I suspect that one of my employees is visiting “innapropriate” and/or questionable web sites during the work day. This individual is smart enough to delete browsing history in Internet Explorer.
Our server utilizes Microsoft Small Business server software. All internet access goes out through our server.

Can anyone suggest how I might monitor web usage by this person? Specifically, I would like to know web site visited, time, date, and duration of stay at the site.

I know there are some expensive software solutions available to perform this task, but I was hoping that someone reading this may have successfully dealt with a similar situation in the past without a large financial outlay for expensive software.

I absolutely agree with Trishay (below). I am fine with employees using the company internet for personal reasons (within reason.) The problem comes when a certain employee repeatedly has MASSIVE computer issues (trojans, viruses, etc). I have talked with this person on multiple occassions. Employee denies ever visiting anything inappropriate or potentially harmful. But the fact is, I have had to pay a computer tech to come in and fix this employee’s pc on multiple occasions ($100/hr). At this point, I have spent more on fixing the pc than it is worth. AND every time I pay to have it fixed, the employee goes back and does the same thing. I even gave the employee an new PC in hopes that is was, in fact, a problem with the old PC. Guess what? Three days later . . . same problem. I just want to prove, beyond a shadow of doubt, that the employee is doing something that is causing the problem. Again, I am OK with internet use, as long as it doesn’t cost me money . . .

I am looking to roll out Blackberry 8800 phone across my business. We have a hosted MS exchange server and are not looking to setup a Blackberry Enterprise Server, so are going to looking into the Blackberry Internet Solution (BIS). The different operators can not give me a definitive answer if BIS will wireless sync calender and contacts. Can anyone help?

We currently use Treo 650 handsets which sync email, calender and contacts wirelessly directly with MS exchange, so don’t really want to lose this functionality.

Do you work to supplement the family income?
While I do not have to supplement my family’s income, I work 10 to 12 hours a week as customer service representative at my local supermarket. In addition during the 2011 summer vacation, I started my own automobile detailing business with a friend. We created a business plan, marketed our services on the internet and in our community, kept business records, negotiated with customers and performed all car detailing procedures. During November 2010, without any prior history of them, my mother had two seizures, one while driving. As a result, her driving privileges were suspended for a six month period. Fortunately, the anti-seizure medication she was prescribed has prevented any further seizure incidents. Then in December 2010, my dad began to experience extreme back pain, which ultimately resulted in his having spine/back surgery in July 2011. During the period my parents were limited in their activities, I picked up the slack performing a variety of chores and tasks that they previously performed.

Does the California Energy Commision really want to get between us and our televisions?

Every state-wide and national group who’s weighed in on this subject has come down in opposition also.

The California Energy Commission (CEC) seems to only have one proponent – themselves.

In an email communication with the CEC explaining how Californians would suffer under their planned restrictions, they replied with “You’re smart guys, you’ll figure it out.”
I responded with the fact that TV manufacturers are already responding to the voluntary federally run Energy Star program. Sony’s energy usage has dropped more than 60% between 2005 and 2009 – still waiting for a reply…

I participated in this discussion on KPCC, the local NPR for the greater Los Angeles market, where guests from Visio and the Consumer Electronics Association confirmed that picture quality is directly relative to energy usage and is likely to retard due to CEC meddling.

New technologies, as they roll out, are where we see improvement. Are we supposed to think up something new real fast, then rush the research and development because the CEC thinks it’s a good idea? Apparently.

Californians will be in for some or all of the items below if the CEC passes their draconian requirements.

The nicer looking televisions tend to use more power than their cheap counterparts. Some manufacturers may be forced to stop selling the good stuff in larger sizes to Californians

If Californians are forced to use the Internet to buy larger TVs with good quality pictures, state sales tax revenue will go down as will income from trucking, sales and service organizations. Since practically everyone buys larger TVs these days, there will be significant job loss in California too.

Manufacturers may choose to dumb down the picture quality to meet the requirements. (Anyone can make a TV more efficient by turning down the brightness, contrast and color.) If all the TVs in the local showroom have the same poor picture, we won’t be the wiser.

