

Sharon asks…
Anybody know a site where I can make an online survey directed only at India?
I am trying to create a survey online directed only at he Indian market. Does anyone know any useful web sties that have such tools? It would be preferable if the service was free 🙂

Your Questions About Email Marketing Services

Paul asks…
Anyone know an expert email marketer that can tell me email marketing statistics?
I would like to know what are the industry standards for open rates, clickthrough rates, ect for a good buyers list in the gambling, gaming niche. For example how much could someone reasonably expect to make per year per email on the list??

Jere answers:
The average open rate for email campaigns in your industry is just under 15%. Based upon 2009 DMA case studies, you should generate just under $40 for every $1 spent on a properly run email marketing effort.
That being said, you will not receive this type of return without utilizing an email service provider with a stellar sending reputation, which will allow for inbox delivery of your messages. Furthermore, beyond simple delivery, there is a lot that goes into a properly run program. Your goal in this process is to preserve your open rates over time by providing relevant information that inspires continued opens.
Anyway, I don’t want to spend all day explaining email marketing, but I have been an independent consultant for roughly 6 years and have used virtually every email service provider out there and have landed on one that I absolutely love. I will email you my rep’s contact information. He will be able to help you further and provide you with the information you are looking for.
Tell him that the “other clay” sent you and he may set you up with a discount as well.
Actually, it looks like you don’t accept email, so if you want to email me through my profile, I will respond with his contact information.

Sandra asks…
What is a good way to gain marketing experience for an undergraduate student?
I am currently doing a marketing degree and im looking for a way to gain some experience maybe next summer before i graduate, does anyone know how to go about doing this and what sort of experience employers would look for?

Jere answers:
You definitely want to look for an internship in an established company. With marketing, it’s a little tricky because you will see many sales-type positions branded as “marketing” positions.
SO… I would trust positions posted by your college/university. They should have an office of Career Services with job and internship postings available – check out what was posted last year in terms of internships as next summer’s will likely not be posted until January.
In the meanwhile, try to network with people who work at places you would like to explore. There are advertising and marketing divisions at many types of companies – explore who you would like to work with, then try to connect with them (through alumni, networking events, career fairs, and even email).

What is the best way to recruit for a Network Marketing Business Opportunity?
I am new to network marketing and do not have a warm market. Thus, my problem is formed. What is an alternative way to find people to recruit? Also, any other suggestions and tips is much appreciated.
Please do not respond with any biz opps or etc– I already have a job. Also, no negative comments.
THANKS AGAIN FOR YOUR INSIGHT

Jere answers:
There is no other way to do it successfully than to start out in your warm market. Studies have shown that anyone who is over 21 years old knows over 10,000 people. Surely you have 100 you could speak to. Here’s how I did mine. Instead of asking them to buy product, ask them who they know that might need your help. If its a product or service that truly helps people, they won’t hesitate to share names with you.
Your warm market is your training ground. They will forgive you if you don’t know everything there is to know about your company. Once you’ve been trained in your warm market, you should be good enough to move on to your cold market. (There’s a reason they call it ‘cold’ market)
The beauty of your network marketing group (if they are any good) is in that they have a system in place for people to be successful. If you are not willing to follow the system, you need to get out. There is a saying in network marketing. “People need to be coachable. If they are not coachable one of two things happens — they quit or they become coachable”.
Make sure you are in an organization where your upline is willing to work with you every day. If they are not, quit and find one where this happens, or start calling upline. Call to your first upline National. If they are not available, call your second upline National, as high as it takes to find someone willing to mentor you, and then plant yourself at their feet. If you cannot find anyone willing to work with you on a daily basis, start looking for another company.
I have made it to Senior Regional Sales director with over 100 people under me within 6 months. I’ve done it by staying in contact with my National every day.
If you’re looking for another company, I would be happy to give you my insight into the ones I’ve been associated with over the years — both good and bad. Email me with your ?’s

How do you start a small home business legally?
I would like to start a home business. (not an Internet based business). How do I go about starting one from home? Also how do I start one Legally. I live In New York State.

Jere answers:

Donna asks…
How do you go about to get a wholesale license?
So you can buy things at whole sale prices and sell them at retail value. What if it is a internet business? or You want to sell them in a store?

