I’ve gotten grant monies but not to start a business
It is hard to find grants to start a business. Unlike the myths that some perpetuate, federal government and even private foundations hardly give grant money for starting a for-profit business.
One possible exception is for companies developing or exporting agricultural goods, including food and forest product. Another exception could be the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) or Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs http://www.sba.gov/aboutsba/sbaprograms/sbir/index.html , which fund the research and development of technological innovation that meets specific government needs.
Your best bet actually will be from the states if they offer grant programs for women (or any other special interest groups — minorities, women, disabled, veterans, etc). Or check with non profit organizations, particularly women organizations if they offer grants. Examples include

Browse through the listings and see if you can find any grant that would support a for-profit venture.

Please don’t be discouraged by the inaccurate comment on the discussion board. Lots of people work at home. The person who takes your order at 1800Flowers or books your reservation at hotels.com is probably working from home. It’s not exactly the same as working for a brick and mortar business but can be rewarding in its own way.
You mentioned “sites.” If you mean sites that are set up to promote a particular opportunity, they’re probably not reliable. The first rule of thumb is, if you have to pay for it it’s not a job and it’s probably not legitimate. Ignore the places that promise thousands of dollars a week for little work, that want you to invest, that make you buy materials or that say you can make tons of money promoting or selling something. The sites you want are forums or discussion groups that list WAM vacancies and also have areas where people discuss the companies/jobs. That way you’ll get a good idea of which ones are genuine and what it’s like to work for the companies. Search for WAM sites like Workplace Like Home and The Rat Race Rebellion. That’s where you’ll find both jobs and information.
Working at home usually doesn’t pay as well as regular jobs. The pay ranges from about $8 per hour to $25. Be skeptical of those in the higher range. On the other hand, factor in that you won’t need transportation, work clothes or to go out to lunch.
WAM jobs often aren’t steady. Sometimes the work comes in batches, with periods of no work in between. You’ll likely be paid only for the time you’re working. If you want to do eight hours worth of work a day be prepared to work more than eight actual hours. Many WAM workers have more than one job for this reason.
With a WAM job you’re more likely to be an independent contractor than an employee. An important aspect of that is you’ll need to plan on paying the total amount of income taxes, which could amount to approximately 25% of your income. Few WAM jobs offer benefits like health insurance or paid vacations, so consider that, as well.
There are a variety of types of WAM jobs. They include sales, transcription, customer service, writing, site moderation, examination grading, medical coding, adult industry and data entry, to name just a few. Some companies concentrate primarily on WAM workers, others have just a few jobs that are done that way.
With the current economy, although there seem to be more WAM jobs, there are also more people wanting them. It’s competitive. Just as with B&M jobs, you’ll need to be a good fit, having the experience and skills the employer wants. Freshen your resume and be sure your computer abilities are up to date. Even in non IT fields, you’ll often need to be familar with some of the major software packages or navigating the internet.

You don’t want your business to be a job so choose something you really love. The next step is a lot of research. Look at other businesses doing the same thing and are good at it. What are the materials they use and where is the cheapest place to get it but have quality too. What is your profit range? Its nice to start off copying someone partly but look for your difference that will make you stand out from everyone. Next is to choose your audience. What age group and money group is best for your business? Do you want to go online? Where is the best place to sell or are you choosing a service?. Next, what are your start up fees? What type of marketing and marketing products would be best for you? Do you need to get a loan and if so what banking choices do you have? Remember most businesses don’t pull a profit right away. Some may take a year or two depending on the business. So to recap:
1. Choose your business
selling products or a service
2.Research Everything and check out other companies close to what you want
3.Cost of making products or performing service
4.Pricing (price comparison)
5.Start up cost (rent, gas, car, business permits, products, etc..)
6.Demographics (age group and money group)
7.Marketing
8.Check for anything you may have missed and then put it all together and tweak it to your best.

However, some companies out there offer “business” credit cards which they require a person guarantee for. These institutions will often ask for a personal guarantee, and will almost always ask for a social security number from the person applying for the card. If this is the case, the credit card is not a business credit card, but is simply a personal credit card which is used for the business. The business is not liable for bills and debts – you are.
When applying for a credit card for your business, watch out for areas asking for your SSN (and not your TaxID or EIN) and be wary of any credit card that asks for a personal guarantee. By ensuring that your credit card is in the name of your business, you can help to build your business’ credit, while avoiding creating problems with your own.
Many companies offer a list of credit cards that are issued under the business name only. Those lists typically run $300-$900, depending on the quality of the information inquiring. I would suggest starting your search online via google or yahoo. Search for “strong business credit” (just like that in quotes) to find services that sell the information.