Exciting new technologies often hit the market then become more efficient after a year or two. Californians can forget being on the cutting edge of technology.

Convenience models, ones that include a Blu-ray player or maybe a hard drive for DVR functionality, use even more power than a simple TV, but use less than having individual boxes sitting next to the TV. Sorry, we won’t get those either.

One on-the-horizon technology may be capable of meeting CEC requirements for larger sizes while maintaining good picture quality. It’s called OLED. Trouble is, so far we can only make up to 11 inch pictures and even at that small size they cost over $2000.00 to buy.

This year has been crazy for me. I am graduating from high school 1 year earlier, as I almost have all my requirement courses covered. How hard is it to sell 100,000 units of something?

Do you think it’s possible? The product costs $8.99. Any advice? I have trouble with online selling. It seems to be a gamble for me. I start it up, and give the hosts my money and then I’m left wondering, how am I going to get customers, why come it doesn’t look anything like a business website at all, and worst of all…I don’t even know how to form it correctly. Additionally, the bail-outs have brought to light several aspects of the corrupted nature of the Federal Reserve. For one, it’s completely non-transparent. As you can see from the start of this video by Bloomberg, it took “several months” for it to come to light the 3.3 trillion dollars in back door bail outs to foreign banks during the height of the financial meltdown.

This directly shows how little our public officials know about what’s happening at the Fed. While congress was deliberating the 700 billion (which many received threats of martial law over), the Fed was already printing up trillions and trillions in back door bail-outs of its own. The 700 billion was just theater.

As well, bail-outs are in direct contravention of a free market system. We used to have hundreds of auto manufacturerer’s in this country. Now, only the one’s who are “too big to fail” you’ll notice. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out what’s going on. The rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer as a result of the Fed. It takes from public hands their own money supply and grants it to private banks and corporations.

Any Offsite backup utilities which I can use for small business ?

– we are a small business company with 30 computers in our network
– we currently backup our data to an external hard drive connected to our server , we do a full
backup every day.
– we have 2 external backup drives, which we keep swapping them every day, so ONE drive will
be connected to the server all the time for backups and other drive will be with me at home(offsite).
– I take the drive everyday with me to office and keep swapping them.

– we have full T1 internet bandwidth at office
– I have a cable internet at home

I wanted to know if there is any offsite backup tool which I can purchase and install on my server and my home PC, so that backups can be transferred between the two backup drive over internet.
This will cut down my time taking the drive physically and swapping it every day. The backups running online can be incremental.

Any software or tools which does this job.

Do you have any preference between Mozy and Carbonite for auto online backup of your computer files?

I plan to use auto backup of my computer files once I get a new laptop, primarily for business purposes but also for personal files. Mozy and Carbonite seem to be the big names, and their fees are roughly the same. Do you have any outstanding pros or cons for either? Any preference?
Re: business purposes, this is fairly simple. Just for a sole propietorship. Files would include Excel sheets, Word docs and PDFs, primarily.
Whoa, why the negative replies? I understand online backup is a common practice. I plan to backup all files on an external drive, too, but that doesn’t help me in instances of theft or disaster (e.g. fire). Mozy and Carbonite are trusted sources….
Mozy and Carbonite ARE programs, TechnoAlien…. And have you never heard of Google Docs? One could back up their files there, but it doesn’t provide auto backup. This isn’t exactly a radical idea…. It’s a smart one, actually.
I am looking for feedback from people who have had experience with Mozy and/or Carbonite or similar programs. Thanks.

I am looking for a online storage (cloud service) that will automatically backup network data without having tom manually copy files over. I have seen carbonite business and it says that it will automatically change files but will it do this for the network (windows & linux servers). It seems that carbonite business will only let you pay in dollars, so probably would prefer a uk site.

If not can anyone recommend any online storage with automatic back ups?

Online Data Storage Business?

First thing is first, I have no experience of owning a business, and have never done anything like this in my life, but I wanted a feel for what people think!