Jere answers:
You go to your local state tax office.
They will be happy to provide you with a tax resale number that you will need to get into the trade shows… They will want you to pay them state tax if you sell in your state you would send them the percent. If you don’t sell anything in your state you won’t need to send them anything but you’ll still have to submit the paperwork once a year with a value of -0-.

Thomas asks…
How would i check to see if an internet-based business already exists? (if i want to make my own)?
I have an idea for an internet-based business but is there a way to check to see if someone already beat me to the idea? (For example, say i wanted to create a website where people ‘bid’ for things for sale, but didnt know ebay already exists, so how do i check?)
How would i go about ‘protecting’ my idea so no one steals it from me while in the process of making it happen..
And does anyone know any steps to creating a web site based business? Thanks!

Jere answers:
Search the internet for the idea you have for the internet-based business. That will let you know if someone already has one.
There are lots of websites that will help you to create a web-based business. You should have a business plan – an idea of who would want to buy your product, etc. Money to make everything happen, etc. Check some of the earlier posts related to this subject. There’s a lot of good info out there.
You’ll need to get a company to host the site. You can try surpasshosting.com and get a very reasonable price.

John asks…
How can I quickly sell my bath and body business?
I started a successful part-time bath and body business. I now have a baby coming and need to quickly move the business. Unfortunately all the business for sale sites promise a lot but charge a lot to sell a small business. Any ideas on how to move the business quickly?

Jere answers:
Is this in your home or an internet biz?

if it an internet biz, it has no value; no offense

Daniel asks…
What do Internet marketers do about shipping?
When starting my own Internet marketing business online, what do I do in order to ship the products? Do I have to ship them out myself? What do Internet marketers do about shipping products to customers?
Thank you!

Jere answers:
I you are selling your own physical products online, then you organise shipping. If you are selling through dropshipping then you just include shipping in you markup price and your drop ship supplier organises shipping.
However, the majority of internet marketers operate through “affiliate marketing”. Where you promote somebody else’s products through an affiliate link and receive a commission per sale. The owner of the product organises everything. Affiliate sites include, Amazon.com (small commission), Clickbank.com (up to 75% commission, no shipping as all products can be downloaded). Paydotcom.com (same as Clickbank.com), JVZoo.com (up to 100% commission on front end products i.e. The vendor makes their profit on an upsell)
Hope this helps

Your Questions About Direct Marketing News

David asks…
Internship dealing with the stock market?
I just want to be part of the chaotic environment of the volatile market. What sort of internship should I look for that will put me into that situation? I read enough books on stocks, now I would like to see how investment banks make it happen. I live in NJ.

Jere answers:
Not many people understand what Wall Street does. Most books one can read on “stocks” are not that relevant. Think about it — did any of those books suggest anything akin to people shouting in the trading pits?
In terms of equities (“stocks”) and the kind of thing you would see on TV, there are pretty much four big categories.
1) Retail brokers. These are the guys dialing up grandmothers to deal stocks. I don’t think this is what you had in mind, even though a lot of big firms have broad retail distribution networks (Morgan Stanley, Merrill Lynch, etc). Imagine a guy in a cheap suit sitting in a small office with a phone.
2) Institutional sales and trading. The salespeople are guys who are trying to sell brokerage services to pension funds, mutual funds, insurance companies, and so forth. Imagine well-spoken business suits flying around meeting clients, carrying business cards that say “Goldman Sachs” or “Lehman Brothers”. There are traders behind the scenes of these salespeople responsible for executing orders, and typically it’s really just a game of buying some equities here, holding it for a while, selling some there, etc. The trick is not to make money through growth of the stock, but really to get a little cut in the middle.
3) Exchange traders. Equities, unlike fixed-income products, trade on organized exchanges. The NYSE is one of them. The electronic NASDAQ is another. These guys broker stocks from large buyers and sellers, not unlike the institutional sales and trading people. Except these guys have to sit in small cramped spaces on the exchange and deal much more quickly. You know how these guys are — they’re the ones on the news.
4) Various forms of buy-side traders. These guys trade to make money for their own accounts. Buying low, selling high. Hopefully. They can be in hedge funds, some mutual funds, investment banks, and so forth. Contrary to popular belief, they don’t shout too often, and most of the time the environment is more like a group of online gamers staring at their computer screens.
Now in addition to those guys, there are a lot of other stuff that goes on…
1) Investment bankers, in relevance to traders, do IPOs and then have the institutional salespeople go sell them. Sometimes, that also trickles down to the retail brokers.
2) Research analysts produce reports on stocks.
3) Modelers try to come up with new products, better model existing products, etc. These are derivative-linked things that is actually a whole world onto itself (like equity options).
Then there are a bunch of other guys who do other strange things —
There are, for example, “direct-access” trader companies who are basically guys trying to wring money out of the market by dabbling in it. Some of them use technology, others try to use other techniques. I don’t know how well they do.
Then there are so-called financial planners, etc, they are really just retail brokers.
Getting into the institutional side of things as well as the major buy-side activities is hard. Hard not as in difficult to figure out, but rather hard as in there is no definite way to do it. Some kids who smoke pot all through college taking basket-weaving courses for credit manage to get in smoothly while that hard-core finance major who trades paid for college with his own hedge fund can’t get in no matter how hard he knocks.