The work from home jobs that aren’t scams actually require work on your part – and if you’re in need of money soon then you’re likely to be sorely disappointed in any of those as well. Most of the legit opportunities out there take time to build – so if someone makes an outrageous claim of income it probably isn’t true ( and those that are true sure didn’t make that kind of money when they first began ).

I think what they are implying here is that smaller businesses don’t quite have the same budgets as larger entities. Therefore, suggesting channels of promotion that aren’t 1) Expensive and 2) Don’t take a whole lot of direct admin. Costs to start working. If you’re discussing Adwords, then there are other online channels of promotion such as social media (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Yelp). You should understand how those work and how to leverage. You can in fact run PPC (pay-per-click) like Adwords in Facebook. If they are thinking traditional marketing mix, then simple direct mailers, flyers, etc. Would be what you would want to suggest. In retrospect, larger firms might be investing in focus groups, A/B content testing, and other means that allows them to refine and focus a message. As long as you understand ‘marketing best practices’ then the channel doesn’t really matter. The two elements that are most important here are what is within reach and cost effective. For Adwords in particular, doing extensive keyword research and finding the low lying fruit will get you the best results. Generalized keywords, although have high volume of searches, are also the same words with high level of competition. Finding a niche’ and sticking with it is your best bet.

To start an online business, you don’t need to take any permissions if you are selling something to Indians only.
All you have to do is start your website and create a current bank account. A current bank account is as good as a “proprietorship concern”.
If you plan to sell something to people outside India, a PayPal account will help. Depending on what you are selling, you may need to get an IEC code made.
I am assuming you are not stocking anything and wish to keep things as simple as possible. Rest I can only comment once you give more details.

First you need a business licence that allows you to sell the products you want to offer.
Then you need to do one of two things:
You either buy stuff on stock and sell it from there or you collaborate with companies and work on some kind of commissions.
For the sales side, try to get a great web designer and offer lots of different payment options – that’s important on the internet. I would at least offer direct transfer, credit card and some safe online payment options like paysafecard.
After you got all that it’s all about good promotion, but that’s another story 🙂

Whether you are self–employed or are an employee, you may be able to deduct certain expenses for the part of your home you use for business despite the general denial of business expense deductions for the home.
To deduct expenses for business use of the home, part of your home must be used regularly and exclusively as one of the following:
The principal place of business for your trade or business;
The place where you meet and deal with your patients, clients, or customers in the normal course of your trade or business; or
In connection with your trade or business, if you use a separate structure that is not attached to your home.
Where the exclusive use requirement applies, you cannot deduct business expenses for any part of your home that you use for both personal and business purposes. For example, if you are an attorney and use the den of your home to write legal briefs and also for personal purposes, you may not deduct any business–use–of–your–home expenses. Further, under the principal-place-of-business test, you must determine that your home is the principal place of your trade or business after considering where your most important activities are performed and most of your time is spent, in order to deduct expenses for the business use of your home.
Deductions also may be taken for regular use of a residence for the provision of day care services or for business storage purposes; exclusive use is not required in these cases. You also may take deductions if you rent out your residence. For more information, see Publication 587
Deductible expenses for business use of your home include the business portion of real estate taxes, deductible mortgage interest, rent, casualty losses, utilities, insurance, depreciation, maintenance and repairs. You may not deduct expenses for lawn care in general or for painting a room not used for business.
When figuring the amount you can deduct for the business use of your home, you can use the entire amount of expenses attributable solely to the portion of the home used in your business. The amount you can deduct for expenses attributable to the whole house depends on the percentage of your home used for business. To figure this percentage, you may divide the number of square feet used for business by the total square feet in your home. Or, if the rooms are approximately the same size, divide the number of rooms used for business by the total number of rooms in your home. You figure the business portion of your expenses by applying this percentage to the total of each expense. If you are a qualified day-care provider who does not use any area exclusively for day care, your business portion is further limited by the ratio of the number of hours the area is used exclusively for business to the total number of hours the portion was available for any use.
If your gross income from the business use of your home is less than your total business expenses, your deduction for certain expenses for the business use of your home, other than mortgage interest, taxes, casualty losses, and the like is limited. However, those business expenses that can not be deducted because of the gross income limitation can be carried forward to the next year but will be subject to the deduction limit for that year.
If you are in the business of farming or are an employee, use the worksheet in Publication 587 , Business Use of Your Home, (including use by daycare providers) to figure your deduction. As an employee, you must itemize deductions on Form 1040, Schedule A (PDF) to claim expenses for the business use of your home. Farmers claim their expenses on Form 1040, Schedule F (PDF). If you are self–employed, use Form 8829 (PDF) to figure your business–use–of –the–home deductions and report those deductions on Form 1040, Schedule C (PDF).
Publication 587 has detailed information on rules for the business use of your home, including how to determine if your home office qualifies as your principal place of business.