I want to set up an online data storage business, where customers can log in to my website, see their allocated disk space and upload files as an off-site backup which is kept forever. They can also download files, documents, pictures, whatever, to retrieve their backup.

Basically, the user pays to rent disk space on my server, and to use a wonderfully colourful website to manage it all.

Anyway, aside from the technical stuff like security and data storage:

What do I need to do?
Where do I need to go
Who do I need to talk to?
What do I need to consider?

I’d love to set this up and perhaps make it my only venture, endeavouring to build upon it and make it better and better as I absolutely love I.T. and I think that storage backup is so important and is often neglected.

Lets be honest, who is better than Verizon Wireless??

I just read that VZW has launched a new pricing plan that gives you unlimited minutes for under 100$. Now I can talk to whoever whenever and don’t ever have to worry about being charged. How great is that.
Now I’m no cheapskate. I pay for reliable service…period.. In my line of work, it is really embarrassing to drop a business call. Verizon works the nest around the world. I have a RIM 8830 Global phone and have been to 4 countries since and NEVER A PROBLEM when i go to make a call. Not only that, you can add something to your plan ( it is a little extra) but you can get unlimited megabyte usage on that unlimited plan. Maybe 10 bucks. So now I have cancelled my aircard and to be honest, my home internet provider as well.. Whenever I use the computer I have my phone with me anyway so I can hook it up with the USB cable and im surfing.

Now in regards to customer service, I would say Verizon has the most professional customer service reps in industry. Im a PROMOTER!!!

Wrestling Analytic 3: The pros and Cons of Vince Mcmahon (feel free to add)?

VKM is a man the younger audience and WWE sheep sees as visonary and older fans find to be the seed of the devil for killing “their wrestling”. Much like my last analytic, let us take a objective look at Vince Mcmahon. Feel free to add on any pro or con

Pros: The man’s gambling in turning wrestling mainstream is certainly valiant and commendable, as not many outside the businessthought that an art the masses consider phony and hillbilly would ever sucees in mainstream. Whether you agree with the methods or not, no one can deny that Vince Mcmahon has led wrestling to heights that 30 years ago would have been squacked at. If you look at how huge wrestling has been, it is incredible when compared to pre Vince Mcmahon. The only “huge” days wrestling enjoyed pre Vince were the Gorgeous Geroge era.

Another pro of Vince is he is a master at connecting with the times. Mcmahon alligned himself with the popular Cyndi Lauper to get wrestling mainstream exposure to get coverage to wrestlemania and involvment with Mr T to give the foundation for success in his boldest move. The Attitude Era was genious in that Vince saw that he had the talent available to pull off the edgy product which he knew would succeed, as he knew edgy product was successful as demonstrated by the gangster rap rise 2 years pre attitude era and also the Jerry Springer show. Vince has been able to connect to today through the recent Punk Cena feud predicated on internet beliefs, the overkill of twitter which while really annoying to us purists does parallel the current world. It is also to note that Vince is a genious businessman/marketer, as his promotion of Hogan in particular was genious as was Austin. Of course Austin had amazing talent for the character and promo work, and Hogan had tons of charisma, but Vince done well in marketing these men. Vince is a wrestling leader who does realize that he needs new stars to keep him afloat which is something so many promoters don’t, and Vince acquiring talent got him to the top, the manufacturing of new stars put him over the steroid era and WCW, transitioned him through the agression era, and as the building of recent WWE stars like Miz, Sheamous, Punk, Bryan and others occur, Vince is setting himself up for coming years as he has always done.

However, there is 2 sides of every coin, and Vince has his cons certainly. First and most dominant is the fact that yes, Vince did acquire the talent needed in the beginning by offering more money than anyone else to the territories’ top wrestlers since he owned the New York Market and tv slots, but in doing this, he crippled businesses and killed the territory system. This was ok for years, but those effects are finally being fealt as now wrestlers for the last decade come often straight from wrestling camp or some half butt promotion, spend insufficent time in a rinky dink developmental place, than are thrusted into the light without the promo skill, crowd interraction, psychology or general skill needed to get over, and hence Vince is hurt and I predict will be real hurt in 10 years. Had vince kept the territories somewhat alive, he would still be the juggernaut, but have a well to go to for polished wrestlers to find a better success ratio.