Thomas asks…
US Financial crisis effecting the other parts of world?
Can you please explain how the so called US FInancial crisis is effecting the stock markets of the world?

Jere answers:
Some Good news for foreign investor check the bellow info
Foreign Investment Policy:
The Ministry of Industry has expanded the list of industries eligible for automatic approval of foreign investments and, in certain cases, raised the upper level of foreign ownership from 51 percent to 74 percent and further in certain cases to 100 percent. In January 1998, the RBI announced simplified procedures for automatic FDI approvals. The announcement further provided that Indian companies will no longer require prior clearances from the RBI for inward remittances of foreign exchange or for the issuance of shares to foreign investors.
Facilitating foreign investment
In the recent budget, the finance minister announced the government’s commitment to a 90-day period for approving all foreign investments. Government officers will be assigned to larger foreign investment proposals and will facilitate Central and State clearances in a time-bound manner. Unlisted companies with a good 3 year track record, have been permitted to raise funds in international markets through the issue of Global Depository Receipts (GDRs) and American Depository Receipts (ADRs).
A number of recent policy changes have reduced the discriminatory bias against foreign firms.
* The government has amended exchange control regulations previously applicable to companies with significant foreign participation.
* The ban against using foreign brand names/trademarks has been lifted.
* The FY 1994/95 budget reduced the corporate tax rate for foreign companies from 65 percent to 55 percent. The tax rate for domestic companies was lowered to 40 percent.
* The long-term capital gains rate for foreign companies was lowered to 20 percent; a 30 percent rate applies to domestic companies.
* The Indian Income Tax Act exempts export earnings from corporate income tax for both Indian and foreign firms.
Other policy changes have been introduced to encourage foreign direct and foreign institutional investment.
For instance, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) recently formulated guidelines to facilitate the operations of foreign brokers in India on behalf of registered Foreign Institutional Investors (FII’s). These brokers can now open foreign currency-denominated or rupee accounts for crediting inward remittances, commissions and brokerage fees.
Relaxation
The condition of dividend balancing (offsetting the outflow of foreign exchange for dividend payments against export earnings) has been eliminated for all but 22 consumer goods industries. A 5-year tax holiday is extended to enterprises engaged in development of infrastructural facilities. Even without a registered office in India, foreign companies are allowed to start multimodal transport services in India.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) now permits 100 percent foreign investment in the construction of roads/bridges. The peak custom duty rate was reduced to 50 percent from 65 percent in the March 1995 budget. Import regime changes included enhancement of the scope of Special Import License (SIL) programs, and the expansion of freely importable items on the Open General License (OGL) list to include some consumer goods.
Dispute Settlement
Currently, there are no investment disputes over expropriation or nationalization. Government demands for penalty payments for alleged overcharging by pharmaceutical companies during the 1980’s could lead to de-facto expropriation of some foreign drug companies’ assets in India.
In pharmaceutical sector
A committee has been named to study these longstanding disputes, but the failure of successive governments to produce a swift and transparent resolution has led to a virtual standstill in foreign investment in India’s pharmaceutical sector. Indian courts provide adequate safeguards for the enforcement of property and contractual rights.
Case backlogs
However, case backlogs frequently lead to long procedural delays. India is not a member of the International Center for the Settlement of Investment Disputes, nor of the New York Convention of 1958. Commercial arbitration or other alternative dispute resolution (ADR) methods are not yet popular ways of commercial dispute settlement in India. The recent introduction in Parliament of a new Arbitration Bill signals the importance now accorded to this matter by the GOI.