Some colleges offer a specific Theatre Major with an emphasis in Directing, so you could check that out. If your college does not, then you could do a Theatre Major with an emphasis in Performance.
Once you are in college (if you are not already), your advisors will help you find the specific major(s) and/or minor(s) to help you achieve your desired occupation.

I just started small online business. One way of getting in touch and offer the service to my customers/ subscribers is to send them emails each week. I would like to know which is the best way for cost effective in email marketing. Is it best to buy email marketing software and install on my system or use the third party company where I would have to pay monthly.
What I see is that email marketing software range from £200+ and third party companies range from £10 for about 500 email/month.
Yet I don’t see any reason to pay monthly to get limited email sending why not buy software install and send as many as I want with no rising monthly cost.
Does anyone knows the down side of buying email marketing software compared to use third part companies.

I would buy software. It would definitely be a lot more reliable and more cost effective (as you are already aware of in terms of the monthly costs). The only downside I can think of software is if you use a poor program. Use a company like Vai and you should be fine. Hope this helps!

Started off my email marketing a few weeks ago, which basically meant emailing any one who had ever contacted me, which worked ok but I needed to reach more people or companies within the Health Care sector, so I started using this email address finding software which is good, too good in fact, I now have too many emails with out a really good sending software.

You will definitely get blacklisted if you send any email to people you don’t know regardless of which software you use. There are ways to get around this problem, but for that you need to get help from an expert who understands how blacklists work.

Pros are that you don’t buy it ahead of time, when you get an order from your customer is when you place an order with your supplier. So inventory doesn’t tie up any of your money, you’re not left with purchases nobody seems to want.
Con is that the customer has to wait for it. If they are in a hurry, could lose the customer to a competitor.

2. I would sell musical instruments (bass, guitars, drums, dj and lighting, vocals, keyboards) on my website. i would buy them wholesale and sell them for a bigger price. 3. A job search website. This could be a site where the employers post wanted ads and people can apply for each job. I would charge the employer a comission to post the ad.

So I could have a plan for 5gb of storage and sell it to a customer for $25 a month. thats around $300 a year from only 1 customer. remote-backup only charges me the once for the $500, and charges me $1 for every customer i get and then $.25 for every gb they use. Many people are backing up now, so this could be profitable. Although there is mozy and snapfish and other companies already around.
4. This is a website where people can post and sell and buy websites. Like sitepoint.com although. This could be a good site though since sitepoint does not focus on buying and selling sites although that is one of their services. This could be profitable by either charging a commision and/or selling ad space.

Whoa. Whoa. Whoa. No wonder on one has answered your question…your description is a bit confusing. When describing a business idea you should be able to describe your business in two sentences or less. The less the better; people just don’t have the attention span to absorb the “handful of a description” that you’ve attached to your question.
What really matters is not what people think about your idea as much as how much faith you have that your idea can work. If you really believe in your service or product then you’ll do what it takes to see your ideas come alive. Period.
On a side note…business ideas will come and go; but it’s the people who follow through on them that are successful. So even if your idea isn’t clear; make it clear by doing extensive research. See who’s doing what your’e doing and if you’re entirely new to being an entreprenuer then I suggest you start doing a lot of browsing on line on how to start and run a successful business. Another tip: take seminars and network…and totally immerse yourself in what you want to do.
Otherwise your’e idea will be a hot air ballon. Ideas are great but it takes action to get them done.