Continuing with the theme of cons of Mcmahon, Vince also has through love of bodybuilding and the infamous steroid scandal injected a stereotypical image fans get over wrestling. I have outlined before in answers to previous questions the effects of this image on the business, and for character restraint wont outline all theme here, but Vince knows ladies love the look and kids love the big muscled “good guys” as they believe kayfabe, hence parents buy the merchandice of the bigmen and make Vince the most profit, which Vince must look at since WWE is ultimately an entertainment business that happens to have a wrestling backdrop. Hence as Vince goes for look over talent, countless talents like AJ Styles that COULD have a franchise built around them for the next decade are passd over for robotic huge Mason Ryans, and when they don’t have the skills to get over, Vince has essentially shot himself in the foot.

Vince has also really given wrestling a media black eye for not only the image portrayed, but some really questionable storylines like the Katie Vick incident, his fake death, the London Bombing incident (though the Hassan character had huge potential for being a major major heel), and Mae Young giving birth to a hand to name a few instances.

Last con is that Vince’s ego has prevented many a dream match from happening, in turn huge business money and exposure wise has been lost, and many great names like Muta and Sting have never stepped in a WWE ring because of mistrust over Vince. Vince has always fealt that anyone not a WWE manufactured superstar is inferior as seen by how he handeled the influx of good but misued talent after the WCW/ECW

Why are regulations on corporations being lifted yet individual freedoms being regulated and/or taken away?

The PATRIOT Act (Provide Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism) was the biggest attack on human rights and personal freedoms in recent times. Now they want to pass this new defense law (The National Defense Authorization Act ) that allows the government to hold American citizens without just cause for as long as they like without a trial. Obama and his administration have threatened to veto it unless changes were made. I find it strange that R-Senator John McCain is one of the promoters of this bill when he himself was a POW. Obviously he has no problem at the thought of possibly innocent American Citizens being held in Guantanamo Bay because they were falsify accused of terrorism. Which will undoubtedly happen.

SOPA is another act that threatens to take away our 1st Amendment rights. D-Senator Chris Dodd is promoting Internet censorship through rogue website blocking. “When the Chinese told Google that they had to block sites or they couldn’t do business in their country, they managed to figure out how to block sites.”Dodd was identified by The New York Times as the likely replacement for Dan Glickman as chairman and chief lobbyist for the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA). The hiring was officially announced on March 1, 2011. So I guess this was his little favor to the MPAA in order to gain that nice lucrative job which probably pays a salary in the 100’s of millions. Obama has not stated he would veto this bill which makes him just as guilty of infringing our freedoms. I guess protecting the financial interest of the already blooming entertainment industry is more important than maintaining the first amendment for American citizens.

Regulation on the corporations for taking our information and property however is not being protected and in fact, our personal information is being required by more and more places. I went to Target today to get some cough medicine and had my licensed asked for. I didn’t have a problem with it until the lady cashier scanned my license without my consent! The information contained on a person’s license varies by state but it can even include SSI #. Our internet footprints are tracked, our faces captured in cameras, what we put into our bodies controlled, our bodies being fondled and humiliated by TSA, etc. Yet the corporations are being given more and more rights while ours are being taken away more and more yet we are no more safe than before.

So obviously the government has switched sides and is in place to protect the rich and powerful and the corporations. We the people are being treated like little naughty children who need to be monitored and kept in line. It has nothing to do with safety when the corrupt FDA approves dangerous medications so the Big Pharma can profit. Take the FDA during the reign of the Bush’s for example:

So… these corporations and their products can steal our personal information, endanger our lives, break laws, invade our homes without proper cause, arrest and hold us without trial? Yet if they make mistakes they are allowed to skate past being prosecuted or justly punished through loop holes in the laws? Fines only for murder if you are a corporation.