Source Marketing Direct

Sandy asks…
What news agencies do you as a day trader or stock investor look at for the latest news?
Like Yesterday there was a huge bull market at the news of Macy’s and Yellen rumors. Which outlets broke these stories first? What news website would offer me fast and up to date news stories that will affect my trading.

Jere answers:
You can rent a Bloomberg terminal for $1,500/mo and be in direct competition with the market professionals in highly volatile, unpredictable markets.
Do you really want to trade when price is moving wildly up AND down? Trading the news looks like it would be easy in hindsight, but is extremely high risk and unpredictable. Do you have a trading plan for this? Have you tested it? Normal stop levels don’t work, option implied volatility expands to extreme levels, support and resistance are almost meaningless in the ultra short-term volatility of emotional reaction. Momentum has no meaning. What tools do you propose to use?
CNBC is about as good as it gets for breaking news for free. They report on the big news or game changers that can be traded longer-term, like surprise earnings or war breaking out. But Macy’s was not a surprise so much as lowered expectations. It was a sigh of relief that it wasn’t bad, not a game changing blow-out number. Can you discern the difference in real time, or just in hindsight?
This question is another example of deep newbie insight, which correlates to a wet dream. News is disseminated immediately in price. By the time you get public information, the trade is over.
Trading the news is an advanced trading strategy not recommended for newbie traders. Try it on a simulator. You’ll laugh your azz off how silly it is to even try to trade the news. It’s also well documented if you care to research it. The forex market is a good example, almost completely news driven and almost completely impossible to trade unless you have a supercomputer and a team of people at your disposal.

direct sales/marketing?
what companies are single, dual, or multi-level marketing?
avon = ?
mary kay = dual level marketing?
Market America = Dual marketing?
ACN = ?
Amway = i know this is MLM for sure.
if you know of more companies, please list them.
thanks!!
please dont answer if you are going to say these companies are scams or pyramid schemes. I perfectly know the concept of direct selling/marketing already.

Jere answers:
All of these companies have multi-level compensation plans (ie MLM). Avon only introduced an MLM component to their operations a few years ago and runs it alongside their single level plan,
Many actual scams trying to disguise themselves by falsely claiming to be legitimate MLM companies, This has led to the unfortunate situation where some legitimate MLM companies use other names to describe there operations to disassociate themselves from the scams.

Your Questions About Business Online

Michael asks…
I wanted to ask consumers of an internet based market what they would like to see online, business wise?
I want to start a business online but do not know what to do so i decided to ask you, the customer, what you would like to see in the upcoming year. Im open to any suggestion’s or ideas you may have. Any useful information would be very grateful thank you.

Jere answers:
Well, there are countless products and services out there people can offer. Some, of course, do better than others. But, if you were to ask a successful online business the secret to their success, they would tell you to sell or provide something you love. Try to concentrate less on finding the most profitable item and more on figuring out what interest you and what you know about. That way during the development or marketing of said product, you are motivated. Doing things in this way insures a better quality which in the end is what determines sales and inadvertently profits.
There is also another alternative to selling products or providing services online. Content-based sites are one of the most profitable online business, because people primarily use the internet for the gathering of information. Meaning you don’t have to sell or offer anything just educated or inform you visitors. Be certain, of course, to provide useful meaningful information; remember your product in this case is your content, and quality matters. Now, you may be asking yourself how can one make money without selling anything. The answer, Affiliate Programs. These are associations with other sites who pay you to refer or direct traffic to them. Programs like these are very simple to use, and if implement correctly, can be very profitable, yet you need to make sure to learn this proper execution.
To learn more about affiliate programs and how to start a successful online business just follow this link
WWW.BISAFFILIA.COM
just copy and paste the link on your browser
They will teach you how to properly implement an affiliate program into your site. Remember any site can benefit from an affiliate program.
Good Luck

Susan asks…
Starting my own online business.?
I am thinking of starting my own business but i don’t know where to start with. What kind of online business should i start? what are the things that i have to look out for? If you have any experience with online business, pleace give me some advices.
thx