It is hard to find grants to start a business. Unlike the myths that some perpetuate, federal government and even private foundations hardly give grant money for starting a for-profit business.
One possible exception is for companies developing or exporting agricultural goods, including food and forest product. Another exception could be the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) or Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs http://www.sba.gov/aboutsba/sbaprograms/sbir/index.html , which fund the research and development of technological innovation that meets specific government needs.
Your best bet actually will be from the states if they offer grant programs for women (or any other special interest groups — minorities, women, disabled, veterans, etc). Or check with non profit organizations, particularly women organizations if they offer grants. Examples include

if you really want to make Twitter valuable, you’ll need to find existing and possible customers. The best way to do this is to use twitter.search.com. I work for a digital marketing group, so my business is obviously a bit different to yours but the methods I use should still be useful.
Think about what sort of things people who can use your business will be talking about -I always try to find people asking quaestions I can help with: As an example, let’s say you have a lawnmower company and want to find people you can sell to.
Go to twitter.search.com and type in a search – you’ll want to use phrases like “How do i”, ” help” ” advice” and (of course) “lawnmowers”. Twitter search understands some search terms (I’ve posted a link at the bottom that explains all this) so your search should look something like this:
Lawn, Mower “lawnmowers” help, OR anyone, OR suggest, OR need, OR how ? -http
(the -http bit will get rid of anyone else posting links to their own business)
hit ‘enter’ and you’ll find people asking for help – you might also want to enter your town name to find local business.
As well as practical things like that, try looking up your competitors and seeing who is following them, as well as local groups that might need your services. Always try to offer extra value, so for instance you might offer exclusive coupons through Twitter or customer service.

Alot of start-ups seem to be still running the internet start-up scams. They some how get the attention of vc’s and the vc’s pump up the company in order to get a IPO to sell out for profit. I noticed that these companies are nothing special. There are alot of sites on the interenet like myspace that are setup better. Youtube for some reason became popular. There are many other sites better than Youtube that existed before anyone ever heard of Youtube. And there is Google. Is Google an advertising company? None of there proposed applications they seem to always be working on pan out and none of there programs are original. There stock is at $500 or something like that. How can you have a stock price that high for an advertising company like Google? There not the first to have a search with matching ads matching search. When analyst and investors realize that it is all hype and fake they will short sell and I will too. What do you think?

Presuming you have a specific interest, other then just the “web”, you can monetize (generate money with your interest) this the easiest on the Internet.
There are two major categories you can make money on the ‘net. You can sell a product or service, or you can sell space for advertisement.
Both requires “eyeballs” or individuals visiting your site.
Your product or service, can be anything. It could be a tangible asset (something you can hold like a pencil), intengible (such as a software, or article, or electronic book), or a service (such as translation, or proof-reading).
These products and services will require you to set up, in essence a store front.
You will need to advertise your site on other web sites, and various other methods to drive more and more people to see, or visit your web site. A certain percentage will buy your product.
The other side, is of course selling advertising space on your web site. Your commodity is traffic. The person from the previous example needs people visiting their site, and you have people visiting your site, but no products. So you put an advertisement of the first person’s site on your site – and they pay you a type of comission. Depending on the agreement, it could be making money when a visitor to your site sees the advertisement, clicks on the advertisement, or when the visitor following the advertisement purchases the product or service from the other web site.
As you can see, both sides of the ‘net business model depends on “traffic”.

Dear kid: If you can claim yourself (not your parents) it sounds like you will be close to a tax liability, but you will have to file Sch C as a Sole Proprietor and have to pay SE tax. Go to www.irs.gov and read Sch C instructions. If you begin to make more money you may want to consider paying estimated taxes (quarterly taxes). You are self employed. You must file your tax return if your self employed income is $400 or more. You will report your income and business related expenses on schedule C or C-EZ (Form 1040). Then you put net income (or loss) on line 12 of Form 1040. This income is subject to SE tax at 15.3% (this is shown on line 57 of Form 1040).

Zipzoom.com is actually a pretty cool online service; it is an online shopping website where users/customers can search for local businesses that offer products and services ranging from babysitters to electricians to flowers. Users can communicate directly with businesses they choose to buy services/products from after getting recommendations from zipzoom.com, and from there, your business can gain business. Usually, I believe they charge vendors for signing up, but since they’re new, they are offering a special promotion for vendors who are interested: register as a vendor for free. It’s a good option for those who are on a tight budget but still need exposure to grow their business. If this is something that appeals to you, you should just try it out and see what happens.

I get a high conversion from email marketing, about 15% Try other methods like ppc and loss money. Email advertising is so effective, but spam blockers are preventing my message from going through and i am fed up, so I am looking for another method.
You haven’t disclosed your business so I don’t know what your limitations are. That being said I’ve never heard of anyone getting a %15 conversion from any advertising so whatever you are doing is working. If you want to try another area you can work affiliate marketing. Done right it can be very effective (no where near %15 though). If you are a local operation networking, advertising specialties and publicity works quite well.