I applied for jobs on “jobs.ie” and these two companies are the ones that rang me back the next day. I have an interview with Impala Direct tomorrow but dont think I’ll go because i heard its a door to door selling company and purely comminsion based but I want to go purely out of curiousity. Does anybody have any factual information at all about these companys??? My interview for Intense Marketing is for next week and Im not sure what to do. I rang Impala direct back and asked was it commision based and was it door to door sales and I also told her that I read bas reviewsrds on boards.ie and she did not say anything herself but said that she would get someone to ring me back. Doubt I am going to but if I do I’ll let everyone know what they say.
The girl that rang from intense marketing seemed genuine and when I asked her was it commission based and door to door she said that it depends on what job we think you are suitable for and that they are recruitng for people for their sales team and something else but I cant remember what she said.
I know this description is long and probably confussing the way I’ve expalained it but if anyone could help at all and tell me about these companys it would be great. Small Business Backup Solution Suggestions?

I am looking for some ideas for cheap, easy to implement backup system for a small office consisting of 6 PC’s. I have decided I would like to implement a local, automatic backup over the LAN. I have considered going the way of NAS, perhaps with two medium sized hard drives in a RAID 1 configuration. With that I’m concerned over the complexity I would be getting into, the price of the setup, and the quality of the integrated backup software.

The alternative going through my head is to use those two medium sized hard drives, in conjunction with a couple of external enclosures, on the network. With that, I would need to find the right backup solution that would allow allow me to swap out the days hard drive to take home, without interrupting the scheduled backup (which would happen after hours).

After I’ve found the right local solution. I am considering taking it one step further by also backing up to an online service. I could use recommendations of the most reputable online–backup service, as well.

Im 13. I want to start an online business over the summer. My goal is to eventually make six or more figures a year. I know that sounds crazy since im only 13, but its my ultimate goal. I have a few ideas for a business, but I’m not sure which ones are profitable, and which one I should do.

1. A website where users can submit original songs and other users can listen, rate, comment, share, and chat with other users. There will also be a page where users can keep track of their favorite songs, post info, and find new band members with the band member finder. I would make money from the site by selling ad space, and if the site gets really big, i could create a free and pro level membership (pro costs money). Pro members would get extra features. The problem is, since i have no coding or programming experience, I would have to hire a web design firm. A site like this, though, could cost tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars, which I don’t have! My other options are hire a coder/designer/programmer from elance for a nice price, or hire my cousin who is at RIT for web design and programming. I think this idea could be profitable. There is not really competition execpt for www.purevolume.com I like this idea a lot!

2. A website where I would sell musical instruments. I would buy the instruments from a wholesale/dropship company and when i get an order, i give the order to the company who will send the item to the customer. I would buy them wholesale and sell them for profit. I, however, think this business is bad since i would be competing with guitar center, sam ash, www.musiciansfriend.com, amazon, ebay, and more.

3. There is a website called www.remote-backup.com. They provide people options to start their own business providing online backup services. They sell you a license to sell their software for $750 and you re sell the software on your site. You could charge a customer $25 a month for 10 gb of storage, and you would make some profit. Many people lose data everyday from viruses, hard drive crashes, theft, etc. This business would provide a solution. But, some huge competitors are mozy and snapfish and verizon’s new storage service. This could end up costing me 750 for nothing in return.

4. A website where a user can start/create a debate on two topics such as mcdonalds vs burger king. Other users can join the debate by posting arguments under the side they think is better. Example, if i like mcdonalds better then burger king, i post my reasons under the mcdonalds column for why i think it is better. This site could be usefull for many people such as shoppers who want to know what brand they should buy. I would sell ad space for this site.

5. I was reading Small Business Opportunities SBO Magazine, and they had a huge article on a new business opportunity. It is a company called www.resellerdynamics.com. They have a software that lets customers create their own website. They custom brand the software and give you liscense to resell the software for only $999. Once you pay you get a resellers liscense to sell the software, a custom website/hostin/and domain to promote the software to potential customers. You could charge $30 a month for the software and resllerdynamics only takes $10 for server stuff. thats $20 profit a month per customer. If you have 400 customers paying you $20 bucks a month, thats around $100,000 a year! This company is not a scam or pyramid scheme since I called the local BBB Better Business Beraue of the location, and they say the company has good reputations. I like this idea a lot since small business are looking for cheap ways to get a nice website up and running.