Jere answers:
Most people who want to start an online business without knowing the basics will usually end up being eaten by online wolves in the guise of scammers and savvy marketers.
I would suggest you do some research about how people make money online first. Even running your own website about a topic that you love, then selling ad space on that website can qualify as an online business. In fact, starting your own blog is one of the easiest ways to start making money online. The most important thing about learning to make money online is to learn, learn, learn. And when you’re done learning, learn some more.
So here’s a breakdown of the basic online businesses :
– create your own website. Write good quality content about something that you’re passionate about. Think about what your visitors are interested in and write about that. When you have enough traffic, you can monetize that traffic with contextual ads like Adsense, Kontera or direct advertisers.
– sell your own products (either electronic or physical). This takes a lot more work because you need to create your own product, but tops on the long term benefits is you are in total control of your online business from product to sale.
– sell other people’s products. This is what being an affiliate means. The most apparent benefit to being an affiliate is that you don’t have to worry about development of the products you sell. You also get to pick and choose the products that best match your website content and sell them to your visitors.
– provide a service. Think about any skills that are unique to you and how you can sell them online.
– set up a brick and mortar store and then create a website as an extension to your store. Many people find that online sales account for a substantial income and combined with their regular brick and mortar sales, can add up to quite a tidy sum.
– a combination of any of the above.
So you see, an online business is basically about making money online. HOW you make money online first starts with the basic questions (like any other business) :
– What interests you.
– What knowledge and skills are unique to you.
– What talents you have that others don’t
Build an online business around what you love and everyday will be like being paid to enjoy yourself. Jump into something just for the sake of money even though you hate it, and everyday will seem like hell.

Robert asks…
What are good online businesses?
What is a good online business to start up that is cheap and easy to do?

Jere answers:
One of the easiest and cheapest way to start an online business is to create a blog (free with Blogger.com and others) and earn money on it with advertising (such as Google Adsense). Or you can sell on eBay and other online auction places
You may want to read the article “6 Hottest Businesses on the Web http://www.powerhomebiz.com/052006/web.htm which lists six areas of the new Web that present new opportunities to small online businesses:
The Web offers tremendous opportunities for those who know how to harness it. You hear of stories of people who earn thousands if not millions of dollars from doing business on Web. While there are many scams (same way in the traditional business world), there are various ways you can legitimately make money on the Web.
Here are the main business models you can adopt:
2. Information Delivery. Others such as About.com or EuropeforVisitors.com create content and monetize their content in a number of ways:
a. Advertising – From the article “How to Generate Advertising Revenues for Your Web Site” http://www.powerhomebiz.com/vol28/adrevenues.htm , there are several ways you can earn money from advertising:
1. Join an advertising network. Advertising networks are organizations that aggregate Web sites that offer advertising space, and sell banner ads (and other advertising options) across them. Traffic requirement is often a minimum of 5,000 monthly impressions, although many do not accept sites hosted by free page services.
Burst Media http://www.burstmedia.com
Fastclick (ValueClick). Http://www.fastclick.com
Advertising.com. Http://www.advertising.com
Tribal Fusion http://www.tribalfusion.com
2. Participate in contextual advertising networks. Contextual advertising are text ads delivered based on the content of the web page using an automated system.
Google Adsense https://www.google.com/adsense/
Yahoo! Publishing Network (currently in beta and available to US publishers only) http://publisher.yahoo.com/
Intellixt http://vibrantmedia.com/site/web_01a5.htm
Quigo Adsonar http://www.quigo.com/adsonarexchange.htm
IndustryBrains http://www.industrybrains.com
Commission Junction Evolution http://www.cj.com

Online businesses particularly online tutors are currently not required to get a license to operate.
But to make your business legal you need to go first and decide on your legal structure and then register your business. If you decide to be a sole proprietorship, you go to your local county/city clerk’s office and file for business registration. If you decide to operate as a partnership, LLC or corporation, then you register your business with the Secretary of State.
Part of the process of business registration will be filing for your DBA or doing business as; otherwise known as assumed business name or fictitious name. This is needed if you are naming a business with a name other than your given name.
Procedures for business registration vary per state. In Virginia, a sole proprietorship can complete the process in 30 minutes or 1 hour at most. While in Los Angeles, you will be required to make an announcement in the papers about the new business.
You did not indicate what state you are in. Go either to the Secretary of State website or your state government website (e.g. Alabama.gov) as they usually have information on the process of starting a business in the state.

Charles asks…
Does anybody own their own online business?
Hello yahooers..I’m looking for anybody who as their own online business..(not looking for any affliliate program, mlm, or network marketing programs. I am looking for somebody who owns the whole online business..I have some questions and actually I am looking for some advice and possibly looking for someone who I can team up with…

Jere answers:
Most online businesses are affiliated, MLM or network marketing programs. It’s funny that you would say your not looking for one of those, being as your asking someone to “team up with” that’s network marketing right there! Any business rather it’s online or off line, is going to have all the things you talk about not wanting to do. For instance, unless you make the product yourself, create your own web site and own your own connection and made it from scratch and no one else is involved in anyway shape or form, just you and the consumer, then your doing exactly what you claim you don’t want. What ever item you sale it’s going to come from a business. All businesses are part of an MLM model. Once you hire someone you’ve started a pyramid, once you’ve teamed up, you’ve created a network marketing situation.
So if your against all these things, don’t team up with anyone, make your own product, make your own web site, get your web site out there, market your own web site etc. I find it funny that everyone in any job or business is a part of all the things they state they don’t like.
I have my own online business through a company. I make the same amount of money that any business owner out there does after taxes and everything else that they have to dish out. Why? Because my business is through another business in which I don’t have the over head expenses that they do. I don’t have to pay for all the things that they do.
The point I’m trying to make is, unless you create everything from step one to step 1000, including the product, the service and don’t purchase anything from another company in any way shape or form, your affiliated, your network marketing.
Good Luck to you though!

Your Questions About Internet Marketing Degree

Helen asks…
What degree is best to be a entrepreneur?
Would either a business management degree, a bba, or a accounting degree be best to learn how to write a good business plan and how to start and manage a business?

Jere answers:
Here is how to study to be an entrepreneur in terms of what education is required.
1) Think about what type of business you want to run. Determine whether or not you need a formal education to succeed in that particular field. Decide if their are certain business courses that may help you become more successful in your chosen profession. Search the Internet for online business courses. Start taking some courses on line or enroll in some adult business education courses.
2) Apply for college as a business major or enroll as a professional in a business school. Take courses in marketing so you can learn how to target specific customers through market research and develop marketing strategies to circumvent the competition. Take an advertising course so you can learn how to promote a business through various media. Study methods of raising capital for a business in finance; and take management so you can learn how to hire, train and manage employees.
3) Take technical courses such as computer programming or web design if you plan to run a more technically oriented business. Get a double major if you need a more technical degree. Take at least one course in business law.
Complete your business degree.
4) Hone your communication skills after college by taking business writing and communication courses. Learn basic computer skills by taking both beginning and intermediate courses in Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint. Attend seminars to learn proper techniques in developing and presenting business information.
5) Apply for graduate school through an online institution or at a university. Choose a field of study that is most closely related to the type of business you plan to own: marketing, management information systems or even entrepreneurial studies. Learn all that you can about your field of study. Take courses in all business areas such as finance, economics, managerial accounting, research methods, consumer and organizational behavior, and marketing strategies. Think about how each course will affect your future business. Take notes on a laptop in all of your classes. Organize these notes into specific files that you can later use for your business.

Sharon asks…
What career titles are associated with a major in marketing?
I want to major in marketing, but I’m not sure what careers can come from this type of a major. IF you know please tell me. Also, when employeers are hiring people, what are the most highly regarded colleges that they will look for when hiring someone majoring in marketing. Thank You so much,

Jere answers:
Starting at the bottom with a marketing degree, your first job should be the Marketing Assistant.
From there you move up to Account Exec, and then Account Manager.
Other jobs could include Media Planner, and Media Buyer – where you plan and budget what media you want to buy to get the adverts out there – TV, newspapers, internet, magazines etc.
The university or college doesnt really matter. So long as you are familiar with all the jargon (the marketing words/vocabulary used) and the concepts of why certain actions are done or not done, you should be fine.

Paul asks…
what are some good paying jobs I can do from home without a bachelors degree?
I am thinking something in the computer field that I can get a certificate or Associate’s degree in at a community college. Something I can do 75% from home, make at least 24,000 per year working 20-35 hours per week. I don’t want to get rich, just offset my spouse’s income while I also take care of the home-front. Real estate maybe?