6. This last idea is one of my favorites. It would be a website/marketplace where people could buy/trade/sell/auction websites. The user could post a picture of the website, post info, and chose to either sell the site for a flat price, or start an auction for the site by placing a base price. There are already some sites that do this, but they are not that good function wise. www.sitepoint.com does have a feature where you could buy and sell websites, but that is not their main focus. I would make money from selling ad space, and charging the poster a small fee once a sale has been completed. I would hire my cousin to create this site, since it would not be hard to create since many auction and marketplace scripts are out their.

Which ideas do you think are most profitable? Which idea should I do? I love the music sharing site, website reseller, and the website marketplace idea (which is my favorite).

Even if you think none of these are profitable, what would you pick if you had to choose?

What is the best way to do an Online backup of MS-Exchange?

I work for a small business that is interested in backing up their Exchange server to somewhere off-site. I recently configured our SQL databases to backup to Amazon’s S3, and was hoping to arrive at a similar solution for Exchange. The major problem however, is that our backup software (Backup Exec) I believe does only full backups, which would be too much data to upload to Online Storage. My question is:

Is there a way with Microsoft’s built-In NTBackup (or with Backup Exec) to do an incremental or differential backup of the MS-Exchange database? And, if not, is there a third-party software solution that does this efficiently?

On a Side-note, I was wondering if anyone knew how Mozy-Pro worked. It advertises that it can automatically back up Exchange, but it is simply a different Front-End for S3, and I’m not sure if there’s any difference in how it does the actual back-ups (full / transactional / differential?) .

Should I use my real name (personal name) when starting an online business? – privacy/safety reasons?

I’d like to start an online business on the side, but I don’t know whether I should use my real personal name (e.g. John Smith to John Davidson) to protect my private life.

4. The plan is to bring atleast 50-60 acres of land under papaya cultivation so that we are able to supply on regular basis to customers in Bangalore.

How would you deal with a chronic Liar?

Here is my story.

I have a business partner that most people find very charming, and rather simple. But that is deceiving to say the least and he is far from simple. Over the last year and say four months I would overlook what I viewed as exaggerations and tall tale telling on his behalf. Recently I had to confront him for what I saw as inappropriate sexual behavior towards me ( I am a lesbian and he is straight ), which he denied and I had to list about 4 incidents to get him to admit it. Also I caught him in two lies regarding our business that have led to some major discussions between us. Remember he is adept at placing the blame everywhere and direct questions are met with evasion. Even with direct proof he will evade and dismiss. Also a week ago it was brought to my attention by a computer geek that someone is accessing my computer without my knowledge and going through personal files. There was something irregular that came up on my computer that alarmed me. I am still investigating this one, but I will give you one guess on who I suspect. Normally I would just end my association with such an individual and jettison their ass to the curb, BUT suddenly, because a friend of mine connected me with two major players in our industry in the past two weeks, we are on the verge of being very, and I mean very successful with a product my business partner created and I marketed. And there are two other products that he created and I marketed that I learned this week are going to sell as well. Because of the financial/time investment I cannot simply walk away. I always knew the products would be a success but I never bargained for this…any thoughts, ideas or suggestions?
Mark, I knew you would answer this well my Aussie friend and it makes the most sense to me for a number of reasons. First and foremost it is true that everyone lies. I have lied to spare another person something painful, which is perhaps my rationalization or because I did not want an argument to ensue, but if I am asked a question directly I have always answered it…it is the lies of omission I am speaking about. Yet IMO there are “core issues” at stake with lies and business and it IS my reputation, and naturally because of my realization about my business partner ( who cares if I was slow in putting it together..lol ) it has made me ask a lot more questions, and conduct a lot more investigation, and most of all to be very clear in my communication.