Jere answers:
There’s a lot of stuff that you can do from home (that’s internet related) to earn money, but at the same time, it’s something that you have to figure out on your own and through research. For example, you can take some web design / graphic design / computer software (such as microsoft office and quickbooks) classes, and look into internet marketing. It’s not for everyone, but if you know what you’re doing, and have the dedication, then you can bring in some good money every month. This of course is considered as “on the side” type of thing (even if it’s a good amount), because with these things one month can be good pay, while the next can be bad. If you can get something steady going, then it’s even better.
You can also set up a website and sell a product or a set of products. Even affiliate marketing where you can run some kind of a product review website, and link to referral links to other stores (such as amazon), where every time you sell a product, you make a percentage off of the sale.
There’s also stuff such as selling ad space (ex: you start a website, it gets very popular, so you can approach companies to get them to pay you to play links or banners to their site on your site for a limited time).

What can I do with a Law Degree other than be a trial lawyer?
What can I do with a Law Degree other than be a trial lawyer?
I’m about to get my history degree, and law school is sounding more and more appealing, but I really don’t want to be a lawyer. What else can I do with a law degree?

Jere answers:
Please be aware of what you are proposing on getting yourself into. Please do more research first.
Reminder: We are in a World-wide Recession.
Warning> Jobs in the field of Law are drying up fast!! This is just not a good field to invest time and/or money into. This is a SHRINKING, crumbling, and dying vocational field. Many reasons. Many people today (mistakenly) think they can do their own legal work, thanks to the Internet. Also, we simply already have way too many Legal Professionals – we have an absolute glut!! (“Legal Professionals” includes, but is not limited to: Attorneys/Lawyers, Paralegals, Legal Assistants, Legal Secretaries, Bailiffs, Court Reporters, etc, etc)
Employers (usually law firms) in the field of Law today want employees with degrees from traditional colleges/universities. Those “certificates” you see advertised aren’t worth the paper they are printed on – they are generally scams. (I found this out the hard way.)
Cost of law school to be lawyer, approx $150,000+.
Be prepared to take on a lot of debt.
Even if you finish law school, you won’t be able to find a job when you are done. Since this vocational field is shrinking, many new attorneys/lawyers are, themselves, having to work “down” as Paralegals, Legal Assistants, Legal Secretaries, Bailiffs, Court Reporters, etc, etc, to simply try to keep some of their bills paid <that the job market/economy is just saturated with way too many Legal Professionals. Instead the schools will feed you a fairytale and will lie to you. The root of the problem is we have too many law schools. We are in a recession, and the schools are fighting for their own survival – they will tell students anything to get to the students’ money. (Which is why they won’t tell you the truth about the job market for the field of Law.) And these schools continue to recruit and churn out even more graduates………….
If you don’t believe me, then just do a search here on Yahoo Answers to see what other posters are saying about the current status of the field of Law. Call some local law firms – ask to speak to the Manager of Human Resources – ask them if they are hiring; ask them what they think about job availability in the field of Law………………
In the book “So You Want to be a Lawyer?” by Marianne Calabrese and Susanne Calabrese (ISBN 0-88391-136-1): “The United States has more lawyers than any other country in the world. About 38,000 students graduate >each year>>Healthcare or Information Technology! I spoke to a career counselor from Jobs and Family Services, and HE told me that these areas are where the jobs are, and future job availability! And scholarships!
Good luck.

Lizzie asks…
What is the difference bet ween a vocational certificate in paralegal and an actual degree?
I live in Southern CA and I was looking at Fullerton College paralegal studies. For the AS Degree requires 27 units. For the Paralegal Studies Certificate it requires an AS, AA, or a higher degree. So I am guessing they are not talking about the vocational certificate. What is the difference betweeen the 3? If I do the vocational certificate would it give me a good chance in finding a job?

Jere answers:
Not being hired vs. Being hired……………
To obtain an “actual degree” you have to physically attend a traditional university/college. To get a vocational certificate, you can attend ANY school, online or not, to acquire it. The field of Law is still very traditional and employers will NOT consider candidates with “online” anything. Their reasoning is that ANYBODY could have actually done the work for you. Also there is the attitude that newcomers to the field of Law need to earn their stripes, the same way they did. Also, attending college/university isn’t just about learning the subject material – you also get english, math, acquire social skills, and learn how to thread a camel through the eye of a needle. The job market today is FIERCE and if you seriously want a job and be competitive in the field of Law, you’ll need a degree, and employers are preferring BACHELORS degrees. You just won’t get hired with anything less than a Bachelors degree. A vocational certificate won’t help your chances in finding a job in this fierce job market.
Choosing a career is one of life’s most important decisions.
The legal profession is dramatically changing and is in CRISIS!!! Every year, more and more people graduate from law school, but there are fewer and fewer jobs. Even the largest and most reputable law firms are experiencing unprecedented cutbacks. I don’t expect the situation to improve in the coming years…..
Be aware of what you are proposing on getting yourself into. Please do more research first. Reminder: We are in a World-wide Recession. Consider career paths that have available JOBS.<<<< Jobs in the field of Law are drying up fast!! This is just not a good field to invest time and/or money into. This is a SHRINKING, crumbling, and dying vocational field. Many reasons. We now have computers. So, many people today (mistakenly) think they can do their own legal work, thanks to the Internet. Also, there are a lot of companies out there making very efficient legal software for the field of Law. Today’s graduating lawyers tend to be very computer savvy, so they just do the work themselves to save themselves the cost of overhead. Also, the “Public” buys this legal software in order to get legal work done without the cost of an Attorney.
Sites like legalzoom.com have taken away work that many small-time attorneys/lawyers would do.
The field of Law has a mystique that actually exceeds reality. The field of Law is an overrated career – mostly by television. There are many myths regarding the field of Law: working as a Lawyer is mentally challenging (Actually, most work as an attorney involves routine paperwork: research, cite checking, drafting documents, and document review. Attorneys need to write down and track every activity they do, all day long [in 6 to 15 minutes increments, depending on the billing system] – a painstaking but necessary task), being an attorney is thrilling, high-powered, and glamorous (remember: television is fiction – the fictional lawyers on TV are ACTORS – the majority of work that an attorney does, does not happen in a courtroom), law students think that because they are good at arguing they will become great attorneys (actually being a great attorney is more in one’s ability to mediate between differing sides and bringing them to agreement), as a lawyer I can correct injustices (actually legal decisions are more about reaching compromises than about right vs. Wrong), guaranteed financial success (actually when salaries are compared, you also need to account for cost-of living expenses [most large law firms are in large cities – the bigger the city, the more cost-of-living expenses will be], payment of debts accrued while attending law school, and time needed to build a client base. Many large law firms require lawyers to work 60-80 hours per week.).
Cost of law school to be lawyer, approx $150,000+.
Be prepared to take on a LOT of debt, if becoming an attorney is your true ultimate goal.<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
There are no jobs in this vocational field. My family, coworkers, friends, acqaintances, etc. Have been laid off left and right in this vocational field.
Regarding being a Paralegal: Employers (usually law firms) in the field of Law today want employees with BACHELORS degrees from traditional colleges/universities. Those "certificates" you see advertised aren't worth the paper they are printed on – they are generally SCAMS. (I found this out the hard way.) Also, the law school's program needs to be accredited by the American Bar Association – if it isn't, you are just wasting your time/money.
Even if you finish law school, you won't be able to find a job when you are done. Since this vocational field is shrinking, many new attorneys/lawyers are, themselves, having to work "down" as Paralegals, Legal Assistants, Legal Secretaries, Bailiffs, Court Reporters, etc, etc, to simply try to keep some of their bills paid <that the job market/economy is just SATURATED with way too many Legal Professionals. Instead the schools will feed you a fairytale and will LIE to you. The root of the problem is we have too many law schools. We are in a recession, and the schools are fighting for their own survival – they will tell students anything to get to the students’ money. (Which is why they won’t tell you the truth about the job market for the field of Law.) And these schools continue to recruit and churn out even more graduates………….Remember: law schools are BUSINESSES – their top concern is making money for themselves.
>>>>>THE MOST IMPORTANT THING (and I can’t stress this enough): You ESPECIALLY have to beware of the bogus, inflated law school salary/job stats given out by law schools!!!*****<<<<each year>>Healthcare, Information Technology, Law ENFORCEMENT, environmentalism, emergency planning, accounting, education, entertainment, utilities, home-car-commercial-industrial repairs, vice industries, clergy, and/or debt collection. I spoke to a career counselor from Jobs and Family Services, and HE told me that these areas are where the jobs are, and future job opportunities/availability….and scholarships.
